All things considered the one I would not be without is Lime Toast. Easy to take for a toast, the lime gives way to a lovely toasted tobacco. It’s also not as high in N imo as Natural Toast which is one I could not take all day. My tolerance is not up there so to speak.
I just received it today but I agree with you @Franknsnuff. The lime toast is great. I was so surprised at how much easier it is to take than the scotch I started with. That goes for all the toque I’ve tried today.
Nice one, I’m glad you like them. They’re based in Berwick-Upon-Tweed. I worked up there for a while in the 1990’s, on Lindisfarne Island as a nature reserve warden. I have fond memories of the place. It was during the 98 football world cup. Half the town’s pubs had English Flags flying outside, the rest Scottish. Suffice to say it’s right on the border.
I’ve tried most of Toques offerings and I would have to go with either Camphor and Clove or SP Extra. I love the slightly coarser grind of the C&C, if Extra had that grind it would win hands down. Edit: Spelling
Same as @Koba22 except I wish C&C had the grind and base of SP Extra, in fact I had some made that way and it’s awesome! I call it Camphor & Clove Extra
I like most of them, I re order Spanish Gem and Whisky and Honey and SP Extra
I think that Toque do the best flavoured snuffs (not perfumed or floral mind! ) I’d have to say Spanish Gem or Almond/Lime Toasts are the top of the Toques for me
I’ve only tried some six of them, but so far the Ginger is my favorite. It really feels like having a piece of ginger in my nose.
Dunno, never tried a toque, but clove and camphor, blueberry menthol or whatever is on my list to try. Just the name makes me drool.
I prefer Berwick Brown overall.
Toque USA Lime. I like the base flour and it has just the right amount of moisture for me. The flavor is of lime, lots of lime, and I know this may sound odd, but at times it also seems to have a backup of urinal cake, that for some reason just works for me. And for a Toque, the aroma is very long lasting.
No Toque in my collection yet. There are just some snuffs out there that don’t attrackt me. This brand is one of them.
Quit Spanish Gem SP Extra
Spanish Gem, Whisky & Honey, Xmas Pudding, SP Extra.
Spanish Gem, Whisky & Honey, Xmas Pudding, SP Extra.
Yep, they’re good. Not tried the SP, but its going on the list.
Pomegranate is the best for me , followed shortly after by Apricot and Quit. However I´ve only tried half of their entire range…
Also Peach is just damn delicious =P~
Until Roderick comes 'round with Liver & Onions to match up Cheese & Bacon, I’ll go with Spanish Gem, St. Clements and my #1 is Natural Toast. I’ve yet to have a bad Toque, they are all very good and well crafted from good tobacco. Some suit for different times, but I have them all in 50 ml mini bottles all over the house. Love the One You’re With.
It is hard for me to pick a favorite Toque snuff. ATM the USA W&H, Natural Toast, Spanish Gem, and Camphor& Clove are in the heavy rotation. The new USA line is outstanding! Plus the Rustica has become a staple for mixing. The other limited edition that I loved was the Pumpkin Pie. Really out of all the Toque snuffs there are only two that I won’t buy again, Cheese and Bacon and Absinthe. They are just a bit too much flavor wise and not to my taste. I guess at this very moment I could say that the USA Whiskey and Honey is my favorite but some other may fill that spot tomorrow. For any new snuffers I think Spanish Gem, Quit, Natural Toast, and SP Extra are the must tries though.
You asked so here we go… Spanish Gem USA Whiskey & Honey USA Black Cherry Berwick Brown Quit Pomegranate Peach And I like many more but those are my favorites.
Is there a difference between USA Whiskey and Honey and Whiskey and Honey? There doesn’t seem to be on Mr. Snuff webpage… Just wondering
Is there a difference between USA Whiskey and Honey and Whiskey and Honey? There doesn’t seem to be on Mr. Snuff webpage… Just wondering
Yes. The USA version had Rustica in it and the flavoring is a bit different too. It seems a little sweeter to me.
Thanks @willc. My non-USA Whiskey and Honey is not sweet at all and I am wondering where the honey comes from
@SkeG I get a little sweetness from the original W&H and I think it is great in its own right. The USA one though has a really pronounced honey flavor especially when the tin is first opened. I noticed that if I leave it in my snuff box for a couple days it mellows into something very special and it turns a good bit darker in shade too.
The USA version seems to climb higher in this thread. Have to test it in some uncertain future then.
@SkeG I agree, I will order a few of the USA versions, so what’s the main difference in the USA vs non USA versions anyway ?
My Toque favorites that I’ve had thus far in no particular order: Christmas Pudding Coltsfoot Spanish Gem Camphor & Clove is a close runner up to the above.
So far I’ve never met a toque I didn’t like, I’m taking it as a personal mission to work my way through their line of snuffs.
Spanish Gem(no small feat as I don’t care for scented snuffs much) followed by Natural Toast and Quit.
UK: Whiskey & Honey USA: Kentucky Bourbon UK: Grapefruit UK: Cheese & Bacon UK: Almond Toast
Spanish gem, by a long way. I am very partial to the Christmas pudding, as well; I’ve been meaning to get it in bulk, along with a few others that I haven’t tried.
Quit Spanish Gem SP Extra
I’m going to add Violet. It’s totally not the sort of snuff I usually like, but it’s great. I always feel sad for it when Roderick threatens to eliminate the florals, as he does from time to time.
My favourite Toque is my favourite snuff - Berwick Brown There are a few Toque snuffs I always want to have to hand. Toffee, Pomegranate, Vanilla, and Blueberry are always nice to have for the occasional pinch, but it’s BB that I keep coming back to. I do have a few hundred grams of Plain Coarse tucked away too, which I use as the foundation for mixers to tone down snuffs that are a little too heavily scented
Almond Toast
Lime Toast and Apricot UK.
I think it’s a toss up between Original and Best SP for me
But they’re all good for different occasions
Berwick Brown
I am surprised no one picked Black Truffle . I have yet to try it myself. Anyone want to send me a gram?
Apart from the obvious rustica which is so sublime it shouldn’t be compared to anything else… the utterly awesome camphor and clove, and ginger are my tops. But the 18 others I’ve got are pretty damn good, too.
My one top Toque is Spanish Gem Almond Toast Natural Whiskey&Honey Natural Toast. In season I’d include Xmas Pudding Pumpkin Pie. Berwick Brown Quit gets honorable mention, along with Original Lime Toast. I like others, too, but that’s my one most favorite Toque. There are still some that interest me that are coming my way as soon as possible. I didn’t know there is a Ginger.
I use USA Whiskey & Honey the most, but I also really like USA Lime, Lime Toast, Almond Toast, Natural Toast, Raspberry, and Fig & Juniper. The only one I really don’t like is USA Spearmint… unlike other spearmint snuffs, this one reminds me of Skoal Spearmint.
My current Toque collection consists of:
Almond Toast
Quit
Toffee
Peanut Butter
Chocolate
Vanilla
The peanut butter is probably my favorite of all, but I have to say the vanilla is just sublime. The sweet flavored snuffs are great for me, because I have diabetes and they pretty much quench my desire to indulge in actual desserts!
Vanilla (one of my all time favorite snuffs)
Champagne (for something nice and different)
Berwick Brown (refreshingly leathery)
Spanish Gem (the best flavored snuff known to man)
I’ve only had experience with 10 - 15 Toque snuffs, but I’ve got 30ish coming in the mail, list may be subject to change
A tricky question as all of the Toques I have tried have been excellent.
USA Whiskey & Honey - probably my favourite
UK Whisky and Honey - when I fancy a fairly straightforward toast
SP Extra - my favourite SP
Berwick Brown - a good old fashioned aroma
Spanish Gem - when I want something a bit different
Bubble Gum - when I want something sweet and very different!
Christmas Pudding - seasonal and also very good for dealing with the symptoms of a cold
i know that Toque does not seem to be regarded as an “Artisan” snuff but I think that their snuffs are of equal quality with the best that I have tried.
As per my comments above they are the snuffs that I use regularly whereas the artisan snuffs - with the exception of Field of Junipers which I can take all day - are snuffs that I find too complex / luxurious for all day use. They need to be savoured in a different way from the Toques.
I am not sure if that makes any sense but the main thing is that @Roderick produces wonderful snuffs and long may that continue.
Berwick Brown; despite having a grind thats just a bit coarse for my liking, the scent reminds me alot of Old Paris for some reason. Funny thing, for me, theres an ever so slight bit of soapiness that intends to present yet pulls itself back at the very moment that it starts to become cloying and yields to a nice warm leathery scent that lasts for ages. This is probably the most enduring snuff i own scent wise. I had some trouble recently with Toques making me feel slightly allergic, so i dug out this tin and had a go: no problems with this one at all.
That soapiness seems to disappear after a bit of airing (or half a day in a snuffbox in your pocket). That’s when I really can get stuck into Berwick Brown. In fact it’s the only snuff I’ve found that actually gets better the more air it gets, and as such it’s the only snuff I can brim fill a snuffbox with for the week, and not worry about it losing it’s appeal till the box is empty. If I haven’t got time to be looking after my snuff or refilling often, that’s the one to grab, everytime!
I enjoy almost all Toque varieties but have to say my favorite(s): Toque Natural, Original and Spanish Gem.
From the ones I have tried until now - Ambrosia, Spanish Gem, USA Whiskey and honey, Berwick Brown. Have to try lots of others!
Toque Menthol, hands down.
Toque Rustica
USA - W&H
Spanish Gem
Cherry Menthol
The first two above have a wonderful unique aroma. The CM is just a good fruit menthol snuff.
Being honest, this wohle Brexit stuff scared me a little, so I ordered several (many) tins of the W&H and the Spanish Gem.
For me my all time favourite Toque is Violet. But today i think Otto Chancellor might ever be better!
Quit, SP Extra, Blueberry Menthol
It’s a tough call but I would say Peach USA, Whiskey and Honey USA, Lavender, and Spanish Gem are my favorites.
St Clements.
USA W&H and Natural Toast.
If we clasify Otto as Toque, then Otto Chancellor is far superior. If not, Menthol and Original enter my daily rotation once in a while.
Ambrosia is easily my favourite.
Of the ones I have tried I really like: Menthol, USA Lime, Rose, Lavender, Violet, and Camphor & Clove. Have yet to find a single Toque I don’t like but least favorites are Champaigne and Ginger.
Toque Quit & Toque Natural Toast
Also Rustica and USA Whiskey & Honey Toast
and SP Extra !
I have to go with Ambrosia
I chose Berwick Brown back in 2016 and I feel the need to I’ll stick with that (excellent and unique) choice. But I have to give honorable mentions to:
Toque Quit - The most binge-able snuff I’ve experienced. Unscented, but with a fantastic natural “molasses” scent. Once I crack a tin I’m snuffing nothing else until it’s empty.
Toque SP Extra - Something really special, a real “bergamot bomb”, but it’s the base tobacco that really helps it shine. (So this is perhaps a second honorable mention for Quit.)
Toque Natural Toast - In all respects, a direct competitor to the venerable HDT. Bready, buttery, nutty, with a balanced smoky undertone.
I snuff more Toque than any other brand.
Ambrosia, Original, TNT, USA Whisky and honey
I didn’t see anyone mention Cola, that surprised me. Although I do believe it is edged out by Spanish Gem, Cola was the first tin I ever finished off from my first order.
Toque Quit for sure
@ALLex @SHbickel totally agree, have just emptied a tin of the Quit (although I quit smoking cigarettes some years ago now!) And it just ticks all the right boxes for me. Lovely scent, reminds me of a nice Virginia based pipe tobacco and has enough nicotine to sharpen me up a bit! Close second is the Natural Toast
SP Extra is the only one I’ve tried and it’s a now a staple. I’m curious about: Quit Berwick Brown St. Clements Rustica (for mixing) Thoughts?
SP Extra is my “kick me in the Jimmy pick me up.”. Berwick Brown is a good bergamot laid over what reminds me of the Kendall brown type snuffs.
- Quit is perfection. I’ve been told it’s the base tobacco for SP Extra. Unscented, but VERY flavorful in its own right.
- Berwick Brown is divine. Based on your enjoyment of some of the more perfumed F&T snuffs, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
- St. Clements is like candied orange zest on the original Toque base. A fine choice.
- Rustica is a great choice for mixing. See recent posts from Volunge here for some pairing tips to maximize nicotine if that’s your goal.
And while I heartily recommend ANY Toque snuff, here are a three popular choices that you might be missing:
- Toque USA Whiskey and Honey - Too sweet for my palate, but it seems to be universally loved so I’m happy to admit I’m “wrong”! Super strong nicotine.
- Ambrosia - Another that’s a bit too decadent for me, but universally appreciated around these parts.
- Otto Chancellor - An SP in the style of the German oiled snuffs. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m very excited to add this to my next order with Roderick.
Cheers!
@SHbickel If you like bergamot, you need Otto Chancellor in your life.
@SHbickel Chancellor has menthol? Do any of the others on that list? I’m ok with a tiny bit, but menthol does not agree with my guts much at all. I’m starting to appreciate the fine grinds now that I’m getting better/more consistent at taking them. Don’t seem to make me run as much…
@pantsBoots I’m more excited to try Otto Chancellor than any snuff in recent memory. I’ll throw an economy bag in my next order with Toque, but I need to empty a few bottles before I put in my order because I plan to order a bespoke snuff too which only comes in 400g and I’m out of fridge space! haha
@Wild_Alaska Yes, I expect the level of menthol in the Otto line to be similar to the Poschl-types. I can enjoy a few pinches of Poschl throughout the day without feeling the “menthol rebound” as Uncle Squinty calls it. English menthols though… they tear up my nose and make me super sensitive, it feels like a chemical burn or something, and they stuff me up immediately.
@SHbickel how is Berwick Brown next to SG Kendal Brown original? I don’t wanna stock both…
@Wild_Alaska I’m not a big fan of menthol but I find the amount in Chancellor perfect. It’s not dominant but complementary. Highly recommended Snuff. @SHbickel A 10g tin was just not enough for me.
@Wild_Alaska Of the Kendal Brown homages, I unequivocally recommend Berwick Brown. The scent is perfectly balanced to me. It’s like a symphony with leather scent playing the brass, florals on strings, citrus playing the winds, all being conducted by the coarse ground hay and barnyard base tobacco. (It’s a little bit poopy too, but in a good way if that makes any sense haha.)
Kendal Brown and the like have more historicity, and are delightful… but the back drip is very acrid. They are not identical, so you can certainly pick up more than one down the road.
I have to change now I tried the quit. It is just perfect. Have to order a biiiig bag of this.
@SHbickel I’m only 2 weeks in, so I’m still refining my methods, but I’m finding the finer powders (while harder for me to take) are more enjoyable overall because they don’t bother me if I’m spitting it out cause it went too high… Viking dark has a great flavor, I don’t like spitting it out…
Swallowing a tasty back drip is one of my guilty pleasures. :"> It’s a good reason why I like SPs so much.
@SHbickel the backdrip from Honey Bee is the best part of taking that snuff.
The American sweet snuffs taste like powdered sugar! I can’t imagine that’s what they actually use, but it sure does taste like it.
@SHbickel I figured it would hurt my gut (I got real problems lol), but I guess what makes it down your throat is a tiny amount compared to chew or smoking even. I don’t care what you say though, a gnarly chunk of Viking dark going down the back is not my idea of a great time lol.
I find Honey Bee and Tube Rose have a different kind of sweetness than the other sweet scotches
@SHbickel, U.S. Smokeless use sodium sacharin and sacharin + maltodextrin for their sweet scotches.
@n9inchnails, are HB and TB sweeter / less sweet than the others, or feels like they are made with different sweeteners?
Different sweeteners, most sweet scotches have a fake sugar(aspartame) tasting sweetness but Honey Bee and Tube Rose have a more natural tasting sweetness with Honey Bee tasting closer to honey than sugar.
Toast and Marmalade is one of my favorites from any brand, it is just so darn good.
Quit, Natural and Original. My 3 favs.
