I must admit it, this type was my initial snuff of choice back in the late 60s thru the seventies and still is one of my favorites of all times. I cut my teeth, (now quite dull and many missing…) on "DR RUMNEY"S MENTHLYPTUS’ snuff in the nice lil tin with the goofy looking older man with large sideburns. Ah those were the days. I have tried TOQUES menthol as well as a complimentary Wilsons of Sharrow SM500. I must admit I love the eucalyptus and camphor as well. Menthol is good, but by itself it is like drinking good bourbon without the ice and a slice of lemon. I guess I would have to go with MEDICATED as my choice, but which one? there are probably 8 or so from WIlson’s alone, I am looking for the most scent, and stronger is better in my book. I don’t want something that will fall flat after a few weeks or months. WIlsons has it available in 500 gm containers at a very reasonable price. I tried getting some bulk snuff from McChrystals but it was much more expensive. Which Wilsons fits my criteria? I bow to your expertise one and all…thanks
Dr. Rumney’s Exclusive Menthol. Its a SA snuff and is amazing. Moist, med grind, just the right burn. Its my all day, go to and make it through snuff. Mr. Snuff has it in 5g for 1.99 and it is worth every penny.
anyone try the new brown plastic container dr rumneys EXPORT snuff? supposedly it is what was listed as the snuff Brad Pitt used in the movie, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS… I swear it was a nice wooden french snuff box though. I used to own one like it.
For me, it would be Hedges. First pinch of the day…every day.
When I am not sick it would be WOS Honey Menthol or GH CM, but when I am, it is SM Blue.
I don’t like many menthol snuffs, but I love Wilson’s SM Blue. SM 500 is a close second. The eucalyptus tones down the menthol just enough to make it enjoyable to me. I wish MrSnuff carried Blue in bulk.
Toque Menthol for me.
Pall Mall
S.M. Blue and J&H Wilsons Medicated No.99 in the big tins. Though Dholakia medicated is a close second, especialy since it’s not too strong but not too weak to consider medicated. Toque menthol while fine is just too weak in my opinion. when I want medicated I want nice strong medication.
J&H Wilson’s Medicated No.99, with 5 Photo Himalaya as a close second. Just had a pinch of the Wilson’s a few minutes ago. I can breathe again!!!
A pinch of Gawith Hoggarths Eucalyptus, Followed by a pinch of WoS Camphor and Mild, Both from a fresh tub! Just what the doctor ordered. And of course the old standby, a little Toque Whisky and Honey.
Wilsons of Sharrow Honey Menthol!!!
McChrystal’s O&G.
i can advice everyone to try a pinch of SINGELTON´S SUPER MENTHOL or (a totally diffrent kind of snuff) MC CRYSTAL´S ENGLISH MENTHOL. both are fav´s of mine when it comes to menthol snuff.
Digging around in the freezer I came up with a snuff I have had for some time but not tried, Amostrinha by Bernnards. This has the most camphor of any snuff I have tried laid over a medium ground schmalzler. It is quite nice and very medicated.
Yes, Amostrinha is great and very messy when pinched!
Tucky
I would suggest SM Brown or SM 500 for snuffs along the eucalypti vein.
anyone try the wilsons SM gold or their SUPER menthol? one of those had citrus with it, I am looking for the camphor and eucalyptus variety similar to my belove DR Rumneys Mentholyptus, I will be getting a bulk 500 gm batch when I order it from Wilsons and want to get the right type. For the price of rougholy $30 shipping included for 500gm, I dont think I will find a better deal out there. PS, I found an ancient tin of Rumneys, empty of course after a good deal of rummaging from the 70’s clutter I have about…now it is full of the TOQUE menthol. But it is going quickly up my nose and I will need to find a replacement within a month or so.
I would not get 500g of a snuff I had not tried. WoS will customize a 12 tin sampler pack for you. Get all 9 of their menthols (Menthol, Menthol Plus, Super Menthol, Extra Menthol, SM, SM 500, SM Brown, SM Blue, SM Gold) and three other odd ones to try in small (approx 5g tins). You an decide which is your favorite after that. I never had the vernerable Dr. Rumney’s as it was before my time, but both SM Blue and SM Gold have a camphor component. I also strongly reccomend reading reviews of the various blends at snuffreviews.com before committing to such a large purchase.
PS: you may also write Wilsons and ask them which one they reccomend. I’m sure there are some old timers there who remember Dr. Rumney.
There’s an old-timer here who remembers the old Dr Rumney’s!
I just got a little tin of JIP and it’s very impressive. economical too–I use a very small amount to get my menthol fix. I can’t say it’s helping my breathing much in the long term–all menthols end up stuffing me up (though for some reason O&G is by far the worst for this, for me).
@ ermtony: Ok, old-timer, but do you remember it inimately enough to answer the OP question? Which contemporary snuff comes the closest?
Not easy, as it must be well over 30 years since I last had the original, but having tried WoS Menthol Plus recently I think that one comes close.
Poschl Red Bull is another strong menthol snuff if you haven’t tried it. Hedges L260 is tops in my book though with O&G coming in a close second.
I almost only use menthol snuffs, and my favourites vary. Hedges L260 will probably always be the ultimate uber-menthol! But at the other end of the spectrum, I love Gawith Apricot as a more frequent all-dayer as it’s so mild. I really like all the various Poschls I’ve tried though, they all have something a bit different IMO. BTW, why do some people say ‘medicated’ and some say ‘menthol’ - they basically just mean the same thing, don’t they? Is medicated the more traditional word to use?
O&G hands down
medicated implies more additives then just menthol. In fact it could have no menthol just camphor or something else.
GH C & M … but rarely … only to have when I really want that cleared out sinus feeling.
I rarely use menthols, so I haven’t had much experience. I will say Dholakia Sparrow Cool is awesome. It’s very light on menthol and I can still taste the awesomeness that is Dholakia Sparrow underneath. I do like O&G too. Unfortunately, very early in my snuff-taking days, I tried Poschl Red Bull and it went into my nostrils. I still approach all menthols with a bit of fear.
Jip is my favourite one, but I still have quite a few to try. I also really like Gletscher Prise as it has a really nice aftertaste. And of course Hedges.
Still the one and only McChrystals Original and Genuine
I like Blast Strong Menthol.
Hedges L260 is the ultimate.
Going strictly by the definition of “medicated” as meaning the snuff has menthol as well as other ingredients like camphor and eucalyptus, I would have to say Hedges L260 is my favorite. However, I also think several of the WoS medicated blends are top-drawer, too.
dholakia medicated is pretty awesome by the way.
The SA Dr.Rumney’s is my #1 favorite, followed by J & H Medicated #99. The #99 is to be taken in small doses, as i completely numbed the right side of my face on one occasion.
Mine’s definitely Magnet Menthol. Too bad I can’t seem to find it anymore…
I had the original Rumneys too. I don’t think there is a modern equivalent. It was a strange consistency, fine mill but with occasional bits of rough stuff. Nothing remarkable about it in my memory apart from the unusual flip top tin. As it was completeley non air-tight it was hard to ever get a tin that was not dried up. It also had a picture of Dr Rumney on the front looking as approachable as Jack the Ripper
I always thought medicated was just the same as menthol, but now @bob says that a medicated snuff may have no menthol, and @PipenSnusnStuff says it’s menthol with other ingredients! My poor brain!
Medicated will have either menthol, camphor or eucalyptus in it, one, two or all three - thats the medicated bit. It can also have other flavours added, rarely. The term arises from the early part of the 20th century when snuff flavoured with various combinations of those three additives was sold in chemist shops as a remedy for colds etc - Hedges and Rumney’s being obvious examples and both formulated originally by Doctors.
Pine and sometimes other herbs (wintergreen?) and possibly anise I would say are in the medicated grouping.
xander is right. I’ve also detected corriander in one of the popular medicated snuffs. An occasional snuffer I knew looked at me when I said that like I was crazy. Untill after pointing it out they noticed that yes there is unquestionably corriander in one of the popular medicated (won’t say which one, you can find it yourselves).
Try Dr. Verey’s Full. They seemed to have loaded that one with everything on the shelf. Its not bad, just goodluck figuring out the ingredients.
are there any pine or wintergreen snuffs?
@ snuffster, this is the best one for pine:- De Kralingse A/P. To quote Jaap “Latakia with the scent of pine forests”. It’s superb!
Bernard Fichtennendel is Pine & Spruce like the A/P. It has menthol as well. I’m pretty sure there is some wintergreen in the GH Sea Breezes, many remark on it having similarities to ben-gay or some such medicines. Checkerberry is the fruit of the wintergreen herb. It bears resemblance to wintergreen.
Sounds nice.
You never tried Checkerberryt? Its an experience; that’s all I have to say.
Checkerberry has a pleasant flavor but it plugs me up really bad. It’s very moist and fairly coarse.
Checkerberry seems made for oral use.
I’ve been getting properly acquainted with Wilson’s SM range and my favorite is SM Blue followed by Gold. I like camphor. I also really like Wilson’s Extra Menthol. Another great nose cleaner. I’m very very fond of L260. I frequently ‘wash’ my nose clean with it between snuff changes. Lastly, I couldn’t imagine an O&G-free existence, never grow tired of this.
O&G Original is awesome, so it O&G Highland Ice. I can take it nearly every day. Same goes for WoS Extra Menthol and Pöschel´s Gletscherprise. Love them all. Another fav of mine is MAVERICK GREEN which add´s a solid “african” tobacco base. The ANDECKSER Spezial-Snuff isnt bad either, but got more herbs and stuff to it. I second the Checkerberry, it is awesome Wintergreen for your nose and together with the Swisher Maccoaboy, it stands out from the realm of american scotches.
O&G, Hedges and SM Blue are my favourites. Stefan
Not easy, as it must be well over 30 years since I last had the original, but having tried WoS Menthol Plus recently I think that one comes close.
The good Doctor and I had a very close friendship throughout the seventies and into the eighties. I consider WoS SM Gold and SM Blue to have the balance of menthol/eucalyptus/camphor that Dr. Rumney had in mind. I will add GH Eucalyptus or WoS Camphor & Mild as the mood, or my sinuses, call for.
You can’t go wrong with L260 or O&G, but my favorite is WoS SM Blue.
Such a difficult question. For me it depends on my mood. Considering the occasion being the contingent factor of which ones I would say are my favorites, I would have to say currently FUBAR Medic, J&H Wilson no. 99, and toque menthol would be my choices at the moment.
