What's the difference?

Ok, I admit I am new to snuff. I am having a problem maybe you all can help me out. Wilsons Queens extra and #22 plug me up quickly. Within a couple of minutes I need to blow copious amounts of crud out of my nose. F&T HDT and Wilsons Tom Buck do NOT have this effect. Very similar products, but one drives me nuts and one doesn’t. What’s the difference? Or is it just me technique? I’ve been snuffing about 3 weeks, so I may be doing it wrong. I don’t like most of the menthols I’ve tried. Toque seems to be the best choice for me so far. I like the queens and #22, and would like to use them… HELP. Please…

Chances are there is no single answer to this question as it varies from one person to the next, some people have this problem with menthol snuffs and i personally find that my nose reacts differently from day to day what clogs in the morning may be fine in the afternoon or evening. Technique may also be a factor here i use different techniques depending on the snuff and there are several good threads on this forum regarding technique. As i always say variety is one of things i love most about snuff so if something does not feel good put it in the drawer and find one that does its very likely that you will come back to it another time and you will really enjoy it. Also don’t be disheartened three weeks is early days yet and you will develop your own techniques with time that allow you to get the most enjoyment out of the different snuffs in your collection. Hope this helps

Thanks, Big Al, I guess I’m just too new at this. I’ll keep trying, maybe something will change. Anybody else want to help the noob?

First thing; dont worry - lots of people have a snuff or two that for some reason doesn’t suit. There are several snuffs that I can’t take because of the congestion or sneezing fit that they bring on and I have been happily snuffing for going on 30 years. The best answer is to try as many of the massive range out there to find the ones that are good for you. I love Tranter’s Latakia, Seville,Hedges L260 and others but they are not worth taking for me for the same reasons you give for No 22. This is a common thing. You may want to experiment with technique and how much you pinch but its possible that the snuffs you mention might have to be consigned to the back of your collection. At least, as you say, there are good snuffs that you can take without problems so you know you can be a snuffer!

Thanks! Next stoopid question…is the huge snuff boogers ok to leave in for a while? I mean, I blow most of it out, but at the end of a day there is a pretty good base in there. Just askin’, since all the experts seem to be here. I’m a guns and snus “expert”, snuff is a whole new world. Please don’t hate me. LOL

I guess I worry about the health effects of leaving it in.

If you feel the itch to pick, then pick away! (Discreetly, of course.) I usually give my nose interior a bath at the end of the day. A little nose gargle in a cup of warm water followed by two or three good blows. Then a twisted up tissue (kind of like a reamer) or a q-tip should wipe anything else out. I try to do this before bed. Everything is nice and clean for tomorrow (you’ll have more surface area clean for new snuff to cling to). Sometimes, I can’t wait for tomorrow and just before bed I take a new pinch!

I keep some President for the clearing exercise, cleans me right out after a couple of minutes. I’ll have to try the nose gargle.

Its a personal thing and there are no real accepted rules. Just do what feels right for you. Personally if I need to blow, I get the whole lot out, if you know what I mean. The idea of having some snuff that you use as a kind of nasal enema is quite sound and I occasionaly use a menthol to stimulate a good blow, nothing wrong with that. Mick, snuffing is mostly about finding whats good for you, and generally speaking we’ve all had the same thoughts and experiences when we started so don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need to. I only hate shils and trolls - so unless you are about to start calling us all motherffuckers out of the blue, you won’t have any problems here.

Theres a big difference between 22 and FandT HDT. 22 has an entirely different flavour, grind and colour. Its a different snuff and you only need slight differences to cause a problem.

@ bigmick: If you try the nose gargle try both fresh and salt water. Sometimes I use the salt. Dip your nose into the cup and suck it up, making sure to leave some air. With a little practice you can make it jump around in there just as if you were doing a throat gargle. @NickKick: good call with the Neti Pot. Next time I am in the co-op (health food store) I will check these out. I never thought I’d ever have a use for one until I started snuffing and reading these forums. In the meantime, I will continue my gargle, blowing and wiping method. Also good that you mentioned those various Wilson’s types. I was about to start a new thread on this. I will do so presently.

Again, Thanks Guys. I never picked up on the lavender scent in Queens, but that would explain it. Lavender and I never did get along too well. I love F&T HDT, but don’t get a lot of flavor, where the Wilsons has a lot of flavor and I WANT to like it. I guess I’ll use Toque pom and Raspberry and Tom Buck as standbys and work my way through the rest. Any other toasts that are close to the Wilsons I should avoid?

@ bigmick - I have just ordered a Neti Pot and have decided to give this a go before going to bed for a clear out as i often wake up in the morning a bit clogged up, seems a cheap and cheerful way of keeping the old snout clean and will come in handy if i have a lot of congestion from a particular snuff which happens now and again. Also don’t forget that even if a snuff causes you a problem in its current format it does not mean you can’t use it in a mix and enjoy it that way. Hedges L260 gives me congestion sometimes other times i have no problem with it. I had a little of this left in my snuffbox the other day and being in a rush forgot and filled the box with FUBAR Grunt the resulting mix was very pleasant indeed and caused no congestion whatsoever.
