Well so far I’ve acquired all the toques (except for the fruit-menthol ones , i figure i can just mix my own) , the classic poschl’s (ozana president and cherry, gletsherprise , lowenprise , gawith apricot ) , F&T HDT and Old paris , and a sample pack from Sharrow Mills (Royal George , Jockey Club , Raspberry (tho it might be mislabeled , is it supposed to have menthol ?) , Crumbs of Comfort , Honey Menthol and Best SP) , a few dholakias like swiss chocolate , sparrow cool , aniseed menthol , she) and Hollandse Bolongaro. Now I’m asking you ladies and gents , what should i try next ? I feel i need to widen my selection but don’t really know where to start.
samuel gawith, samuel gawith, samuel gawith! i may be the biggest fan of their art on this site. lol
Missing some traditional Schmalzler in your collection?
Schmalzler, indeed! (Perlesreuter or Pöschl Schmalzler A Brasil). And / or McChrystal´s O&G.
How about an American Scotch?
You´re right, there´s not a single Scotch in Jack´s collection. Suggestions? I´d say Standard.
For a first scotch maybe something not too tough, maybe Navy Plain.I’ve never used Standard, so I don’t know how strong it is, but I would not suggest Rooster or Garrett’s for a first, nor Three Thistles.
Yeah, maybe the Standard is a bit too bold to start with. Navy sounds as a good beginner´s choice. For a Scotch, it´s mild. But then again, it IS a Scotch…
How about Tops Mild
Dental Mild is mild enough for a start.
WoS Raspberry is menthol.
I like the suggestions so far, thanks! I’m adding them to the list as they pop up so keep’em coming :). I’m guessing the danger with the scotches is the sawed off shotgun effect ? Or to be more concise , what makes for a good beginners choice rather than the rest of the scotches ? @saucy_jack: Any favorites within their range you could name ? @Red Star: Could you tell me how McChrystals O&G Compares to Toque Menthol or Poschl’s Gletscherprise , i’m been so far unimpressed with most of the medicated snuffs I’ve tried , except for Wilsons Crumbs Of Comfort (and that’s because i like spearmint ) And the Honey Menthol where the honey makes the menthol bearable.
You have quite a nice base of snuffs to choose from. If you have all of the Toques, you have representation from most of the popular snuff types except some mentioned above, like the Schmalzlers, American scotches, or the Indian snuffs at Dholakia. That being said, take your top Toques and buy similar varieties in other brands - i.e. if you like the Toque toasts (Whisky & Honey, Lime Toast, Toast & Marmalade, Natural Toast, etc.) branch out by buying Wilson’s of Sharrow Irish High Toast #22 or others. Similarily, if you like the florals you can find other examples of those from different manufacturers that you may like. I ALWAYS check the site below before I buy a new snuff (I also search this forum for info). The other memebers here that post on SnuffReviews.com typically include enough info in their reviews to help me make a decision to add it to my shopping cart at NicotineRush or not.SnuffReviews.comUltimately, I wouldn’t worry too much about buying a small tin of a new snuff just to try it out. You will find a few gems and a few that you don’t like very much. Just set the “not so good” ones aside and come back to them some other time. You will be surprised how your tastes or the snuff can change for the better with time. And if you find one that you absolutely cannot stand, trade with another member on this site - problem solved. Good luck in your snuff journey!
@ Jack: A good beginner scotch, I would recommend Navy Plain, Dental Mild,or Railroad Mills Plain. I have not had Tops Mild, but anything “mild” or “plain” is a good start. Avoid any that say “strong” for the time being. You may want to try a sweet scotch, as they are generally more mild, but some people don’t care for the flavor. I’m not speaking for saucy jack, but I also agree you need some Samuel Gawith. My favorites from them are Yellow Crest and Blue Crest, and Princes Gold aka Princes Light but I have not yet sampled the whole range. I also agree you need to try a schmalzler or two. This all should help round you out. Expanding into F&T and deKralingse is always fun too. From DK I recommend Prins Regent and Macuba. From F&T I love the florals, so Macouba or Morlaix always thrill me. Have fun!
@Jack: LincolnSnuff already mentioned the snuffreviews site, and as far as the O&G is concerned it´s one of the most reviewed snuffs (therefore I´d written one in German there, there are 40+ reviews ins english, so even if I´d tried hard, couldn´t have possibly added anything unmentioned before). I really think the O&G is an essential snuff, whether one likes mentholated snuffs or not (and generally, I don´t), it´s cherished by nearly everyone who ever tried it. The Toque Menthol is actually a very good snuff, but can´t really compared to the O&G, which consists of a whole arsenal of flavours, where the Toque Menthol´s made of the high class Toque base tobacco and Menthol and nothing else. The Gletscherprise has quite a “special” flavour nowhere else to be found, which I´m quite glad of, as I don´t like it really. There must be something to it, as lots of people love it and it seems to be the single most loved snuff around. I know quite some people who don´t use anything besides the Gletscherprise, sad as it sounds. Whatever the “Columbia Oil” in there may be, it doesn´t seem to be used in any other snuff. So, can´t be compared to the O&G. There are tons of reviews on Nicotine Rush, no matter which tin size you choose. They pretty much sum it up, just like snuffreviews.com.
Indeed , I’ve been going through the reviews since the first suggestions started , i just wanted to see your input on that particular snuff ( the reason you recommended it) , and through this last post you’ve clarified that :). I don’t mean to seem like a lazy bum and I’d like to state i appreciate all the input on this thread. So far I’ve found that i liked most of the “highly recommended” snuffs since i first joined.Back then most recommended Whiskey and Honey , and sure enough it turned out to become one of my favorites as well.
Oh, no, sorry, it didn´t seem like a lazy approach at all. I guess my reply proposed something like this. Wasn´t the intention, really. After all, if we can help each other a bit, that´s a great thing!
If you like Whiskey and Honey, you should try Samuel Gawith Irish D Light.
SG’s Prince’s Dark, Cob Dark, London Brown, Golden Glow, Black Rappee, After Glow, Dr. Verey’s Plus, Princes Gold, etc etc
Don’t forget to try the South African style Gwayi. Taxi, NSTU or if your digging peppermint get the Taxi Rock.
