I just purchased this today, and wondering what’s inside. Like, how is the snuff packaged inside? http://alturl.com/7f4sv
I can’t vouch for what u got, but the Superior at the local grocer comes in tubes like Bruton, Society, Dental…etc. Considering 1.15 oz. is around $3 I’d say it’s a pretty good deal ya got. Edit: my compulsion made me go to the grocer to pic up a tube. damn u man…lol! 4.65 oz. fror $10…same company as Bruton and Square and I’d say a cross between the two. Good American Scotch IMO. Darker than Bruton, Lighter than Square…Moister and more course than Bruton, drier and finer than Square. best of both worlds i guess u could say…still has that smokey bbq flavor of your typical American Scotch, yet kinda mild. Nice all day snuff. As far as packaging goes, i must admit i’m clueless as to what you’ll get. Here’s a pic of mine…
Bruton is made by US smokeless, unlike Superior and Square ;p Superior is a great snuff, made by Swisher. Kinda seems…metallic to me…for lack of better descriptors, but otherwise smokey, plain tobacco. Of course, lord only knows how old that package you bought is. Keep us posted on it; I’m interested.
i stand corrected…don’t know if it’s the beer givin me a nic buzz or the snuff makin me tipsy, but i don’t know how i missed that one ; ). i think it was the snuff buying frenzy i went on today after realizing that a grocery store less than a 1/4 mile from me that has a better snuff selection than the local tobacco shoppy that fried my already feeble mind! good catch matsnuffs and thanks for the correction. : )
I want to know how its 4 oz as well. I stil have no idea why they sell them in 1.15 ounces. It doesn’t work as a multiple, it doesn’t convert evenly to metric. WTF? Is it a nautical ounce? (1.15 statute miles = 1 nautical mile)
I was hoping that it may be sealed good, not in a cardboard tube.
Here’s a better page landing of the package. http://alturl.com/kp9j7 My bad, you still have to click “see full description” or just click on the snuff picture, to get some better views of it.
@Xander i was wondering the very same thing last night!!! i thought there might be some snuff community secret i was unaware of, and would get the, “Oh you silly goose…” response! Glad to know i was thinking intelligently! Nautical oz. is classic btw…lol! @hooked I have no idea how old your purchase is, but the Superior i got comes in the slightly nicer plastic tube. Either way, i don’t think you got hoodwinked. I am very interested in seeing pic when it arrives!
I always thought the filling equipment could not get it precisely at one oz, so they just filled the cylinder, hence the 1.15. And they could not cut the tubes that well either. Just a thought.
I never thought of it that way, sounds right to me.
Just to update, got the package of snuff in today. It was packed in a wax paper like wrapper, tucked in and glued. Needless to say, the snuff was more like dust than anything else. Big disappointment. Not nothing like the 40 year glass jar of Bruton that was still good!
No tubes?! Just a “package” of snuff?
At least you have a piece of American history…it may just be a package of snuff to the average person, but to a person who partakes in snuff it’s an antique, and a collectible. I think it’s pretty cool myself.
Notice the package says " G. W. Gail and Ax". That is very old snuff. American Tobacco bought them out in 1891. I don’t know if Ameican continued to use the name or, if they did for how long, but if your package does not say anything about American Tobacco on it that could be quite old.
I would think after a short “incubation” period you will have a very nice aged snuff. I would suggest humidification up to seventy percent followed by anaerobic storage for several weeks. Not sure how? Just ask.
@ Nachman: I think its much newer. I think it is after the American Tobacco monopoly was broken up. Note the “Helme” logo on the bottom side. I’m pretty sure Helme aquired Superior after the break up, just as they acquired the Garrett mill (but not the Garrett snuff) and many other brands. In early Helme packaging, it would still keep the original maker’s name (such as Gail and Ax) and then say “Geo. W. Helme Co. Successor” Also older snuff packaging did not always include the weight, particularly in that modern looking font. I’d estimate the age of that package to be no more than 40 years old.
@hooked do u plan on using the snuff or keeping it as a collectible?
I don’t see the purpose of collecting it ‘per say’. I HAD to open it and check out the snuff. The snuff is now in a glass jar and the box is still intact. I don’t believe that there is any salvaging the snuff.
That’s a shame bud. Oh well, at least you didn’t throw down like a benjie hopin for some kind of exclusive item. Nice conversation piece as well.
