Hi, I’m a newcomer to snuff, and have been a pipe smoker 4 years and wanted something new. Now I’ve got my wife and I on Gawith’s Apricot snuff for a few weeks, but we live in S Florida, USA and the humidity level’s about 90% most of the time. This leads to every time I step outside, my nose becomes rather stuffy. What would the experts recommend in a high humidity environment? A dry snuff? Moist? Hard menthol? I need help - oh, and what would be a good snuff to move on to from Gawith’s apricot? Thanks!!
I would avoid anything from Pöschl. They’re all likely to have the same effects as the Gawith Apricot. Something dryer, and water-based is better, so basically it leaves out German snuffs. English SP’s are drying, and most people who use them can do so all day. Also English menthols I tend to prefer in the summer months for their cooling and refreshing effect, but to use them (or anything mentholated) all day is bound to cause congestion.
Some of the Dholakia snuffs are quite dry. Sparrow Cool would be a good warm weather snuff.
Thanks for the advice, I’m looking at trying McChrystal’s SP 100 or J & H Wilson SP No. 1. What do you think? I’d like to try the Sparrow Cool but can’t find it anywhere but in large batches of bullets. It’s too bad because I just love the Gawith Apricot but - As soon as I step outside! It’s congestion so bad I find myself resorting back to my tobacco pipe every time.
I always enjoyed Molen’s A/P for outdoor use along with a few others that seemed humidity enhanced. It’s all subjective tho so your mileage may vary. I would second Xander’s advice to avoid Poschl for the time being if its causing congestion. One last mention of another snuff I found nice on humid days was SGs Kendal Brown. For my nose it’s almost impossible to get congested on a coarse grind.
IMHO, JandH out of the two. Heavily scented or mentholated snuffs cause congestion in a significant number of users - I think you might just compund matters with a menthol. Plainer, dryer snuffs are probably the way to go - despite the counter-intuitive aspect, and they have always worked for me in similar conditions. But, everyone is different and experimenting with a wide range is always the best practice. Some people absolutely swear by menthols but they would close my sinuses down in any conditions within an hour. My personal choice would be a plain HDT or Scotch, SP if your nose is not at the fine and powerful stage yet.
Okay thanks for the advice, here’s what I ordered, let me know what you think: Molens A/P Snuff Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original Snuff Samuel Gawith Scotch SP Snuff SP No. 1 Snuff Wilsons Irish High Toast No.22
Hey welcome. I had a terrible time with Poschl snuffs when I first started. They were the only snuff that would make me sneeze. Everytime I’d use them, they would cause sneezing fits. I just traded them off and never looked back. I’d much rather grab an SP instead. There are better mentholated/fruit snuffs available too. Toque has some great mentholated fruity snuffs if that’s what you’re after. Also, it just may be your technique isn’t right yet. Living in Michigan, our humidity can get pretty crazy too. I’ve yet to come across a snuff that my nose can or can’t take due to the weather. Next time you go for a menthol, try a different brand. Poschl definitely doesn’t agree with some people.
I would try Camphor and Mild. It is camphor with lemon/bergamot one of my favourites, you don’t need to blow often with it either. It is ok in humidity as well. I’m in England, where it rains 99% of the time, even though it is a particularly dry year. Ok in all weather. Stefan
@jazzi_mike, Yes! I get sneezing fits every time no matter how much I take. Im hoping these SP snuffs and dry toast don’t do the same. I’m a big fan of pipe tobacco and they all seem to claim a more “natural aroma” which I’m sure will be pleasant on the nose. As far as fruity mentions are concerned I’m sure I’ll order the Toque next and give it a try. Also, @walrus1985, I’ll give the Camphor and mild a shot too. I like the idea of the lemon scent. These are all good suggestions. Thanks so much.
Anyone tried Wilson’s Lemon Toast?
I think I should give Toque a try as well - here’s what I’ve ordered, all 10g cans: Quit Original Spanish Gem Berwick Brown Vanilla Lime Toast Cherry Anyone who’s tried these let me know. I got the quit just because I do like my nicotine!
I live in south florida also. I always start my day with a big pinch of Hedges L260 (heavy menthol) and then outside to let the dogs out. It really clears me up. During the summer I use it off and on all day. Lately it has been McChrystals S’nuff with it.
Spanish Gem, BB, Vanilla, and Lime Toast are all excellent snuffs from Toque. I personally like Spanish Gem enough to have a pound of bulk in reserves. Toque will also help get you used to a finer grind. Enjoy.
If you got the Samuel Gawiths in tap boxes you will hate them.
Yes. I swear by Sam Gawith’s plainer snuffs, but you need to get the tins. ANY mentholated snuff closes down my sinuses in minutes. I like to use it from time to time but follow it up with something ultra fine and dry.
I absolutely love Toque. They make some great snuffs. I’m sure you’ll like most, if not all the Toques you ordered. I like all of the ones you ordered except Vanilla and Cherry, which I haven’t tried. I tend to go for plain or SP-style snuffs. Original is my favorite SP by far and I’ve recently fallen in love with Spanish Gem.
Oh with the Samuel Gawith I got the 10g plastic boxes from SnuffStore.com. where can I find a tin and what’s the difference between the two? And I’m sure I’ll like the Toques, they all had such good reviews. Just ordered the cherry for the flavor as I like Bing Cherry pipe tobacco and theirs is a non-mentholated blend and the fact I had to fill a $20 (US) cart to get free shipping. I HATE the $8 shipping I pay from SnuffStore.com for Royal AirMail, but can’t find any US store to buy European snuffs from without paying $6 for 10 or 12g tins. Any suggestions???
@jazzi_mike, I also tried my “technique” on the Gawith Apricot by taking it off the hand rather than a pinch and by barely sniffing it just enough to get it in the front of my nostrils rather than snorting it up into my sinuses haha. It’s much better but still causes congestion unless I blow my nose often and I DO still sneeze like crazy. Maybe I’m just not a true snuffster yet, but changing my approach does seem to help A LOT!! Thanks for the advice. Maybe it’s not the humidity and perhaps I started this whole discussion on the wrong foot as it has rained 4 times today and I’ve been so far so good with the Gawith’s. But I still think a natural dry snuff is definitely the way to go from now on at least until my nose is accustomed to a few mentholated or fruity blends.
@Jrabevill, what part of South Florida?
Stuart
Of course Miami is SOUTH FL though
Cool, I’m not exactly sure where that is… North I guess! I’m actually in Surfside, in the Miami Beach area.
It’s in the Port St. Lucie, Palm City, and somewhat Ft. Pierce area. A good quiet community with so many seniors that can hardly see you’re even using snuff lol. Oh, just north of West Balm Beach
Ok, now I know, I drive through that area on my way to Sebastian, my favorite vacation place. Sorry I can’t help you with the snuff question. I mostly use scotches and a few toasts. I haven’t had any problems for a long time.
@Jrab $8 for signed for postage is cheap compared to USPS. I’ve just ordered some e liquid from America (to the UK), it is only 150mls and it cost me $9.80 SURFACE mail not signed for insured or anything. They said it would cost nearly $20 for Priority Airmail, signed for. I’ve been given an estimated delivery date of “the end of September”. What I thought was a bargain, what with the dollar being on its arse against the £, has turned out no cheaper and a two month delivery time. Piss take or what! Apparently I was one of the first international customers they had. No bloody wonder. For all it’s faults at least Royal Mail is reasonable, and doesn’t take two feckin months to get here. Sorry for ranting, just letting off a bit of steam. Don’t know if I’ve been scammed or what, I guess I’ll find out in 2 months. Stefan
@Walrus1985, that’s horrible! No problem for the rant, I would be peeved as well.
@Jrab you can get tins of SG snuffs from Mr Snuff, (link at the side of the page). They are a different world apart, compared to the sneezeboxes. They keep the snuff in good condition for a fair while, whereas the tap boxes are usually unfit for use on receipt especially the moist ones. Stefan
@Jrabevill - As Walrus1985 said, SG in tapboxes doesn’t keep well, English snuffs generally seem to go dry quickly when sold in the plastic tapboxes. But you can try rehydrating it, or mixing it with other snuffs and it becomes more palatable. Whereas German snuffs like your Gawith Apricot stay nice for ages in tapboxes due to the paraffin oil.
If you like SPs try McChrystal’s SP snuff because it is a bit drier than other SPs I’ve found. I think any kind of Toast or Scotch would be good too…
