Usually I like about any snuff i get. I recently bought a 25 gm tub of Gawith Hoggarth special medicated snuff…just awful. Smells like you are whiffing some powdered tums lozenges. Should have stuck with my Wilsons SM500, I did get a 25gm of that too, but thought I would try the GW…never ever again. waste of money.
Samuel Gawith Richt Kind; it made me sick, there’s a thread about my experience with it somewhere. It smelled bloody awful too, or rather the smell was way too intense.
packards club. The only snuff I would go with out snuff over taking. The only.
Dean Swift Raspberry. Strange, very strange
Toque espresso. Maybe my tin was just old but there was little to no scent, just a faint hint of soapy burnt coffee.
I got to say Taxi Red’s manure scent really turned me off…
brandasaur, sorry to hear about the Toque snuff…GOTTA BE something easy to explain, all of Rodericks are first rate. some times we find snuff we dont care for. I for one will never ever ever go with a gawith hoggarth. Nope not this cheapskate. Wilsons, Toque and 6 photo for me…
I find that I have to sample Samuel Gawith products with caution. They have an additive used in many (thankfully not all) of their snuffs that I find to be quite unpleasant. Apple was the one that hit me the hardest… had to just dump it, the scent just wouldn’t die.
Oh, I should have mentioned Red Bull. I’m not a menthol lover to begin with, but this stuff takes the cake. I bought some just for the box, knowing that being a menthol snuff I wouldn’t like it. I tried a pinch before dumping it and it was like my nose was frozen for hours. Like bob said, I would rather not snuff at all than take this stuff. I know other people love Red Bull, so if you like menthols then don’t be put off trying it.
@Pennanngalan: I wonder if that additive was the thing that made me ill?
@doctorbeat - I don’t know, I’ve never tried the Richt Kind so I can’t say whether it contains the additive or not. Luckily it doesn’t make me ill, I just find it to be repulsive.
Dholokia Ganga. Too fine, too purfumy.
graybeard19, some Toques offerings are quite nasty but that’s why we got variety. I second the Expresso snuff too. Also Raspberry/Blueberry Menthol.
neftobak
Toque Cheese & Bacon is without a doubt the most disgusting snuff I have ever tried
I have little time for the catpiss soaked cowpat snuffs, ntsu, taxi red etc
Dholokia black is my least appealing. Reminded me of dog poo. I would literally be checking the bottom of my shoe. It has been awhile though, maybe i should dig it out, may have just been me.
i agree with vathek, their is a preference to everyone and while he found the peach melba to be not appealing i like it, better in the evening for me but, to each his/her own and the title of “worst” is going to be based on personal preference. just try a bunch of different ones and you’ll find your niche and stick with what ya like, imo i am not a toast kind of guy
Mine was some raw Rustica from Roderick. Definitely better after aging a bit.
Bruton will probably have to be my least used snuff overall, it has this weird bitterness to it…maybe I just got a bad tube but I find myself wanting to pinch from it less and less
Wilson’s Raspberry is pretty hard to take as well, tastes artificial and is very sneezy.
My apologies to all, I should have titled it…WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE SNUFF
conversation is going well anyway let´s see, i cant tip one i guess, but since i dont want to spoil the fun… nah, sorry - cant decide. unluckly there were a few in the past which i wist to never ever have in my nose again - if possible.
Probably Dholakia’s WOW Wine and Cheese. I don’t know what made me think it would be a good idea.
All very subjective, but the worst snuffs I’ve tried were: An American snuff in Virginia, but I can’t recall the brand (loathsome). J&H Wilson’s Jockey Club (nauseating) Wilson’s Aniseed Extra (hideous) Samuel Gawith’s Otterhound (depraved) Samuel Gawith moist snuffs in the wretched tap-box (abominable) Poesch’s Red Bull (utterly vile) The moist SG snuffs are actually very good, but suffer in plastic boxes. The accolade for the vilest snuff must go to Red Bull.
Another vote for Red Bull! Glad I’m not the only one :o)
Garrett’s Peach Of course… this was one of my VERY early encounters with snuff, before I discovered European snuff.
SG KB SPECIAL DISGUSTING!!!
Crumbs of Comfort… it was no comfort to me!
Only one for Cheese and Bacon. Come on! It’s far worse than that. A couple of months ago I thought I was starting to like it but, no it’s the worst snuff I’ve ever made!
Anything menthol, Its like sniffing Vicks vapor rub. Also Dholokia Black, it’s like a walk in a barn at the fair…
Cheese and Bacon is a bit of a conundrum for me. When I first take it I get nothing but smokey goodness, but after a few minutes I get a big, abusive slap of cheese. After it wears off the initial hit I get phantom cheese whiffs over the next 10 - 15 minutes. I’ll smell nothing and then a slap of cheese and then it’s gone again. Did I imagine the cheese? Could it have been real? DEAR GOD, WHY DOES IT KEEP HAUNTING ME?!?!
Dogwalla, it keeps haunting me too, I think I’ve created a monster!
cheese and bacon. It isnt the horror of the stench, it is the length of the torture that makes it so horrific!
Cheese and Bacon is a good Halloween snuff!
Sounds to me like those Harry Potter jelly beans that were assorted disgusting flavors.
Sam Gawith Kendal London Brown. I find it totally unsnuffable, extremely moist and coarse. Actually if you take a pinch between finger and thumb and squeeze, it leaves an oily smear. You can roll it up like blutac. Must consign it to the “never again” bin along with Royal George and Magnet Peach.
You know I knew people would be saying how much they disliked Cheese & Bacon. Mmmmmmmmm I love the stuff!
The cheese and bacon rants are funny. I happen to be a fan of the stuff! I hope Toque continues to produce it 'cause I know it has some fans out there. I’ve had a few snuffs I didn’t care for but the most repulsive to date was the Poschl sudfrucht. Ugh! And I still couldn’t bring myself to throw it away, so it’s stored away in case I’m ever brave/inebriated enough to try it again…
Wilsons Vanilla and Wilsons Jasmine . The vanilla barelly had any vanilla andthe jasmine smelled like soap. Both went to garbage
Don’t throw anything away… Stick it in the back of the freezer for a few months/years and then try it again. Personal tastes change!
The sad part is, with all the dramatic ranting I’ve been doing about the Cheese and Bacon, is the fact that I love it. That lingering cheese just keeps surprising me no matter how many times I use it. I haven’t found any I really dislike, just some I like more than others. The hot locker room smell in the FUNAR RnR gets a bit cloying after a bit, so it’s good, but not an all day sniff for me.
@howdydave Good advice. I would add: If your tastes still don’t change, we have a trade thread for just such a purpose. Other snuffers are keen for what you may hate.
@vathek You’ve had the Special? I dunno if it’s differnt from regular KB, but something about it is smelling like Rubber or something… I can’t put my finger on it but I hate it. i LOVE plain tobacco scents, Black Rappee, etc. and still don’t like it. Guess it’s just not for me
I am the cheapest soul on the planet. I tried using again the gawith hoggarth or whatever the name. special medicated…uggggh. makes me think of chalk and peppermint mixed with tums. No way I will ever use the 25gm container. not worthy of mixing either…disgusting.
@vathek well hmph. Maybe my batch is bad. Who knows… thanks for clarifying it for me though.
Transistor - All the Sam Gawith Kendal Browns were contaminated a while back and I agree, the small was disgusting. How the batch got past quality control is nothing short of amazing. I sent two one pound containers of KBO back, one after the other. The company has since acknowledged the fault and apologised. You should return the snuff and demand a replacement. Although drums have been recalled the company won’t specify what the fault was. New stock is fine. PS - Never buy KB from a tap box as the contents are always foul.
I guess that we should all be thankful that someone hasn’t made a batch of ‘corned beef and cabbage’ snuff for saint patrick’s day. Bacon and Cheese sounds interesting, but my oh my, cabbage, might be tough. good on a plate, not in your sinuses. Imagine the sneezing…yes I know, bad humor.
On his snuffbox.org.uk website,Prof. P. Griffiths says, in his learned and scholarly way, “Many perfumed snuffs are redolent of a whore’s reticule.” Funniest snuff review ever. As for me, the worst snuff I ever stuck up my nose was Patachouli Cokesnuff I got from a headshop in the 70s. Made me want to claw my face off. To this day I can’t stand the Grateful Dead. I had a similar experience with F&T Seville about 20 years later. Like snorting soap. I quit bathing for weeks afterwards. My snuff hoard contains several samples from India that smell horrifying to me, so I’ve never taken a pinch. One of them is a dark purplish color, and it smells quite “redolent” indeed. If I could bring myself to take a pinch, I believe it would make me blaspheme Brahma and take Vishnu’s name in vain.
I have to say I think WoS Jockey Club is foul…I’ve tried to like it, persevering for several pinches, but it really does smell like Pound-Shop talcum powder crossed with the gussets of the extremely elderly. Not my thing at all! I’m a plain tobacco/non-floral man. Give me Best Dark or Old Paris over the flowery/gussety horror that is Jockey Club anyday!
Although I’ve yet to try a snuff that I couldn’t stand, I’ve noticed that the two Bernard Snuffs in my collection, Doppel Brasil Fehren Shmalzer and Postillion don’t quite agree with my nose. I’ve gotten used to the raisin like flavor of the former, but there’s some sort of weird sort of taste to the postillion initially and both make for an unpleasant drip. I’ve grown to like the Brasil, but i can only take the postillion on occasion. I’ve read reviews of the brasil that make me wonder if i got a different thing. I don’t detect any hints of chocolate or maple. Just figs or raisin.
@dustymoustache, sorry to hear you dont like COKESNUFF’S PATCHOULI one of my old time favorites when I sat around listening to my favorite band, ‘the dreadfull good’ or Grateful Dead…Some tastes are aquired some others dont like. To quote a Bill Murray line in one of his movies…( there are two kinds of people, those who love Neil Diamond, and those who do not) i LOVED THE PATCHOULI cokesnuff. where did they go?
Ammonia and sulphur aromatics in the same snuff, hmmm. Maybe people from Venus would enjoy it.
@Jinder Old Paris plain, really? As far as I’m concerned Old Paris is short for Old lady from Paris’ perfume.
Lotzbeck Perle. Had something of the aroma of burning plastic to me, with the worst back drip I’ve ever tasted. Fortunately I traded it to a friend who likes that sort of thing.
Not my least liked snuff, but FUBAR when taken directly after an SP or English style snuff tastes like cocoa powder to me. Apparently there are different batches of this stuff.
So many here enjoy these varieties that I wasn’t going to say, but putting stuff flavoured like joss up my hooter is not my idea of nirvana either.
Unlike Jinder, I like floral snuffs, but I have to agree with him that WoS Jockey Club has to be one of the snuffs that I had a negative response to. For me, it’s that all the different floral scents clash in a remarkably unpleasant way. QWS Jasmine is another I found to be rather foul. On the “Initial Impression Bad, but Pending Re-evaluation” list are Toque Cheese & Bacon, and Blender’s Golden Pinch. In the case of the latter, it’s the anise in the recipe that I can’t stand. If that fades, I might be able to enjoy it.
I think Golden Pinch is the best floral snuff there is, but if we all liked the same things the world would be a very boring place.
@philipS Are you serious? Wow I can’t believe I just read your reply… sorry for waiting so long… I KNEW something was wrong with that batch… Thanks for telling me because I thought “I really should have enjoyed that snuff wtf is wrong with me?” PS it wasn’t from a tapper it was a 25g vacuum tin
@bob : Aw shit, Packards Club Snuff, really? And to think that I added that snuff to my next order… I guess I’ll see if I like it or not LOL
@MikeMoose: Packard’s Club was the first snuff I ever tried. My friends and I didn’t know what we were doing and snorted the stuff up as hard as we could; not a very good introduction. It’s a menthol with some fruity undertones (I didn’t get the fruity undertones when I was snorting it hard however). This snuff has slowly grown on me. I still have the same dispenser I bought the first time so I am not rushing through it; I keep it in my truck for when I catch myself without anything else. It’s not a fabulous snuff but it’s definitely not bad. If you like menthols, you may find it is quite nice.
" @Jinder Old Paris plain, really? As far as I’m concerned Old Paris is short for Old lady from Paris’ perfume. " I laughed out loud when I read that ! I do like Old Paris. I had some about a year or two ago and didn’t care for it. I tried some last week, and its lost some of its pungency and I like it now. @mikemoose - Packards Club from Poschl ain’t bad. I’m not a big musk fan but luckily its not too overpowering in that department and its easy to take, like most poschls.
@Vathek: Boiled eggs are worse than bacon; it’s a scientific fact. Kidding, you make an excellent point. Mine least favorite would be the cedar and clary sage snuff I made a while back, followed by anything with menthol in any quantity. Thankfully there are peppermint snuffs out there if I want that note.
I’m not a big Menthol fan myself, honestly I like snuffs where the Menthol takes a backseat… Like the Zwiefacher …
While I initially was fond of it, I slowly strayed away and now I have come to the conclusion that I absolutely detest WoS Aniseed Extra. It burns in a different kind of awful way such that I can’t even take enough of it to get my vitamin N. I would trade it away but it has gone clumpy and dry and is almost unusable. Something in it also destroyed one of my bullets; etched itself into the plastic. It’s a crying shame because I do love the aroma of aniseed, but not in this form.
@Mr. Nose, Fredrick Tranters Country Doctor has a great aniseed flavor. It also has a little camphor in it.
I have a new least favorite: I ground up various cigars, had some tobacco laying around from failed experiments etc. I alkalyzed it and moistened it and put it in a jar to ferment, but it still smells revolting. It’s kinda like chcolate, vanilla, coffee, and barbeque. Not only is the smell horrible, but it is extremely strong too :o( I’m hoping that if I leave it long enough, it will mellow out and become palatable. Maybe I should try toasting it…
Cravo & Canela by Guarany (Clove and Cinammon) - it has a toasted smell. I also didn’t like the “natural toast” by toque. These aren’t bad snuffs I guess that toasts aren’t my style.
@doctorbeat : TOAST that badboy!
@Mikemoose: yes, I think I will. Maybe it will drive away some of the badness! I’ll have to wait until the wife is not home and try it…
Or… Stove it. In a sealed jar. Remember to let the jar sit for some days before opening. Times and temperatures are the variables. The lower the temperature the longer the time. Something like in a crock pot on low for four hours is about right. Try a small batch first to see if you like the results.
Least favourite is any sweet scotch. they all have a sickly sweet drip to me. especially honey bee… it has a smell akin to dog piss in my nose.
Smith’s of Charing Cross Road - Golden Cardinal?
Dholakia Medicated, smells manure-y to me, But I like the sparrow cool.
Also the F&T’s with musk, I just can’t, and the scent stays with you.
Afraid to try Cheese and Bacon, or Wine and Cheese-
A empty snuff tin
Any perfumed florals.
packard club
Samuel Gawith Chocolate Snuff.
It smells like grounded up used charcoal from a barbecue.
Why would somone buy Red Bull if they know they hate Menthol?
Radfords snuff is my least favorite, NOT Readfords Premium, which is my neck and neck favorite with FC Bayern as of a week now. Radfords Snuff comes in a 25g tin, I bought it thinking it was Radfords Premium, too bad they share nothing in common besides the fact that its snuff and they have some menthol. Radfords Snuff had a disgusting type of menthol in it, a far more medicinal type, like straight up Vicks on steroids, I just opened the tin to check it out, and the instant wiff I got made me cringe. If anyone really likes this one send me a pm
Toque Absinthe. It smelled like licorice to me and I just… can’t stand licorice. The smell or the taste.
TAXI it is
Dark Horse Raspberry, tastes like it was flavored with green raspberries.
I also go with Taxi. Not a fan of dung.
Buttercup and Navy Sweet. The drip has that artificial sweet taste.
There are a few. For starters I second giaach on Dholakia Ganga. I don’t mind the grind so much as the aroma in the nose. Smells like cheap rose scented perfume and it stays FOREVER. I can take a sniff of it and still smell it late into the next day, even after several snorts of other blends. I still have 25g that I have to figure out what to do with.
Second would be F&T Bordeaux. Very perfumey. Thanks Slide for taking that stuff off my hands. I hope you’re enjoying it more than I did.
I also have a love/hate relationship with scotches. I hate them until I take them for a few days and get used to them again. I only keep them around for emergencies when I run out of HDT or Viking Dark.
That peach scotch - magnet? - awful.
So far mine is Toque Spanish Gem, I bought it based upon the reviews. It is the only Toque I have tried. There is something in the flavor that doesn’t jive with me, I aired it out several times, then had to give up.
Dude I love Spanish Gem. I cannot get enough of that one. I like it as much as Toque Original, which is my favorite SP.
@Bloodnativ I second Dholakia Ganga. Kamal is pretty awful as well. Manjul is not bad, but I love clove flavored stuff. I traded my 25g tins on the trade thread. I tried a few times and I just could not do it.
@jazzi_mike, so do many people. I was very disappointed that I didn’t like it but the nose knows ya know. That’s alright, they have so many other flavors for me to choose from, it is just a matter of time.
For me it is any and all of the American Scotches.
Dholakia Kamal, just awful.
Anything anise laden like Tranter’s Country Doctor…
F&T’s Seville at the moment LOL . Packard’s Club, seriously guys?! It’s good!
I used to really dislike florals, now the Dholakia’s (Ganga & Kamal) are daily snuffs for me…funny how the nose and preferences change throughout the years, I would recommend hanging on to those, you never know what you may enjoy tomorrow.
Probably Toque Violet or Toque Coke. First is way too strong for me and the second I just can’t smell anything. Ironic as Toque is one of my favourite manufacturers but you can’t expect to like a whole range. There are some pretty ghastly GH and Pöschl snuffs too which turn my stomach. Can’t think of which ones right now. Also can’t stand Wilson’s a Royal George. And stop dissing cheese and Bacon lol It’s one of the best snuffs out there! Shame on you Rodders (j/k). But pease, never stop making it. It’s magnificent. (I know tastes vary). Oh, also really dislike Wilson’s French Carotte. It smells of soap. The F&t version is nice though. Not a fan of Jockey Club either.

@scopopulus Homeless guy back sweat I would guess.
