Mine would have to be Tom Buck. A CLOSE second would be tied with Gold Label or Grand Cairo. I know there’s another thread on here somewhere JUST like this one, but our search option is whack right now…
Would have to be double deuce. There’s just something about the aroma that’s captivating. Tom Buck is nice too. WoS does a good job.
Now that is a hard question…I pretty exclusively snuff either Wilsons of Sharrow or J&H Wilsons, with some Toque thrown in there sometimes, and Sharrow is definitely my number one brand. Overall I’d probably have to go the traditional route and say Best SP, but I love SP 100 and SP 2 as well. Lemon Grove is also delicious. Final answer; Best SP. Simple, tasty, perfect.
French Carotte - it smells like velvet feels (lol). Camphor & Mild is nice too though.
22!
Yes, Best SP is my favourite, but for me all the SPs from Wilsons are simply wonderful.
S.M. Blue.
Crumbs of Comfort
Grand Cairo
This is a hard one for me. After sampling most of their range, I now have six bulk WOS tubs. But I notice that the Camphor & Mild is going down the quickest. It has to be Camphor & Mild.
Definetly Lemon Toast. One of the best snuffs I have ever had.
Camphor and Mild for me too. Coming in a close 2nd and 3rd are SP100 and SM Blue respectively. Stefan
Grand Cairo. Tho to be fair there are still some WoS flavors I haven’t tried.
Aniseed Extra…presently.
Tom Buck, hands down. It’s the only European snuff I use at the moment (save for the occasional pinch of O&G).
Tom Buck for me. Followed very closely by Apricot.
@bigmick is the WoS’ Apricot menthol?
Grand Cairo… #1
Raspberry! It is the ultimate candy snuff. I can get through 5g in a couple of hours and my nose loves it. Camphor and Mild would probably be my non-candy favorite.
Right now it is Tom Buck, though I have only tried that, Lemon Grove, Rose, and Extra Menthol at this time. I have many more to try and I find the prospect delightful!
Best SP Tom Buck Carnation Rose of Sharrow Get some reviews posted guys!!
@transistor, no menthol in the Apricot.
WoS makes more than a few snuffs that I enjoy greatly, so picking a single one almost seems like slighting the rest. However, judging by what I use the most, I’d have to say Honey Menthol. But Grand Cairo and SM 500 are not far behind, not to mention many others.
love Best SP, Strasbourg, TB and now some Apple Blackcurrant
@snuffster can my review thread be moved over?
If you mean a thread like this, no, because its not for discussions, but for single reviews: Just copy and paste whatever you want (minus any comments), open a discussion, click on reviews and it will appear. Do that for each indivdual snuff so they appear as individual articles, unless you are reviewing a range in one post like I’ve done with a couple.
I think I may have a solution. See how you like it.
@Juxtaposer - good idea, very neat. I’ve closed it off so its just like the rest bar a mouse click.
I’m dying to try the Peach Melba! I guess my favorite so far is still Chocolate Orange, followed by Sandalwood occasionally. WoS does make many fine snuffs, and they’re what I started with. I love Apricot, which was the first snuff I really enjoyed. I get into Tom Buck once in a while, and the IHT No 22 is a rare and much-loved treat. Good thread.
Gold Label But Raspberry is also very nice. and Best SP is great, too.
Toast No. 20
Looking at the WoS site, there’s Menthol, Extra Menthol, Menthol Plus and Super Menthol, all as different individual snuffs!
half of them
@Sloth: yes, I bought all 4 at once to compare them. Menthol Plus (ironically has the least menthol of the 4) was my favorite. Super Menthol seems to be the O&G competitor. Of course there’s also 5 SM’s: SM, SM 500, SM Gold, SM Blue and SM Brown. to all: The Wilsons section of the official snuff list in the FAQ is finished as of last night. I think I have all their latest updates. PM me with corrections.
Grand Cairo is very popular here. On the list it’s one of those snuffs that disappears and reappears like a Tommy Cooper conjuring trick. I queried this with Carol some years ago and was told that the flavourings for Grand Cairo are not always available. If Grand Cairo becomes unavailable again then don’t panic, it will almost certainly be temporary.
I don’t have a favorite, but Grand Cairo at least is in the top five. I have a good supply here, but if there is ever a shortage, I will know who to blame. (Hint: his avatar is a beehive)
@Xander - Cheers for that. WoS seems to like doing their minor variations on the same kind of theme, which is fair enough…
I don’t usually use this highly flavoured sort of snuff, but I think Crumbs of Comfort is a real treat sometimes.
I haven’t tried all of them yet (got the sampler), but my favorite so far has been Morlaix. I get in the mood for Kendal Brown sometimes, but it’s a bit too “moist” for my daily use (but good when I’m craving something more earthy). Lemon Toast wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m excited to try Aniseed next.
@sudosnuff: I’ve never heard WoS Kendal Brown descrbed as moist or earthy. I found it medium dry and floral. Now, GH and SG KBs I would definately call moist and earthy. Are you sure it wasn’t one of them? If not, I want the WoS one you don’t like.
@Xander: I suppose floral is a good description also, but to me it’s more earthy. Maybe a freshly watered flower bed? As far as moist, to me it seemed much more moist than the other WoS in the sampler. It more easily clung to my fingers, feeling like it had more moisture (this could be totally wrong, just felt like it), and it felt much more wet in my nose. That’s one of the reasons I don’t use it daily; I get a lot more nasal drip than with other varieties. As far as the others, sorry mate, already gave 'em away :)! Me and a few friends sat down and sampled all of them and took away the ones we liked the best. I’ll let you know if the Aniseed experiment doens’t work out, though!
So far, it is EXTRA MENTHOL for me but i only had 3 from Wilson so far (the other 2 were Crumbs Of Comfort, which i really like to take and the Apricot which is just plain and unintersting imho).
I’ve only had one and I did like it enough to reorder it and hopefully in future I’ll be able to try more but for the time being it’s Prime Minister
All the WoS blends I’ve tried I’ve liked. One of the ones I keep coming back to is the Aniseed Extra. Very nice, but strong menthol in there too. Nice for waking up in the morning. The Aniseed and Eucalyptus is also nice too, but it has a slightly sweet licorice note that lasts very long in the nose–you have to Like licorice a fair amount (I find) to groove on this one, which I do. My newest WoS love is Best Dark. All of the tins that I have gotten from them have always been very fresh and that’s always a plus in favor of any label. Best Dark is not complicated. It’s a moist, dark, medium grind, fairly high moisture snuff that is so easy to take. It has a light orange scent imbedded within a pretty high quality rich, deep tobacco base. Very pleasant. The tobacco base and the light orange (?) essence work really well together and neither intrude on the other.
I’ve only tried the toasts and the sp’s. I like lemon toast and SP 100. edm
Tom Buck, hands down. That being said, I’ve never tried one I didn’t like. Chocolate Orange was probably my least favorite, but it’s still good. EDIT: lol I already responded to this thread.
Best SP … I would go with that.
Camphor and Mild. It is such a great snuff. Honestly, most of the snuffs I’ve tried from WoS have been great, but Camphor and Mild is the best.
I’ll second that, Canphor&Mild, is for me too.
Best SP
Strasbourg, hands down.
Mmmm… Royal George.
Gold label is under-appreciated imo Best Dark is pretty good too Grand Cairo is amazing and so is Tom Buck
@SCasey: In response to your ?, its bergamot in the Best Dark, same as the SPs. Bergamot is a hybrid of a particular orange and a particlar lemon vaiety and is a common snuff scent but is most well known for the scenting of Earl Grey tea.
@Xander Interesting. I first got really interested in snuff after I tried Wilson’s SP and realized that there was bergamot in it! After that realization I was on fire to discover snuff in it’s many varieties. I think the first snuff I tried was a mentholated one, which was okay, but when I realized that some snuff was flavored with bergamot and a whole host of other essences, I was stoked. Love bergamot, and coincidentally, Earl Grey tea. Thanks for that info about Best Dark. Appreciate it. Best…
I’m also really enjoying WoS Brunswick too. Like you said @Xander it is a bit more complex and rich than WoS Best Dark. I’m liking WoS Princes too…
From this angle the first 12 tins from the left.
@scasey if you like bergamot you gotta try Tom Buck.
@transistor I plan on it. I’ve heard some refer to it as a strong SP style. Is that accurate in your opinion? There are So Many that I want to try. I’ve got quite a list going and Tom Buck is certainly on it.
Yes. A strong SP with a bite. I love it.
Without an doubt: Crumbs of Comfort! It is the only snuff I’ve bought in bulk.
S.M. Blue Of course… I haven’t tried every blend.
You would have to be very committed to try all their blends. For one thing, there are so many. For another, there are so many that are so similar that it gets boring after a while.
I’ve tried a lot of WoS and so far my favorites are in different categories. For a dessert I’m torn between Royal George and Chocolate Orange. For nic kick I go for the Gold Label. For an SP I like Tom Buck. But the one that has more than the basic citric notes of Tom Buck without the sweetness of Royal George and some of the complexity while having a kick almost as good as Gold Label is Grand Cairo. I tried it a month ago and will definitely have to order more than a 10g tin next time.
Irish High Toast Tom Buck Grand Cairo.
Anybody for a fresh hit of Camphor and Mild? Hmmmm…!
Number 1 WOS snuff for me so far is Crumbs of Comfort. I am starting to get into Best SP and the more I use it the more I appreciate it. It leaves me wanting a bit for something “more”. I am thinking either Tom Buck or Grand Cairo might be the answer to that “more” I am looking for. Ken
Princes, IHT No. 22, SPs and the rather rich but well-balanced Best Dark for variety. I also liked Cyprus which was a pure Latakia snuff and not a mixture. Judging from the responses here the old snuffs like S.P and those from the 1984 Grand Sharrow range (which includes Grand Cairo) are the most popular. Varied tobacco mixtures with contrasting colours and grind would make for genuine variety. Recent snuffs are inexpressibly dull - simply adding a confectionary-like essence to their standard mill - and churning out a new name.
Meanwhile all the SPs. I think WoS are really fantastic with SPs.
Best Dark, Gold Label and Grand Cairo are all massive treats. Brunswick and SP100 are winners, too.
Grand Cairo Tom Buck Crumbs of Comfort
My Tops: 1. Grand Cairo 2. Brunswick 3. Princes 4. Whiskey 5. SM 500
IHDT #22
SS
3. Tom Buck
Gonna be trying out the WoS Gold Label tonight, and I’ll see if it makes it on my list of Liked WoS ! :-P
Best sp.
Had to review my answer little: my Wilsons of Sharrow favourite is Irish High Dry Toast #22, but to be honest, it could be replaced by another toast or American scotch. Really unique WoS snuffs I like are Royal George, Grand Cairo and Irish Toast #20; there simply isn’t anything like them. Of course Honey Menthol is lovely, as is Whiskey and other booze flavoured WoSsies.
Rum and Blackberry
Tom Buck/QES/SP Best(Best SP)
Strasbourg
Jockey Club (far better than anyone else’s in my opinion)
Brunswick (haven’t found anything else quite like it)
Camphor and Mild
Gold label crumbs of comfort best dark but there are quite a few more I’d like to try
It’s a tie between Grand Cairo and Brunswick.
Sherry - as of last week. I tried it on a whim because I like snuffs with booze in them and it has rapidly become my all day, every day snuff. A very subtle sherry flavour that actually lessens as you get used to it, leaving a kind of tart aftertaste. Pure luck that I found it because for one reason or another I hardly every buy snuff, very recommended.
At the moment Lemon Toast
Camphor and mild and Brandy.
Tough one!! So many good snuffs to choose from, I like most of 'em. One not listed here that deserves a mention is Irish Coffee. I’ve said it before, there is nothing particularly ‘Irish’ or even ‘coffee’ about it, but it is nonetheless a very, very enjoyable snuff, that seems to tick so many boxes. A hint of burn, nice vitamin N amount, a good all rounder that finds its way into my nose on a very regular basis…love it!!!
Strausburg or however it’s spelled.
Lemon Grove and Camphor and Menthol.
Crumbs of Comfort followed by Queens Extra Strong and Brunswick…if we’re considering Wilson’s F&T lineup I’d go with Macouba.
I wold have said Crumbs of Comfort and have just bought another 25g tin for my collection, however I also bought a tester of Prime Minister which is similar and now I don’t know. Guess I’ll have to have both…
My favourites are:
Crumbs of comfort - A lovely spearmint snuff. Similar to menthol, but with flavour whereas as menthol is more of a medicated smell/feeling.
Royal George - Like a dessert snuff. It’s has a cake like flavour, most reminiscent of a sponge cake. Very unique flavour.
Strawberry - More like strawberry milkshake but that’s even better for me.
Grand Cairo - A warm, mild SP.
My favourite at the moment is still Vanilla Ice, it’s the one I’ve re-bought most frequently and don’t tire of.
I’ve tried quite a lot of Wilsons snuffs now, as the small tins are a good and inexpensive way to explore the various types, and I’ve had several assorted gift packs and discovered some real gems that way that I wouldn’t have thought of trying otherwise, besides my usual menthols. Rose, Strasbourg and Jockey Club are my favourite non-mentholated ones right now.
@Gentleman Snuff to me still means Jockey Club or SP No.1 - even with the cornucopia now available on the interweb!
Tom Buck or Queens Extra Strong for sure
Tom buck gold label and #20 in that order
At the moment #IHT 22 Tom Buck Lemon Grove Still need to try some others…after skimming this thread, looks like I need some CoC, Strausbourg, Camphor n mild…next on my new snuff order list. Funny how these didn’t excite me before and now I’m interested
Is SP 100 finer than Best SP?
camphor and mild
Yes, Thunderbird, SP 100 does seem finer than Best SP. On one of the threads, I think I read that they are the same thing, with SP 100 simply ground finer. But, to me, they don’t seem the same. Somehow I get a soft creamy note from Best SP and, actually, a better hit of nicotine - but that’s just me. Anyway, I do love Best SP!
Apricot-- not overwhelming on chemical-y flavouring and makes my nose ring…
This is like asking “which is your favorite child”? There are so many good to great snuffs on the menu I’d be hard pressed to narrow my list, lest I offend. She Who Must Be Obeyed has been a WoS Raspberry fanatic for about 30 years, so that’s her vote.
Tom Buck, Aniseed Extra, Grand Cairo, & Royal George
and Brunswick
It’s got to be Royal George for me, no-one else makes a snuff similar to it as far as I can tell. Another light toned one I like is Strasbourg, it’s like freshly washed garden-dried linen to me, and Best Dark is my fave for a dark, moist snuff. I wonder what Worst Dark was like…
Tom Buck–No question.
SM Blue - SM 500
Tom buck
Best Dark for me. I do like the scent of many others but find they often bypass the nose and land on the back of the tongue instead (my awkward nose doesn’t help matters). That said, I’m having a “WoS Night” tonight, and have just decanted 5 new to me snuffs into screw top tins (used Toque tins) for ease of use, and am enjoying myself. Lemon Grove was a bit too fine and a bit chokey for me, but liked the scent. Ice Liquorice is bloody lovely, but one for occasional use I suspect. Strasbourg (yes, it’s taken me over a year to try it) was rather nice too, but I think I still had some Ice Liquorice lingering in there which stopped me getting a true scent. I’ll certainly be trying that again tomorrow. Next up will be Thyme and Lemon and Spearmint Plus. I tend to be more of a Kendal fan generally, but I have to support my “home town” every now and again (Much easier with F&T which I am a huge fan of … apart from HDT :-& )
just started on a tin of wos jasmine, and i rather like that too.
Moro Moro. Just found an opened 15 gm tin of it that got buried in the clutter and it was totally engulfed with mold, so that clinches it for me, got to keep it refrigerated or frozen if I’m not going to use it often. edit: whoops, wrong thread @-)
Admittedly, I’ve sampled only a limited selection of WoS. However, Royal George is at the moment my favorite from them and will always hold a permanent place in my rotating collection.
