mine is magnet menthalated. i bought this hoping for a standard menthol snuff, what i received was a snuff with a very moist, lumpy consistancy, which had such a sharp menthol flavour it physically hurt to snuff it and brought tears to my eyes. overall a very poor investment
Ozona Cherry and Dholakia Fruit Cake are my least favorite snuffs. Ozona Cherry just reminded me of ground Hall’s cough drops…
The worst snuff I ever bought was FUBAR Shot of Rum. Overpowering artificial rum flavor; dry, sand-like consistency. Pure crap. I will never buy any FUBAR snuff again.
toque peanut butter is my number three least favorite snuff I’ve tried. I really couldn’t finish the tin or barely start it. Though I still recommend it because I think it’s good. Just doesn’t agree with me. Second grossest O.G. actualy. Both just had something that I can’t put my finger on that just doesn’t come out right in my nose. My biggest can’t stand can’t figure out how anyone can stand it is Packards Club. I’d rather nick then use packards club. That’s not far off from saying I’d rather be kicked in the balls then fill in the blank.
This one’s easy: English Rose by Gawith Hoggarth.
I’m a snuff noob only about five weeks in and only tried 20-22 different scents but the one that turned me off was Dholakia Orange Chocolate.
Jockey Club by Gawith Hoggarth. Like squirting the cheapest possible perfume up your nostrils. Nasty, nasty, nasty.
French Carrotte.
The only snuff I’ve ever tried in which I could find no redeeming qualities was McChrystal’s Clove. It reminded me of very strong ground up cloves, combined with powdered metal, I’m sure I could think of many others to mention if I ever tried any food-scented snuffs, which I avoid like actual “work.” F&T Morlaix is pretty bad from a philosophical point of view as it attempts to put a sensuous, erotic spin on your relationship with your grandmother. Same with French Carotte as noted above.
WoS French Carrotte and F&T Kendal Brown. Far too overpowering.
Anything by G&H IMO, I’ve tried at least 10 of their snuffs and disliked every one. Stefan
Toque Bourbon, very clumpy and a rather unpleasant smell which lingered far to long
WOS’ Royal George, to me it tasted like baby powder.
Taxi Menthol. No words can describe how terrible it is.
@ Roderick 100 year satisfaction, huh. In that case I might as well let you know I have a problem with a few of your snuffs: Menthol Cheese and Bacon Toast and Marmalade Spanish Gem My problem with all of these is basically with the tins they are in. While they were full when I got them, they are almost completely empty now. I am not sure if they are leaking or if the snuff is just magically evaporating.
@Pieter, I like taxi menthol! I shall have a pinch now, me thinks.
Bradmajor i thoroughly disagree with your view on jockey club, i enjoy the flowery fragrances.
McChrystals Clove, Dholakia Wine and Cheese, Toque Pomegranate, all the mentholated Poschl snuffs (except Packards Club and President) and Samuel Gawith Jockey Club. The Dholakia Wine and Cheese is the worst of the lot for me though.
what does everyone have against jockey club? its got a lovely flowery fragrance
Jockey club is soapy and over-sweet. I second magnet menthol as worst snuff however; a touch too hard and its like being slapped with a minty brick.
@f.j.craig: I don’t particularly enjoy Samuel Gawith’s or Wilsons’ Jockey Club either, but they’re both magnificent snuffs compared to that Gawith Hoggarth abomination.
i don’t think i have ever come across a snuff that i have found totally unpleasent however i would third that magnet menthol snuff is the worst snuff i have tried.
I’ve had Jockitch Club. A bit too perfumey. Reminds me of… well I dunno because I’ve never been to hell.
In no particular order: Magnet Peach, Rockit Cherry Pop, Gawith Apricot, QWS Sandalwood, QWS Jasmine, FUBAR RnR, Dean Swift Jasmine, Dean Swift Camelopard, Toque Cheese & Bacon, Ozona Raspberry, Ozona Cherry. I think French Carotte, Jockey Club and Royal George are pretty nice when used in moderation. I love Toque Pomegranate, and McChrystal’s Clove. Don’t know what’s the matter with you guys…
I wouldn’t say it’s the worst snuff. That belongs to Gletscher Prise. Toque Pom and McC Clove are wonderrrrrful snuffs.
Gletscher Prise gets my vote for worst. The only German snuff I have ever bought.
Wilsons Jockey Club is the best example of the style, and I periodically enjoy the Gawith Hoggarth offering in moderation. There is something about the Samuel Gawith one though that reminds me of cheap, nasty granny perfume. The Wilsons and GH versions seem more ‘masculine’ to my nose. I wouldn’t say any of the three were daily snuffs for me!
My worst is Zuka Black! Terrible, good job it was a fee-bee thrown in with an order.
Now that I recall, Buttercup was really bad for a simple, unadorned snuff. The butter tasted like the ersatz butter flavoring you get with microwave popcorn. I emptied the smashbox out to use it for other purposes.
GH Strawberry, definitely. Smells like Shake ‘N’ Vac. Awful, awful stuff.
I shall be the heretic here and say Crumbs of Comfort is the worst I’ve ever had. Just can’t stand spearmint!
Gourmand (food associated), medicated (hospital pathology dept.), acrid perfumes (Essex Girl) or after-shave, soap flakes, baby powder and cake crumbs.
Snuff Store (UK) Blenders Bundle; it smells to me like vomit.
3 worsts so far: Toque Berwick Brown – apparently this was supposed to smell lik horse saddles or their soap (or according to what everyone else has said, at least something good and entirely different than what I got in both bullet adn then 10g tin), smelled like old lady’s perfume to me. I tried to hide this in other snuffs and was so bad I ended up throwing out ao massive amount (probably well over over 50g) of subsequently just really screwed up snuff that I ended up having to throw out Anything ‘sandalwood’ or ‘jasmine’ (QWS being the worst but unfortunately Toque also got in there too) – I still have some of these in bullets (and QWS are big bullets) and not sure I’m going to be able to hide them enough in other snuffs, they may end up just hitting the trash ANything Rose, lavender, violet, or apricot – same as above having bullets and they may just end up trashed if my hiding them in other snuff tricks don’t work
Just stick them on the trade/sale, someone may want them. The bullets are decent and reusable.
Crumbs of comfort and all mentholated snuffs suck IMO.
Oh and one in particular that makes me sick is Toque chocolate. Nauseating and bitter at the same time. Eeww!!
@ Viking; Just took my first toots of Toque Chocolate, and I concur wholeheartedly. Sorry Roderick, The can’t all be home runs.
Toque Whiskey and Honey. Yuk
Hard to define “worst”. Do you mean flavour you most disliked? or low quality? Ive mostly had toque and Wilsons of sharrow, and both of those suppliers have been rather good. (my 6 big tin order of toque arrived last week and i have been snuffing myself stupid between all that and the variety of wilsons stuff i liberated from the local tobacconnists.) My least favourite flavour thus far is Toques Cheese and Bacon. Simply because cheese and bacon smells like sweaty old socks and faint arse so its not really the snuffs fault it is simply accurately portraying the stench of the subject matter.
The only bad snuff I’ve had is Zuka/Akuz. I’ve found several I intensely dislike, but that’s a reflection of the flavor not the snuff. Anything floral or sandalwood is off my list. I only keep one tin of menthol snuff around, but use it very seldom. The most horrid flavor to me is F&T French Carotte. I’d start smoking again if this was the only snuff out there.
It’s so true - “One man’s meat is another man’s poison” or “One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor” Toque Berwick Brown is one of my favorite’s and it does smell like “Saddle Soap on Leather” to me very pleasant.
F&T Seville
There are very few snuffs that I find completely useless. Most brands have something unique and charming so it’s hard to pick favorites. Least favorites are much easier. The brand with the most “gag inducing” losers has to be Gawith Hogarth. Floral or fruit, they all make me wretch. Florals are somewhere between Jean Nate (an awful drugstore cologne) and scented kitty litter. Fruits are pretty much spot on with their Koolaid analogs Maybe their plain snuff is OK, but I’m not inclined to try it. How a company can survive foisting off such utter crap is beyond my understanding. I guess enough people like their spiffy mirror-finished tap boxes.
@stitch: You ought to try GH Kendal Brown. Course, good nose burn and delicious. If you like menthols, their CM is no slouch.
I like a lot of the GH line. I swear a lot of it comes down to the nose it goes into. Like for instance I love the cologne finish in thier strawberry yet find the cologne smell in Packards club to be a close second to what you find in kitty litter.
I’ll second Nachman - the GH KB and CM are both good snuffs. Their SP, Plain and Irish D are also pretty good, though I find rest to be iffy at best. The common factor, with the exception of the CM, is that they are fairly or totally plain snuffs. Also worth noting that they are better if bought in bulk, even the 25g tubs keep the snuff fresher and moister than the rather useless dispensers. All just my opinion of course.
It’s comforting to see that there are others out there who aren’t crazy about Crumbs of Comfort because of the Spearmint. And to amplify the point, F&T French Carotte smells like the worst granny perfume ever. I’m also not wild about Bon Bon. It’s like one of those fruit cakes that somebody always gives you around Christmas that has the density of a neutron star.
OK, I would try GH’s Irish D or Plain if offered a pinch. I was perhaps a bit harsh, but it’s only my opinion, nothing more. I haven’t exactly thrown out my shiny golden boxes of GH; they don’t take up much room. If snuff became unavailable here I would probably take comfort knowing that I will never completely run out.
Magnet Peach is my worst though there was some rusty old Bruton.
I knew you had good taste, Juxtaposer.
LMAO@ this entire thread! I have not laughed that hard in a good while; thanks. I have to stick up for the Gletscher Prise; love that snuff, and always carry it with me. My least favourite of all was probably Bernard’s Zwiefacher, since it tastes exactly like Robotussin, which I abused in my youth to the point that I cannot stand the smell. All vying for second would be Jaap’s Prins Regent, Macuba, Pompadour, and Hollandse Bolongaro; can’t stand them at all. Oh, but there was the Dholakia Rum Blast I got for free in an order from Tom; hideous and sickly sweet!
I’ve been quite lucky, I’ve yet to take a snuff that has repulsed or offended me. However a small number have failed to live up to my expectations, namely Zuka Black and the Apricot and Mint flavours from Paul Gotard. Is it just me or is Paul Gotard overpriced and boring?
@ slobandtom: Wow…Molens Prins Regent, along with Latakia AO 1860, are among my “can’t live without 'em” favorites. Prins Regent is like a holiday of spices…like drinking a warm cup of gluhwein at a Weinachtsmarkt in Germany…like cinnamon rolls on Sunday morning; s’cuse me while I take a pinch.
Just about all Poschl. The funny thing is that they do the occasional superb snuff like Gawith and Gletcherprise.
@Z_2K: just had a pinch of the Prins Regent upon reading your post; so far I prefer gluhwein I do love the Latakia AO 1860 though…
Taxi Mentol 4 sure!
Magnet Peach. Also, I once left the top of a tin of Toque chocolate slightly loose and it went rancid for some reason - it literally made me sick when I tried a pinch.
Only one I’ve tried so far that I don’t like is McChrystals Violet. It was like putting soap shavings up my nose or something.
QWS Sandalwood! I’ve gotten this as a sample a few times with my snuff orders and I completely dislike the scent.
Sun - Rangeeli. This snuff literally brings me to the verge of throwing up, I am still trying to bring myself to appreciate it however. I compare the scent to vomit, perhaps if I can think of something pleasant to compare it to… any ideas?
trade it to somebody who wants it… that might possibly be me, not sure. I have a 20g tin of it just now and to me the scent would be great if it weren’t a little too strong (this is one I am hoping will fade over time because then it would be great, I have been considering mixing it with FUBAR Grunt or Dholakia Sparrow since to me they have similar but better and in a pleasing degree scents) I don’t know where you live or how hard that would be to do, if I really even personally want to make that trade or what I’d have to trade in return that you’d want (I don’t have a lot of any one snuff bu I have a little bit of a whole lot of snuffs and I’m also kind of a tiightwad on containers as a result) but hang onto it, doesnt’ seem to be a super popular snuff but somebody, even if not me, might want it eventually (and I know I need to take my own advice more… I have admittedly gotten all annoyed at snuffs I can’t tolerate to the place I can’t stand to even have them stinking up the same room I am in and in a reactive moment have tossed things I could have traded)
@NJE03: no, you’re absolutely right; I’ve compared it elsewhere to the scent I would get if I consumed a grapefruit, then vomited it up later. Sun’s ‘Sher’ has the same scent in it. I wonder what it is?
slobandtom “no, you’re absolutely right”? who’s ‘yes you’re absolutely wrong’ then? about what? I didn’t deny NJ’s experience I suggested holding onto it for trading purposes to someone who doesn’t necessarily smell it the same way (I think a can of rangeeli is the current reason between you and I we might meet up some day and if I’m not super careful I have a feeling I could end up with a bunch of almost everybody’s rangeelie that uses this forum lol. I realize I’m in the minority here and unfortunately while its okay by me its not so great that I want everybody’s to end up with a great stockpile of it lol, this is partly why I said I might not personally want NJ’s tin of it because I’m probably gonna end up with yours slobandtom lol) Some people smell it differently from others I don’t think there’s a ‘wrong or right’ here For example Almost everybody else here thinks Toque Berwick Brown is great or at least okay but that one gets on my nerves like nothing else (and it was my first instance in fact of first trying to mix it and then throwing something away I should have just held onto, somebody would have taken that one off my hands in trade)
Well sure; I think, like with some other things, it’s implicitly understood that we’re talking about a thing which is experienced subjectively. Like when I say, “X band sucks!” and someone says “that’s just your opinion man!” (as if I didn’t already know that) and I’d say, “of course it’s my opinion, we’re discussing music.” You’re right, but I usually don’t take time to clarify in matters like this, and that’s why. It may have been more accurate to qualify my statement; but by that measure, it would be more accurate if every reviewer of a thing qualified all of his or her statements too, which I think might make things a bit more ponderous in general.
I may end up maybe getting more people’s Rangeeli after all (that is, if they want to give it up and if I’ve got something they want back in exchange, figure out how, have baggies or something etc anyway) after all… after this conversation and thinking about it more, I went ahead and diluted some Rangeeli down with some leftover dried and ground up Taxi (another mistake of mine) and some ‘toasted’ (previously 80 second microwaved N Rustica which really did give it a slight toasted smell), and this way its quite nice and very do-able for me.
@whistlrr I would be willing to make trade if it is feasible. If I recall you have some Kamal which you do not care much for.
This one is easy: Chief Bull Nasty plastic fruit (cherry i think) scent
nah chief bull is fruit as in no known fruit.
i think you re right
I remember reading a discription of it that said fruit. I thought what fruit is that tried it realized there isn’t a specfic or real fruit this smells like. Though oddly I like that snuff a bit.
I really did not like Sun Snuff Rangeeli. I also did not like WoS French Carrote. I also did not like QWS Jasmin. And I did not like Temptation(I think) Minty Vanilla, mostly because it had zero mint to it.
I may have two more converts from smoking to the idea of snuff on the way (two more medical people in fact)… and was showing off my worldwide collections (“here’s my south african snuffs” “here’s my British snuff” “here’s some American snuff” and having them smell over it) when we got to “here’s my Indian snuff” I showed them a few dholakias (by showing I mean opening each tin and letting them have a smell… we were all standing and leaving an appointment and there was three of them the two ladies who smoke and my doctor who incidentally is Indian so I couldn’t really get them to take sniffs but my doctor was most interested in all, even saying to them “try it!” – next time now that I know they are smokers I will be ready, and will try to have them sniff). I have twice now had the situation where I discover somebody’s a smoker looking to quit (the other was a nurse from a home help agency separate from my doctor’s office and his lady helpers) and finding at first introduction its worked best to let people smell over them and demonstrate and give them an idea of how snuff works… then the next time I see them encouraging an actual sniff (though my nurse/friend kept on snorting even after I told him four times and demonstrated to SNIFF not snort!) they seemed most impressed with the smell of Rangeeli (seriously)… granted that might be because it was in contrast to the smell of things I had just had them smell before, the South Africans (like a fresh can of NTSU, Babaton Blue etc which as we know have a strong ammonia scent), but still… I have also now twice seen people from India (the other was a physical therapist) just kind of 'light right up" their faces kind of perk up and a big smile when I show them these things from India with their Indian names etc on them. I know this is way off topic but its about Rangeeli etc and something that happened today and this seemed as good a place as any to share it okay, I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussoin
I’ve only tried about 8 kinds–so far the weakest has been Gawith’s “Whisky”, which doesn’t smell like whisky at all. I hated “English Rose” at first, but it grew on me a little. Especially when I’m listening to long speeches in the House of Lords. Overall as a Canadian I’m probably not British enough for most of the flowery ones [obvious overgeneralization]. I suspect that liking snuffs like “French Carotte” requires one to like the smell of a perfume department, whereas I try to bolt through the perfume department as quickly as possible.
I have about 20 different snuffs in and around my desk. The one I dislike the most has got to be Poschl - Schmalzler Sudfrucht! Thats right, the banana bomb is just too overbearingly sweet and heavy for me to enjoy. I tried mixing it with some Molens Latakia, thinking the smokiness might turn it into something I could enjoy more but no…it came out just as bad or worse…lol. I ordered some F&T Macouba before I came to learn that I am not a fan of perfumed snuffs and so thats probably #2 disliked snuff I own. I’m sure some people probably love these so as somebody else mentioned previously: to each, their own.
Keep the Macouba, give it some time. I gagged with QWS Jasmine the first time, and gave it another shot few months later and I took it with me that evening.
I’ve given a away some snuffs I didn’t care much for, and I’ve changed my mind (for better and for worse) on few, but the WORST snuff I have ever tried is Dholakia Black.
probably said this packards club. It’s one of two snuff that the scent makes them unsnuffable. Packards wins out because I can’t see how anyone would dig it.
Anything medicated doesn’t go down well with me; the menthol just overwhelms any other flavor in the snuff. SG Peach was by far the least pleasant snuff I’ve ever tried. But I can’t figure where you guys are unhappy with McC Clove, which is my one always go-to snuff! What a wonderful creation. And Toque Whisky & Honey was an immediate restock for me, I’d never want to be without that. And I really enjoy French Carotte once in a while too, though it’s very perfumey. Sometimes that’s just what I’m looking for. There have been very few snuffs that I find totally without merit. But there have been a few!
I love that so many people are on this list. Back when it started it seemed like there was much more consensus about what snuffs are great and what ones suck then there is now. Back then if you went by what people said and thought snuff house was representative of the whole of snuffdom, there would be some snuffs that you’d think why do they even make that.
5 Photo Special is a snuff that I just can’t enjoy at the moment. It smells like burning plastic and gives me a headache half the time.
Toque Cheese and Bacon is the only snuff I’ve tried that really doesn’t agree with me
Temptation Concord Grape was one I couldn’t deal with–reminded me of my magic- marker sniffing days. I’ve never had a bad plain type of snuff so I lean towards them.
F&T French Carotte is pretty bad, too much makes me feel sick. The other I really havent liked was GH Mitchells, I can’t quite remember but I think its clove, I just remember it made me retch…
So far I cant stand Toque SP extra. Dont like the perfume smell. My first SP and I guess I dont like em.
W.E. Garrett Scotch… Dry as a desert and smelled rather bad… Just difficult to take.
McC Clove!
@snuffnpuff: What perfume? Also I would not judge all SPs on one, especially the youngest one on the market.
WOS crumbs of comfort definitely, other than that toque absinthe seemed to turn on me midway through the can, I don’t particularly care for toque champagne either but one out roughly 20 cans you don’t like is pretty good.
Mine would have to be Bon-Bon. I felt like putting on a dress afterwards.
What I dislike most about the American scotches is the super fine grind, it makes it hard for me, I really prefer a medium grind and moisture. Snuffs I recall not liking at all was WoS French Carrote, and QWS Sandalwood. It’s been a long while since I had those. I also didn’t care for Royal George. But tastes change, so if I did them today, I might think differently.
Hmm. My least favorite snuff would have to be almost all Poschl. I hate menthol unless I’m sick. Then I MIGHT do some ozona or something. IMHO all menthols seem the same to me. The only menthol I’ve ever been able to stand is possibly a snuff that has just a BIT of menthol just to compliment the flavor such as S.G. Raspberry (which is only satisfactory snuff but it works well when you’re congested.) But even then it just plain ruins it for me. Once again- unless I’m sick. The non-menthol yucky snuff IMO would have to be… I dunno I don’t really like alot of the “floral” snuffs. See I can’t say I’ve ever really HATED any snuff because I make it a point not to try any that I think would be disgusting. I do ALOT of research before I spend any money on snuff, regardless of cheap a hobby it might be.
@transistor If you like floral and and can stand menthol as a flavor enhancer I highly recommend Dholakia Manjul…it’s got the best of everything!! My least favorite would havy to be Navy Sweet…it’s like snuffing pure sugar to me.
I don’t think Manjul has menthol, I think it’s a hint of mint in it.
@Tom502 That would explain why it’s such a light mintyness…thanks!! OT here but have you tried the Dholakia Medicated…and any thoughts?
@rdunnion: Very good! Thats why the original recipe stated: A snuff also for ladies! Jaap Bes.
I think the Dholakia medicated is pretty good, but I think Blast Strong Menthol, and Fubar Medic are both better, and also made by Dholakia.
I think with the americans scotchs if it’s not your cup of tea you probably already know before trying it out.
@Tom502 Thanks for the info…I’ve got some medicated on the way, but I’ll definitely have to try the Blast and FUBAR!!
kjoerup: “The worst snuff I ever bought was FUBAR Shot of Rum. Overpowering artificial rum flavor; dry, sand-like consistency. Pure crap. I will never buy any FUBAR snuff again.” I want to second that. 100% true.
GH Strawberry has no redeeming features whatsoever. Horrible.
Nachman: “Gletscher Prise gets my vote for worst. The only German snuff I have ever bought.” Sorry, but wh… th. fu… ?? I mean, ok, i see that many people here seems to dislike Gletscherprise (for what reason ever, i cant understand) and that it is personal taste in the end - i mean, that is nothing we should talk about BUT why the hell you never again gave german snuff a try ?? Means that, that you never had the pleasure to sample some Schmalzer ?? Not to forget all the good stuff Bernhard produces… i cant believe it.
toffeenose: “GH Strawberry has no redeeming features whatsoever. Horrible.” I want to second that too - i took around 10 pinches and then never touched the tin again. It does not work for me. Same goes for WOW American Caramel and ROCKIT Cherry Pop - with both of them, it is the same as with the FUBAR Shot of rum. None of them works for me and know what, all are produced by Dholakia.
I have come to the conclusion that my nose just does not like menthol. I do, I like the freshness of it, but 2 minutes after I have any im completely blocked up. O&G, any Wilsons menthol, Lowen-Prise, anything, I can’t hack it. Ah well, I love my toasts and spices, so never mind!!
High Dry Toast by Fribourg & Treyer is my least favorite snuff. I keep it displayed in an English sterling snuff box hallmarked for 1936, the year that Edward VIII abdicated; I think the irony speaks for itself!
Prismaster:“Means that, that you never had the pleasure to sample some Schmalzer ??” That is an old, old post. I have since relented on the German snuffs and found that not all of them are like pushing mentholated candle shavings up your nose. I now use 25 to 50 grams of schmalzler a month.
Without doubt the worse snuff i’ve experienced is magnet Peach, closely followed by Royal George. The recently reincarnated F&B Pachouli is heading down that road as well (smells like Harpic).
I’m not a fan of Garrett sweet
Dholakia Fruit Cake was revolting, to me.
Manjul is definately spearmint! I found that I really like that, and I’m a non-medicated man for sure. In fact, all I could put on my ‘don’t-snuff!’ list would be medicated snuffs. The menthol totally overpowers any other scent the snuff might have for me.
I hate the glacier pinch. Not cause I don’t like the smell. Love the smell actualy. I have wondered if there is cement in that snuff with the way it blocks my nose. GH strawberry is awesome in my opinion. I love the way the oddly perfumy scent slowly tapers off revealing an interestingly complex strawberry perfume smell. I think it’s great. I can’t imagine Fruit cake anything being good.
I haven’t had a snuff yet that I totally hate, but i definitely will never again purchase any Gawith Apricot again…on purpose anyway!! You know how that drunken order placement goes! =)
@bob: sounds like you would like Polar Prise. Its everything that Glestcherprise should be.
@Nachman: Now that i know, that you are already aware of the pleasure Schmalzer´s hold, i am somehow relieved.
WoS Royal George… like snuffin’ talcum powder.
I remember not liking Royal George but would be up to giving it another try. For some reason I have had a hankering for it lately.
Chief Bull. Horrible stuff IMHO.
we garrett sweet and mild, way too sweet.
I do like polar prise and it doesn’t clog me up. Not seriously. I mean menthols give me rebound sometimes but not mouth breathing levels of rebound. Glacier pinch makes me nose close right up.
Without doubt the worst snuff I’ve ever tasted was SG Peach. Holy crap, that stuff was just plain awful. How it ever got into production is beyond my reasoning. But that’s just me I guess. Even so: YUCK.
My least favourite snuff would definately have to be toque espresso. The texture and consistency was like sand and I could not smell any esspresso. I think it may just have been old. Actually come to nthink of it it didnt reek like ammonia when i got it.
No specific brand but i absolutely hate any that smell like perfume, flowers, lavender, etc, etc. So far the one i have found to like the best is Toque Quit,to me it’s just good, strong and doesn’t have any over powering girly smell to it.
buffalo 3:51PM Permalink No specific brand but i absolutely hate any that smell like perfume, flowers, lavender, etc, etc. So far the one i have found to like the best is Toque Quit,to me it’s just good, strong and doesn’t have any over powering girly smell to it. amen to that brother
For me it was Hedges it was like burnt rubber
This may get me excommunicated for impiety but the worst snuff I have tried so far is F&T Old Paris - it was indescribably dreadful, and second to that was the Princes - I might have just as well have filled my snuff box from the potting shed. I really seem to be out of step, judging by the reviews on here and elsewhere, unless of course people only post reviews about snuffs they like and I am part of a “silent majority”?. Tremulously awaiting the arrival of the inquisition (!)
Stone him! That man blasphemeth! Just kidding. That is why there are so many kinds of snuffs. A lid for every pot.
Well you gotta switch your pic now. Cause that pick says I love old paris. I’am kidding of course, no I’am not.
@Bob - Although it is alleged (in italics) by F&T that The Beau approved of OP, I cannot imagine him imperilling his linen with such a coarse loose snuff! Conversely, it might have been the constant use of OP that caused his haughty and imperious manner - almost as though he had an unpleasant smell in his nose.
Hmmm OP and princes is on my must try list…hope I like it
@GOHAWKS - I wish you joy of your snuff - I am the one out of step here!
Mr Snuff kindly sent me a sachet of 6 Photo K (I believe that’s what it is). First sniff I got a major hit of joss stick/incense and some menthol. Other, finer, scents are there too. I’ve lived in the far east and this was an instant taste of India. Problem is that the scent lingers long and nothing of a more subbtle nature can be appreciated for a while after. I’m glad I’ve tried it and it saves the air fare on a trip to india. But this is not what I’m looking for in a snuff. Even so, quite pleasurable and with a lift.
6 Photo K, I am guessing that would be their Kailesh. Very nice, and similar to Himalaya.
wost snuff see my post about walnut snuff re german snuff yuk yuk
Wilsons Crumbs Of Comfort…Arrrrr.
I loved crumbs of comfort extra at first but quickly got burnt out on it
Something about this Toque SP Extra that is not sitting right with me.
Id say out of my collection Gletscher Prise is my least favorite. Its not so much the flavor its the water effect it has on my nose.
F&T Seville really didn’t work for me.
I just had my first pinch of Toque Raspberry Menthol today and I’m not really digging it at the moment. Let’s see if it grows on me.
I second the dislike for Seville. I actually threw out my GH Sea Breezes as to me it smells exactly like Comet abrasive cleaner. I like the smell of Comet (I used it as a kid to clean sinks for my mother), but as a snuff it’s just plain wrong. For me.
one snuff i am realy not keen on is schnupftabak klostermischung, it is far too sticky and smells like gewy moldy raisens. it also makes the run out of your nose really gloopy. generaly not an amazing snuff :S
Ive never been able to take Cafe Royal without getting the immediate effects of a heavy cold and a sore throat.
Gletscher Prise is just so overwhelmingly “artificial”; Don’t get on with the spearmint varieties; I also find the J&HW SP No1 stingingly, eyewateringly uncomfortable [since this was the first snuff I ever tried, way back in the 1970s, I am still amazed that I carried-on! Must have been the influence and extreme good taste of the proprietor of the first “proper” snuff tobacconist I ever visited, a year or so later - the inestimable Vivian Rose, erstwhile of G Smith & Sons…] But please - don’t knock F&T Carotte - I find, some mornings, it does for the nose what a good-quality aftershave can do for the face - by way of smooth and uplifting as well as a pleasant aroma!
so far my least enjoyed have been Pöschl Gawith Apricot and 6 Photo Special. Way too much menthol, and there is a component in Special that I can’t identify but is abhorrent to me.
Rooster, Maybe I got an old batch, ( no for sale in U.S. label) but it tastes like Ga. red clay dust!!! I use it to nic up my RYO cigs!!!
I have a difficult time liking Kamal, remarkably similar to baby powder in scent and texture. French Carotte on the other hand I find delightful.
The worst one I have tried is (oddly enough) SG Apple. Poschl Doppelaroma D is a VERY close second though.
bernards amostrina or whatever its called
Pretty much anything Poschl, save the Schimitars(SP), i find artifical and “headachey”.
@JPSKS I just finished a 10g of amostrinha yesterday and I like it. Its basically straight camphor, which makes it stand out from its menthol cousins.
What I like about this thread is that almost everyone has their own dislikes.
For me, the two G&Hs are the worst of my snuffs. But after reviewing their prices, they are budget snuffs, so I guess you get what you get. Other than that, I have 550g of spearmint snuffs, and I have no idea what to do with them. I tried mixing a little, and it just destroys anything it touches. Id have to retally, but Im at around 6kilos of snuff, and I would really have to go through everything again. I have found that I love tap boxes, and so each time a finish one I fill it with a tinned snuff.
Love most all SP’s and quite a lot of menthol’s, peppermints, KB’s, florals, toasts…
dislike anything with a discernable hit of musk (F&T bordeaux, Macouba… I’m looking at you)
Like F&T’s Old Paris, Santo Domingo, HTD…
Like most all S.African offerings so far…
Dislike most anything spearmint…
Strongly dislike anything manurey (Dholakia Black, D. Medicated)
Dislike many Poschls, probably because they irritate my passages- but Bernards don’t cause that problem much, go figure.
Also like F&T French Carotte, but disklike WoS French Carotte
What a lovely expression of subjectivity we’ve got going here
6 Photo Cheeta because of that perfume-y smell.
I don’t mind SP’s here and there (mainly Toque Original or SP extra) but both WoS Strasbourg and IHT #20 I can’t stand. Smells like taking a bit ol whiff of either Mr. Clean or similar cleaning product.
Toque Menthol
always get a stuffy nose from it.
neftobak
Without doubt for me it was Wilsons Of Shallow’s Best Dark and i only buy Wilsons Snuff now but the Best Dark was a Best Nothing for me i found it had nothing going for it
My two main ones are Ice Liquorice and Jockey Club
But like other people i often order a small tin to try others but Best Dark will never reach my nose again
Still Toque Cheese & Bacon is the worst for me. FUBAR Shot of Rum is pretty nasty, Sun Rangeeli is just plain gross and Dholakia Black is like sticking your face in a cowpie, they should rename it Dholakia Cowpie.
Dholakia non tobacco herbal snuff .The scent reminds me of the dying old ladies with bed sore medication ointment . Exactly the same scent.
Funny how scents can trigger vivid memories of the past. Suddenly I am 14 mopping the hallways of the nursing home.Making big money $1.25 an hour and chasing nurses aids.Smoking pall mall, lucky strike, chesterfields and old gold cigarettes.

I could have written that but change nursing home for restaurant and church and add Camels and Home Run. What is it with teens wanting the strongest cigs possible; Old Gold Straights with the pseudo cork tip were a favorite too.
I don’t think I have had the worse yet but there are several that I will leave on the shelves for others.
Most menthols, WoS Grand Cairo, F&T Bordeaux and a few others
packards club is the only snuff that I won’t snuff ever. I could be out of snuff and it could be the only available and I’d say no. Which no other snuff I’ve ever tried is so horrible to my nose. Though if you have not ever tried that horrid snuff you really really should because it’s very one of a kind and the people that do like it love it.
Poschl Radfords Snuff 25g … Not to be confused with Poschl Radfords Premium which is amazing and If you claim to not enjoy Poschl snuff but still havn’t tried Radfords Premium, try it.
Taxi Red - entirely too course and smells of fecal matter.
Wilsons Raspberry - Horrible chemical scent to it, sneeziest of all snuffs for me.
Which is amazing because to me the wilsons raspberry doesn’t smell chmicaly at all or make me sneeze.
Royal George at first is quite a nice sweet nutmeg smell, but the longer it stays in your nose the more it smells like burnt plastic. Toque Cherry, the cherry is overpowered by a awful grassy stench.
i like 25g radford. It seems to me like redbull but a lot more affordable.
royal george smells like the pucks they put in urnals in the bathroom
I found that 25g radford is nothing like redbull, i kept my redbull and gave away my radford
For me brunswick and princes and most SPs are too soapy.
Dean Swift Raspberry - horrible menthol/cheap raspberry combination and way overpriced to boot.
Buttercup
The white, non-tobacco Poschl snuff. I really begrudge the 20 seconds of my life that I gave to that garbage. 30 years later I still wake up in the night shouting ‘Why???’
There are a lot of snuffs I’m not particularly fond of but only one I’ve tried so far I absolutely can’t stand. That is super chetak . I don’t mind the barnyard aroma in the background of south African snuffs, but this one just reeks of dung with incense. If you were a homesick Indian I can understand liking it but to me it is just repulsive. I’ve tried mixing it with other snuffs but it overpowered and wrecked those. I know other people like it but that really amazes me.
A friend brought some WOS Apple & Blackcurrant around to my house last night, and I think that would have to be fairly close to the worst snuff I have tried.
taxi blue and fubar grunt …well Toque peach too. . heard that fubar grunt batches varies a lot so perhaps I just had some bad luck with that one … but there is enough war enthusiasm going on so it feels totally dum to have militaristic snuff! “gringo war snuff” made in India!? just bad idea at the first place?
For me, F&T Seville was like whiffing great-aunt Nancy’s under-washed, over-perfumed neck folds as she gives me a bear hug. I had to throw it out.
Honourable mention goes to SG KB Special. It was as if they emptied the dregs of a charcoal bag into the tap box. I have since found out that the tap box probably didn’t do the snuff any favours but I doubt I’ll buy a tin of it in the future.
temptation / mango cream ,a nasty aspect of snuff…
(and I like mango)
I’m not a fan of any menthols really, so probably those.
Slightly off topic but I did try Absolut Snus though as a change to snuff, what on earth is that stuff? It makes even my bad snuffs seem like powdered gold. Don’t worry I didn’t try sticking it up my nose
Toque Apricot which would be excellent if it were tart instead of so sweet.
I can’t say I’ve tried anything I found to be awful at all, I’m not a big fan of the toque apricot either I find is a bit sickly sweet for me but is in no way a bad snuff just not to my taste. I found the Viking peach to be a bit lacking in peach. Just a slightly sweeter dark
I bought a Brazilian Snuff (or ‘rapé’) who answer by the name of Guarany Eucalyptus. That is the worst thing I have ever tried…it looks like you drank a bootle of bathroom disinfecting stuff…
All Menthol from india .
Just tried Jockey Club. Whew! Like sticking a mini bar of hotel soap up your nose.
@BigNose Whose version? The Wilsons of Sharrow one is lovely. The Gawith one is horrid! (In my opinion, of course…)

I had the normal stuff, was like ground burnt gingercake. In a bad way.

Sorry Mate, but it was WoS version. But hey, I’m new and ignorant to the world of snuff so if they are anything like pipe tobacco’s then i’m likely to change my mind on some of them over time.
It’s just the jockey smells of soap and hangs around a long time (most unlike any real jockey i have ever met!).
I can’t argue with the description! Don’t think there’s a right or wrong about it, though - just different tastes. If you shop with Mr. Snuff, you might try some Bernard Gekachelter Virginie with your next order. It’s absolutely dead plain Virginia tobacco, and the smell reminds me a bit of Players Navy Cut.
I’m usually an aniseed fan but Wilsons of Sharrow Aniseed Extra made me repeatedly sick for half an hour afterwards. Many people love it, but personally I think it’s vile!

Yes definitely, each to their own as you say. I have recently fallen in love with Schmalzer’s from Poschl and Bernard (bought from Mr Snuff most excellant website) and yet initially i was quite dubious of the style. Never say never, i say, and give it a chance.
I have been working my way down Bernards list to the Virginie so i look forwards to trying it. It’s so true about Schmalzer’s that once you start you can’t stop. I’ve limited myself to not starting before 7pm otherwise it get totally out of control.
The only snuffs I hated at first sniff are SG Carnation and GH Sea Breezes…if I wanted a rancid oyster in my nose, I’ll go down to the beach and get one. I don’t much care for the fruit flavors I’ve tried, they’re alright for the occasional sniff, but not as an all-day snuff. I like snuffs with Latakia tobac, but Latakia doesn’t like me, it seems I’m somewhat allergic to something in the smoke cure. I had to quit taking Elmos Reserve, I like it but I don’t like sneezing violently for 15 minutes at a stretch after taking it. Mind you, I’m not sorry I bought them. Worth the experience even if I don’t much care for them…except for the Sea Breezes. That was beyond bad.
lmao! A rancid oyster! I just did a pinch of sea breezes and it was lovely
Ever since the first day I tried WoS Jockey Club I could place the scent exactly. To me it smells exactly like the old Gillette shaving foam. It reminds me of way back when I would play with shaving cream. when I was a kid the teachers would bring in a can and let us play on the desks with it.
To get back to the subject, at first I wasn’t partial to it but I love it now though it is very strong and will over power anything else plus im still on my first tin. All the snuff I havent liked at first I now loathe for their depth. Iv learned some times only time will tell if you like it.
I feel like the title can be taken the wrong way, it should be opinions on odd snuffs or least used snuffs in your cellar.
I like Menthol snuff but unfortunately Menthol snuff doesn’t like me, every time I take a pinch from Toque Menthol my nose runs or the opposite, become clogged… so I know now that in my future orders I will not get any kind of menthol snuff… on the other hand Ozona President (Eucalyptus Oil) is OK and so is Dholakia Sparrow Cool … and I did not try many varieties yet to dislike special kinds.
Taxi Red - entirely too course and smells of fecal matter.
Wilsons Raspberry - Horrible chemical scent to it, sneeziest of all snuffs for me.
I love TAXI Extra Strong.
Ummm…fecal matter…
I think the worst I have tried is still Dholakia Kamal.
Preach it BB
The worst I’ve tried so far is WoS Best Dark. De gustibus non disputandum est…
I have,'t had one yet that I outright hated, but Golden Pinch is definitely pretty far down on my list.
Pretty much any American Scotch.
WoS Whiskey, it smells rather ‘rubbery’ and unpleasant to me.
So far I have tried over 30 snuffs and I can say with certainty that so far there is none that is really unpleasant.
The only thing I find close to me not liking is Kendal Scotch Black and that is only because of the texture.
It is really moist and boogers up into little clay like balls when I pinch it.
The smell is fantastic but it is real hard to take and it falls out a lot.
On a side note, I just got Bernard Virginie 50g and it is very, very close to the Scotch Black and the moisture and texture of this snuff is close to perfect.
What I don’t like are menthol, camphor, or eucalyptus–“medicated” snuffs. What I dislike most is buying a snuff only to get it and find it is medicated. It’s a shame snuffs aren’t labeled to denote the presence of menthol.
With this in mind, I have a question to other group members: I’ve been using nasal snuff for a little over a year and love the stuff. The one general category of snuffs I haven’t tried are the schmalzlers and I would like to change this. I’m looking at the Poschl line and noticed several schmalzlers. Since most Poschl snuffs do contain menthol, it’s fair to ask if any of the schmalzlers do. Do they?
Roderick, I’m not putting down menthol snuff users at all. It’s just a matter of me not liking them. It’s the same with your Toque products. There are some I don’t at all care for, but they are all masterfully done. In fact, for everyday use, your snuffs are the best–at least in my opinion. To wax philosophical for a moment, I think one of the biggest mistakes we can make is to assume everybody is just like I am. I say to each their own.
Or did you respond to the wrong post?
@Dunnyveg No schmalzler contains menthol. The 4 Pöschl schmalzlers are menthol free. As far as I know everything else currently made by Pöschl is mentholated. Halb-shmalzlers can contain menthol, since they are schmalzlers mixed with regular snuff.
Xander, thank you for your help.
Roderick, after a further moment to reflect on your post to me, I’ve never known you not to label the menthol in your snuffs. My comments were not directed to you. An example of what I’m talking about is Wilson’s of Sharrow’s raspberry snuff, which is loaded with menthol and is not noted anywhere on the label.
I’m really not that picky; menthol simply tears my nose and sinuses up. So, if I inadvertently buy a mentholated snuff, I’ve thrown my money away. Again, I don’t care if snuffs contain menthol; I just want to know so I can personally avoid those products.
@Dunnyveg I find the Bernard Schmalzlerfranzl Brasil to be excellent, and by the way NO menthol.
I agree with you that though I love menthol, it most certainly does NOT love me back.
@stogie, I appreciate your help on the schmalzers. It’s something I look forward to trying.
One more question since you have tried them: Do Schmalzlers have a tendency to inflame the sinuses the way some coarse snuffs do, or do they tend to stay in the lower nose?
Pretty much any American Scotch.
That is NOT nice !!! XD
I can hardly consider myself an expert but I have not had inflammation troubles. They are moist and once in place tend to stay. Larger particle size helps too.
@stogie, if you don’t have the sinusitis that goes with inhalant allergies, consider yourself fortunate. I will say I’m coming to the conclusion that snuff can actually help allergies since allergies tend to dry out nasal membranes (at least for me) while snuff gets them running like nobody’s business. Snuff is a catalyst for a kind of natural nose rinse.
@Roderick, the “kind words” are well deserved. Keep up the good work!
The worst snuff I have ever tried is WoS Blackberry and rum (I think it was called that) which seemed to be flavoured with a vomit and Ribena sauce.
snuffster, I agree with that, I didn’t get either of the flavors as anticipated. But I do like most all of thier others so far.
Yep, WoS snuffs are the real deal and whilst I only use a couple of theirs on a regular basis (mostly in home blends) I have tried just about all of their catalogue. I tend to like the ones that have been around for centuries, I think their newer snuffs are aimed at the slice of the market that Dholakia dominates with their candy snuffs. Old Mr Wilson must be at several thousand RPM over things like ‘bubblegum’. It doesn’t suit them. IMHO.

I think it’s good that Wilsons have the old school snuffs they’ve always had, yet still quite often expand their range with new kinds as well… they have something to appeal to all/most snuffers really. So they manage to be historical but also modern. Although I mentioned their Whiskey as my least favourite snuff, they also have some that are among my favourites.
I’ll try most anything new in the snuff world that sounds good. I think the world needs WoS’s SP’s, SM’s, Royal George…but it’s probably good that they’re willing to take some risks- I bet there will be couple of new winners every now and then.
I steer clear from anything with spearmint or aniseed in it as I just don’t like those flavours, but my least favourite snuff would have to be Blast Wine and Cheese. Buckfast with the lingering scent of athletes foot? I’ll pass…
Samuel Gawith peach. Picked a 10g tin up from La Brea Pipe & Cigar in Los Angeles. This was a couple weeks ago, so it’d definitely been on the shelf a while… But just awful. Smelled like soap and nutra-sweet. Maybe it was the age of the snuff, but it’s probably the only snuff I’ve had that I truly didn’t like. Reluctant to try any other flavors from Gawith.
SG Cherry edit: oops, wrong thread, I like this snuff and should have posted in the what’s in your nose.

tap boxes are a no go. Never get anything english in a tap box. They dry out and age and get nasty so fast. Seriously I don’t know why they still sell anything in them.
The tap boxes are very convenient but stale snuff seem to be the end result. I am sure if the makers took the step to individually shrink wrap each container that would solve the problem.
Worst for me are QWS Sandalwood and Jasmin. I have tried Sandalwood twice and both times it seemed stale or old. I have decided both sandalwood and Jasmin are not to my taste.
@citra47 Don’t rule them out based on that. I don’t care for the QWS ones either, but Wilson’s does a good job with both those flavors.
Any type of Toast for me…
WoS Best Dark has been displaced by FUBAR Grunt. Exponentially more cloying than anything I’ve ever tried.
I don’t use Grunt on it’s own but as a mixer it comes into its own - at the moment I’m using half and half with a plain rustica flour.
It’s funny how things change. I hated FUBAR SoR, now I can’t live without it. I thought Toque Absinthe was wretched, but now I love it. The only ones I don’t like these days are Schmalzers and Super Kalish. The Schmalzers are just too moist for me, and Super Kalish reeks bad, and for a long, long time. I’m still love/hate with Cheese 'n Bacon. It calls to me…and yet…the cheese linger…
Dholakia Black. Sun Rangeeli and Rasili are close runners up, along with Venter’s Medicated. No scratch that, Venter’s Medicated is nowhere as hideous as the others…
I agree about the Wilson’s Raspberry. No, I don’t hate it, but the menthol kick is damn near ridiculous. I hear it even frightens Germans who are accustomed to menthol. Seriously. The raspberry flavor is delicious, but that menthol burns, burns, burns. And, it turns my nostrils into waterfalls. Still, I keep a snuffbox next to my bed, and it’s often my first snuff of the day, particularly if I awake with a stuffy nose. Sorry to Vikas, but the Kailash is pretty bad. I was hoping it would reek less with some aging, but so far, it still smells fecal to me. Everything else I’ve tried from 6 Photo, I’ve enjoyed. Dholakia White is perhaps the one I hate the most. Dead sardines, nose burn, too finely ground and a nicotine punch that nauseates me. Yep, definitely Dholakia White, follwed closely by Kailash. But let’s think warm, fauzzy thoughts about the ones we love. BTW, I have a couple 6 gram envelopes (freebies from MS) that I’ll let go *real* cheap. LOL
WoS Brunswick. It’s like putting a soapy piece of wet leather (spritzed with dimestore cologne) in your nose!
F&T except Princes(Special) and HDT
@Prismaster – What can I say? I get the distinct impression that American Scotchs were primarily made for oral use and they just don’t agree with my nose. They do wonders for my sinuses tho!
Any GH or SG in a tap box. I’ve never had one that wasn’t dry as saw dust. I’m also not a fan of scotches except conwood peach. It always feels like it’s gumming up my nasal cavity in a strange way…
@howdydave I understand your point. Any nose is different anyway. My favorite for the nose is RED SEAL. It goes well with beer and i like the taste of the throat drip. Cannot go wrong with it.
^ my favorite American at anyrate.
My least favorite so far is Wilsons Burgundy. It is growing on me but will probly only take it a couple times a month.
You have to hand it to Pöschl that they’ve kept the snuff trade on the continent alive almost single handedly. Apart from (or rather because of) that, most people are introduced to snuff taking by Pöschl. I’m not a big fan of their products, but they do have some decent offerings. McCraig Royal, the first snuff I ever tried, springs to mind (unfortunately it’s unavailable in the Netherlands, but I stock up on it whenever I’m in Germany), as well as Ozona President and Löwenprise. It’s been 23 years or so since I last tried Gawith Apricot, but I seem to remember it wasn’t too bad. However, in Pöschl’s sweeter snuff repertoire, things go horribly wrong. Glück Auf Prise is the worst snuff I ever tried, hands down. When I ordered it I was expecting something spicy (clove, cinnamon, menthol etc., along the lines of Samuel Gawith’s CCC) but it turned out to be sickeningly sweet, with a very artificial fruity aroma. After a couple of pinches I concluded it really didn’t work for me, to the point of making me physically sick. Worse still, it stank up the drawer in which I keep my snuff tins. Upon returning home the morning after I received the package, the faint smell of Glück Auf had pervaded the entire living room. For fear of contaminating my entire snuff stash (and because I really hated the stuff) I ended up chucking my 30 grams of Glück Auf in the waste container, something I’ve never done to any snuff, before or since. It’s horrible and it put me off fruity snuffs (save the odd lemon) altogether. WoS Royal George comes in second, but that’s because I don’t like marzipan too much. A personal thing, I guess, still it’s a quality snuff, which I can’t say about Glück Auf. I don’t like WoS Kendal Brown, either, not because it’s a bad snuff in itself, but because it’s anything but Kendal Brown.
QWS Sandalwood. The blurb says “The base snuff is flavored with pure organic sandalwood essential oil.” But I have never smelt any Sandalwood essential oil that smells like that snuff - organic or otherwise. What I get is a very artificial plastic aroma. It may be coming from the bullet rather than the snuff but it was so bad that I have not even bothered to open the spare container that came in the pack to check it. I believe that @Roderick mentioned somewhere that if you overloaded snuff with essential oils then the resulting aroma changes from pleasant to artificial so it could be that. The only reason that I have not thrown it out is that some kind soul here mentioned that Sandalwood works as a fixative for other scents so I am saving it for mixing purposes in the future.
It’s funny how different preferences can be. QWS Sandalwood is one of my favorites. Cheese and Bacon though. *shiver*
Yeah, to me the QWS Sandalwood (at least if ignoring the scent of the base tobacco)is the snuff that smells most like the real Indian sandalwood oil that I had bought in the 90’s. I’ve heard the Australian variety is…idk… lighter/less musky. My experience is that the WoS sandalwood, while pleasant, has less of the aroma and more resembles sandalwood chips that have aired out a bit- a drier scent to me. But like what ya like…
I wonder if it is the flavor itself or the brand quality for example some people don’t like a particular flavors whereas for other person that is favorite!
@Michaeliverpool An interesting question. I do like the aroma of Sandalwood based on the essential oils and other products I have used. But I have never smelt the Indian oil that @Mr_O mentions so it might be rather different. QWS is produced in India and they would use the locally produced oils so that might be the answer. I will check out the WoS and / or GH Sandalwoods on my next order so I am certainly not giving up on the aroma / flavour.
I’d have to make QWS Sandalwood my worst or one of my worst as well. I like other companies’ sandalwoods, so its not a dislike of the flavor for me.
Dholakia Herbal Snuff- The snuff is Ok the scent makes me hurl chunks. I enjoy the rest of their line and their side brands.
love the qws sandalwood. It’s the most like the actual wood I’ve smelled it actualy has woody undertones that are just incredible to me. Ah you probably like packards club. Though my new worst is almost great but it’s got agreen grass subnote that kills it for me. I’am actuly not going tomention the snuff because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else. That great smell leading to gross smell is worse for me then a snuff that is bad.
bob- I’m glad I’m not totally alone with the QWS sandal… I do wish the WoS would up the dose of the oil, (IMO) it’s pretty good, but it could be really good with more oomph.
So far the menthol/eucalyptus scent from the Poschl’s that I have just don’t agree with me at all. Not a menthol guy I guess.
I’d say try some of the menthols from Wilson’s of Sharrow, to me much different than the Poschl’s. Whether it be offerings like Vanilla Ice, Cherry Menthol, Apricot Menthol- or more straight medicateds like SM, SM 500, SM Brown…I’d say they’re worth a shot, this is coming from someone who’s not crazy about most of the Poschl’s…a suggestion…
@Mr_O Will do, I’ve read a bit about the SM’s. I’ll throw one in my next order.
Yeah, maybe you’ll find a new fave or two. You folks can correct me if I’m wrong but: I think the SM is milder menthol-wise than the SM Brown, SM 500, SM Gold, and I think the Menthol Plus is more intense than those. Also the Super Menthol is like a mid range SM with the bergamot etc scenting like the SP’s… good luck and have fun!
McChrystals mild lemon isn’t much good. It came in a leaky tin (which is obviously a common problem as it was mailed to me in a little plastic bag). The consistency is like trail dust and it has very little aroma. My wife tried it and said it was like ‘tobacco flavoured dust’ which I agree with. Impossible to sniff without it hitting the back of my throat.
@AustinAllegro - If you are able to get the Mild Lemon without the container problems it is very good.
@AustinAllegro - If you are able to get the Mild Lemon without the container problems it is very good.
Slide - perhaps it’s a technique problem. I find it is so fine ground that before I even sniff it, it has gone up into the back of my throat. It reminds me of a wind whipping up in the Sahara!
Any 6 photo with menthol triggers my gag reflex.
@austinallegro If it came in one of those red tap boxes its worthless. No vendor has any business selling those. It should not be dry at all. I’ve gone through half a dozen round metal tins of it, all excellent.
Klostermischung. It just made me sick.
Pőschl Glacier Pinch [with or without Columbus Oil!]; WoS “Crumbs”, Royal George [sorry Wilsons, this stuff is migraine-juice to my nose!] - yet any of these may be a favourite to others. I also dislike the excess of both menthol and obviously artificial chemicals in many of the Pőschl blends.
The worst could be next best! It involves a lot of time to find a right taste. The most important thing is always hidden.
SG Apple from a tap box (was like sand and smelt like toilet cleaner!) Dohl White, its way too fine and smells vile, out of a tap box its even worse! Toque Quit it is not (which is epic IMO)!
so far it have to be the bacon and cheese … yeah for sure …
hedges menthol is WAY to much for me , as far as minty goes i only really seem to like Ozana President
Anything Poschl, save the Schmalzler’s, make me head-achey and sick to my stomach.
I have yet to try a snuff that I completely disdained, but I tend to shy away from floral scents and I’m not to fond of heavy fruit fragrances.
Never been a fan of anything that is over the top with perfume or floral; I don’t mind either one in moderation but there is a fine line.
Rockit! Ice- old socks and cat piss, inconsistent grind, super dry. Had me mouth breathing for half an hour.

If I had to name one it would be Royal George but it is not alone. There are quite a few Gawith Hogarth snuffs I find offensive. Also have a strong aversion to florals. Not keen on Poschls either except their schmalzlers of course.
SG dark lavender. Lavender is one of my favorite scents but this one had the consistency of roughly ground dry coffee. It was like a brick in the container and I had to break it up with a spoon. Probably because of the tap box it came in but it still scared me away. Maybe one day I might try to hydrate it and give it another go, but for now it’s hiding in a zip lock in the back of the drawer.
I received GH Jasmine as a part of a recent order. I don’t know how anybody does florals. It was like having an old lady living in my nose. It has actually beaten as C&B my least favorite. I have a bit of C&B every now and then because I love the smokiness just not the cheese linger. Unlike Jasmine, it does have at least one redeeming quality.
Only been at this a few weeks but SG Black Coffee is about the worst thing i have tried smells loke old sock and old grow bags i love coffee and i was looking forward to getting it and then 5 minutes after the postman had been the disappointment set in
I really don’t get on with Toque Almond Toast. It’s the only toast I’ve tried, but I think that rather than it being a bad toast (it has an excellent reputation on here) it’s a problem I would have with any toast. The smokey scent reminds me of unwashed clothes the day after a good bonfire!
I still haven’t found one that I truly dislike. I thought it was going to be Railroad Mills Sweet because it doesn’t have a strong anything but it turned out to be the best base for mixing
The only one so far I cannot stand is 6 photo super chetak. I triple bagged it and held on to it for a long time thinking my taste for this one might change. But after leaving it alone for a while I revisited this and still…my worst.
@distaind I had a sample of that one time. I thought it smelled like incense being used to cover extreme body odor. …nasty…
WoS Sunset
@jayson That’s quite a shame to hear, and I’ve always maintained that SG is shooting themselves in the foot with those tap boxes. They turn off new snuffers with them. The problem is intensified with the moist snuffs. Lavender Dark should be wet as mud. I have one here in a vac tin, that’s stayed moist even though it was opened a year ago. If I ever say don’t buy SG in tap boxes, I mean it 10 times over when it comes to the moist ones. The toasts are the only ones that sort of survive them.
Too bad @BeeMan, To me there is absolutely no other ‘coffee’ blend that truly tastes like coffee. Being a black coffee lover that lusts after fresh ground dark roasts, this is it. just goes to prove we are all different. Thank heavens there is a good variety of options out there huh!
The worst could be next best! It involves a lot of time to find a right taste. The most important thing is always hidden.
@Honza777 You are so right when it comes to that. I got my first tin of snuff a couple months ago, a teeny tiny tin of O and G. and I was instantly hooked. I made my next order from mister snuff but couldnt wait. I got some snuff sent to me from @Saucy_Jack and it was all veteran stuff. Scotches, Kendal Browns, Schmalzlers. I initially didnt like them too much. But now after trying so many more things, I have returned to the snuffs I originally hated.
espresso
At the moment it’s probably WoS Ice Liqourice. Unlike Hedges, which is to me just menthol and far too strong I really want to like Ice because of the liqourice flavouring, but the menthol kick is so intense it might as well be renamed Brain Freeze. I’ve tried mixing in most of a small tin of J&H Wilson SP No1 that I’ve had for so many years that it has no scent at all (I lost it in a drawer), but it still came back as powerful as ever. I swear the lid moves on it’s own from time to time, it’s that strong…
espresso
Espresso isn’t bad, just poorly named. Hint of Coffee would be more appropriate

Slight hint of coffee if you are in a wishful mood…

Lavender Dark is lovely when fresh.

It is my favorite floral, and I’m far from a fan of florals.

I’m the same - not a fan of florals, but Lavender Dark, I really like.
Bacon and Cheese Pretty much any snuff that purports to taste like food is on the top of my “stay away from” list.

I love toast and hate the almond toast it just is wrong in my nose. So don’t write off toasts please.
@Xander I have learned my lesson lol. You guys have inspired me to try again. Next order it’s going to be the vac tin though.
F&T princes special…spray perfume directly into the nose would be less worse!
Poschl Gletscherprise. I’m not a big menthol fan in the first place (though I’ve been known to take a pinch or two of CoC), but I really hated that stuff. It was just overwhelming menthol, no tobacco, and it clogged the hell out of my nose to boot. Also very weak. The only snuff tin I’ve thrown out unfinished.
Todays post has just arrived SG Black coffee that i tried last week that was in the 10g tap box that was not very nice at all smelt damp like an old sock. well today the 25g tin came fantastic the is no comparing the two the 10g tapbox has gone in the bin and i will never buy one of those plastic thing again the black coffe in the tin is a different class i love coffee and i love this. there should be a warning to all new snuffers NEVER BUY A PLASTIC TAP BOX if you want the true snuff smell and tate
Toque espresso 10g tin. Don’t know how good it is in 25g.
The gotards i have- followed by a sam g crest, not sure which it was. not had many bad experiences, but i really dont like gotard black night, to the point ill be tipping it out and just using the tap box. i quite liked the f+t princes special though i dont like perfumed ones, reminded me a bit of toilet cleaner though, in the best possible way.
I am reluctant to name anything the worst…I feel that just because I dont care for something certainly doesnt mean others may not quite enjoy it.That being said my “least favorite” would be anything with a floral or perfumey type scent no matter who makes it.Floral and perfume are just not my thing whatsoever. I have been very careful not to order anything with those types of scent…that is after my mistake of purchasing Gotard Black Night I think it was.Not saying it wasnt good[to someone into that sort of thing] but for me it was a nausiating experience after which I tossed the entire tap box in the trash and promised myself I would never again purchase floral perfumey snuff.
I havent really had a snuff I have never really disliked. I have a tin of Royal George and will maybe hit it once a year. I didnt really like 6 Photo Super Kaliash very much, to me it smelled like floor cleaner. Ive never had Toque Butt Cheeks and Bacon…I mean Cheese and Bacon, but it seems to be a love or hate with this one, but I’d give it a shot. Ive even had some of the infamous “barnyard snuffs” like Taxi, but it dosent really bother me and I’ll give em some good attention. Guys, dont throw out the snuffs you dont like, someone, like me, will take em off your hands and buy em out or trade.
I’ve had a few snuffs I’ve hated. Usualy it’s some underlying scent that just doesn’t agree with me. Rarely is it the primary scent. My least favorite is Packards club and it has a strange underscent that is just gross to me. Of course it’s some peoples favorites.
Gletscher Prise with out a doubt, but this used to be the most commonly available snuff in the US Also: any mentholated snuff. None are nose worthy. (unless suffering from a cold maybe) Toque Bourbon is in my nose now and is wonderful. Perhaps because it is fresh. The first sample I had was rather stale and bland. Spanish Gem ! Both just received in 100 gm bulk.
The worst ever for me has got to be cayenne pepper. I suffer some really irritating allergies so I decided to give it a shot in the hope of it being a novel treatment. For some reason that I have never been able to pin down, I decided that if I was going to do it then I should go for a large pinch in one quick go. Possibly I decided to because I am a big chili eater or because I am an idiot, I still can’t decide. The pain was worse than pepper spray and it lingered for some time. Having had life long skin allergies I thought I was pretty much immune to pain, I was to discover that I was wrong.
WoS Spearmint Plus (Presumably consisted of sand, and spearmint leaves from a decorative bottle on Granny’s spice rack from 1947) Railroad Mills Sweet (Swisher has evidently found a good place for their rejected cigars, which are combined with coursely ground filters. It seems to be topped off with saccharine.)
That’s what I was going to say. RR Mills Sweet. Just terrible, and the weakest nicotine ever.
Temptation Concord Grape was one I couldn’t deal with–reminded me of my magic- marker sniffing days. I’ve never had a bad plain type of snuff so I lean towards them.
Only worse, markers have a quality scent…at least!
Just tried 61 types from Mr. Snuff…the worst:Temptation Purple Passion,Q-Snuff Irish Coffee,Wow Fruit Cake, F&TnDr. JRJustice(terrible!),Fubar Bohica,Blast Gin & Tonic,Ozona Cherry (just put some wax camphor , up the nose),Blast Whisky & Honey,Blast Brandy Maple, Xichang Herbal, and Abraxas Connoisseur Cerise & Premium Fin (why bother?). About 5 are worth positive mention, but the Supreme Pan Parag Gutkha could?/should?.. be used to pave your driveway.
That’s the first negative comment I have seen about Cerise. I can’t wait to get mine to finally try it after all the wonderful things I’ve read. I wouldn’t rate Wow fruit cake as “the worst”, but it definitely didn’t remind me of any fruit cake that I’ve ever come across in my life. Not sure what they were thinking when they named that one. Haven’t made up my mind about Temptation Purple Passion yet. It’s in my nose at the moment and I don’t hate it. @DaveC don’t get me wrong, I respect your opinions. I just don’t have the same ones, and I really hope my opinion on the Cerise differs from yours. Of my latest order that’s the one I’m most looking forward to trying. Well that and the Q-Snuff Irish Coffee, which also made your worst list. To each their own. Can’t say what the worst I’ve tried is. As most of us will agree even if you hate one a few months later you might really enjoy it. I remember strongly disliking a few that I tried back when I placed my first online order when you could still order from the US. Don’t really remember which ones they were though. Perhaps if I remember which e-mail account I had when I placed that order I could see what I got and maybe it’ll come back to me. I was also a newb back then, and didn’t have my technique down yet so I didn’t care for any of the really dry fine snuffs. I still prefer the coarser and more moist snuff, but I am enjoying the dry ones more than before.
I like the QWS Sandalwood, I do find it the most like the real Indian sandalwood oil I’d buy in the early 90’s. IMO the Wilson’s smells more like sandalwood chips than a decent dose of the oil (still pretty good, though). I’d maybe prefer the QWS one made with a more neutral smelling tobacco, though, bright VA perhaps…
everyones nose is diffrent some of the most loved snuff I just hate. O&G is one of the grossest in my opinion. I pick up scents in it I’am sure other people aren’t picking up because well they wouldn’t like it either.
I am still new to the snuff world, only having tried 11 flavors. Though I’ve enjoyed them all, I would say Silver Dollar Spearmint is probably the worst that I’ve tried. It’s not bad, just not all that enjoyable for me. Toque Blueberry isn’t anything special either in my opinion.
McChrystal’s violet…if you get hay fever avoid like the plague…
Well, it’s not the worst, but I think I might have gotten hold of a bad batch of WoS’s Sherry. Now, I’ve HAD sherry, anf this ain’t it. Maybe that’s the woman’s name who made it or something, I dunno. First tin in decades I put the tape right back on.
I take back my previous post, I’ve been snuffing Toque Blueberry tonight and I’m loving it O_O
Bruton is the hardest snuff for me so far but I plan on fixing it since I have 4.5 ounces
@MattheFox: and by “fixing it”, I presume you mean “self-administer doses intravenously”? Because we All Knew it would come to that one day.
@Mike_B (laughing) it might come to that but I have a blend baking right now with hopes
I found WOS Royal George and Chocolate Orange to be equally putrid and nauseating.
Gawith Banana. Would have known better but a friend wanted to try it.
I did a Bruton mix with rum, banana, orange & pineapple experiment last week It sounds good but that is where it ended Smelled like the fruit department at the store, each fruit smells great but together they smell like what they throw in the trash
@MattheFox have you done an apple flavor yet? I have a fantasy that one day I will be ordering pots of your American snuff. Keep it up!
Has to be Toque champagne, nasty chemical grape flavor to me. Love all the other Toques flavors I have tried, especially Spanish Gem and Whiskey and Honey. My toque flavor of the week is Raspberry Menthol, very nice considering I am not a fan of sweet flavors or menthol.
Having singled out Banana I must withdraw it. Thanks to the forums here I tried it with my favorite F&T Macouba. The banana was tone down but enjoyable that way. It wore off quickly leaving the Macouba which seems to take longer to register.
Thanks for the idea, @asieg33, going to try mixing the over-the-top banana with something rugged, maybe Snafu Plain…
American Snuff Co. PEACH sweet snuff, worst I’ve tried to date. I have a full 32.6g can I suppose will hang around the collection, as a novelty and a reminder.
For some reason I couldn’t stand Toque Berwick Brown. No matter how I aired it out it the scent just made me not want to inhale…in fact it made me want to gag a bit. Since everyone’s scent preferences differ, I guess my nose just didnt prefer it.
mmmm, Berwick Brown, love it–horses chewing on violets and lavender while sauntering through the woods, some leather and tobacco underneath.
Tough one for me because I like the unique qualities of all snuffs. I am hard pressed to take anise though, the heavy licorice anise scent makes me a bit ill. Things like WoS Aniseseed is a hard one for me to enjoy. If I see anise in the flavoring, I tend to avoid it… Although I wouldn’t rule it out completely.
I couldn’t get along with Dholakia Medicated (tend to like some of their others though). The other would be “Anything highly perfumed with a heavy hit of musk”
Just tried 61 types from Mr. Snuff…the worst:Temptation Purple Passion,Q-Snuff Irish Coffee,Wow Fruit Cake, F&TnDr. JRJustice(terrible!), Fubar Bohica ,Blast Gin & Tonic,Ozona Cherry (just put some wax camphor , up the nose),Blast Whisky & Honey,Blast Brandy Maple, Xichang Herbal, and Abraxas Connoisseur Cerise & Premium Fin (why bother?). @DaveC i like bohica, but its good in small amounts, perhaps ground into another snuff. and whats the issue with the abraxas? not tried cerise, but i love premium now and again, particularly on an evening, however the girlfriend cant stand just the smell of it (shes never snuffed though). Up to now, its probably still between gotard black night, gotard coffee. if anyone strongly dislikes any abraxas, id be happy to take it off your hands! very happy! (i guess that goes for generally any plain/spiced snuff in general too)
I really didn’t care for sg Dr every medicated or sg wild duck, and the wild duck description had me expecting so much. Its not that they were bad, just really underwhelming for me.
The SG peppermints (at least the ones I’ve tried) are just a different genre of peppermints. I might have been disappointed if they were the first peppermints I’d tried, but I definitely dig them nowadays. To each their own, though…
Dholakia HDT. I found it brutal and flavorless. However, I put a q Tip soaked in clove oil in the tin, let it sit overnight and suddenly it became very nice. Also, like Mr_O above, I didn’t like the SG peppermints much, but every now and again, I enjoy them. I never throw any snuff away. I find my taste for different snuffs kind of varies with time.
it’s paul gotard - black night, for now.
Any single floral. I just don’t get on with them.
it’s paul gotard - black night, for now.
I agree. it’s the only PG i have tried and i find it revolting.
Any single floral. I just don’t get on with them.
I enjoy the floral scents. especially Rose.
Well, so far it’s still WoS Ice Liqourice - love the idea of liqourice snuff, but the menthol ruins it for me, instant brain freeze (though I should’ve guessed by the name) and Hedges as it’s so full of menthol smelling the tin is almost enough, but Fubar Fugazi Black Joe (aka ‘cough mixture and glue’) actually took over from them for a while. Just tried that one again though, and I’m starting to get into the flavour a little bit now. Goes to show you shouldn’t judge too quickly… :))
Samuel Gawith Mimosa has taken the place of whatever I said the first time. I couldn’t get it out of my nose fast enough, DISGUSTING! Though apparently some people like it as I traded it with distaind.
I have a new worst-snuff-ever-to-me: SG Celtic Talisman! It reeks of a moist chewing tobacco, more specifically, it reminds me of a straight flavored dip and that scent is nauseating to me. If only I could find a trader in the marketplace
I’m adding Dean swift’s s.p. to my list. I could go around my house collecting all the dust off of the ceiling fans and I’m not sure if I’d be able to tell the difference in a blindfolded snuff test
Toque Lavender . Lavender is ok in a soap but not in my nose … freaky stuff to my tastes
This is going to sound crazy but mine is Dholakia Swiss Chocolate. Don’t mind the flavor but it just really irritates my thought. On that note Fubar Shot of Rum does the same thing but I love the casing on that one.
I have no hesitation in nominating Swisher’s Checkerberry as the worst snuff I have ever tried. It simply smells of the muscle rub you would put on on a Saturday morning before a football match. And it stays in the nose for an age. I tried mixing it but it just overpowered all other scents.
Love the checkerberry in winter. Deep heat for the nose.
However much it pains me to say it, knowing how many people here enjoy this snuff, I think 6 Photo Cheeta smells like a wet dog just rolled around in my nose…not for me. Nothing against 6 Photo line, just Cheeta.
Anything FUBAR. The snuff, not our current government. (though I do disagree with A LOT that’s going on!)

i agree, though im still trying to like it. i got it because someone said it smells like nag champa. they lied, or have never smelled either.

Haha that’s funny, my Cheeta smells really incensy and I don’t get hardly any of the strong tobacco scents (fish, sweat, etc.) you get with other whites. I wonder if there are different batches around, or maybe it’s just my nose.
Toque Camphor and clove. Those are scents I like but this one Just turned me off.
Silver Dollar Spearmint, smells like Crumbs of Comfort gone stale.
I came back to Royal George. Repulsive stuff! Truly the only snuff I’ve had that came out and said: I’m terrible!
Temtation concord grape, it smells soo good, but when I put it in my nose that is an entirely different story.
Hands down Neffa Ifrika. I dont know if this is really considered snuff since a good bit of its consistency seems to be saw dust or sand mixed with a little tobacco. Wow! what a horrid smell though. I tried to like it, but wow.
I am a newb at snuff, but have not had a really bad snuff yet… Cheeta came a tad close…lil bit fishy… 8-}
suggestion: if you hate a snuff and can’t off it some way, try toasting it… It might make it a bit more interesting…maybe burn some of the nastiness out. @-)
The worst snuff I ever tried had become a favorite for a few tins. The same with most of the runners up. The only one I never kept to find out is Magnet Peach.
Singularly, I am going to have to go with Dholakia Swiss Chocolate as well. That would be followed by any spearmint snuff, I like it in gum, for some reason in my nose I have a very different reaction. I have a can of CoC I will never finish… if only I can find the K.
Single florals and Royal George but I plan on reordering Toque’s florals and WoS Royal George because, you know, evolving nasal palette. Hated them a couple of years ago. Time to see if I still do.
A Dean Swift that smelled like burning rubber.
The only one I never kept to find out is Magnet Peach.
Ugh, Magnet Peach! I’d thought I’d forgotten its horrors. Thanks for reminding me! I don’t remember what happend to mine. I think most of it became insecticide and poisoned some orange aphids. Definitely in my top 3 worst snuffs ever.
just revisited an old tin of mag. peach and concur.
I also had a Wilsons of Sharrow Tangerine that was sent away. I did think that it would have been a good snuff after a bit of aging but for some reason it was used in a trade. In fact @Xander is it you who has it. If so perhaps you should give it a go as it should be just about ready now.
My notes tell me I first tried WoS Tangerine in a trade. They don’t say from whom. They also say it was first tried in June 2009, so its long gone now.
After giving Cheeta a little time it smells like lime instead of dog or perhaps I have simply convinced myself of that because I like the high nic hit and the burn. Still don’t get any incense at all, just lime if anything.
I’m not a fan of the American Scotches, or English Toasts, but the only snuffs I’ve ever bought that I simply couldn’t finish the tins were G&H Jasmine and Taxi Red. (Of the two, the Taxi was my least favorite.)
@Mouse I think you are describing Dean Swift Black Watch, it smells of road tar & smoking tires w/just a smidge of shoe polish; I actually like it :-bd
Gottard anise in a tap box, bland, boring
Well, there are few… PG Blackberry. Golden Shot Apricot. SG Gold Mull. I will never finish them, but believe me, I’ve been trying for few months. GSA is simply disgusting. Blackberry is completely unsnuffable. And SG GM chokes me. It is so intensive, so… flowerful, I can’t even take a breath.
mmmmm, Gold Mull, think I’ll have some, I love the stuff.
Blast Wine and Cheese - utterly foul!
Toque Spanish Gem - I love this snuff, I would give my right hand to find out how this is made.
Poschl Gletscherprise and/ or Packards Club Put me off snuff for years.
@Java Use the Taxi red as a dip instead. That’s what it originally made for and is lovely and strong (read mega nicotine) with a wicked burn.
I’m not sure if it was really “bad” per say (It really may have just been a personal taste kinda thing), and I’m not sure if it was one or the other or both, but it would have been either the Dholakia Kamal or Ganga. I’m sure I have read some users here have loved them, but several years ago when I tried them, they just did not groove with my nose. that being said, they are still worth a try, very unique!
WoS brandy for me. I find no brandy smell just tobacco and the tin is a nightmare to open
Blast Wine and Cheese - utterly foul!
I maybe ought to add that the second worst I’ve tried is SG Apple. It is certainly discernible as apple, but there is something very wrong about it too. I can’t put my finger on why it’s so awful - but I can’t put it up my nose either :-&
Quit sandalwood.didnt like it.not as strong now I’ve left it 6months.i will use it but to overpowering for me.i guess I just don’t sandalwood.
@snuffykib I clicked agree, but I agree with a footnote. I don’t care for that one at all, but I found that sandalwood can be done in a more balanced fashion. Try the WoS or GH Sandalwoods for instance. I quite like those.
There’s two snuffs I’m going to mention now which will surprise a lot of people. Creme de Figue and Mull of Oa deserve a mention in this thread IMHO. I actually like them for being easy to take, and love their scents - but those two have the most vile throat drip I can recall of any snuffs. They deserve a mention in this thread not just for the gruesome throat drip, but so being so bloody wonderful for the few seconds before the drip occurs. They’re utterly wonderful snuffs that I cannot bear to use - and that’s just torture!
I should add, I can use these snuffs if I have a strong tasting drink - but then it means I don’t enjoy the drink, and the drink can also spoil the scent in the nose …

I AGREE COMPLETELY, yes! they do deserve to be here. it is a problem i have with all the premium snuffs to an extent, but with the SWS it is extreme! i can handle it with the fine abraxas, but the SWS… i occasionally sniff the tin, but i cant bring myself to put them in my nose.

yea I know what mean but doesn’t bother me much.have you tried blowing your nose out before you get the drip start.might help.

Thanks for advice,I will try some others.
@Firestarter0 … I’m kinda glad someone agrees. I thought I’d get lynched for it @sniffykib … Unfortunately I get the drip very quickly, or at least I did the last two times I tried with them
… Unfortunately I get the drip very quickly, or at least I did the last two times I tried with them
I get it before i get the urge to blow, or any nicotine. ive tried multiple times out of desperation, and the drip is so bad its actually made me retch a couple of times.
I feel the exact same way with Café 11 and Molens’. I love these snuffs, but the throat drip is just awful. Can’t use them in public because of the… Eeehhh… Gagging #-o A drink and something to spit in is required for me to use these snuffs!
… Unfortunately I get the drip very quickly, or at least I did the last two times I tried with them

Yup, me too I will try them again before letting them go. I might also try mixing a bit in with some plain coarse from Toque or even some KB to see if that helps at all
I sometimes get the hiccups from the drip from CDF and Cafe 11 other than that I don’t mind the harsh drip especially because those are some delicious scents.
Just to be contrary I guess, but I have no problems with any of the Abraxas or Sir Walter Scott snuffs. I get All of the pleasure but don’t think I have ever had the throat drip people are complaining of. Lucky I guess. But for me, I have to pay the piper pretty much every time I use a menthol snuff - especially if with any power at all. The problem is that I really like menthol so I still use from time to time. But if I am ever in the mood for a terrifically snuffed up and closed off nose that is impossible to breathe through… Just one pinch of a strong menthol is all it takes for a good 10 hours of breathing ‘pleasure/challenge’.
Maybe it’s because I’m still a relative noob, but I really liked GH Jockey Club, lol. I think it’s one of my favorites.
Dholakia African, I usually like their products, but this one I found to be very off putting.
Toque Bourbon, very clumpy and a rather unpleasant smell which lingered far to long
I agree when I first opened it I thought it was the cheese and bacon that had been labled wrong . And I am a lover of good aged bourbons and to me this smelt and tasted all wrong sorry roderick
F&T Seville
See this for me was a very good snuff strange how this snuff is such a love hate snuff .
I haven’t found an Apricot or Peach snuff I’ve actually enjoyed. Some Cherry is ok, but I only use the peach, etc. when I have nothing else.
Richt kind ? And I got a tin of peppermint dark that was like a tin of damp bb’s. Couldn’t keep it in my nose and was too waxy to dip
WoS Thyme and Lemon has climbed to the top of my don’t-like list, at least the tin I received. If I cut it with ten parts of a plain snuff it would still be over-scented.
Everything by F&T with the exception of High Dry Toast.
SG Apricot & Peach are just wrong. Unless that is the way the smell in the UK. Smells like a box of crayola crayons left on the radiator.
WoS coffee cream… YUCK
Bohican. Just vile. It should be banned under the Geneva Convention.
From a scent standpoint, of the snuffs I’ve tried, a tin of Samuel Gawith Irish D Light that I received from another snuffhouse member in a trade was absolutely horrid. Ironic, because SG Irish D Light is my favorite snuff, scent-wise. For too-much-nicotine - Taxi Blue - I tried that and immediately loved the scent. It put a smile on my face momentarily, then… BAM! Right in the head! I felt dizzy, hot, sick, dying…you name it… I ran to the shower, threw off my clothes and stood under the water for a good 10 minutes, blowing my nose, digging in my nose, rubbing my face etc. I hate that because I really liked the scent of Taxi Blue. -the end-
Most SG fruits are pretty awful - they pretty much all taste like someone sprayed fruity air freshener in a hospital waiting room. But nothing - NOTHING - compares with Wilson’s Chili Chocolate. Good God.
Stok Tropicana. Terrible base tobacco and a sweet citrus scent that has nothing to do with the name Tropicana.
Dholakia rose chocolate This snuff scent stick with you for days. You may like it, not me too cloying
So far, Samuel Gawith Chocolate is the only snuff I’ve tried that I have considered chucking ( though I haven’t yet ). Weird metallic burnt scent and the chocolate doesn’t smell like real chocolate at all. It is in a tap box so maybe that’s some of the problem but I think this snuff has bigger issues
I still haven’t tried anything worse than Seville :-&
SG apricot, I consider this as scent pollution and it still sits on top of a book shelf, far away from me and the rest of my snuff.
Fido Spicy Treat. I couldn’t decipher the different spices used, it just seemed to my nose like a jumbled mess with some wet cement on top.
But nothing - NOTHING - compares with Wilson’s Chili Chocolate. Good God.
I’ve put my 5g tin in a 10g Toque Chocolate tin that had about 3 grams left, and stuck the remaining 2 grams I had of WoS Chocolate in as well, and you can still see the flames when you take the lid off. :)) Might have to add some De Kralingse Chocosnuff in to try to damp it down further… WoS Ice Liqourice - I love the idea of liqourice snuff, but there’s just far too much menthol in there for my sensitive schnoz. They should take ‘adding menthol’ lessons from 6 Photo.
Another vote for Ozona Cherry. Actually threw it away.
F&T Bordeaux. I keep thinking nothing could be this bad, so I keep trying it with similar results. Its like that old lady in front of you at the store with the really over the top perfume. You hold your breath till you get out of the store, and still manage to catch whiffs of it all the way home. But now it’s in your nose!
Old Mill Cherry Bomb. A disaster that made a lovely scented insecticide. Back to the drawing board.
F&T Bordeaux. I keep thinking nothing could be this bad, so I keep trying it with similar results. Its like that old lady in front of you at the store with the really over the top perfume.
I love 6 Photo Super Kailash and 41 Photo Himtaj Golden, but Mrs Pufnsuff hates me taking them - she refers to both as ‘old lady who puts on perfume instead of washing’. 8-| :))
Everything by F&T with the exception of High Dry Toast.
You must’ve missed out on Old Paris.
This is a tough question for me, most snuffs I try range between “delicious” and, well, “neutral” I guess? Seville was definitely not a keeper, and I was surprised to find that spearmint snuffs are pretty unpalatable to me despite (or because of?) the fact that I use spearmint snus and chew spearmint gum every day. The baby butt scent I got from 6 Photo No. 6 had me reeling. I’m also still in a staring contest with a sealed can of FUBAR Bohica, so I guess we’ll see what happens there… ( @Grant - You’ve gotten me very excited to try my Taxi Blue!)
just tried the Samuel Gawith Chocolate again, I still don’t like it at all. maybe I’ll store it for a few years and see if it changes ( doubtful)
Everything by F&T with the exception of High Dry Toast.
You must’ve missed out on Old Paris.
yeah Old Paris is nice- uncle Squinty has a funny review about it too… HDT is excellent though- can do all day long
My home made Rustica with uncured leaves. It was absent any taste but chlorophyll. Now its aging well so it should be good this summer. For regular store bought snuffs, my least favorite was Railroad Mills Scotch. Maybe I’m just not used to it, but it sucked compared with my Garrett. As for the rest… I mean all of them, I usually find something I like about them. If not, I put them aside until I do. I guess the famous White Elephant is one I don’t like too well. I’d read so much about it, how great it was, etc, etc. Its almost tasteless to me, especially compared with Cheetah, which I like a lot.
Hahaha, some snuffs I have on order have been mentioned on this thread. Oh well.
Wilsons of Sharrow Blueberry - I thought my feet were stinking. It took me a few of pinches to realize it wasn’t me, it was the snuff. At first I blamed the White Elephant, but it turned out to be the WoS Blueberry. For me it is paint + a hint of blueberries going in followed by dirty socks. Maybe I’ll try it again after a few months.
Back when dinosaurs (and hippies) roamed the earth I tried some Heliotrope snuff, maybe from Dean Swift. It was not a wise idea. Like tooting powdered incense.
Special Edition Black Truffle
Samuel Gawith Chocolate, dried up tapbox
I’ve learned with cigars, pipe tobacco and now snuff, that first (and even second) impressions are not always correct. Otherwise OM Black Velvet would have easily made this list. But after some air exposure to open up the flavors, BV is now a favorite.
That said, my least favorite blend in my short snuff career thus far is Wow Coffee Bite. In my nose, the aromas are of stale coffee with a hint of wet dog.
For me most unpleasant experience with snuff tobacco was Gawith Cola by Poeschl. It was like accidentaly snorted cheap and nasty supermarket branded cola with some mentol in it. In general germanic oiled base tobaco with menthol is no-go for me. Jack
Yeah, to each his/her own. One of the things that I try to avoid is well, avoiding certain snuffs based on someone’s opinion of it. Now, if everyone except “that one guy” hates it, I might just avoid it. Things I like might be horrendous in someone else’s opinion so why bother? Lol!
I’m going to have to change my vote from Bohica to what snuffysmiff said–Toque Black Truffle
I have to agree, no offence but black truffle didn’t agree with me.
Haven’t tried Black Truffle… so I’ll have to go with SG Elmo’s Reserve or X blend. Yuck.
Poschl Alpina (sickly sweet, only sticky snuff I’ve found so far texture-wise) and Packard’s Club (a toilette monstrosity), Wilsons’ Brandy (more like rotten raisins) and that’s it for me. There are others I don’t like (like Dholakia Black or McChrystals Raspberry) or my nose can no longer stand (like Gletscher Prise) but I reckon they are not as intrinsically insufferable as those I mentioned before. I’m doubtful about including Wilsons’ Lavender and Carnation, because the fragrances are nice enough while the flours seem criminally mistreated. A whiff of their own Fribourg’s Macouba or Rodrick’s Toque Rose will dispell any notions about their Lavender and Carnation being top notch florals, but I can still picture them as being enjoyable fpr some fellows so I won’t include them on my list.
Fubar Bohica tops my list due to the pain it causes from the chili. My 2nd worst is AlpenPrise because it was so mediocre, and bland. I have also come to dislike many of the S Gawith florals, esp Wallflower.
I loved Fribourg & Treyer HDT, so I tried another from them. Princes Special. It reminds me of a squirt of perfume in a can of Copenhagen dip. Abraxas Connoisseur Cerise on the other hand has a nice aroma, but has the grind of dip…it’s just too thick for me. I had to reread the label to confirm it actually was snuff.
SG wallflower ties with torque black truffle for me. The only two I’ve been totally unwilling to use more than twice. The wallflower I have away, no one would even take the truffle.
Some of Fubar snuffs match the line for me. If I have to choose one, I choose the infamous “ashtray batch” Fubar Grunt. Puaj :-&
Fubar Mango… Horrific. 2nd runner up is that ashtray batch of Grunt.
Well, so far for me, it’s got to be Toque Black Truffle as well (sorry Roderick!). No complaints though, you spend your money and take your chance.
Dholakia herbal…technically it’s snuff but I would pick “things I find in the garbage for 500 Alex”
Mine would have to be even though its nice tobacco base, I would have to say Samuel gawith Elmo’s. to me it just has a car freshener scent very artificial to me. But I see a lot of people don’t like the black truffle. Myself I really enjoy it. I would have to say its a love/hate type situation.
so far I’ve only put in two orders and have only received the first. I’ve liked them all Bernard, Viking, F&T, SWS.
I did a lot of research before ordering though, and I highly suggest you do that so ya don’t get any bombs. Research each one, see what others have said before ordering.
I got She for Women - Cherry in a pot luck. I looked past the marketing and treated it as a new cherry snuff, and it just kinda sucks. Or maybe I never did get past the label.
Wilsons blueberry mixed with Paul gotard gooseberry, fine on their own but mixed together they give of an after smell of a barn filled cow poo…DONT TRY. Had to load up the hedges right after
Gawith Hoggarth Lakeland. Smelled like cat litter. Took no less than Dean Swift Bezoar to erase the flavor.
I don’t like Fubar Plain. Maybe, because I’m new though I don’t know. I have only been snuffing for almost 2 weeks and not too often because of work. How do you guys like Fubar Plain?
FUBAR Grunt
Make it fried squid and I’m in!
FUBAR Grunt
F&T Santo Domingo. Parmesan! Read between the lines guys! It’s not pretty…
I also got some non-tobacco snuff by mistake one time from Wilsons whose other snuffs I mostly really like. There is a review on here somewhere from 2008. Anyway horrible, just horrible. Thankfully I can’t remember the name. It was like yellow plasticizer. WRETCHED! But that was for a non-tobacco snuff so F&T’s SD metioned above is the worst snuff I’ve tried and I do like most of the rest of F&T’s selections.
Railroad.
Although I started out on American Scotches, they are my least favorite.
This is one of my favorite threads on this site … I read through all of the comments, and some of the horror-story comparisons are absolutely hilarious and had me rolling. I’m a noob at snuff and don’t have a particular worst to contribute yet (not that I really want to) … I think I will do some double-checking on this thread before I place my next order. I know it’s all subjective, but there do seem to be a few miscreant blends where there is a general consensus.
@Roderick I love the Black truffle snuff. Something about it brings me back to when I was a chef… and I also do enjoy putting truffle oil on my food too.
I think I can bring myself to enjoy most types of snuff no matter what in some way, but bernard’s civette extrefein is pretty hard to like unless snuffing on top of a great base snuff, as an accenting flavor. I love smokey flavored snuff, but this literally smells and feels like snuffing straight soot out of a fireplace. Someone said it’s a very elegant snuff, but I don’t see it. To me it is like some weird old foreign funk smell that some old working class geaser from russia would snuff or something, cause the nic hit is intense on it.
Like I said, I can usually bring myself to find some aspect of pleasure with almost any snuff. I like to consider myself the Andrew Zimmern (Host of Bizarre Foods on Travel Channel) of the snuff world, because I will try any snuff and find some pleasurable characteristic. That being said, with F&T Seville, I dedicate this snuff as an after shower/bathing snuff, because it has a nice powdered perfumey soap smell that compliments the feeling of being clean and showered. I think there’s a snuff for any and every occasion. Klostermischung by Bernard is my all time favorite snuff to shovel heaps up my nose before getting in the shower, because i just let the nic hit then blow it all out in my hand and wash it off while I’m in the shower haha, then once I am clean I will occasionally pinky dip a seville, but it is a damn weird smell and definitely only a once in awhile snuff.
I fancy trying the Black Truffle, but it doesn’t seem to be at Snuffstore…
WoS Apricot just didn’t work for me … I found it nauseating and couldn’t wait for the scent to dissipate from my moustache. It’s really hit or miss with the fruit snuffs.
All FT except HDT and Fubar Bohican.
Fubar Bohica is not only bad, it is evil.
I was informed that it is the choice snuff of demons and devils.
In fact, the recipe was allegedly formulated by Lucifer himself, on a day when he was in a particularly foul and rotten mood. According to various sources, he was quoted as saying that snuff in general can deliver heaven or hell, but that Bohica is the only snuff he ever found that simulated hellfire in both burn and scent.
Beware… >:)
All the bad snuff I’ve tried has been a long time ago. I think once you know what you like, you can pretty much tell from the comments on snuffhouse what you should try and what you should avoid. Saves a lot of angst.
786 Agree with @JakartaBoy; the snuffs I mentioned in this thread in 2010 and 2012 are still the worst I have ever had.
Whale Vomit - I guess I don’t have rich taste
786 @basement_shaman, do they make an ambergris snuff?
Dholakia Black…smells like horse***t. People around you also wonder if you stepped in something.
786 @Rans, While I enjoy the “bucolic” scent of fermented tobacco common in many fine Indian productions, I have to agree that Dholakia Black fails to put this aroma in a context which would make it pleasing instead of offensive.
Thus far, the worst snuff I’ve tried is Viking Dark, though disappointing would probably be more accurate. I don’t know what I expected, but I won’t be buying it again and suspect the tin I have will be around long after I’m gone. I know it’s fairly popular, but… One man’s trash, and all that.
I sort of feel the same way about Viking Dark but I’m not to deep in the tin yet so I’m going to reserve judgement myself. If you have a completely clear nasal palate when taking it then there are some interesting scents that can be missed if it is following other more heavily flavored snuffs but I’m still not seeing why it gets the praise it does.
Silver Dollar Scotch.
GH Sea Breezes. I’ve given it time, but this isn’t working for me at all. Sadly, I’ve got about 24.5 grams left…
41P White Elephant. But it’s also one of the best. Go figure…
A sample of Viking peach but it might be because it was an old sample.
Q Sandalwood. I got an ancient bullet in a ‘potluck’, and the label was so greasy it was translucent. The scent was so off-putting I threw it away after one sniff. I NEVER throw away snuff.
The worst ones I tried are my own when I try to jack the nic up too high. Never had a bad store bought one though, even ones I don’t prefer that I’ve tried I still wouldn’t call bad, just situational and those situations might not come up often.
…one i like and ran out of…
Still…Black Truffle…retch
Oddwolf, menthol isn’t bad but the original made me want to burn my nose
41p himtaj black, I like the occasional Indian snuff, but this one doesn’t smell right, doesn’t help that the scent lasts forever either
I just took my 2nd pinch of this to confirm, Dholakia Black ranks #307 out of the 307 snuffs I’ve tried. The after-scent is just too damn funky. It smells ok at first, maybe like an odd natural snuff, but the scent that lingers… I could describe it to a T, but I don’t want to offend anyone. I don’t have anything bad to say about any other Dholakia snuff, but the Black won’t be going into my nose again. Maybe some nice Dholakia Aniseed will clear me out now…
@SHbickel I’ve got several of those Q snuffs you mentioned that I still haven’t tossed in the trash for some reason, greasy labels and all. I’ve periodically thought about trying one, but your comment has me leaning towards tossing them. I have to update my list of never agains with another Viking product, this being Viking Brown. I enjoy Viking Blonde, but the rest of the range I just can’t stand to the point where if I can’t trade it away I’ll be throwing it away.
Viking dark, spearmint scent aside, it reminds me of my first attempt at snuff, all amateurish in the kitchen blender sieved through a splatter screen. I might turn it into spearmint snus. I dunno, I might be a tad harsh here, after I finished making it into snuff (dried it and turned it into powder then sieved it properly) it wasn’t bad but I’m not a fan of mint. Trying to snuff it up makes me think that’s probably what snuffing bird shot must be like. Too coarse, too wet, and they contaminated my batch with spearmint.
I haven’t had a horrible snuff yet. Once I figured out how to properly snuff the dry fine stuff, I ended up liking Garrett sweet. The worst I have in my small stash is silver dollar vanilla. It’s not horrible, just underwhelming and mediocre.
I got a couple bullets of She Cherry Menthol in a 50g Potluck. Maybe I have to give it another go at some point but I felt like I was putting Robitussin in my nose. Definitely my least favorite at the moment.
Silver Dollar Vanilla (edit: meant to say SD COLA) is another one that while not horrible isn’t good either. I can’t pick up much in the way of cola, and the dust like consistency makes it a headache to snuff and with no cola scent to make it worth the trouble. Definitely won’t be ordering it again. Meanwhile SD Apricot is delightful.
@Toby I didn’t know silver dollar vanilla was supposed to smell like cola. I thought it was just vanilla.
Aside from toasts, other finely ground snuffs and menthols (the majority of which I find unusable) - I refuse to try the hot chilli ones, the single worst scent I have encountered so far is still Blast Wine and Cheese. Toque cheese and bacon was pretty grim, but the blast cheese and wine made me feel physically ill.
still SG Chocolate
Paul Gothard vanilla… Uwwwh
@Psicko I meant Cola, not Vanilla.
@Tobe, gotcha that makes more sense. I read that on lack of sleep.
Silver Dollar Apricot: initially ok, but fades into something that reminds me of Papaya, which i like the taste of, but smells like vomit; Poschl Apricot to a lesser degree.
I wasnt a big fan of SD vanilla. Not sure if all vanilla scented snuff is similar. The vanilla scent was way too light. I’m not a huge fan of SD in the first place, but this one was worse. I have yet to try apricot, scotch, cola and maybe one or two others. A local store in AZ has about 8 to 10 different kinds of SD.
I know lots of people like it, but Kendal Brown is absolutely disgusting to me. Like cramming a barn up my nose. No thanks!
FUBAR BOHICA to me is a very acquired scent you either will like it or dislike it.I DISLIKE it thank goodness at that time Mr Snuff was selling it at .99cents for a 50gram tub I just had to try it. #-o >:)
BOHICA is just nuts. I think I read someone enjoying the snuff and the slight burn that accompanies. That person either got a defective batch, or is just the toughest dude on the planet. That snuff covers my face with sweat, snot, and tears. Smells ok until it hits ya…
41 photo Himtaj golden reminds me of discs in urinal in public toilet, not nice.
i liked all that have have tried from toques offerings except for chocolate, strangely my brother loved it.
it reminded me of a chocolate scented candle that made me feel sick.
I know I am going to get hate for this one, and mind you I enjoy almost every single other snuff they make, but Gawith and Hoggarth English Rose was the most cloying, artificial, weak tobacco base snuff I have had IMO. Maybe my batch was bad, and it was in the big tub not the tap box, but holy cow I went from the first sniff thinking, “well, maybe I will try this later and like it,” to the second thinking, “Okay, yea, this is awful. Round file.”
Hands down, Dholakia Blueberry Mint.
i can’t really bash a snuff as ther is one i didnt care for when i first tried it. It reminded me of stinky Tennis
Shoe smell, was bad… it’s a highly respected snuff too. mebbe when i revisit it, will be different…
and now i just thot of another one that i didnt care for and thot it messed the sniffer up the whole day,
that one was a macuba… hated it and doubt i’ll revisit that one
McDonald’s snuff. I don’t understand why Billions of people enjoy it but I don’t,!! :-q
@nicmizer, I’ve never even heard of that, unless it’s some kind of joke that I’m not in on. Please explain!
@Hawaiian_Ryan thanks for the sample of FUBAR BOHICA and the warning you put on it. Oh my God. I thought I was going to die! 8-X never again! [-X
Santo Domingo. I’ll be honest, I’m a huge fan of WoS Best Dark, and the first few pinches of SD, I thought I’d found my new favourite - it was the same experience, but more complex. Then after a few more pinches it literally made me nauseous, and I’m not sure why.
Dholakia black snuff . I take only two pinch of this , no good smell . The tin will be full forever
41 photo yellow Lilly mint
I found my worst snuff ever. I would say without a doubt its stok banana.
FUBAR BOHICA not because of the flavor/scent as I really enjoy the scent / flavor but the pepper is just way the hell overboard! G’Day
Gonna have to try some Bohica to see what all the fuss is about. I love extreme curries so maybe that’ll put me in good stead? Taxi red is the worst I’ve had - the consistency of wet tea leaves and the smell of a buffalo’s butt… presumably.
After years of hearing about the bohica I’m finally going to get to see for myself what the controversy is about, come my next package lol. The taxi, am I incorrect in thinking that that was an oral tobacco?
Dholokia black snuff, I am not a fan at all. Also bernard zweifacher, far too sweet for my nose at the moment, it gives me a headache since you cant flush the scent, it lingers for hours.
WoS thyme & lemon. those two on their own have great scents to them but the combination makes me gag
… and yet Thyme and Lemon is one of the snuffs I’ll miss most from the current “cull” of snuff blends. I can snuff it for days on end, and have considered trying to make my own. One mans meat is another mans poison.
^ im also seeing a lot that i really like too. bohica gets a bad wrap. if you need to wake up on a graveyard shift, one snuff of that and you will wake up immediately! its better than a hot cup of coffee. it hurts so good!
Gold rush by Six photo - quite the opposite of the other heavenly snuff they have.
I like it @newbiesnuffer It is certainly a wild scent , which keeps me going back for more :)
How do you find the Natural ? It’s on my next order
I have a love/hate relationship with Dholakia White. That stuff is foul… it smells like feet/fish/body odor all rolled into one. To add to it, it’s so fine that I end up dusting my brain with the stuff no matter how lightly I try to take it. @Skell18 sent me some back in 2012, and after 5 years I still can’t seem to take this stuff without looking like a fool.
That being said, I keep buying the rancid stuff. I’m glad it exists. It’s got a disgusting funk, but I kind of like it.
If you’re looking for a more direct example, I’ll go with Toque Cheese & Bacon. It’s quality, well made, and has a nice grind; not what I want to put up my nose though. I love Toque snuff, but I won’t buy another tin of Cheese & Bacon.
For me , it’s Bernard Magic Moments Black . That stuff is the work of the Devil , in my opinion . :D
@Pikey - Hey, thats nice. To each his own, of course
The Natural is pretty nice. Its a plain tobbacco snuff, but it does have a woody aromatic edge to it. Also, it is finely milled but surprisingly easy on the nose. Decent nicotine content!
WoS Jockey Club. I have yet to find a proper adjective for it, it is just beyond anything. Poison!
GH :-&
I think the worst one I’ve tried so far is SG Golden Glow. It smells like tiger balm.
@Psicko call me crazy but I actually like the smell of tiger balm!
@Oregon, I didn’t clarify it. I like the smell of tiger balm, just doesn’t work as a snuff. It’s too much when in the nose.
I like Golden Glow, although I can see how it could easily be the worst snuff for a lot of people. Very pungent.
FUBAR Jungle Fever. It’s completely over the top artificial mango with some sort of underlying perfume. Seems like it would be better suited for being an air freshener in a bathroom.
Let that one air @Afterglow . I tried a tin recently , wasn’t hugely impressed at first but it’s definitely improving .
I am a massive recent fan of Sixphoto Gold Rush though , so I like that type of flour and mango trip . Sometimes the fruit takes a while to wake up when I crack a fresh tin .
I found my fresh Jungle Fever like this with the fruit dormant , a bit too heavy on the menthol ,with a touch of sandalwood or summat . I m hoping the perfume element will fade quickly and the mango/menthol combination will balance out over the next week or 3 .
SG Jasmine and WoS Rose.
Both reminiscent of those old, powdery air freshener packs they used to stand on the window sill in Gents toilets back in the seventies and eighties.
They stink like an explosion in a talcum powder factory.
I gave both of them a fair old try, but have now taped them up, and will give them another chance in a couple of years time. See if they or me improve any with age.
F & T Princess, the silver came to my house totally corroded, in addition it is too thick and damp to be comfortable in the nose. I’m really not sure if the Princes I have is in poor condition, therefore my review is a little blind. But it’s definitely one of the worst experiences I’ve had with snuff. Another one that I do not like is Six Photo Natural (extra strong golden natural snuff) is the closest thing to sniffing earth, goes straight to the throat and causes immediate cough, maybe it is my experience but being honest I have never managed to take a pinch and find pleasure.
Wilson’s of Sharrow Natural. It was ok on first opening but after a few days smelt of damp hay. I ended up tossing it.
WE Garrett Sweet … like snorting powdered sugar. [-X
Samuel Gawith Lavender. My buddy bought some and I swear that I have never smelled anything that smelled that much like a port-o-potty in my whole life. I couldn’t stop laughing. He doesn’t smell it like that - but boy does it smell f*cking exactly like a port-o-potty.
WOW FruitCake - up there in the hall of fame of worst possible flavours for me.
I won’t get much support on this, and I’ll add that I’ve only been using snuff for about 3 months … but, Toque Berwick Brown … like a nose full of laundry detergent !
@remi1au My first experience with Berwick Brown was quite negative too. After a bit of airing out, I tried again. It’s now the number one snuff that I’d never want to be without, and I have a few hundred grams stashed away. This might sound stupid, but I like Berwick Brown so much that I try not to use it. I know that if I do, I’ll not touch the 7.5kg of other snuffs in my stash. I let myself have some as a treat occasionally, but try to consume the lesser favourites first.
@remi1au, yes it does remind me a bit of laundry detergent. But for me in s good way. Try airing it out a bit, or put it away and try later. Our noses are always changing and sometimes we like something that we absolutely despised at some time.
WE Garrett Scotch. It was like I was putting the contents of an ash tray up my nose.
Haven’t binned it though, might try it again at some later date when I have had more experience with snuff in general.
Yeah, I didn’t like any of the scotches when I first started. I ended up liking them.
Fribourg&Treyer Princes! If I wanted to indulge in sniffing sand that smelled liked my grandmother then I would do just that - sniff sand that smells like my grandmother.
W.E. Garret Strong Scotch is my least liked, so far. Man that stuff is harsh. My first snuffle of it must’ve looked like that scene from Pulp Fiction where Mia unknowingly snorts heroin. That being said, it nicely fortifies some ground pipe tobacco I’ve been using until my sampler order of Wilsons tins from Mr. Snuff arrives.
BLAST Gin and Tonic. Artificial lime scented cow manure.
McCrystal’s Apricot.
I quite dislike the title of this thread. I’ve had several snuffs that did not do it for me, but I can’t say I’ve ever had a “bad” snuff. What is the snuff whose aroma you most disliked would be more precise.
I have found I dont like perfumed snuffs at all. Grabed a few tins of F&T, gave them away and traded some after a day or 2. I just cant stand those weird, overpowering smells
@ROGUE I think they were handy in old England (and elsewhere) back in the day when horses were crapping in the streets and people were tossing out their chamber pot contents in the street.
Nowadays overly perfumed snuffs can be a bit much, I agree. I just got some F&T Princes to try and it is quit perfumey. Apparently this is less perfumed than Princes Special. Princes Special must be awful. LOL
Yeah, no, I get that, but I think Id rather smell horseshit than overly perfumed snuff.
Horse shit ain’t go bad, but human refuse is disgusting.
Horse shit … theres a snuff for that, its called Dholakia Black :))
GH Tia Maria in a tap box, bone-dry and scented with overly sweet artificial aroma. Since it was the only snuff I had at the time, I managed to sniff it to the last grain, but it made me avoid whole GH range for years…
Indian ‘Umbrella’
I still think the worst one I’ve tried was packards club from poschl. It had a fake citrus scent over a scent I can only describe as generic bad cologne.Only worst thing I ever snuffed with a tin that opened in my pocket and absorbed all the none lovely restaurant smells from that shift, mainly the smell of fish that was being used for the special that night.
@bob And Packards Club is one of my favorites! Love the diversity of tastes among snuffers.
@willynelson it is not that it’s bad. It’s just that cologne smell does not agree with me. Which is sad cause the fruity citrusy part of the scent is great. Though not sure what it is but most of the snuffs of that brand disagree with me and do horrid things to my nose even if I enjoy them at first. Ironically the Alpina and President are the only two that agree with my nose.
For me any snuff that is mentholated
I’m not saying they are “bad” but better stated as not for me are the snuffs from India, I can’t get over the gamey barnyard thing going on with the ones I tried.
Elmo’s reserve. I heard good reviews of it and bought a tin but I guess I can’t stand the smell of tonka beans…it’s gross, like sticking powdered plastic and play-doh up my nose.
@captainblackboogers i love elmos and i got so much of it because snuffstore.de sent me an elmos instead of celtic talisman but they corrected it promptly and sent me the celtic without the need of sending back the elmos now i got two tins and one for free great customer service
try airing out or your elmos a bit or just leave it for 3 month or so in the tin. the aroma might even out a bit
personaly i find the elmos very natural in its smell its a good one to bring in some vanilla into mixes
try mixing your elmos with a schmalzler and a choco snuff where the elmos just needs a tiny amount
right now the least favorite tins i have are… Jockey club. Yellow Taxi, Toque blueberry Menthol.
@SunnyDay. Elmos is one of the snuffs I really wanted to like so was disappointed when the smell made me feel ill. Maybe I have an allergy to Tonka.
I have some Toque chocolate I could experiment mixing with, but the closest thing I have to Schmaltzer is Gletscher pris. This is going to be fun.
I think i’ll mix a bit of it into some viking brown or Kendal Brown original. Might dampen the smell a bit.
@captainblackboogers i wouldnt mix menthol with gletscher its too medicated but worth a try! what works great is poeschl perlesreuter,a or d
for my lovely “choco schmalzler” jar i started with perlesreuter, rosinski carlsbader (for the chocolate) and then just a hint of elmos the elmos really just needs a bit
then i refilled the jar with frankfurter, brasil a,doppelaroma as base and then chocalicious, jaxons club special, carlsbader, ochsenkopf and a hint of elmos
i didnt mix them all at once but sometimes a bit was left in the jar when i put in new
btw that initial mix (non leathery schmalzler + choco snuff + hint of elmos) was marc1000’s idea
Holy shit @SunnyDay You’re fancy! That sounds like some kind of gourmet meal.
Tonight I mixed some Cafe Noire with some Toque Chocolate in my little snuffbox, and it’s quite delicious, Not quite at your level but it’s simple and delightful.
Toque espesso
:!!
Super Kailash. Smells exactly like a portajon to me.
Which is a crying shame, because I love the nicotine and texture of it. It saddens and confuses me that standard Kailash is so good to my nose and Super Kailash is so terribly bad.
SG Firedance, Hitmaj Black and Temptation Passion Fruit are the ones I have disliked the most so far, SG Firedance grew on me after awhile should have mixed it which has been recommend on here.
@SunnyDay, Plain schmalzler, chocolate snuff, and a pinch of Elmos was my suggestion (http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/comment/448725/#Comment\\_448725). Sorry, @Marc1000.
666 Super Medicated.
@SammyD13 no 666 has a funky scent to it. I would say okay though. I do enjoy the feeling it gives my nose though, feels a little different from say Toque Menthol or Silver Dollar Medicated, at least for me.
@sammyd13 what did you not like about the 666 ? i find it to be very similar to western medicated snuffs.
easy to sniff as all the six photo medicated (and most of all others)
like stoke_about_toque mentioned the 666 for me has a pleasant round cooling effect much like hedges
@willynelson sorry my friend i must have mixed something up! of course it was you! realy good mix i am still making small portions of to sniff as i found it works best for mixing snuff to do small batches, letting them sit can change the aroma and then fixing it by putting in new over old is not optimal
@sunnyday I could take the funky overtone or the medicated blast separately- but not at the same time. I would agree that it’s easy to snuff, though. Never say never, though. Tastes have a way making you cry- and later wiping the tears away. My snuffing tastes are still at the novice level.
Dholakia Sparrow Cool so far. Not much menthol which is cool, because I dont like heavy medicated ones. However, this one just taste like dust for me. Really small amout of nic. Got it for free from MrS, may be stale.
Ozona R and C. Can’t stand artificial fruit flavors.
WOS Chilli Choclate
Poschl Andechs and Poschl Lowenprise
Both horrible snuffs… if they were the last on earth, I would quit snuffing - with no doubt.
SG Firedance, I tried it and didn’t like it, put it away for a couple of years and dumped it immediately after trying it again, smelt like sick, not good.
F&T Bordeaux and French Carotte.
Can’t stand the flavour of the former and just don’t get the satisfaction from nicotine-free snuff, which is the latter. Whatever amount I tried, FC did nothing to fix my cravings. Just like @Humppa said, if they were the last snuffs on earth, I would quit snuff.
Taxi green. Smells of toilet cleaner ‘pine’
This is my review of the worst one I’ve ever tried, She Jasmine
Tin: 10g
Price: $2.60
Source: Mr. Snuff
Country of Origin: India
Blender: Dohlakia
Grind: One step up from powdery. Very fine, but not talcum.
Moisture: Dry, with some clumping
Rating: Can I give negative stars? This gets negative stars.
Marketing Description:
Designed for women this snuff bursts with jasmine
menthol. A lovely floral scent accompanies this lightly mentholated
snuff. Pop one in your pocket, handbag or manbag today.
I’m secure enough in my masculinity to try something branded specifically for women. After all, I like jasmine, I like menthol, this sounds like it might be good. The pink tin underscores the ridiculous marketing dynamic where stuff aimed at women is coded to a very small set of colors – primarily pinks and purples. I’m not sure why I expect India to be woke, but it’s so damn cliche.
The tin note was where I first realized that there might be a problem. If you’ve ever smelled the women-aimed deodorant Secret, you will immediately recognize it.
Undaunted, I went ahead with the testing. Normally when I’m writing these, I take the snuff three times in a fifteen minute period – this lets me figure out how long flavors linger, and to really dig into the subtleties of the product.
Unfortunately, after trying this once, you would need to have a gun to the head of my mother to make me take it again. It’s like they powdered a deodorant stick, colored it brown, and called it a day. This is without doubt the worst snuff I’ve tried. If there’s anything out there worse, I pray that I do not encounter it. There is no jasmine. There is no menthol. There is nothing but sweaty women’s armpit.
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
@TidalWave I like sweaty womens armpits
@TidalWave may be they sent you the used one… by a lady thinking its some kind of perfumed peeling =))
wouldnt be suprised. Cant imagine rubbing my teeth with snuff, yet in India its a thing…
@TidalWave that is the most entertaining review i’ve read in a long time. If you had a snuff youtube channel i would totally subscribe.
@Humppa How strange is the world I like Andechs and Lowenprise very much
@schmalzlerfranzl yes… indeed. The world is strange, I know that many people like the Andechs or the Lowenprise. I just cant stand the tastes. They are bestsellers at Poschl.
@Humppa When we talk about something which involves senses and taste like tobacco or drinks or foods we know that everyone has its own taste and preferences Maybe I like apple but you dislike or vicersa By the way as latins said DE GUSTIBUS NON DISPUTANDUM EST But I really like this thing because we are all different and we have different feelings
The worst one is one that doesn’t have enough of a kick. I hate to do this but I have to place McChrystal’s Mulled Magic in this category. I used it all up because I like clove, but alone it has no kick to it
> If you had a snuff youtube channel i would totally subscribe.
Thanks! I’ve got 15-20 snuff reviews in the snuff section of Simply Stogies/Simply Pipes, I could start crossposting them here I guess. No interest in Youtubing.
I’ll be sure to check them out @TidalWave
McChrystals Mulled Magic.
@FLA I actually quite like that one.
I don’t find Mc’s Sturco enjoyable. But I also don’t like a lot of mint/menthol combos.
Tried WoS jockey club, terrible. Cheap perfume. French carrotte was a short lived experiment. Most sp actually also.
A man of culture I see!
Samuel Gawith - Pinewood Ice… I can get along with just about any snuff but this stuff is hot garbage.
Illustrating that somebody’s worst, could be somebody elses favourite. Crumbs of comfort, I tried once and then threw it away in disgust. I don’t like some minty tastes though; to the extent that I usually use non-mint flavoured toothpaste (some times hard to find).
Interesting question is are there any inherently bad snuffs (just made wrong). I don’t remember the brand but there was a Japanese whisky brand that was universally slated (most Japanese whisky is really good). To the extent that I got a small sample of it just to see. They had taken too much of the distillate fraction and resulted in a nasty burnt rubber note.
Mullins & Westley Keen Scented - not sure if I had a bad tin, but it was like musty baby powder and no noticeable nic hit.
Once again, musty = stale. Have you received it as a freebie, by any chance? If you still have that tin, what is the batch code?
By the way, Keen Scented (and other M&Ws) is made by WoS and is re-named SM snuff of theirs.
No, I actually ordered the Keen’, although since having a known bad tin of another Wilsons’ tin, I feel like I might have had a bad tin of Keen; too late for that one though, as I’d already binned it.
I always like to give every snuff the best chance it has to impress me but 6 Photo Motia for me is like when you throw up and some of the vomit comes out your nose.
Could be dodgy batch, but i just don’t think the Musk agrees with me!
It’s been forever since I’ve had it (Free sample from Nicotine Rush) and I don’t k ow if it still exists, but Sun Shur was my least favorite ever.
Another thread just reminded me - McChrystal’s CBD; absolutely vile.
Instant blockage, the scent was offputting and zero effect from the supposed CBD infusion.
I ordered in Feb this year and note that there is an updated recipe available now compared to the one I had tried, so perhaps the new recipe fixes just how utterly revolting my experience was (I’m not remotely tempted to try any of it again).
I say for me it’s sofar been 6ptoho super kalish!
I don’t get how ppl like it, but I know ppl that do! Goes to show how much preferences can vary.
It reminds me of a urinal cake with menthol and stays forever! I’m already Not big on menthols so it’s a double whammy of wtf:sweat_smile:
Wow i love silver dollar scotch
Duck Soup. I’ve been suffering through a 30g of this overspiced monster simply because it has a useful nic hit. I’ve ordered tubs of Gold Label and Grand Cairo to purge the system. Maybe after 500g of actually good balanced snuff, it will have pulled the 30g of spices out of my internals.
For me, the one I’ve had least success with is Bernard Feinster Kownoer; to me it has the smell of cheesy feet once it gets into my nose. Having said that, snufftaking is a very personal thing; there are people who love it.
Just tried 6P Special. Not again.
FUBAR SNAFU (plain)… though I can’t rule out that I might have got a bad tin.
I’m a relative noob, and have been buying plain, unscented/unflavoured snuffs. I chose this based on Simon’s (ie Simply Snuff’s) review, expecting a powerful, plain, strong snuff.
What I got was weird and unpleasant. At a first whiff it reminded me of the smell of ladies’ face powder - the sort of thing my mother used in the 1960s. But then on top of that a strong hint of sour milk. After a couple of attempts with it I gave up trying to come to terms with it.
Again, maybe I just got a bad tin…
W.E. Garrett Sweet. Just smells like a ground up cigar. Boring.
Its obviously scented a la India style. Plain my ass. I fell in this trap years ago ordering 3 tins of this “plain” snuff only to discover that is scented with indian aroma in the background. Truly disgusting in my honest opinion. Its one of my worst snuffs too. I had left a tin open for months and that background aroma was still there. Not at all plain. Tobacco doesnt smell like that at all. And so damn caustic in the nose. Disgusting snuff.
One man’s snuff is another man’s poison but I expect some here (including me) would agree with Griff’s memorable observation: ‘Many perfumed snuffs are redolent of a whore’s reticule’.
Whether Griff was speaking from experience remains unknown, but in my experience that redolence found fullest expression in Samuel Gawith’s Otterhound. Back in the late sixties/early seventies I bought a wonky hinged tin of this stuff. The cloying stench of cheap perfume over stale tobacco took a long time to eradicate from my olfactory system. Perhaps it was a bad batch but I never bought it again.
Honourable mention also to:
J&H Wilsons Jockey Club (disgusting)
J&H Wilsons Otto de Rose (foul)
Fribourg & Treyer French Carrotte and Patchouli (pretty awful)
Sharrow’s Jockey Club, Royal George (nasty)
Apologies in advance to those who favour any of the above, and I’m aware that your just opinion is as valid as any other. Additionally I eschew all mentholated and gourmand snuffs.
Would you include Mullins & Wesley Jocks Choice among this lot?
I wholeheartedly agree! Cheap perfume, baby powder, and the like have no place in my nose.
Although at some time I’ve tried all the Mullins & Westley offerings (now made at Sharrow Mills) I don’t specifically remember Jock’s Choice or any of the others for that matter – which is good as the snuffs I really remember are the ones that I abhor.
I now only buy directly from Sharrow Mills as it’s so much cheaper than paying London prices for something manufactured in Sheffield. However, next time I visit the London Transport Museum I’ll divert to that tiny shop, splash out and reacquaint myself with their goodies.
