What is the "soap" note in Berwick Brown?

I’m a great fan of Toque snuffs, but tend to be a creature of habit; I find a few faves and stick with them. I just got a new order delivered yesterday in which I tried something new. . .Berwick Brown. I have fallen in love with it. I have seen some reviews that describe it has having a soapy note. What I think some interpret as soapy is what I perceive as an almost woody floral that seems to shift back and forth between wood/leather/flowers. There is an elusive scent in it though that seems familiar to me and I mainly detect it almost at the edge of perception, if that makes sense. It’s like something seen peripherally, and when you look directly at it it’s gone. What it reminds me of is a cologne that I’ve not smelled in a very long time. . .Caswell-Massey’s Sandalwood. Does anyone know if sandalwood is one of the notes in this snuff?

Yeah I get leather and soap scents from it. I don’t get why people describe that as ‘floral’ though to me it brings to mind a leather boot with soap suds all over it

Have you ever smelled saddle soap? What I get is a bit like that. And I’m not sure that the floral is really a floral or something else.

The scent I get is mildly perfume/cologne-like. I think I know what people are referring to but I don’t see it as particularly soapy. I cant quite put my finger on it either but ive never smelled saddle soap. Berwick Brown was the first toque I tried and I went a while without it but now that I have a 25g tin straight from toque and better technique I’m really starting to love this snuff. Sometimes I find it overstays it’s welcome but it’s not particularly cloying to me. I can see why others might not be as fond of it.

It is the Violet in Berwick Brown that I don’t get on with second to the floaty flakes in the grind. I also have some Toque Violet that has been banned to wear a bag and a live in a cell on top of a clock tower.

You get violet from BB, eh? I can’t say that I do and I’m a big fan of violet. . .I like Toque Violet, I like violet candy and one of my favorite men’s fragrances has a definite violet note. What I’m detecting is something else.

Hum, I didn’t find it soapy, kinda musky but not soapy, the one I find soapy is F&T Seville, like baby powder and soap.

I wanna try BB but I’m skeered…

Just got some BB for the first last week and it did not strike me as very floral or soapy - just a very good all day snuff. There again I am partial to highly scented snuff and pipe tobacco so it could be that my nose is not picking up any subtle undertones.

I love to pack my nose with BB. It does have a floral scent to my mind kind of soapy but not in a bad way.

I think what you are detecting is what is referred to as Lakeland essence. It is a botanical and floral mixture which is used in tobacco in Northern England ( and Berwick is definitely Northern). Gawith Hoggarth tobaccos in Kendal use that type of scent in many of their pipe tobaccos.

Just sitting down with a pipeful of Ennerdale. If you want Lakeland essence look no further.

@lunecat I know some too  Maybe rebuilding Hadran’s Wall will appease them =))

Violet, maybe?

I’m not keen on soapy snuffs and fortunately I don’t get this from Berwick Brown which I enjoy very much. The soapyist of snuffs I just can’t get on with is French Carotte.
