Hello guys, I just wonder how much time it takes Toque kind of snuff to release Nicotine and produce the wanted effect ? or in other words how much time I need to leave Toque in the nose before giving it a good blow? Thanks for your help!

S

I don’t blow my nose after each pinch. When I feel the need to clear some space, or if I am changing to a snuff that has a lighter scent, I clean out the nostrils.

But I tend to use 1 or 2 snuffs all day and for the most part don’t use the stronger scented snuffs that last and last…

When I was using snuff to reduce my dependence on snus I would probably have to take 3 or 4 good pinches in a short period of time to reduce the craving. After that it was a matter of staying ahead of the craving. Initially my snuff intake increased dramatically. Over time it has dropped back down but not to the original level. Snuff could be, in my opinion, a nicotine cessation product. If it wasn’t so much fun…

So basically what I did was keep shoveling it in until I was satisfied.

That doesn’t really answer the question though

K

@Slide ya it doesn’t, but it gives me some perspective, though Thanks

A

With experience you will find that, without any conscious effort, that you know when the pinch has done it’s work. If you don’t get a sensation of nicotine delivery at the moment it will be because you are simply not taking enough.

The time to blow is after the upload of nicotine, i.e the point at which no further nicotine will migrate across the mucosa, but there are so many variables it would be next to impossible to put an exact time scale to it for any one individual.

K

@Snuffster I agree you cannot put an exact time scale but I think there is an average like 5 minutes for example…

W

Blow when you need to.

Stefan

K

@Walrus1985Actually that’s what I do, but sometimes I feel I do that maybe faster than the snuff deliver its Nicotine content, hence my question.

K

@Slide How much snuff you use on daily basis ? I mean roughly how many grams per day ? Did you ever have overdose ? Thanks

S

I use 3-5 grams a day on most days. I’ll try to keep track over the next few days and see where it falls.

K

@Slide Until now I can not measure my usage at all … When I was a smoker I could measure my usage easily… and I could stop when I exceed my normal… but now I can not know when to stop

S

@Kougy if you really want to track your usage, I’d recommend going to a head shop and getting yourself a scale. Some are pretty inexpensive and then you could know for certain just how much you use.

S

Yes, I use a digital scale that measures to 1/100 of a gram.

And @kougy I forget to answer the 2nd part of the question… A couple of times, mainly when getting a lot of new snuff in, I have reached the point of starting to sweat a little but that’s about it.

I pretty much maintain a level of satisfaction all of the time.

K

@SnuffinClown I think ya, a scale will do the job, thanks.

K

@Slide I like to maintain a level of satisfaction at all time too, thanks for the information and enjoy snuffing.

Well this is a way you can find out for sure. Take way more than you think you’ll need…and wait… when you start to feel lightheaded that’s likely when the nicotine is hitting your bloodstream. If you’ve take even more than that you will start to feel nauseous. It’s not pleasant but you will know without a doubt how long it takes. I sometimes experience light headedness when I get a new snuff and I am particularly greedy. For me somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-10 minutes.  This tolerance test will also show you how much is too much. Usually I take about 2-3 apple seeds worth in volume per nostril every hour or so. If I take 4-5 apple seeds worth in volume, I get a little light headed. If I take more, or take more in quick succession, I will start to become nauseous. When I first started I was coming off of snus and was always frustrated that snuff didn’t feel like it was helping. I then took too much 6 photo medicated 66 and found out rather quickly how much nicotine snuff actually had.  It wasn’t pleasant but it taught me that yes, there is in fact enough nicotine in snuff. It really is there. Up your pinch dosage @kougy it’s there.

As for blowing? Well I usually only blow my nose before take a meal or before I am switching to a completely different snuff…say before I start a run of Menthol if I’ve been snuffing Toque Chocolate all morning. Sometimes a snuff will cause my nose to run and I will end up blowing only after maybe 15 minutes because I would rather blow my nose then be snuffling. So you can decide to blow your nose when you feel the urge to, if you just snuffed, then blow your nose and snuff again. Just go with your own rhythm.

I seem to use about a gram or 2 a day. This will likely increase as time passes and my experience in being able to take snuff get’s better.

K

@thorgrimnr Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, this hobby really needs patience and daily practice until one can feel satisfied by developing a personal technique which from my readings is sometimes totally different from one to another and there is no such thing as rules just personal preferences!

B

A typical week day. upon waking I load up the nose holes usually 3 heaping spoons in each, then a generous pinch of moist snuff[chew] tuck in the front of my lip.next a large bowl of pipe tobacco something like squadron leader.kick back and put on a percolator of fresh ground coffee ,throw some bacon in the pan set the heat on low, throw together a sandwich for my lunch, finish my pipe, spit out the chew, jump in the shower blow my nose.get dressed get the bacon out throw in some eggs and microwaved cooked potatoes in the hot bacon grease.pour a cup of Joe.

Load up the snuff holes again ,eat ,drink, load up another bowl do some more snuff drive to work. Make some more coffee, fill my snuff holes, work, stop for break use snuff, get back to work, break for lunch make more coffee eat load up my nose fill a pipe kick back, get back to work have some snuff, work till quit time have some more snuff, fill a pipe drive home, do dishes, use more snuff, make dinner fill a pipe.eat, snuff.smoke relax have several more bowls and some more snuff. Type something on snuffhouse, sleep do it all again tomorrow. Snuff =11 + pipe= 6+ coffee=4+blow my nose= 1

K

@basement_shaman Oh my God this is too much Nicotine and many bowls… man you should take care of your health, I did not not see even some sport during your day, you must do some man, enjoy snuffing though

X

You might actually have to wait a few weeks or months of persistance to notice the nicotine. It takes the body some time to acclimate to taking nicotine from a new source, and later to actually expect it from there.

K

@Xander I agree about that and I think your tolerance to Nicotine will be different too because you changed the source.

H

I’m starting to really believe that @basement_shaman isn’t human with a routine like that.

K

@Harlequin ya I think it is really tough rotation and too much Nicotine, but if he enjoys it so be it,

K

@Roderick Actually I stopped smoking without anything maybe more than 13 months ago and I had a big tolerance to Nicotine, I smoked Cigars and pipes too… and maybe 4 or 5 months ago I discovered this beautiful and curious world of nasal snuff and I made my first order from Toque site with 7 flavors  X  25 g tins  plus 3 nasal bullets and I began to work my technique up, but the problem is until now I can not know when exactly or even roughly the nicotine is delivered from your Toque snuff because I think every snuff is different in that matter and as I have this big tolerance so I never feel any buzz even from Toque Quit so I cannot know the average Nicotine delivery time, hence I don’t know when to stop pinching!

S

I really don’t get buzzed from snuff. As I indicated, the times I took too much I broke out in a sweat.

To me it’s not like the first time you smoke a cigarette, or when you smoke one after a long break. Those are the times nicotine gave me a buzz. But that feeling was fleeting and seldom repeated.

I have seen studies that indicated the release of nicotine in snuff was comparable to that of cigarettes, but the study didn’t actually study snuff. Based on that I think the nicotine is completely released in 15 minutes. Your statisfaction may last longer than that though.

@Kougy - a couple of questions for my curiosity…and I will give you the answers that apply to me.

Are you currently addicted to nicotine? (I am)

If you are addicted does snuff satisfy you? (yes, totally. I still use snus on occasion but that is primarily when I can’t snuff or late in the evening)

K

@Slide I was a cigarette smoker for 15 years ( 2 packs+ daily) and I stopped smoking without any substitution about 14 months ago, so I am not addicted to Nicotine but I have great tolerance to it though and I loved the idea of snuff pretty much when I knew about it. Now after I began to snuff about maybe more than 4 months I can not say I felt this so called Nicotine Buzz even one time but I feel good all day snuffing and I care more now about the quality of snuff and the aroma and I put this discussion just to know the right time I must stop or take a break so I prevent myself from an overdose.

S

@kougy I understand. Tolerance is such an individual thing that one man’s overdose is another s pleasure I think.

When I felt bad from snuff it was probably after sampling a new order and taking in a gram or more in 45 minutes or so. Just a guess though. From that experience I do know what is too much for me…the rest has been fine tuning

K

@Slide I think a gram of snuff in 45 minutes is sure an over dose specially if it’s a fine grind kinda snuff… you learn your lesson the hard way keep on snuffing though

S

Normally I go through a quarter gram to 4/10 of a gram per hour with no problem.  So I know a gram an hour = problem.  4/10 or so no problem

But for others a gram in 45 minutes hitting me hard would label me as a lightweight.

That was early in my snuffing experience. However, I have lowered my overall nicotine intake with snuff by limiting my snus consumption.

A

A gram in 45 minutes is not an overdose. Firstly, anyone with a serious snuff habit will do that amount with ease, secondly there are no LD50’s with snuff, no RDA = no overdose.

It is very common for people to start using snuff and assume it is taken by the grain. That’s because when we start we take months to empty a 5g tin. Taking pea sized, regular pinches you end up taking far more than a new user can imagine.

K

@Snuffster Ok I can see that but is a gram of Shmalzler like a gram of Dholakia White for example ??

T

@Snuffster Ok I can see that but is a gram of Shmalzler like a gram of Dholakia White for example ??

lol which weighs more a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks argument…

K

@transistor It seems you did not understand what I meant by comparing a gram of Shmalzler with a gram of Dholakia White

E

A gramme of dw will contain far more nicotine than the same weight of schmaltzer

K

@Eraserhead78 Indeed that’s what I meant by my comparing this two different grinds and nicotine contents.

S

I think you may be overthinking this snuffing activity. No offence meant. Take it until you don’t want anymore Then take some more!!!  If you take enough to feel ill, don’t take that much next time.

My example was a guess on what transpired 9 or 10 months ago. (Although I am a lightweight standing in the shadows of snuffing giants )

As snuffster said you aren’t going to OD on it. Most of the information I read says it would take 60 mg of nicotine to be fatal. That would be in one dose. And that my friend would be one hell of a pinch.

Tolerance is such an individual thing whether it is snuff, alchohol, food…

I have not found any studies that detail the rate of release of snuff. The one study I read leads me to believe the nicotine is absorbed within 15 minutes or so. But that understanding could be a misunderstanding of what they were saying

K

@Slide Thanks for the explanation and I agree with you that OD from snuff is not easy to be done unlike cigarettes and I snuff until I go to bed then I wake up and snuff again, I really like it and wished I knew about it long ago but late better than never, enjoy snuffing

A

I agree about over thinking this. It’s natural to learn about a new hobby/tobacco but the answers you want can only really be found in your own experience. Get as wide a bunch of snuffs as you can and experiment and note how it effects you. So much of using snuff is down to personal perceptions and these are skewed because taking snuff as a seasoned user is very different to taking it as a beginner. Most beginners will not get the full nicotine potential because they take small pinches, that will also affect the flavour you get from it, add to this all of the variables around the different types and you end up in a situation where it’s next to impossible to give hard and cold facts about the experience of taking snuff.

Don’t misunderstand this, we have no problem answering questions because we were all beginners at some point, but it might be the time to start doing some snuffing now.

J

@Slide here is a study done for you to see.

K

@Snuffster Thanks and I am already snuffing my way up

K

@Juxtaposer Thanks a lot, I am reading it right now.

S

@Juxtaposer Thanks for that link!

I

I like to take a pinch as big as I can hold between my forefinger and thumb and snuff it at my leisure over the span of a few minutes until its gone.

I

I can usually feel the nicotine about halfway through. It’s not a buzz mind you. Just a pleasant contentedness

A

That’s is the way to do it. I take my monster pinch in a few seconds but same difference. When I was a kid one of my mate’s had a granny that kept a pinch permanently between her thumb and finger - it would be replaced whenever she snuffed it, she was so expert at protecting it that she could wash up with a pinch in place.

K

@ItsMajick @ Snuffster Until now I did’t perfect my pinch technique so I can’t take big pinches but I am working on it … at the time being I take several small pinches on a row until I get a fix.

J

I think you are being told that taking big pinches IS the perfect technique.

K

@Juxtaposer “imho” there is no rule for perfect technique, what works for you is not guaranteed to work for me and big pinches are not easy for a beginner like me, I am trying non stop though to develop my own perfect technique!
