Is Gekachelter Virginie a schmalzer? It’s definitely somewhat oily/greasy. Is Kloestermischung? Are schmalzers always sweet and flavored? Are there any plain schmalzers? And one other question, why are so many Indian snuff companies “ Photo”? Is Photo Hindi for snuff? And why the numbers?
I’ll let a pro answer about Schmalzers, as I only have a handful. But 6 photo has six photos on the packaging of snuff (I.e can, tub ) I guess it’s pictures of the original founders of that particular tobacco company. Putting there photos in Indian culture may be a way of showing reverence for these people. I haven’t seen 5 photo ( does it have 5 photos? ) and I heard there’s a 41 photo, I don’t know how you would fit 41 pictures on 1 can, they would have to stick a photo insert inside the can ( use it to decant down into a glass jars ) Maybe if the owners looked like this below, they would have more space for ingredients and warning labels or additional artwork
the 41 photo doesnt have 41 images. not sure about the images theory…

@AANYCAARDS the picture is really funny! But thank GOD , I or my forefathers don’t look like this . In Ramayana , a Hindu epic ,Ravan, the demon king has 10 heads and would have been better placed to start a 10 photo snuff brand! The fact of the matter is that when the snuff companies started in India in early part of the 20th century, most of the customers were illiterate , so the easiest way to distinguish one brand from the other was to put the no. Of pictures on the label like 5,6 or 7 photos. With time this photo terminology stuck with the customers & became a pre requisite for a snuff brand Later on other new companies took cue and started using this photo terminology, 21,41 51 & so on but obviously can’t put so many pictures on the. Label.
A really interesting thread. Many thanks to sixphoto and TobaccoLassy.
