mixed drink would have to be a dirty vodka martini with lots of olive juice, olives and a splash of MOSCATO wine…Brew, so many to choose from but I gotta say GUINNESS EXTRA STOUT…plenty of em…cold, warm whatever.  WINE…muscatel, zeller schwartz cat, anything I guess…I must be a lush…but it is fun.

I should mention now that my favorite STRAIGHT booze would have to be a good sour mash bourbon…I love Henry Mckenna, Old Crow, Jim Beam…not a big fan of Jack Daniels, too rough. I guess I do like my booze. But it keeps me outta prison for my likes instead of in older hippy days…nuff said i shall invoke the 5th amendment on that.

Recently got turned on to gin and tonics and I’m pretty happy with that. I do like to try house special mixed drinks when out and about. 

I also like my version of homemade DRAMBUIE and my infamous Pepper flavored Vodka,For the  Drambuie I take dark rum, (McCormicks, distilled in Weston MO, so it is cheaper ) and add some cinnamon a bit mind ya, and some Nutmeg and some sugar, stir it about and voila…cheap guy drambuie. for the pepper flavored vodka, just add some hot peppers of your choice to some cheap vodka and you have it. A tip here for the non alcoholic types like myself who are boozers pretty much…If you buy the fancy boy expensive vodkas…dont bother. you can take a cheap one and pour it into a britta pitcher and do that a few times and the filter will make it every bit as good as the expensive grey goose etc.

My summer brew is apple juice, plus Cezanne Belgian yeast, plus about a week fermenting before bottling, bottle, wait 7 days, and plunge bottles into 190 degree water for exactly ten minutes. This yields a store able (heat pasteurized) bottle of apple cider with lovely Belgian characteristics, fruit, great mouth feel, and tiny bubbles.

I’m currenlty supping Marston’s Old Empire, after watching England fail miserably in yet another penalty shootout. It’s doing it’s job lol.

No booze in my cup right now, it’s tea most of the time. But, I’m a beer guy and I’ve got plenty of favorites so I’ll just post a few. Shiner Bock (New favorite as of this year) Newcastle Brown Ale (Always been one of my top 5) Grolsch Honey Brown Guinness Landshark (Another new favorite) Hofbrau Oktoberfest Switchback (A beer that is brewed and sold exclusively in Burlington, VT I believe. Very, very good.) There’s just a few, I could go on forever.

Presently, Bush b/c its a cheap beer that does not give me headache. I can always go for Newcastle Brown Ale or Red Stripe, when i can afford it. Recently, i’ve tuned into something a lot allready know-Drinking beer at anything (edit:below) cellar temperature is pedestrian and foolish.

Ardbeg. I’ve been enjoying a little too much beer lately and could use a calorie break. I do love the Poet Stout by New Holland Brewery.

In the morning, Sencha or Irish Breakfast. At night, The Root; this is the liquor that root beer was based on.

Right now it’s iced coffee. My favorite mixed drinks are: Snake Bite - Yukon Jack and lime juice Rusty Nail - Scotch, Drambuie, Lemon peel. When I am in a contemplative mood, I just put some ice into a glass of Ouzo or Romana Sambuca and watch the ouzo effect. (The ouzo/sambuca changes from clear to milky white.)

@howdydave i also enjoy Snakebites, and these things called pickled mexicans - jose mixed with a splash of dill pickle juice topped off with a dill chip. Big fan of whiskey gingers and damn near all beer.

I can appreciate that, but I rarely get the really good stuff, and haven’t developed a very discerned palate. I’m happy with a basic mixed drink. But more power to those who appreciate top quality.

Beamish draught, Paddy whiskey, Graham’s white port. Mixed drinks can’t remember, it’s so long time I had one, probably White Russian.

@n9inchnails It’s not for everyone but it’s very good in my opinion. Though it seems to taste better and better as the night goes on.

I’m a Bourbon man myself and my favorite is Fighting Cock. It’s got a real good kick but is also very smooth. Everyone should try it if you can find it, which isn’t terribly easy but it’s 100% worth it if you do. I never mix it with anything because its too good. Since its fall I tried some hard ciders recently too. What I would really like to do is get some cider apples next fall and make my own hard cider. Couldn’t this year cuz our local orchard had a bug or something and hard a very bad harvest unfortunately. They make a apple cinnamon donut there that is the best donut I’ve ever had. Great with a hot glass of apple cider.

I really dig a certain kind of scrumpy hard cider. I just had a nice jasmine tea ginger ale. Probably will drink my Straffe Hendrik (sp?)quadruple in a while.

I’m a whiskey amateur, I’d be happy with Maker’s Mark and 2 or 3 ice cubes. But I’ve had a bit of Glenfiddich(sp?), and some Dalmore. Suppose it may take a while to develop the palate…

@Mr-O like so many great things it does take time to really appreciate nuances. Just hang in there and try a variety of things. To me most of the cheaper things are really only good for mixing/diluting. but for the good stuff diluting is a waste, of $ and ‘base goodness’.

Yeah, I should try more of them, at this point in time I seem to prefer ones that don’t have a very “hot” taste. In my case in general I tend to mix most spirits other than ales, wines, Jagermeister, schnapps or flavored vodkas. I’ve never even bought myself a full sized bottle of whiskey, so my tasting tends to be when a pal opens one up. Maybe I should dive into it a bit more. Would you recommend one or two for something rather smooth but not too pricey?

There’s a dark rose tea that I picked up at my (nearly) local tea shop. It seems between a black and a puerrh in taste, nice. I consider myself lucky to be able to have just 1 to 3 drinks when I do, and not lose control or have any negative consequences really. It’s not my favorite thing to do but it can be nice sometimes. It’s funny because I’m not - by any means- the “poster child” for moderation in all things

Muskoka Harvest Ale. This one comes out every autumn here in Ontario, I’m not sure how widely it’s distributed. It’s a bit heavily hopped for my simple tastes but a nice treat.

You have my sympathies - I was doing exactly the same thing earlier this week. In addition to the lemon/ ginger/honey - which was great - I can recommend Toque Christmas Pudding - the clove in that had an instant effect on my nose and the cold cleared up in a couple of days.

Brewed some Guayusa tea with some dried stevia leaves, and added some lemon verbena leaves for some flavor, as guayusa is rather bland on its own. Its good and I’ll probably continue it this way until the guayusa is gone. I tried it as an alternative to yerba mate but I’ll probably stick with yerba after the guayusa is gone. I sometimes brew the yerba with peppermint leaves and stevia leaves.

About to brew some lemon balm and pineapple mint with some lemon thyme and a pinch of cardomom. I like the stevia too, grew one plant and ended up with two jars full of the leaf, worth the effort…

mixed drink- tough one, i can mix my own drinks (when funds allow for ingredients). i like dry martinis (all varieties), bloody mary, whisk eye (its a drink from my local cocktail bar- evil eye, reminiscent of a sour, with ginger beer) Beer- generally good stouts. theakstons O.P and XB i guess Wine- general quality whites, when its red, merlot. Spirit- this ones neck and neck. its between a good islay scotch, bourbon with a little ice, and vodka on ice (snow queen, grey goose, Chase, 42 below) i guess im in love with alcohol as much as tobacco. right now its a jack daniels, amaretto and coke (godfather, i believe).

Spanish red wine called El Chucaro Tinto, it’s grand for a 5€ bottle. Flavour is little ‘teenagery’ like most of wines at local Tesco Express but it’s good quality cheapo anyway.

I have a botttle of Vietnamese snake voldka ( I think its voldka) with a cobra in it that my friend got me when he went to Vietnam, haven’t had the balls to try it yet though.

@n9inchnails… It is not bad stuff actually. It does pack a wallop however. Went to Vietnam on a medical mission a couple times and found that this stuff is available pretty much everywhere. Theoretically cures back pain and ups the libido. Who knows. Visited one of the ‘farms’ where they raised the snakes. Thousands of cobras and little green poisonous snakes. New Amsterdam Gin. It’s great stuff, fairly sweet and citric, somewhat floral, juniper takes the back seat. At 20$ for 1.75L I think I found a new favorite. I’ll have to try some of the other American offerings. I like the dry British gins but sometimes they can be a little too bitter to just sit down and enjoy a glass, even with ice. Plymouth is one British gin I have to try. They’re just all so pricy; New Amsterdam is a quality gin that costs half as much as beer at the corner store as far as cents per/ mL of alcohol goes.

Made a strong brew of Earl Grey, bout to go out on the porch and sip n smoke my new Peterson with Stokkebye Nougat and some Staubinger sprinkled on top. We’ll see how that goes.

@tybalt, such good taste you have. It’s one of my very favourite malts. The only ‘peppery’ whisky I know. I discovered it for the 1st time whilst on Skye climbing the Cuillin mountains. Lagavulin is still No.1 for me.

Lagavulin is one of my favorites as well. I don’t drink it often, as its a bit pricey for regular consumption, but I try to always keep a bottle on hand.

Just wondering - does anyone out there drink tap water? Personally I do but I put through a filter first. The reason I ask is coz I grew up on tap water but then all of a sudden everyone seems to think that bottled water is somehow superior.

I drink the tap water here in Kalispell, Montana… But you have to realize that there are MAJOR differences in water quality municipality, state, region, country. Some I would stay far away from and some just can’t be beat. I lived in Bullhead City, Arizona for a few years. There if you were to take a quart jar, fill with tap water and put in the fridge overnight, you would find an inch or so of ‘crystals’ sitting in the bottom of the jar… I know, doesn’t sound good to me either - even though the city said the water was perfectly potable… I disagree.

@miamimark Best hangover cure is to drink some more and have a hearty breakfast but if you can’t or don’t want to do that, strong tea with sugar&milk- builder’s tea-is great! @ubert Sure I drink tap water even in restaurants, it’s very good quality here in South Dublin.

i worked in water treatment for 30 years. taste depends largely on hardness of the water (minerals-ca,mg). tap water is more regulated than bottled water. my guess is most bottled water is just tap water that’s carbon filtered —you can do that yourself. removes chlorine and chlorines (taste) in the water. calcium settling to the bottom of a glass is only an indication that the water was allowed to get out of it’s stable pH range and stipped some calcium off the pipe linings.ideally, you want to keep the pH slightly “depositing”–if not perfect. it happens though–i wouldn’t be too concerned. FYI–probably some of the best water you can get is NY city tap water. source is a glacier fed lake --up near maine (i think) when the “dead end kids” ,in the movies, are playing in the open hydrants—they’re getting cooled off with bottled water.

I always enjoy a good cider or scrumpy and a proper gin and tonic is a blessing on the bad days.

love all kinds of drinks. Mixed, prolly a dry xtra dirty vodka ‘martini’ salad with garlic/jalapeno stuffed or habanero stuffed olives. been on a creamy vodka kick as of late though. bloody marys loaded with coarse ground black pepper and original tabasco sauce are good too. brews? hell… love me most of em’. IPA Is great. dark beers too. hell, not to many I don’t like, except maybe the really watered down light variety. I prefer the top shelf types but usually end up with cheap ice beer like keystone or steel. if I’m lucky maybe a 6er of some cheaper mid range stuff. straights, mostly some aged tequilas and whiskeys (scotch or bourbon mostly) the older the better. always neat. Wines, pinot gregio. usually in a 5L box, but I would love to try some top shelf of the style, any suggestions? also some dry red wine is pretty good on occasion as well. Caffiene? cheap black coffee in a cheap french press. maybe some soymilk if im in a hurry to cool it down. also ‘monster rehab’ lemonade+ice tea or the newer pink lemonade+ice tea. basically arnold palmer energy drinks. non carbonated. yerba mate is kosher by me too. Soft drinks? Diet pepsi, awesome hard well water from the countyside, arnold palmers, very vanilla soymilk. Did I miss any for the intro? idk. I’m sure ill post some more beverages later. Currently consuming some keystone ice paired with some WE Garret. Cheap buzz night, lol

Neat - the best way to drink Whisky, even one as strong & peaty as Lagavulin. Now when to try Mull of Oa you will get the origins of the snuff.

I LOVE peaty and smokey whiskys, but they are so far to find (even harder to find for under $60) in the US. I just have a hard time spending that much money on that sorta thing, lol.

@agentshags Im UK not sure what a ‘tallboy’ is, but i love the rehabs, just not so easy to get a hold of in shops here. something i did enjoy was an imported can of monster nitrous. it was so smooth… now its new carling winter berry… crap, but i got them 4 for £2.50. ill stick to zest next time.
