As the ‘stories behind the name’ thread is getting somewhat hijacked by talk of snuff flavours people would like to see (Im probably the main culprit there) I thought I’d make this thread…Make them as exotic or as dull as you like I would personally like to see Green tea w/ jasmine snuff although I had a green tea frappucino in beijing @ starbucks once, which had a really strong flavour! so perhaps powdered green tea like Japanese matcha on its own would work… And also a ‘dusty old 2nd hand bookshop’ snuff I love that smell…
Sassafras.
@ snuffdog…That would be fantastic, I love a good pungent spice like sassafras How about a MARMITE snuff? I could dig that…
I could definitely do a Marmite, if you’re not careful that stuff will grow on you. A sassafras toast sounds good too, don’t think I’ve seen that idea before but it is a great scent!
Gallahers - who I have no idea if they are still in business or make snuff - used to make a mentholated Irish toast called ‘wit and wisdom’. I would love to see Toque produce a very lightly mentholated toast. I also think a floral toast - maybe rose or lavendar - would be nice. The thing for me is that I always gravitate back to simple, traditional snuffs. I’m more interested in snuffs that I can use all day rather than exotic flavours that start to get a bit cloying.
Marmite… now there’s a thought. I’ll have to see if I have a suitably plain snuff lying around that I can try flavouring. No shortage of Marmite in the cupboard I’m afraid Gallahers are long gone and I while I suspect Imperial Tobacco may now have the rights to the name I don’t think we’ll see their snuffs produced again. Just as well we have Toque to bring us a new generation of first class snuff.
Marmite… (whole body shakes in fear)
I can feel a Paddington moment coming on
I’m thinking of the recent Marmite adverts, where Paddington adds a healthy dollop of the stuff to sandwiches at various events with the expected totally positive or totally negative reactions.Link
oaxaca - There is a pipe tobacco named haunted book shop that smells like that I picked up some from Mars Cigar about a year ago. I may try grinding a bit of it up and I’ll let you know. By the way it is best smoked in a cob.
My pleasure! There have been a few adverts in the sequence so far. In the first he was thinking of an alternative to the marmalade, and so it went on. All good fun. Remarkable how they can run a successful advertising campaign pointing out that some people absolutely hate the product!
Yeah that surprised me too. I think Ill see if I can try it, I never had Marmite… Seems like the ad works
I would be really interested in Marmite, or at least a good english BBQ/toast -like American snuff, ‘but fluffier’, plus: Basil, maybe even with parmesan, the sort of aroma from a good Italian deli (I guess that becomes pesto) Corriander, maybe with something else - kinda Tai restaurant Smoked salmon - with maybe a whisky undertone (I like those together Bread - doesn’t sound interesting maybe, but fresh baked bread is lovely Ooh, youve got me started now… TTFN
Oooooo Gimme PESTO any day of the week! Wilson’s do a rosemary so why not a basil snuff. Great idea jonathan! I have to say I find coriander repulsive though so wouldnt be purchasing that one
I can enjoy _ some _ marmite. I bought a jar after I couldn’t find vegemite. I can’t do it on toast, but I do enjoy it to kick up a sandwich every now and then. EDIT: Those Paddington commercials are hilarious.
I must confess, I have never heard of Marmite until this thread. What is it exactly? Is it more of a British thing? I like the above idea of Thai restaurant (though I think we can come up with a better name) I could eat Thai food everyday. Italian sounds good too, how about garlic and oregano snuff? Flower scents I absolutley adore (and are the thing I look forward to most every spring) are lilac, vibernum, gardenia, cherry laurel. These you have to smell to know. I have no idea if they would translate to snuff. I need to try one of the jasmne ones out there as that is a wonderfully sweet flower. When spring breaks here and the flowers are all out I may go on about other ones.
Chilli menthol to get your nose running (and your bottom). I think there are enough fruit, pudding, spread, spirit and menthol snuffs. More interesting would be to introduce new blends, like the F&T snuffs, which get people guessing what the scents are, and not name them peanut guava fritter, marmite & passion fruit etc. Perhaps I am old fashioned.
BACON!!! Hehehehe, got to keep trying.
@ Xander: Yeah I think marmite is probably a British thing. Its yeast extract basically (full of B vitamins), theres no doubt some sort of American equivalent. We have bovril and vegemite here as alternative yeast extracts but marmite is the big one, probably due to the adverts on TV every now and then. People seem to either love it or hate it (I love it). Marmite on toast & a bowl of porridge is my everyday breakfast (unless Im hung over in which case its a fry up :p). And I recommend Wilsons Jasmine to you, I tried it for the first time today and it is STRONG! @sandy: Chilli sounds like a fun one and I also think snuffs are more fun with mysterious names which are seemingly totally unrelated to the ingredients… Morlaix, Santo Domingo, Old Paris, Morocco…F&T have a monopoly on awesome snuff names!
I’d kill for snuff scented like a $500/oz purple indica from Humbolt. You could just call it “Purple”
Just leave your tin open in the field and it will smell like that.
Somebody already told me that Toque champagne tastes like grape, but grape in a metallic purple tin or green apple in a metallic green tin are my wishful thinking flavors. Maybe watermelon too. With my colognes the original “Tommy Hilfiger” might not be too far off for a good one. This afternoon, had some HDT and was wondering what I sprayed on my handkerchief, and Eureka! “Bongo” (red bottle, square, bull drawing, key on a string)
I’m with stitch, but it’d take some explaining if the rozzers caught a whiff of it…
@ stitch: or Purple Haze! @oaxaca: Wilson’s has the best Jasmine, you say? I will put it on my “get next time” list. Thanks for the tip. Marmite does not sound very appealing. If I looked, I’m sure I could find it or something similar in either the health food stores or some of the import shops. I don’t think I have the interest though. Never heard of bovril or vegemite either. I’d taste if someone else had it, but I’m not going to go looking.
Kill me already.
*BANG* @Xander: Sometimes grocery stores (like Wal-Mart Stupid Center) have it in their intl foods isle. I think Wally’s sells Bovril. I picked up my Marmite at a local Publix along with some Heinz Leek & Potato soup… YUMMY! What the heck if purple indica from humbolt?
It’s a type of skunk.
I get that marmite thing now! It’s like saying Top Ramen beef flavor or something right?
Here’s a few: Vanilla Fig Pear Dry Manhattan (Whisky and Dry Vermouth) and for the more abstract amongst us, how about: Rain
@stitch: I assume that by “skunk” you mean Marijuana? If so… who the heck would want that smell in their nose, yuck.
_* CommentAuthor: oaxaca * CommentTime17 hours ago edited whisper# 23 @ Xander: Yeah I think marmite is probably a British thing. Its yeast extract basically (full of B vitamins), theres no doubt some sort of American equivalent._Yup, we have Marmite.
@CSTOKES - some high grade marijuana has a very complex aroma - not talking about the smell of the smoke, but of the mature, unburned buds. If a person has pleasurable associations with this smell, they are likely to find it very pleasing, if not transporting. Roofers love the smell of tar; it smells like money to them. I won’t be making any cannabis scented snuff, as I don’t think this would work with anything but top shelf stuff, and it’s way beyond my means, not to mention illegal. My suggestion was more fantasy than real.
I’m not a marijuana user, but I love the smell and taste of hemp ale. Hemp has a great odor. Actually, I like the smell of wet rope and oakum. Sisal, manilla, hemp all have a nice charm to them. I’ve spent a lot of time around ships, so I guess it smells like money to me too, LOL.
Too bad it’s illegal. I would love to grow it. It makes a fantastic snuff. It’s not as expensive if used as snuff as a little goes a long way. Be warned however, it’s use will lead to loss of interest in other snuffs.
@XANDER You would probably like the snuff I made scented with leaves from the creosote bushes that are very common in the scrub around here. I called it shipyard. I used toque natural for the base, but it could work with a smokey scotch too.
That sounds delightful, stitch. Creostote has a very distinct odor.
I like to see Peanut Butter and Jelly, Mango (maybe the new one from Dholakia, I have not tried), Watermellon, Popcorn, BBQ Steak, Pizza, Apple, Wood Burning in a Fireplace, Perique to name a few.
Toque has a Peanut Butter. Watermelon does sound tasty.
Sweet pea. There are many floral snuffs out there, but none I know of are flavoured with this delightful flower. Toque Sweet Pea. That sounds good. I would like to see some floral Toque snuffs (I prefer floral snuffs to fruit snuffs usually).
Someone mentioned grape earlier. Nicotine Rush gave me a sample vial of Lime & Lemony from Dholakias Temptation line. I noticed they have a Grape Concord flavor too. I’ve been hitting the L&L since yesterday afternoon and not tired of it yet. I’d like to see a straight lime and a passion fruit flavor as I like the tart fruit flavors better than the sweet. A Toque Pina Colada would be awesome. Bacon would be good too.
I’d like to get an orange flavored snuff. But it should be completely orange flavored similar to the wilsons lemon grove. maybe orange grove. Also pumpkin pie and I like the idea of pina colada.
otter
The Toque Champagne has me craving a straight wine flavored snuff. Also would like a more smoky barbeque styled snuff (a toast perhaps). Maybe aged in a charred barrel as they do some of my favorite bourbons.
I’d still like to see a Toque Clove, I could one stop shop then. Stefan
I would love a cotton scented snuff. Sounds wierd, but I have seen some cotton scented lotions that perk my interest.
Ummmm Port? Nudge nudge wink wink. Stitch and Juxt, I watched Pineapple Express last night, and I was thinking along the same lines, just think of what a nice snuff it would make. lol
sandy130674, there is a septic pumping, cleaning & servicing company locally and thats their name: Sweet Pea Septic Service. So I don’t know if I could use a snuff with the same name LOL. But this area has wild sweet peas all over during spring. I know all these guys in the photo, good bunch of people.
If your wanting a unique floral snuff, go with Daphne, it smells amazing. Or Honeysuckle, I made some last summer with Toque Natural that turned out great.
It’s got to be Marmite! Marmite flavoured snuff would be heaven!
Very funny Troutstroker. I grew sweet peas last year, may be I will have to do the same this year. Do you just add the flowers to a jar containing Toque Natural? I’ve heard tobacco absorbs scents very easily.
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again someone needs to make a commercial black pepper snuff. I know I know it sounds terrible. Black pepper essential oil in tobacco is not like you think it will be. It’s a strong masculine floral scent. Hell if you’re afraid people won’t buy a black pepper snuff just name it the mars symbol (the masculine symbol or the circle with the arrow pointing up to the right.) Seriously one of my favorites and although I make a mean black pepper snuff I know roderick or Japp or namrata could make a much better verion. And no it is not more sneezy then a regular snuff. Informal poll who is curious enough to at least try a black pepper snuff once?? Which if you try it once you’ll definatly keep buying (o.k. the men will, it’s the only snuff I’ve made that has ever experienced a strong gender divide.)
I’ll try any snuff once. Even black pepper. Its not one I’d be asking for though. Now, this may sound feminine, but I love the smell of gardenias. Also lilacs and vibernum. I may have mentioned this before, and there probably is a lilac snuff aldready that I don’t know about. The other two flowers are exquisite scents though, but less well known. I could see honeysuckle too. Grows like weeds everywhere here in the spring & summer, but when you walk past it, you know about it. In a related thread, I have been scenting some Toque natural with both lemon and lime flowers (seperatley). These flowers are reminscent of their respective fruits, but only just. They are definatley their own flavors. The lime is not as strong, so I probably would not do that again. The lemon flowers are more pungent and subsequently made a better snuff. Thanks for the tips on how to make this, snuffhouse members!
I have just bought some paper glue made in Italy called Coccoino - which smells exactly like Bakewell tart - a very yummy almondy flavour - I would like a snuff like that very much! Also a more intense lemon - crank up the St Clements to 11. Also a menthol/camphor version of St Clements - kinda O&G but St Clements TTFN
@Xander: That’s a good call gardenia. Not quite Ganga, not quite Sandalwood, but gardenia. My recent thoughts were sweet potato and Honolulu Int’l which I believe is Mango/Pineapple/Coconut. it’s in everything, lotions at the gift shop, lotions at the Walgreens, lotions of the hotties walking around. everything. smell of summer. I could try this if Customs with the Dholakia’s would step it up. I’m thinking Mango Cream + Fubar Grunt.
Yeah you can make a good combo. Is there a Pineapple in the new Dholakia offerings? Hey, how about Avocado? No? Had some sushi with avocado a couple weeks ago. Now the wife is on an avocado kick. She spreads it on sandwiches! Hey, how about some sushi snuff? Oh oh oh and some plum wine to go with it…
Xander, I’d be all up for a lemon and lime flavored snuff, add some guarana to it and you’d have a Mountain Dew snuff! I also think a Tequila snuff would be pretty interesting, add some lime to it and you’d have a margarita snuff!
I would love to see a plain toast from Toque and also a very lightly mentholated one. Ive not seen a menthol toast in years since ‘wit and wisdom’ by Gallerhers became unavailable. We seem to have every flavour under the sun right now, lets have some good old tobacco goodness
@ zzedo310: Lemon is easy enough to come by in the snuff world. Lime is much more subtle, which is probably why there isn’t one (that I know of). Of course Dholakia has just released a Lemony Lime or some such named snuff. However, mine are actually scented with lemon and lime flowers, two different snuffs, not combined. The flowers have a somewhat different scent than the fruits, which is why I wanted to try it. It works, but its subtle, and since the lime is more subtle it was hardly worth the bother. I’m going back to do a second treatment and see if they get stronger. I know Wilson’s has a Lemon Grove, but I have not tried it. I don’t know if it is more like the fruit or the flower. As for every flavor under the sun, snuffster, I get what your saying. I am seeming more drawn to things with unidentfiable flavors. I kind of like the weird names that give you no clue of what it will smell like. I presume they are a combination of various things that work together well.
As we are only a few days away from the 2009 Formula 1 season, how about a Castrol ’ R Snuff?
I vote for the Mountain Dew Snuff and maybe we can get a good Cola snuff. I don’t really like the one that is out there.
Venice Canal Water or Buttermilk?
Puppy dog breath!
Snuff Head, what about burnt rubber for an F1 snuff (we already have Champagne snuff). I think Lewis Hamilton will need some snuff to give him a lift judging by the pace of the McLarens in testing!
I second the puppy breath, and I also think Wet Dog would be a good flavor… You could have different varieties, such as Wet Labrador, Wet Alsatian, etc. People talk about wet dog smell like it’s bad, but i think it’s a very nice smell-- kind of like some of the adjectives that were being used to describe the original Spanish Jewel: mostly things you wouldn’t normally think of as being desirable. However, I doubt there is much of a market for this, so i’ll just have to grind up some of the fur my Lab leaves around the house and add that to a snuff. Oh, and I would definitely take a ginger snuff-- preferably containing actual ginger. The black pepper snuff sounds pretty interesting too. Where do you get black pepper essential oil? What’s a good base tobacco to use for it?
How about organically grown tobacco snuff. I would buy a tub of that.
I plan on trying to make an Earl Grey tea scented snuff in the near future. I would love a good lilac scent, and a cucumber melon one, and a banana one!
@ sandy130674, Lol, The McLarens don’t look to well do they.
I also wouldn’t mind seeing an Oatmeal Cookie or a Butterscotch snuff.
Rum and Coke Snuff. Now that would f*cking rule!
I am begging for a good non-menthol COLA flavored snuff! I just received some Dholakia Cola Champagne and this is one of the few from them I was very disappointed in. No cola flavor at all…
Patchouli. And I’m still adamant on Wet Dog.
and I want Otter
What I would love to see in all seriousness is a bit more blending/experimentation around tobacco types as opposed to more and more added flavours. You just can’t beat the flavour of a well blended natural tobacco, imho.
I was at the zoo a couple weeks ago and they had a thing where you could smell what otter musk smells like, and my girlfriend and I both agreed it would make for an exquisite snuff. Wait, isn’t there a snuff called Otterhound? Both of our wishes may have come true.
I’m with you on that one snuffster.
Amen, brothers.
I would love a horehound snuff. I think I’m going to try to grow some this year, and attempt to flavor some snuff with it.
I love Horehound!
You guys have interesting flavors in mind. Does anyone have a Westie and sniff their paws? It is like corn chip heaven…
Hing and Nag Champa. For scotch snuffs, I’l like to see a Chocolate and Coffee. Tom502
My Chihuahua has Frito feet too!
Oud
I think every dog has Frito feet!
What about some sex flavoured snuff?? Something which can be used instead of Viagra.
I like the black pepper idea. I found a place on the web that sells food grade essential oils the black pepper is like $40 for a 1/4oz so I have not gotten any yet. I am also going to try honeysuckle. I think both would be great.
yes they are.
That doesn’t sound like something I’d want up my nose, Pieter…
Pepper sounds like it would be very sneezy.
Cayanne might be zippy. Tom502
nah pepper isn’t sneezy at all.
LOL Frito Feet!
I find I like fruit, and foods/spices with or without menthol much more than floral or perfume flavors. Tom502
Awa (piper methysticum). Makes a great snuff!
butterscotch
I’m still thinking banana nut bread, pistachio pudding, pear or spiced pear. persimmon or persimmon pudding bread.
Fig Bar.
Latakia.
Tiger Balm Red.
Pepperoni pizza
Sarsaparilla!
I would love a pineapple snuff. But I also agree with the idea of more “tobacco flavoured” snuffs. I’m still looking for a STRONG, pure toabcco snuff, something that will make my eyes water!!
Have you tried Rooster, Pieter? I am also liking this Hollandse Bolongaro snuff. I would like to see more things along it’s line.
Yes, I have seen the Rapa nui seeds for sale. I agree…THAT is what I should be growing here. I need to get my mind off these African weeds ASAP.
Pumpkin Pie.
Snuff with its flavour and pungency derived solely by careful blending of choice tobaccos - and not by the cheap and easy method of adding scents and essences. Very few snuffs are natural, but I would be willing to pay a little more for the extra skill and difficulty involved in its preparation.
I would like to see Wilson’s of Sharrow resurrecting the Fribourg & Treyer that where discontinued.
I agree 100% with you Snuff Head!!
Ya’ know, I was just tootin’ a line of this Toque Whisky&Honey, and I am thinking to myself, mmm, this is so creamy and buttery… Maybe butter would be a good flavor?
my Levi Garrett reminds me of butter too.
Mmmm…what about butter and brown sugar???
I guess I should add the links for the old flavor suggestion threads because there are some good ones there as well. New snuff company needs your input in creating a new flavour Toque Flavour Suggestions?
Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum…
from what I understand not in recent memeories.
There was supposedly one once. It may even still exist. Troutstroker, can you enlighten us?
zzedo310 posted: " Mmmm…what about butter and brown sugar??? " > Got it already…it’s called Buttercup. someone who’s screen name starts with “d” but is otherwise unpronounceable suggested Gingerbread… I’D BUY THAT !!!
what’s in mojito? Lime and spearmint?
As I was going to sleep last night, I suddenly realised how good Lemon and Ginger would be. The fragrance of the lemon and spiceness of the ginger. They work well together in my homemade ginger beer anyway.
@ sandy, I often add a slice of lime to ginger beer. I like a spicy ginger beer, and the lime tarts it up nicely. @dwn…(too long to type your whole name): sounds easy to make. but what kind of mint? I grow 4 varieties. Also what kind of rum? dark, light, other? I suppose I could look this up on wikpedia or something. I grow limes too. I can probably make it with what’s in the house now.
This one does not say what kind of mint leaves: 1.25 oz Captain Morgan® Original spiced rum 12 mint leaves 1 tbsp sugar 0.5 oz lime juice 2 oz soda
@Xander, tried using lime instead of lemon once and I didn’t like it. However, when I make a Moscow Mule (Vodka, Angustora Bitters, lime juice, ginger beer) the lime works very well with the ginger beer.
Moscow Mule, eh? I’ll try to remember that one. In Bremuda there is a popular drink called Dark and Stormy, Ginger Beer and Dark Rum. Not bad.
I made a few Dark & Stormy’s a few months ago. Not bad enough to pour it out, but not good enough to drink them again. Although the leftover Ginger Beer was good.
i’ve had good ones and bad ones. that crap Bermuda (Barretts or Bartlets or something) ginger beer is actually the worst for making them. Its sweetend with saccharin and has that nasty diet soda aftertaste You need a good ginger beer and a good rum. I don’t really drink them though. Just every couple of years.
Guinness! Or bluebell.
@Spam: Check out McChrystal’s Hop snuff, or the Blender’s Bundle that Snuff Store carries. Snuff Store is currently out of the Blender’s Bundle, but I’m sure that they will have some more soon.
Blender’s Bundle and Hopfen are both top snuffs! Both of them bowled me over with how good they were.
I’d love to see a Guinness flavored snuff. While I do like McC’s Hop snuff I find it to smell a tad bit soapy. It is still enjoyable though.
Brazilian Caipirinha (with cachaça not Rum) the best drink ever !!!
I hope a Guinness flavoured snuff would have more flavour than a pint of Guinness. I used to drink it all the time, but went off it. I had some the other month at a pub and I was quite shocked how bland it was. I think they must have dumbed down the recipe. Seeing as roast barley is the flavour consitiuent of stout, I imagine Samuel Gawith Black Coffee would be a good substitute.
Pale Ale might be an idea.
The aroma of pale ale is predominantly hops and as there are hundreds of different hop varieties, each with different aromas, it would be nice to have many more named hop snuffs. A Toque hop snuff would be good.
Watermelon. Is there any watermelon snuff? And books. I love the way book smells.
Very old thread for the archives. Current discussion of this topic is here: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/7027/if-you-could-scent-a-snuff-what-would-it-be
