I ordered some snuff bottles from Ebay recently and the posted photos of them I will have on here. I have a number of containers at home I have the snuff in as well I guess I need some sort of shelf for them. The chinese snuff bottles are very nice and I wont ever carry them with me. Way too nice for that. Tins and snuff bullets will do nicely for that. Anyone who has a snuff mull for sale, let me know. Wife would most likely kill me in my sleep for that purchase.

G

Those are some nice bottles, Congrats Sir.

M

Baby food jars, sans baby food label, plus snuff label. They work out very well, are cheap, and seal up fine. One jar, I had the lid on so tight, I had to use my pipe wrench to get it off.

G

I being a very frugal, no make that very CHEAPSKATE kinda guy have had to make do with lots of things and being a former civil war reenactor of the confederate variety have made items for myself to use in the field. Canteens, kepi’s, shirts, (pants were a big disaster ask anyone at that event…mooned the crowd, crying women and children and laughing men everywhere) uniform coats, (now these were not of the best variety or make, homespun comes to mind. and yes I did all of the items without plans since I am that cheap. Even made my leather cartridge box…way too big, so I called it the sharpshooter box which is was the right size for. Ok, I went online to see about getting a snuff spoon, DAMN, they want a lot for them. AHA says I , I will make one. Which I did and rather easily so I will share it for others who are not rich genty either. I went outside and found some of my rosebush cuttings since I cut the roses back. I cut off a small pc about 4 inches long and found that the inside when cut at an angle has a core or ‘pith’ to it, it is rather soft in nature the ctr part and so I scraped it out and used a nail file to round off the end of the spoon area and by golly the thing works great. It may look very rustic, but hey, saved myself about $8 so I can afford more snuff. Roderick, better hire some more help son…

@matsnuffs In baby food jars? Thanks for such a GREAT IDEA!!

S

baby food jars are the best thing ever for snuff. Get apple sauce, eat it, wash the jar, and you’ve got a perfect air tight container. I’ve got like 20 baby food jars in my snuff drawer. For carrying with you, I love the Patrick Collins wooden snuff boxes.

J

A few bottles, most of them loaded.

A

Old WoS jars for loose stock, old claret wines cases and Indian carved boxes for the tin collection. Decanted as needs be into a bullet and a couple of silver boxes. Ive always been surprised how few members seem to use snuffboxes, for me its 50% of the fun.

T

That is such an excellent idea. I need to try using baby food jars for snuff storage! Though I wouldn’t mind having one of those Bernard’s snuff bottles.

T

All my snuff is in a military ammo can, with cardboard dividers.

G

Try looking up on EBAY auctions ‘chinese snuff bottles’ some of them are quite ornate. I bid too much on a couple of them and won. WIfe was none too pleased, but it was only about $6. Watch carefully for shipping costs, there are a couple of them who charge NOTHING at all to ship from china or hong kong. The three i posted photos of cost me total of $15 for the lot of em, 3 seperate auctions. Dont be afraid to only bid up to $4 I did a couple of times and I won the pretty bird covered bottle, think it was total of $4.25. They are pretty nice but I dont think I would ever use them for daily carry situations. If you do know someone who hunts blackpowder, get the percussion cap tins, perfect snuff tins. OR for a bigger one, get a civil war reenactor to give you an empty MUSKET cap tin…hold at least a can of W.E.Garrett sweet, 30gm lets say. Not sure how tight they would be, though, percussion cap tins are excellent. ALSO I think that the sewing stores still carry these nice wooden boxes made for pins, I use one and the thing only cost about $3. Good luck, thanks for posting the really nice photo of the snuff containers on a shelf. That was very nice. I am jealous!

S

I keep all snuff in it’s original containers, in ziplock bags, in kilner jars. I know that seems a bit excessive but keeping my snuff fresh and uncontaminated is it’s own reward. I use about 3-4g on a normal day so I fill up several small WoS tins with my favourites and a few new ones to try and that usually lasts me a week.

N

I have about 25 kinds of snuff scattered throughout the house and all the rest are in freezer bags inside a bin liner in a chest freezer. The bin liner is about half full.

G

I like the idea about keeping it in a container, then a ziplock bag. ALso the idea about storing in the freezer makes sense. Keeping coffee grounds in the freezer works great too.

M

I like keeping them in their original tins for the most part. The only exception is keeping a bit of Himalaya in a bullet for taking some to work.

@ graybeard19: The middle top one in your photo is just like the one that I won in a the historical contest a few months ago. It was provided by Dholakia, and I presume is of Indian manufacture. It screws tightly and holds a few grams.

G

Hi everyone, I am indeed a very fortunate man, for a lot of reasons. Today I got my first of three chinese snuff bottles. My memory is not as good as once it was. But I think it was about $5, that includes the shipping, which was ZERO DOLLARS. You can see it in the top of three photos I uploaded on the top of the page. This one is the one with the fish a coy which is chinese good luck symbol I believe. It was supposed to be an old one, made of coral. I thought…"uh huh, sure it is…chinese red plastic, coral red. I got it today, opened said package took it out and lo and behold IT REALLY IS MADE OF CORAL AND IS ABOUT ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. Damn, says I, what the heck??? I may be from northern Illinois near chicago and the corn fields but Damn if it isn’t really old and made of coral. This thing surprised the hell outta me. Weighs I think about 3 oz. As much as two empty glass shot glasses. holds, MAYBE 5 gms of snuff. I gotta get the back of it translated. All kinds of chinese symbols there and I for sure enough can’t decipher that stuff. I guess what I am trying to say is. EBAY has a boat load of these snuff bottles and some of the are sure enough the real deal. If Anyone wants to get the ebay seller who sold me this, I would be happy to pass that along. This guy is not only righteoud and honest. But did not charg me anything for shipping even though I am sure he wanted more out of his auction. My address is graybeard19@yahoo.com if you care to get the ebay seller’s name etc. I am honored to have such a fine snuff bottle in my possion. I will not be buying any more, even if they are over one hundred yrs old. Here is what it looks like, this photo does it justice. By the way, I think that the chinese have it right. A coral etc bottle is the way to go. this one holds I think around 5 gm, So it will not get stale, etc. Hope you like it.UPDATE…I think that this bottle holds LESS than 5 gm, I dont do all that much ‘snuffing;’, but it is already empty. ALTHOUGH…less is better, I mean if it does not get stale, better right? I think that the volume is due to how it is made and what it is made of…all in all, great container.

G

Update on my coral snuff bottle recently bought on ebay, I had it translated and sure enough this is what it said Made with genuine Water Buffalo Dung Scented with monkey piss may make you sneeze alot Keep buying my snuff you round eyed devil Buy my snuff, YOU PAY CASH I was stunned, not what I thought it would translate to say.

E

I’m loving the red one… I’m still new to snuff so sadly they are in their original tins in a ziploc… It doesn’t do them justice one bit.

G

My wife and I went to an estate sale locally and I found for NINETY CENTS ( all I had in pocket ) a very nice chrome plated container about 4 inches long, by 2 1/2 wide, by 1 1/4 inch tall, hinged top. I imagine that the old lady used it as a soap container for traveling? not sure. But one thing for sure. It is ideal for carrying about 25 gms or more of snuff, Or as I am going to do, leave it on my computer desk with the pumpkin pie spice blend I made from 2 tins of garrett’s sweet and spice in a emptied tea bag. It is fairly nice, but I have so much of it, it should take me a yr to use it all. I will try to post a photo of it.

S

Nothing wrong with the original tins Eric!

A

I just keep the bulk drums in fridge and large tins in 2 paper bags on bookself and smaller tins on bedside table.

B

I keep bulk in Mason Jars in the dark basement root cellar, extra tins taped at the seams and on the shelf in the closet upstairs, and rotation tins in a drawer in the dining room close to the table. And bulk hidden in buried mason jars in assorted locations in the back yard where only I know of the location.

K

Way to go Bart! I thought I was the only one with buried treasure.

X

@Bart: I bet the bees saw you bury it. As soon as I finish learning their language I will prise the info out of them.

V

Old minibar from the 70s with a flip-down lid.

B

@k5btp I have a metal detector that the kids have a lot of fun with in the back yard searching, haha! And Xander, Royal Jelly is what you want from the bees, not honey…that’s where it’s at!! They are under my control. I give them Dholakia White, and they give me jelly…even stephen

J

I have some snuffs over a year old in there original containers that despite being a little drier seem just fine to me

G

I have a shelf unit I scrounged from the 7up bottler that is about 2 ft by 16inches wide and 3 ft tall, I have one whole shelf full of old tins that I have gotten over the yrs. it has all kinds of lil containers in them. I love the christmas holidays because the dollar tree has xmas tins for a buck and I always grab a few for things like this. It is getting to the pt of ridiculous how much I now have. Best guess 1,000 or more gms. Now that is a bit much. But it sure is fun. I dont think I shall run out this spring. OH,one of my favorite tins is a Smith bros cough drops tin, and yes I have my TOQUE menthol in it. When that is empty I shall be getting 500gms of some Wilsons medicated variety…I have one I dont think I could afford to fill up. It is a NEW unused, or at least I hope so…Thunder Mug as we call them in the midwest. I think it would hold easily a kilo of snuff. TOO MUCH and too costly.

A

In an ancient urn of grest thickness lodged in a window seat, serving to protect the flavour and savour of my tabac d’etrennes from Fribourg’s.

M

I have my Toque tins in their original ziploc bags, which are inside of airtight plastic bags, separated into categories to keep contamination to a minimum. The bags are in a laptop case I had laying around here. I sorted my homemade snuff into different types of plastic bags, and all of them are inside of an old backpack, together with the stuff I’ve bought locally. The snuff for everyday use is inside of glass vials and plastic boxes.

L

The Snuff Bar:

M

@LincolnSnuff , can I live in a cardboard box next to The Snuff Bar? I promise I’ll be clean. Jokes aside, I’m greatly impressed. I hope I can end up with a collection like that in not too much time, and that drawer looks like a chinese medicine box. It’s really beautiful.

J

That;s the way to do it man!

A

Menna, Im in that box, find your own.

O

I keep all my snuff in airtight baggies, in their original containers, in a larger airtight container, at the bottom of my fridge. This seems the safest way to keep it fresh long-term (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong ) It’s getting out of control now though. There’s more snuff in my fridge than food!!! I keep about 40 different types in a bag next to the coffee table for easy access when I want some variation. They’re either in their original tins or smash boxes, each also inside their own air-tight baggie.

M

@snuffster , sheesh, it looked like a lovely place to live. Well, how about we share it? That way the rent would be cut in half. What do you think? @OscarWabbit , that’s what I call being careful! They must be really fresh (LOL). Well, I’m sure keeping them cold is a good way to stabilise them (though you have to be careful not to make the liquids separate from the solids, but a normal fridge’s cold is probably OK). I guess I’ll do it too when I have a fridge of my own.

G

I keep mine in a old steamer chest sitting beside the wood burning stove.

B

gimpy you should never steam snuff.

R

Love the shrine, @Juxtaposer

J

Thanks, and that’s just my bottles. And Bob…never say never.

M

Oh, I had forgotten about the older comments. I love the arrange of the room, @Juxtaposer , everything is just perfect. By the way, what are those things hanging from the ceiling? @Gimpy1261 , doesn’t heating it make it lose some aroma? I guess it must get at least warm when the stove is lighted, though I might be wrong.

O

@Menma hahahaha. Well what with the current persecution of tobacco I want to have a sizeable collection, just in case more countries impose PACT-like laws and internet buying becomes more difficult. Hopefully will never happen, but I like to play it safe. e2a: well that’s my excuse for being a hoarder, anyway. :)) The collecting different types is much of the fun. That desire to try them all. :))

M

@OscarWabbit , I’m like you, I gotta catch’em all, but I’m just a student without a job. At least I hope the American ones don’t disappear before I can get hold of them. Also, we could create a black market if other countries start imitating USA. They can take our freedom, but our snuff will never disappear!

T

Most of it is in glass jars in the fridge, but some of it is in assorted smash boxes, and snuff boxes, some times I’ll stick a bit of orange peel in a box over night

H

One of my late grandfather’s cigar boxes.
