What did you do during this arctic weather in America?

G

I, for one, snuffed A LOT. I also ate a lot of great wintry foods my wife made-- Belgian stew, pork pie, rolladen, and others… I took care of our rooster and hen-- who decided to hatch 8 chicks week before last. We ended up having to bring the following indoors — 10 chickens total, 1 85 lb English foxhound Daisy, 3 Maine Coon cats-- Flo, Frielich and Moe. So all-in there were 18 bodies in this little house! I got 4 of our transport drivers out of Michigan and Indiana who’d been frozen in for 3 straight days— that was no small task. I successfully insulated our 100 year old well and it DID NOT freeze-- so I was really stoked about that. And I chatted some about snuff and pipes with you guys.

S

I loaded up my car with snuff and pipe tobacco and drove to Florida . Stopped at JR along the way and bought some more

G

@Snuff Hunter Which JR you stop at?

S

Selma NC Exit 97 off of i95 They had around a dozen types of dry snuffs available below is a list that I can remember they might have had some more Dental plain Dental sweet Navy sweet Navy. Plain Railroad sweet Railroad plain Rose tube Peach Square Garrett sweet Garret regular Society

M

hauled wood, shoveled snow, slept, hauled wood, shoveled snow, slept, hauled wood, shoveled snow, slept. See the word ‘slept’ a few times and it starts looking funny.

G

@Snuff Hunter I live only 7 miles from the Statesville NC one Yup, get all my Scotches there as well as any pipe tobacco that can be imagined

B

WoS Winter Warmer WoS Chili Chocolate Doolali Tap and for really cold days Bohica

T

Well I live in San Francisco, so the weather is never freezing, just cold and damp year around. I did receive a 50g tin of Moro Moro snuff among other snuff.

S

Just work, work work… It is winter after all and cold is part of that… Oh and the ol woolies were a good idea!!!

V

I am not living in America, but we do have cold winters in Poland sometimes. There is nothing better than schmalzlers in these days of ice and snow. But this year it is different. It snowed once in November, and in Christmas it was about 10 degrees Celsius - while usually it is minus 10 degrees Celsius … But I do not complain. I hate snow, ice, all the Winter stuff.

H

I was sick with bronchitis for 4 weeks…

N

^ have you tried smoking mullein, the stuff does wonders for your respiratory system

G

^ True that— also good for ear infections!

H

Sat around and enjoyed frozen pipes and sewage. Had the heat on full blast. Also hick plumbers who tried to fix the frozen plumbing by plunging it like it was clogged. I won’t turn my heat on anymore since pipes froze anyway, nothing burst, and the leasing company didn’t do anything. I just wear a jacket inside. Baseboard heat sucks and I don’t feel like paying 150+ a month to heat a one-bedroom apartment.

M

Plowing endless snow in Northern Colorado, a.m., p.m., early, late, on the old john deere, burning diesel, breaking shear pins on the 7ft blower, leaking hydraulic fluid, adding more from the heated tack room in barn, snuffing Dr. Rumney’s, Swami, Bijli, Golden, , then switch to F&T snuff, any one will do… then back out to plow snow. It’s only january, but I’m totally sick of winter. It’s like 6 months long here, and if wasn’t so beautiful, it would really suck.

B

On the 8th, coldest day so far, I didn’t go outside but been out in it since ,dress in layers and hope you don’t have to pee.

G

Well my fellow Americans… seems we’ll be in for another spell of it soon enough-- hunker down

H

Oh you have got to be kidding me? I have barely been able to breathe with the cold air. Once it hits 40°F I can’t even walk at a brisk pace without the air destroying my lungs. I am just starting to get relief and it is coming again?! Staying inside does not help either because my heating unit dries the air out so much in the house that it screws with my lungs to the point of I start every morning by taking a nebulizer treatment! Sorry, I had to get that rant out…Winter is not kind to the severe asthmatic…

V

Oh you have got to be kidding me? I have barely been after to breathe with the cold air. Once it hits 40°F I can’t even walk at a brisk pace without the air destroying my lungs. 40°F is 4°C - I wish we had such a warm winters in Poland.

H

Oh dear gods…I’d have to walk around with a respirator on just to keep my lungs from collapsing.

M

Lots of houseplants helps humidify the air. We dry our laundry on a rack next to the wood stove, that helps, too. Lots of water where I live, a lake 2 blocks to the south and the ocean 2 blocks to the north; if anything too much humidity is a problem here. Have you considered moving to a climate that wouldn’t test your lungs so severely?

H

I have considered it but even if the funds were there I would not want to stray too far from my children.

F

hang on… these americans have been whinging at -30 and -40 degrees? no wonder they never usually specify its farenheit. whats everyone complaining at? -4C isnt that bad.

N

Oh you have got to be kidding me? I have barely been able to breathe with the cold air. Once it hits 40°F I can’t even walk at a brisk pace without the air destroying my lungs.

Then you should stay the hell out of Canada! It’s already been as low as -32 degrees Celsius (that’s -26 to you yanks) this year and with the wind chill it was more like -40 and that’s in Southern Ontario and its ALWAYS colder in February. -4 degrees is a warm day in winter. And they aren’t whining at -40 there whining at 40. I remember a couple years ago California got less than 1cm of snow and there was on average a car accident every 10 seconds

G

I stalked, killed and ate a giant Polar Bear. Then I woke up and took a hot shower and had a big snoot of IHT 22

F

And they aren’t whining at -40 there whining at 40. I remember a couple years ago California got less than 1cm of snow and there was on average a car accident every 10 seconds

I realise my mistake, I shouldve checked haha. 4C! thats even warmer!

V

5 minutes ago in Poland. I hate snow.

G

@n9inchnails @Firestarter0 simply meant that it’s unusually cold this year in America is all apparently, you have colder weather regularly-- understood. no one “whining” or what not, it’s just not the usual weather in America this Winter and some people very unprepared for it-- so I thought it would be interesting to find how fellow yank snuff takers here were dealing with it.

H

Actually General, I was totally whining. I admit it.

G

@harlequin Understood of course I just meant that I didn’t start the thread as a “whine”

I

So far it has been unususally warm here in the SW corner of the USA, it was 50F (10C) and sunny, so I walked the dog over the lunch hour. Winters are really dry here so I tend to either smoke a pipe or stick to schmalzlers.

T

California has also been having an unusually warm spell. It’s been about 75 F for the last couple of days in San Francisco, which would be considered a warm summer day in San Francisco. I’ve been out and about with just a t-shirt, and I’ve seen other with shorts and a t-shirt.

V

21.2°F in Poland now Now it is common winter I’m laying in my bed covered with quilt, drinking hot tea and snuffing Elmo’s.

V

3°F Man

V

@Roderick, no, I live in Bydgoszcz - 360 kilometres north from Kraków. In Kraków is much warmer today, ~21°F. And yes - commieblocks are in every single Polish city. They look pretty much the same, despite some few small differences, but they are all big, simple modernistic cuboids. 18 million Poles live in those. Commieblocks are just housing machines .

B

Staying indoors and doing some long neglected pipe cleaning. The down fall of a large pipe collection , Well I got 8 done and left some cake. now my bowls are much wider and tastier also, only 50 or more to get to. Dam this P.A.D.

M

Northern Colorado has been well below freezing lately, and I’ve been plowing snow it seems like every day, for the last week. Well, really since November. I’ve been drinking lots of coffee, taking tons of snuff, playing guitar, working at my job shipping and inventorying art on paper. Trying to enlarge my snuff collection, rehydrate some vintage Wilson’s Dartmoor, Cyprus and Tom Buck. Practicing w/ girlfriend to play at local open mike night.

P

Enjoying the wonderful weather. Don’t you all snowboard? B-) Unfortunately, snowboarding is the only time I don’t snuff. It just makes a mess. Snus fills the gap.

N

18°C in Greece, Ahhhhh i miss so much to see snow, last time that snowing well for 3 days with no stop was 1987 i remember that, after that snow, it snow only for one day of 365 and for few hours, what happened to you Mr Winter?

G

Supposed to get another foot dumped on us tonight Will make work hella stressful for sure! BUT I’m still looking forward to it. Snow is no big deal in most places but it is here— everything shuts down as we don’t get much snow and the state is ill-prepared to deal with it… anyhow, after living/working/driving in upstate NY for 4 years about a decade ago, it doesn’t bother me-- so it’s nice when the southland shuts down and wife and I can have our run of it without hardly anyone around

C

Sat outside on the porch, grilled a lot, smoked meats and my pipe, went hiking camping, basked in the sun, worked on my truck…oh artic weather you say? Did i forget to mention i live in the desert we have no winter to speak of much less artic weather. sorry fellas but i lived it up for you all in your names, i promise.

H

Not only does the cold weather suck but I really think snuff is less enjoyable in the winter. The dry cold air makes my nose so much less sensitive.

Ditto virtually everything, I’m not married but besides that I could’ve written it myself. It’s nuts, we’ll have 2" of snow predicted and people are buying up milk and bread like it’s Judgment Day. Love it because nobody knows how to drive in the snow so people can’t make it to work so I get called in for extra hours because I live just a couple blocks away. Snowtime overtime as I like to say.

U

I love snow, but never seen snow in my life time
