I can’t find the answer to this one now if I knew my history I guess I could work it out . Common since says the cig came first in the form of rolling tobacco but did it ,it also makes since that snuff did as back inn those days they shoved anything and everything up their nose to see what effect they got lol someone here must know the answer
Snuff has been around much, much, longer than cigarettes. Indeed, snuff was the form in which tobacco was initially used when it was introduced to Europe (continental Europe that is, it was more commonly smoked in a pipe in England). Cigarettes only became popular (outside of Spain) in the latter half of the 19th century after the Crimean War.
In the Americas both were in use when Europeans arrived. Chewing tobacco was also. No cigarettes per se, but cigars & pipes were used. However, archaeological evidence indicates that snuff taking predated smoking.
Cigarettes didn’t become popular until the introduction of the safety match.
Adding to the history of cigarettes, World War One made it even more popular among soldiers fighting in the trenches.
Thanks everyone that’s what I love about this forum . The willingness to help and the knowlage . I think I’ll try get a book about snuff today . Should make interesting reading .
Everything I have ever read says that snuff pre-dated cigarettes. I believe snuff came first, then the pipe, then cigars, and finally cigarettes. There’s a very interesting book on the history of snuff, I have a copy around here somewhere. If I can locate it, I’ll share some of the stories in it.
That would be great @ smokey
Snuff Store (see ad on the right) have Snuff by Ursula Bourne in stock at the moment.Snuff Book. Haven’t read it but it might be of interest.
Xander seems to be quite right here. Archeologists state, that chewing tobacco was the earliest form of tobacco use, but of course, this might change with newer findings. And also of course, it´s easier to proof, due to the effects it has physically, than snuff intake. Tybalt is accurate, that the cigarette rose at the latter half of the 19th century and was boosted by the machinization of cigarette production. The ultimate breakthrough came with WW1, first by the french, as far as I know. But it spread very quickly in all the trenches, being it german, english or russian. The soldiers brought their habbit back home. So, itsuke is also right with his point. Well, all the points made by others in this toppic are right as well…
I don’t know, but I could see chewing it 1st, then pipes. The idea of grinding tobacco into powder and sniffing it… seems that idea would come later than from primitive man, or non-semi-industrial peoples. But I’d think there could be a tracking down of the earliest written or carved documents of tobacco usage.

The Yanomami do the same with Tobacco. They chew it as well, making themselves possibly the first multi-tasking Nicotine addicts in history.
cigarettes couldn’t have come first. To make a cigarette you need a certain type of tobacco (white burely I think) and a certain curing process which didn’t come along till well after tobacco use. In fact the indiginous use of tobacco that the europeans encountered wasn’t cured, actualy the orignal curing process was discovered accidently in shipping to europe. The sailors hung the leaves over the side of the boat and air curing was invented because they discovered it removed alot of the nasty taste of uncured tobacco (never tried it but have heard it has a very fecal taste and smell).
For an interesting read on tobacco, I suggest this book, tells you exactly what you want to know about tobacco and more:Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization by Iain GatelyThis is a very slim volume, contains only 32 pages, but it is packed with information about snuff. Correct me if I am wrong, I think this is the most recent book published on the subject of snuff (1990): Snuff by Ursula BourneThere are secondhand copies on amazon.com for these two books, but always check with half.com as well. The latter offers cheaper shipping, and their prices might be lower than those on amazon as well.
