What are you paying for snuff...

Just thought it would be interesting to see what people are paying for snuff - both online and on the 'high street. For example… I just bought some Gawith Apricot (Poschl) - from SnuffStore £1.60 (plus of course postage - but I bought lots so not such an issue), my local high street tobacconist (in Chiswick West london UK) - £1.90. I popped into G Smith in Charring Cross Road - £3.20 The great thing about online stores is that you can compare prices. I don’t mind paying a bit extra for convenience, or good service, and I don’t begrudge anyone a living, but that is quite a price difference… Anyone else seeing those sorts of price differences? Jonathan

Consider the extra overheads a real shop has, then it’s position. I do think G Smith & Sons prices are high, but with it’s location almost on the geographical point of the Capitol’s centre. Their rates will be sky high.

To me the most important consideration is not price. It is freshness. If you figure how long it takes to use up a box of snuff it is just pennies a day, but as with all addictions, enjoyment should be paramount.

I pay 7$ for 25g tins WoS, F&T and Toque. They are all in one price. 4.6$ for 10g tins and plastic boxes Samuel Gawith, Gawith Hoggart, Toque. 5$ for Dholakia 10g boxes. 4$ for the delivery. It is flat rate too.

I agree with Nachman - I went to G Smiths a while back to get some Robby’s Top Mint as it was one of the only places still selling it. As per usual it cost at least twice as much as anywhere else (overheads, blah, blah) but it was also extremely stale. To be fair, they exchanged them for some of their own brand snuffs, plus threw in a small tin to compensate my transport fares there and back, but they really should have checked that the stock was still fit to sell. It’s not as if they have a massive array of snuff there anymore.

The only time I buy from shops now is when I get my Wand H SP No 1. It must have some local following as its always fresh (also vacuum packed) apart from that I only ever buy bulk online. As I always say, most little cans just hang around and are not that airtight anyway; the result is almost always snuff that is less fresh than a bulk buy. The downside of that is that its hard to build up those massive collections that a lot of you go for buying in bulk; it only works for me because I only use two or three types of snuff. But if you do have a real favourite get a pound or half pound straight from the manufacturer and see how snuff should be. And the thought of Smiths almost brings a tear to my eye remembering what it was like 30 years ago…

When I’m home I get medium WoS tins, SG and Gawith Hoggarth containers for £1.40 from Greens in Leeds. F&T tubes are £3 and the Poschls are all different prices, £1.15 for Red Bull I think.

Around here, the selection is pretty lousy. A 1.15 oz American snuff is about $3.50-$3.79. On occasion I have seen them under $3.00. Some stores charge different prices for different brands, some charge all the same price no matter what brand. Generally the selection is so poor its not worth my time to look anymore.

The only thing available locally is Poschl/Ozona which runs about $5, I’ve seen a few American brands at $3.75.

Poschl/Ozona is available for me at about 2.60$ At local stores. Quite a big price for you.

For Pöschl’s it is $3.89, or about £2.37 according to google. That is the price for all of them, including the Ozona 5gram tins. BTW, how does one make a “£” on a US keyboard? I know someone here knows how.

Ah, Thanks bigblue. Edit: also, a quick search on google, and I found that ALT+0+1+6+3 yields £

or alt 156 £

If it wasn’t for online sellers, most USA snuffers would really be missing out. In some parts of the country, scotch and sweet is obtainable, but very rarely more than WEG and Garettes . Probably 99 percent of that is consumed orally. Nasal is entirely unfamiliar to the vast majority of US shoppers. I think a store manager would really be going out on a limb to devote prime impulse-item space for a large arrangement of snuffs. Staff would need to become knowledgeable and comfortable selling it. A huge gamble in training time and shop space for a questionable return. The pleasure of going to a fine tobacconist’s shop and discussing the products with the proprietor is of fond memory for most of us. There are but a handful of such shops left in today’s world. As for the knowledgeable proprietor, he has been replaced by a warm body who can do little more than make correct change. The online sellers who sponsor Snuffhouse are always ready to respond to a question or solve a problem quickly and fairly. That’s all that I could ask for. Thanks guys for bringing the world of nasal snuff to America!

Here’s a pinch to the internet and for making the world a smaller and more convenient place!

Locally the 1.15oz US scotches are around $5. Pochl Apricot is the only other one I’ve seen and it’s $5 for 10g. I agree w/ Stitch that the shop clerks are best suited for making change. The guy at this particular shop told me that other than the US snuffs ALL snuffs are menthol snuffs. Huh. I’m up to 70 or 80 snuffs now and I’ve only bought one single WE can in the US. The rest have been internet and trades. If it weren’t for the web I probably wouldn’t have gotten into snuff at all. The local selection would not have been enough to hook me. There’s enough at NicotineRush to keep me interested indefinitely and thank God they’re in the US and I get my order in 2 days. Another order is coming soon.

My local tobacconist (the only one in this city that carries any snuff at all) seems to be disgusted that anyone would use nasal snuff. He informs me he would never do such a thing and that I am very much in the minority. He can’t understand why anyone would do that. I have a lot more snuff than he has in his shop, but I still buy some from him because I want to support the only one in a metro area of one million who carries any snuff. It cost quite a bit more than ordering on line.

If I was a tobaconnist in the US, I’d make a little display, with a nice printed sign, “British Nasal Snuff”, “Imported From England” and buy 3-4 5g cans of a strong menthol, nice perfumed, and good SP, charge about $4 each, and have a sample can opened of each one. And have the display on a counter near the register. And see how it goes. The problem I suspect, is most tobaconnists in the US don’t use these themselves and are not interested.

@ tom502: Reading what some have written here before, that sounds very much like how Dean Swift was sold in the 80’s. I guess it never caught on. I think you’d have to give away a lot of tins before people would come back and ask for it. Otherwise I think most would be hesitant to try.
