So it seems extremely difficult to find these American brands anywhere, so I’m turning to you guys to help me with recommendations for snuffs on par with the elusive American plain scotchs that are available on mrsnuff.
I’m looking for that nice campfire scent with a fine dry grind just like a scotch or toast. I tried Irish 22 but it wasn’t smokey enough. And searching through past threads it seems SG Kendal Brown is supposed to be smokey but that is coarse and moist, which I don’t usually like.
Please share your favorite campfire smokey recommendations. Thank you!
There really isn’t anything like the US scotches with their smokey BBQ flavour, sorry but don’t know where to get them these days I got all mine many years ago before stupid laws forced all the US snuff stores to close shop and Mr.Snuff moved to Isle of Man.
Might want to try getting some blending latakia and toasting it in the oven (tobacco must be bone dry to get it to a fine grind) then grinding it down and mixing it with plain snuffs like toasts.
Viking Dark might fit the bill except it is medium moisture and grind but if you let it dry out it becomes a fine dry snuff, but it is more pleasant and better tasting to take it with medium moisture.
Smokiest snuff I can think of is Bernard’s Gekachelter Virginie, which is so smoky I can almost smell ham in it. Phenomenally good snuff, but also currently not in production. Medium grind and I guess medium moisture, so not at all similar to US scotch in that regard, but may make a come back (in some form or other) through McChrystals.
The only other oneI know of that I would call smoked is another out of production one - Rosinski’s Uckermarker.
Some people report that Indian Madras snuffs provide that smokines, however to my nose the ones iv’e tried are more burnt rather than smoked and provide ashiness rather than smoke.
That been said adding a touch of madras to a toast does give it a nice boost.
Unfortunatelly been in the UK iv’e never had access to US Snuffs so don’t know what the US Scotch’s are like.
Will be watching this thread incase someone comes up with a snuff i’m not aware of and need to try.
HDT is one of my favorites. I don’t get the smokiness out of it. It’s more of a buttery scent with maybe a touch 0f “old bookstore” if you know what I mean. But it does vary a little. WoS #22 is the only one that, to me, has any true “smokiness” albeit very mild and not campfire enough. My local smoke shop used to carry WE Garrett plain and sweet but not anymore. So I’m hoping to connect with someone on the buy trade marketplace who can get it locally.
I’m tempted to buy a whole case but it’s a lot to spend on it. on the other hand, if i did, I’d probably never need to buy again in my life… Have you ever ordered from them? Is it legit? thanks for the resource i’ll keep it in mind. i’m a little surprised there isn’t anyone in Marketplace that I could trade with. Guess they all are keeping their stash of scotch through this period of scarcity.
@n9inchnails I put an order in yesterday for both Viking Dark and Viking Dark Scotch. I wasn’t sure of which would ultimately be closer to what I’m looking for with the smokey scent. I also ordered Paul Gotard Latakia have you had the Paul Gotard? I was thinking that there might be smokiness associated with the Latakia. If I don’t try them. I’ll never know I suppose. Thx
American Scotch!? What’s next, Scottish Bourbon? Next thing you know cats and dogs will be living in harmony.
I know we have at least 5 domestic snuff varieties in the US. I don’t know their names nor current manufacturer (probably German since our biggest tobacco house is in good with their houses). One of them was a toasted flu cured variety. All of them are some of the least pleasant sniffing sensations I’ve ever encountered. There’s a few guys in the SE US on pipes magazine whom use those snuffs. But that place is high-brow and full of cops, just so you know where your headed.
Older black women from the SE are the major market for snuff in the US. They are much tougher than I.
It is insane with the prices, when I was buying them several years ago they cost about 5 -10 dollars for the 1.15oz tins. Glad I got a large tin of Levi Garrett, 5.58oz when I did, I think that only cost me about 20 dollars.
Dang. I can get either variety (one has XX, one has a peach on the label) from the drive-thru/walk-up tobacconist for just over a $1. I’d bet the illicit crystal chhinkni being sold at the park down the block is easier on the nose. Snuv, Reaper/White Walker feels soothing in comparison.
Stumbled upon an unopened tap tin of Silver Dollar Scotch which turned out to be quite pleasant.
Anyone here know how close this stuff is to an American scotch? £0.99 for a 5g tap tin and available in bulk, so seems like it might be worth exploring by those looking for a reasonably priced alternative.
