Hello snuff-takers. For years, i´ve been buying a lot of diferent types of snuff, (like others snufftakers usually do), some of which were lost in the drawer for years. Then, one day, you find one tin or tap of a snuff that you forgot, but the poor powder has lost its essence and delicious flavour. I want to share with you mates some technics that i use to retrive this snuff. The first thing that i usually do is put the snuff out of the tin or tap, and put it in other container, a glass jar is what i use . then in the morning i put the jar with the snuff under the sun just for one hour, or one and a half. the sun gives new live to the tobacco powder. If the snuff is so dry after the long time forgotten, you can use distilled water, is the normal way to rehydrate the tobacco, (snuff, cigars, or pipe mixtures), but for snuff i dont use distilled water. I preffer to add one or two drops of green tea, (with no suggar, cream or honney ofc). I read this technic in an old book about snuff, in wich i read about Madame Grandmaison an her snuff known as Martinique. She sold her snuff in bottles and requires moistening before use, the application of a drop or two drops of green tea, draws out the fine flavour. So friends thats what i do with my old old forgotten snuff i hope you find it helpfull or at least funny. If someone knows other ways to retrive snuff please share it with me/us Greetings
I have tried many different methods of rehydrating snuff. The one I like best is to use a piece of lemon or lime peel, and put it in the tin, leave overnight or until you get the moisture level you seek. It works well w/ almost any type of snuff. It also imparts a little citrus scent, but not a lot. As I have a large snuff collection, I use this method as some of my snuffs are a few years old. I also keep some of them in the freezer to lock in the moisture. The tap boxes are a different problem. For them, I moisten a q tip w/ water or distilled water, leave overnight, remove the qtip and enjoy. I’ve read many methods on this site, but I like my own the best.
Any liquid to moisten, also any fresh fragrant flowers or herbs, hydrosols, tinctures, diluted essential oils or use a piece of cotton for indirect scenting, food extracts, oily coffee beans, tonquin bean, nut oils, clarified butter in small batches, candy flavorants. Citrus rinds, sliced fruit, potatoes - overnight only! Stir, Shake and Sieve for best results. Happy Snuff Revival :)>- Sun and air are bad for snuff. Always sterilize jars and lids for storage, keep out of direct sun and sudden temperature changes may cause dew and mold/mould growth. Store in dark dry place.
@basement_shaman What you said. The only other option is to snuff it all up as fast as possible. That seems to work for me.
I left out a steamy shower, A piece of wet terracotta flower pot, humidor , girl friends unmentionables , cow pies for that barnyard scent, fresh cut grass, peat moss, mushrooms , and a thousand other things to add moisture and scent . If you like a scent and can bottle it; snuff will pick up that scent. Just another reason to decant snuff into air tight glass. I.E. cross contamination
