W o S tins

Quick question, I just got my first mr snuff order in today and started sampling… I got to the crumbs of comfort, removed the protective tape, tapped on the top so it would be even and it was overflowing when I opened it, glad I got my money’s worth but is this normal with these tins? I’ll have to transfer some of the overflow to a smash box or something…

Whenever you receive WoS tins, transfer the snuff to a decent container. Then step on the WoS tin to flatten it before you discard it.

The trick with these is dropping them three or four times flat on the table so the snuff is not all piled up on one side and overflowing, before you open it each time. Tapping on the top is just not enough to get it to level out.

@ Pieter: That’s a bit harsh, there are much worse and less suitable snuff containers on the market right now (eg; the SG and GH tap boxes). When opening WoS tins I just hold the bottom half firmly against a table and pull the lid straight off with the other hand, then I sweep the overflow off into an empty container or put it in a bullet.

I always open my tins over a piece of paper. That way I can salvage the spillage. And yes it’s normal for them to be filled that well. Xanders advice of dropping them on the table top a few times helps also.

I think the spillage might be solved by finding some kind of round plastic cap to fill the space between the actual tin cap and the tin container - the problem is I haven’t found the right one yet (and it might be easier to simply move the tobacco to a different container, of course).

The thing I hate about this is how when they overflow after the first couple of openings quite a bit of snuff gets into the opening/closing grooves which can make them hard to open at times. I have this problem with McChrystal’s containers too as they are often overfilled.

In this day and age of a $1 bag of chips overfilled with air, I find it funny we are complaining about packaging overfilled with the product we ordered. Ken

I’m with Devilock76.

I shake mine vigirously hoping to fluff up the contents so more will spill out onto my table top. I then use my trusty snuff tube to sniff it all up into my nostrils. I appreciate that they give me my moneys worth!

I appreciate the advice guys… The dropping method should work nicely… On a side note the F&T tins are great… Wish all the companies put that much into their tins.

Xander… Worked like a charm! It was perfectly level no spillage. Now I have a new question… The seal seems pretty loose on the WoS tin… I keep my tins in a mason jar I don’t know the name for it, you know the ones that have a metal lever that closes onto a gasket. Is that good enough for storage considering the tin is a bit loose?

If you use the WoS cans to carry in your pocket, try tamping the snuff down hard with your thumb. It makes a flat surface that you can pinch from. Stays surprisingly intact and stops its going everywhere when you open the can. But better still: can in an airtight container, snuff decanted into a good snuff box as you need it.

@ EricHill78: As I just recentley learned in a thread a few days ago, those bail and clamp jars with the rubber gasket are called French Kilner jars. I have bulk snuff stored in some of those. I don’t bother sealing my open tins in anything, but I have an old ammo box and some other tight cans for my unopened tins. Some are in ziplock bags inside the sealed boxes. For open tins, the best bet is to really use them up as fast as you can. Sometimes if they get a little bent the seal can loosen. You may be able to squeeze or bend the lid until it closes better. I’ve done this a few times. Also press down to make sure its closed tight. There’s no perfect seal, but it seems to slow down the snuff drying out.

@Xander thanks for the advice. Most of the tins I ordered from Mr Snuff are 25 grams which will likely last me a long long time so hopefully the jars will keep them fresher for a bit longer. Worst case is dried out snuff really bad? Does it loose all it’s nic and flavor?

@Eric: As far as I’m aware nicotine doesn’t evaporate so old snuff should have a similar/the same nicotine content as new snuff. When snuff loses moisture it does tend to lose flavour though.

@street carp I figured that much… I’ll just keep the tins in the kilner jars and hope for the best.

Out of curiosity and hopefully semi-relevance to the subject at hand, how are the Wilsons bulk jars for long term storage? Ken

@ Ken. I have some Wilsons in 1/2lb tubs and some SG in the same tub as Wilson’s use for thei 1lb tubs. Both are excellent and keep snuff as fresh as the day you received it. Stefan

Thanks, COC is becoming my goto and only lately, so definitely worth a bulk order of that magnitude. Now I need to try their Grand Cairo. Ken
