Newbie here. I have been snusing for awhile, and recently ordered my first snuff. I have terrible allergies. I use prescription nasal spray for them, and it keeps them under control. When I tried using snuff, my body reacted as it would if I were to put my whole face onto a cat and inhale deeply - I sneezed furiously. I read enough to know that you don’t want to snort snuff, rather, you should only sniff lightly. The Ozona Presidente does have a wonderful metholated effect. However, I’m not really getting nicotine like I do with snus… Any advice would be most appreciated!

M

I am not the snuff expert but President is a high menthol snuff and maybe not the best one to start out with but if you have dust allergies a dry scotch wouldn’t be a good start either. I am willing to bet these folks here will give you the right info on which product might be better and hints on enjoying snuff & having allergies

C

There may just be something in President that doesn’t agree with you. I guess the only way to find out for sure would be to buy a different style snuff and see how you react to that. Sometimes schmalzers give me a sneezing fit, I just had one earlier today. I never have that problem with any other style of snuff.

C

I actually bought a bunch of snuffs… De Kralingse Macuba 12.5g De Kralingse Prins Regent 12.5g Ozona President 7g Poschl Bayern Prise Brasil 10g Poschl Gletscherprise 10g The Presidente, now that I am more used to it, causes the least sneezing. Any of the DK turn me into a sneeze-mobile!

T

I think DK chococreme did it to me too. Persistent sneezing

B

time time time it’s only time. Yeah I was the same way but after a while your body gets used to snuff and you will get the nicotine hit and the violent sneezing will decrease. In fact people who never knew me before I became a snuffer don’t believe me that I used to have terrible allergies. In fact even when everyone else is having terrible allergic effects I tend to hardly have any effect. It used to be that I violentily sneezed on a daily basis I was lucky on the days when it was only part of the day I sniffled and wheezed. Ah snuff it’s magic.

D

The longer I use snuff the more my allergies clear up. My nose used to run all the time, sounds crazy but snuff has actually cleared it up. Sure I still have to blow my nose after snuff use but overall my allergies are so much better.

H

Apart from the cold I currently have which is not doing me any good at all (my nose is expelling so much moisture from my body I’m worried I might be dehydrating :)) ) I’ve found snuffing has made it much easier for me to breathe. I used to be a slave to Otrivine sinusitis spray in the summer, which really isn’t good for you with continual use, but I’m actually looking forward to the hayfever season this year over here to see if it affects me. I don’t reckon it will.

C

So how long does it take to get accustomed? It’s only been two days, granted, and it is definitely easier, but I am still sneezing quite a bit. It is odd though that even though I can’t keep it in my nose for that long my nic cravings from snus are disappeared.

Maybe you should try the bent straw method just to see if there is a difference http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/7160/gadget-for-beginners/p1

B

I don’t have allergies but two snuffs have begun to be sneezy to me- RR Mills Plain and Navy Plain. I really have no idea why and I’ve always enjoyed them both. The ‘cat pee’ smell never bothered me . @-)

M

Both are made by Swisher. Makes you wonder

B

About he cat’s they’re using or Swisher?

M

hahahaha I didn’t even catch that

C

Thanks Matt! I’ll try that if I don’t figure it out within a week or so!!

I’d say avoid mentholated snuffs, you might well be allergic to a flavoring component. Try some plain tobacco snuff like Sam Gawith’s Kendall Brown or a Toast or American Scotch and sniff it lightly. Also you can absorb more nicotine as you get used to snuff.

M

@CzechCzar The cool thing about the cut bent straw is that you only need a tiny bit and because you blow it into your nose, it doesn’t shoot to the back of your throat. @TobaccyLassy did a video showing you how

Just tried it with De Kralingse Prins Regent… more flavor, but I still sneezed violently after 30 seconds or so. =( I hope that I get used to this soon…

I would say (from my experience) that after continual use of snuff it was around 2 weeks. After a couple weeks I really noticed a difference and snuff became even more enjoyable to me. I didn’t sneeze as much, my nose wasn’t draining as bad etc… I read somewhere on here that it is almost comparable to your first cigarette, it probably tasted weird, made you feel weird, maybe even made you cough, but after some time it becomes natural/easier. Snuff I think is the same way, it only gets better and better with time. The main difference is cigarettes will take years off of your life, snuff won’t.

C

Many thanks for all the help guys! It is getting easier. I am definitely sneezing less, and when I do sneeze, it’s not violently out my nose. Now the nose draining is starting to be a problem more than the sneezing, but I’ve no doubt that will go away as well.

A

@CzechCzar Beginners usually sneeze for a long while because of taking very small pinches. large ones, about the size of a pea between both nostrils, are far less sneezy. Before you try anything else try just increasing the size, it might be all you need to do. take the pinch and insert very slightly into the nostril and then take an inhalation no stronger than one needed to take the snuff into the nose, sharp but not deep as though you are just sniffing something nice that is cooking. This works with many people.

@toffeenose - Hi Debbie!

So, I am little by little getting used to it. The Ozona and Poschl no longer cause sneezing. The DK varies… so far Prins Regent is my favorite, and easiest to take. I usually don’t sneeze with that one. The other two, make me sneeze still, but not the earth-shattering, sinus-clearing sneezes of before. I am definitely getting used to it. Thanks for all the help. On another note, my nic addiction has gone way down since quitting snus. I put in a normal portion yesterday, and had to take it out. It was too much nicotine! Still, I do miss the flavor of snus, though I don’t really crave it at all. One thing I am noticing is that it is MUCH easier to pinch, rather than taking it off the back of my hand. Easier to control the amount. I find that if I transfer a pinch to one finger, and take it off there, it is quite practical!
