Vintage Levi Garrett

Xander kindly sent me a generous sample of circa 1966 Levi, which arrived today. I was amazed at just looking and feeling it as I decanted from the poly bag to a snuff-tin just how fresh it looked. It could be a newly purchased modern snuff, so hats off to the old timer’s jars or whatever they retailed it in. The snuff is light brown and forms small clumps and is very silky to the touch. A very slight aroma eminates from the snuff box but nothing much. However, upon taking a pinch you get a wonderful mild burn and then a delicious sweet/smoky/buttery flavour. The experience is completed by a lingering bouquet that slowly tapers off leaving a clean palette. The nicotine hit I find middling and it’s easy to take fairly large pinches, certainly larger than an Irish Toast. A great snuff. Now, a couple of questions to the US brothers: where did all this vintage snuff come from and how does this compare to its modern counterparts? I’ve tried a few US Scotchs but I’m no expert. EDIT: As I’ve been typing and thinking, Ive been snuffing this and its very, very easy to use, a joy in fact.

ebay is an amazing place, snuffster. Look and find. Levi Garrett seems to be one of the ones that turn up the most. Set yourself to the US ebay site if you are not getting many results. It was cheaper to buy that vintage one including shipping, than to buy a modern one from Lil Brown including shipping. Make sure the ones you are perusing have good seals, otherwise you are just buying a nice bottle. How it compares to its modern counterparts is a discussion floating around here someplace. I’ve only had a handful of scotches myself, but that one is the most mellow and flavorful. Also at this point I’m afraid I have to now close offers on sharing any more of this. I’m down to about an ounce and a half of it, which will keep me comfortably until the next one turns up.

I would also like to thank Xander for generously sharing his Levi Garrett with me too!

I also received a LARGE sample of this wonderful snuff. Amazing how fresh and fluffy it still is after all 43 years. Thank you Xander, will speak to you via e-mail soon. I’ve got some George IV up my nose at present, thanks to Debbie. Debs, I will speak to you tomorrow.

Yeah that thick brown tinted glass bottle and the big old cork really do a good job at keeping this snuff fresh.

The cork from my bottle, was just about worthless after I took it out for the first time. It doesn’t make a very good seal no, so I just took a plastic baggy, and held it in place with a rubber band over the top. It seems to work pretty well now. If anyone else wants to try some, now that Xander’s supply is about gone. I’ve got some as well. I don’t think mine is as old as his, but they taste pretty similar.

You could also use some Glad press-n-seal.

I never thought of using that. I might have to give it a try.

Thanks for that link bb. I have been looking in about every store locally for cork, and haven’t been able to find anything that would work.

You may want to let it breathe as a cork would. Or not.

I had no trouble finding a replacement cork for mine. Its a deep cork though, but the width is right when its wedged in. The original seal was good, and the new one I think is good enough until I use this up. Then the old cork can go back in for display purposes. Here’s a new on on ebay: Levi GarrettThis one looks to date post 1966 since its marked “Conwood” probably even newer looking at the font of the measurement amount. Hardly “antique” as the seller describes.

and another In a crock! Seller “thinks” its empty though. There’s also a nice glass Maccoboy bottle up as a “buy it now” Sadly its empty.
