So about a month ago I won a vintage tin of F&T Morlaix from the 70s. I just got it today and when I opened it the tin seems pretty oxidized. If I sift the snuff through a pair of panty hose is it safe to use. Im kinda sketched out ha.
William, I’m pretty sure that will do the trick. Just be carefull when you scrape the snuff from the tin that you don’t go to near to the metal. You will lose some snuff but what’s left, will be OK.
I got two of them. I’m not going to use them. I gave one away already. More of a keepsake, I think. There were aluminum oxide crystals on the surface of the snuff and a lot stuck to the lid. Even a magnet won’t help you when its aluminum. Use at you own risk. The snuff smells wonderful. I have considered perhaps scooping off the top layer of snuff where the metal bits are, but I’m still wary of it. The same seller had some Illingworths in excellent condition, and some J&H Wilson in dry, but useable condition. It’s hit and miss when getting these vintage snuffs.
I bought some of these Vintage F&T and Illingworths and mine smells wonderful too, so i ended using the snuff
Now I know who kept outbidding me on the Dr. Rumney’s!
Aha! AP’s the one who took my snuff. I don’t have enough snuff, I need more!
Well after doing some research on Aluminum Oxide I decided to pitch the snuff. I kept the tin because after cleaning it up a bit it looks really cool and also the tin was sent in an old Fribourg & Treyer box which is even more cool because it has their old phone number and everything on it. The Morlaix in the tin did smell exactly like my new tin but it was too sketchy with the aluminum oxide chrystals in it, I don’t want to get some weird disease from that stuff.
The same seller routinely had vintage Tucky for sale too. I lost those bids as well. Did anybody here get one? Any good?
Not me guys i bought those in the beggining of last year
I also have revisited a couple of older F&T tins and noticed some white or silver-colored flecks inside. I figured at the time it was simply some of the white paint used on the outside ( these tins had become dented/ squashed in such a fashion that they could have picked up paint, or aluminum from the threads of the cans). So I also wonder about safety and purity. I would hate to throw them away! By the way I should mention that these snuffs were more dry and loose than caked to the tins inside, but they did contain some moderately sized round clumps, or “snuff bunnies” (see if that term takes off or not…). So, any more thoughts on this? Should I just move my new batches of F&T’s to small glass jars ASAP? I don’t want to waste money or snuff, as nice as those F&T tins are…
I think this F&T tins keeps the snuff in good conditions for a very long time Mr O.
I love the term “snuff bunnies”. I keep my not being used right now snuffs in the fridge so they often produce snuff bunnies.
I’m bidding some very old F&T right now. I know this thread is old, and probably dead, but I read it w/ great interest. I hope I win my snuff, kinda pricey, but the tins(6) all look mostly full, in the photos I can’t see any corrosion of the aluminum, but I will keep an eye out for the dreaded flecks that some have described.
