I had quite a long chat on the phone with the man at mysmokingshop a couple of days ago. I was encouraging him to take part more on this forum, but that’s by-the-by. You might be interested in the following, though. (If you don’t know it already). 1) Viking is his brand. He supplies it to the other retailers who sell it. 2) Viking is indeed made by SG. 3) The three plain ones are SG base snuffs with no scent, so for example Viking Blonde is the base flour that SG use for their SP Top Mill, but with no scent added. 4) SG have started marketing their own plain varieties as a result of the amount of Viking that is being sold - hence the double label incidents recently. He also said that next time he did a German order he would try and get some Sternecker Echt Fresko. He is a very nice man…
Is Viking Dark a SG’s Black Coffee with no cafe-scent added?
No its a finer grind Scotch Black
Scotch Black? I found they totally different.
I disagree, Scotch Black is much much smokier and harsher than Viking Dark to my nose. Scotch Black had smells like being in a coal town, strong leather, leaves, stuff like that, really fantastic but definitely harsh and pungent. Viking Dark is so soft in comparison, more like walnut, light touches of smoke, just good tobacco generally. I dunno though maybe a finer grind can effect the scent that dramatically.
viking dark does seem to be the same base as SG coffee and firedance to me. scotch black is darker too from memory.
My Scotch Black is identical to VD in every way except the grind, I don’t get the same tobacco aftertaste in VD that I do in Black Coffee or Chocolate. I also find it funny that all the people who say VD and SB are different are the very same people who were saying Viking Brown and KB plain were different snuffs, take a look at the original post Viking Brown is unscented Kendal Brown but wait so is Kendal Brown Plain.
Sternecker Echt Fresko… i cannot recommend it enougth
