Just tried some and I really don’t like it, or at least my first impression isn’t favourable. What is that smell, smells a bit like stale biscuits? Perhaps this is one I may come back to, but I doubt it. I do find the smell really quite unpleasant. Anyone else found this?

C

I get a faint “mustiness” from it along with a biscuity aroma similar to a toast, but the mustiness not enough to put me off completely. It’s not one I’ll likely order again.

T

I ordered two tins as it was recommended for beginners. Hmmmm. However, I have seen written many times that one should put away a snuff and try it again when you’re more used to snuff taking. Perhaps I’ll do that. I’ve got a tin of Viking Brown too…which I’ve just tried. Similar yet different taste and smell. I like it a lot more actually. Like old leather.

S

I get a buttery sort of biscuit smell. I was unsure of it fresh from the tin, but after airing and drying it a little bit I love it. Definitely save it and go back to it later. Or send it to me, either way.

T

I will take your advice. Crickey that Viking Brown is chunky isn’t it?

T

I believe I have just learned an incredibly important snuffing lesson. Didn’t like Viking Blond on March 19th, like Viking Blond on March 22nd. That’ll teach me.

T

Further to my early and rather ignorant and neophyte post about not liking the smell of Viking Blond and then after a mere day or two liking it, I was introducing a few friends the other day to the joys, and whilst most actually liked the experience - and one or two have asked me to send them a bit - one did turn his nose up and remark that VB smelled like mouse droppings! Bloody philistine.

W

I find it to be quite mild. I leave it for a clear nose to enjoy the subtleties

I

When anyone mentions bad smells I think of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDB-yswOrzc

I

Just got a tin in the mail, it smells like…nothing. So I will have to re-try it as the first snuff of the day in he AM after a good nasal cleanse.

D

Just taken some Viking Blond and have to say it has an aroma about it, its odd, I cant figure it out, a musty smell ? Its almost a moister toast ?

C

@Derek_007‌ I think you nailed it; it has a toasty note but none of the pain or difficulty usually associated with the classic toasts like HDT. Truthfully I don’t buy the Lundy Foot legend*. I think the powers “that wanted to be” in the snuff world of the time invented it as a right of passage where boys became men. And the sheep sought a good hiding place. If one detects an odd odor coming from their tin of Viking Blonde, make sure your cats have a nice, clean and tidy place to pee, and keep your tin tightly closed under lock and key. *I don’t buy the Lundy Foot legend. I do buy The Lundy Foot Toast by Sir Johnny Scott. In large amounts. It is the toast of the toasts. IT is a legendary snuff and a gift to us all.

J

I must say, @chefdaniel, a comment of your on another thread inspired me to buy a tin, but it’s languishing in my fridge. Whenever I took a pinch, I found myself saying “Why didn’t I just have a pinch of HDT instead?”

D

@JakartaBoy‌ I think thats my issue as well, its a toast but not a toast. It does not give the same hit as a toast, and is more fluffy and moister. I find it a bit clogging as well ? HDT wins in my opinion or Irish Delight / No 22 as an mid way snuff … Or take one of @chefdaniel‌ lovely dry toasts … Maybe I just enjoy a drier snuff with a bit of burn ?

C

Viking Blonde is a confusing snuff; a toast wannabe. All the positive attributes except the most important one. It’s like smoking Camel Non Filters then suddenly switching to Marlboro Lights. No “hit”. I still dig into VB on occasion but not that often, and I have my stash of HDT at hand when I do. @Derek_007‌ Thank you for your kind compliments. Cheers

F

i love toasts for smell and hit, but there is a problem with my left nostril- no matter how careful i am, that nostril always takes the snuff straight to my throat. wondering if its to do with my deviated septum, though the left side is the smaller side. viking blonde is my equivalent of a toast now i think, because i can usually take it without trouble.

T

As this post has been resurrected and I was the OP, here’s an update. I’m still taking VB and I still don’t really know why my first impression was so unfavourable. I carry it in a bullet, because it’s not too fine it works very well like that. I’m not always in the mood for it, but I take it nearly every day. I get a good burn from it too.

M

@Firestarter0 I found the same happening to me again and again. I have not a deviated septum (at least not to my knowledge) so my current theory is that it’s due to pinching with the same hand. I’m working to adapt my technique!

F

@marvinlapsus how do you mean? i get it when taking it off the back of my hand, but the problem IS worse when pinching, though im a lefty.

M

@Firestarter0 I’ve never tried the back of the hand method with toasts, it simply doesn’t work for me (I get massive throat hits) when taking fine snuffs, every nose is a world I suppose!

J

I love me some viking blonde also @Thunderbird‌. Well maybe not love but it is a staple, kind of like porridge, it ain’t fancy but it’s nice and satisfying. I wish its scent lasted longer, recommendations?

G

I’ve started blending this with all my fine grind Toque snuff and it’s a great way to reduce them hitting the back of the throat whilst retaining the dominant scent of the Toque since the blonde has such a subtle one.

T

Opened a new tin of Blonde at the weekend and I’m still waiting for it to settle down. Not a nice scent in it’s early stages on this tin, but the last one wasn’t as bad.

M

I personally love the scent of the VB. It just seems like a very high quality snuff to me. As for what exactly the smell is? Maybe it’s the pure quality tobacco used, I don’t know how it’s made and what if anything is added.

T

It’s still really ‘biscuity’ [which I don’t like] - I am tempted to leave the lid off for a few hours…should I?

J

Find that mixing the Blond with the Spear I’d excellent.

J

…is excellent… Darn spell check!

C

I just cracked a new tin that’s been in my insulated cooler for a few months. I think what I’m detecting immediately is a fermented note in there; lightly sour, yeasty, doughy and a bit of “compost pile” made from fall leaves. It’s fading with some air, but I don’t think it will go away entirely. The toastiness in the last tins isn’t as prominent with this one, but I hope some breathing will remedy that. It’s not unpleasant, it’s just…different.

H

Yeah they are definitely fermentation odors for sure. Almost barnyard-like. I like them, I think they make Viking Blonde unique. It is pretty much powdered tobacco in its most natural unflavored form. The nic hit is pretty low though. I could pack both nostrils solid with Viking Blonde if needed and not sneeze.

F

I aired this for a day or so and then tried it a couple of times this morning. I was disappointed. There is nothing in that tin that made me want to ever try it again. I will try it again in a month or so, but experience tells me that in such cases as this, I am not likely to change my assessment.

T

That’s what I thought @fredh - I changed my mind quite quickly but I still don’t like the smell or taste of a new tin of VB.
