Hi all, Just joined and I have a lot of reading to do but I wanted to jump right in and get some of your views although there may already have been a disscusion on this so please point me to that if so. When I smoked I was happy just to have the same cigar or cigarette day in day out but with snuff it seems I constantly need to change what I am using and I seem also to have some fixation with experimenting with mixing which usually works out ok. Why is snuff like this is basically my question? In a way I wish I was satisfied with just the one or two snuffs. Would make life simpler. I have current favourites like Wos No.22 Toast and F&T Morcouba but I still feel the need to take a break from these and use whatever else I have lying around.

@I_snuff_therefore___First off, welcome! Second off, #22 is an excellent go-to snuff, and thirdly Why is snuff like this? I dunno. It’s existential. It just IS. And fourth, Welcome again! >:D<

Yes, it does not replace smoking. It is something different. Can’t give the same nico infusion and maybe it gets boring using the same snuff repeatedly without becomming immune to that particular scent or flavour.

I know for me I like different snuffs at different times of day, although I do have a fair amount of all-day snuffs. I think that the variety satisfies a biologically-programmed want.

I think we only ever learn to tolerate smoking, snuff is objectively pleasant. Someone said that the pleasure of smoking is no different to the pleasure that comes from taking a pair of boots off that hurt you. Smoking is a release, nothing more, which is why we all staid with one brand for years. I genuinely thought I enjoyed chain smoking, nearly six years in I’ve come to agree with that quote.

I stopped smoking with snus (not intentionally) and i feel snus has the same effect as @Abraxas claims for smoking cigarettes, to an extent. ill still change flavours about a bit, but not like most people change snuffs. however, funny Abraxas should post here, as it is their snuff that i dont ever get ‘bored’ of! i seriously can use firedrac like cigarettes, and the pleasure (it is pleasure, and different to the smoking) never seems to have decreased. I think one reason is, most cigarettes are the same ‘flavour’. i smoked many flavoured types of tobacco, but it all comes down to that main cigarette flavour. also, when you come into smoking cigarettes, all you see is cigarettes under different brands. whereas with snuff, the moment you enter this wonderful world you are bombarded with many different scents and types. snuff is also done for the scent and sensation, whereas smoking is just the nicotine. i also agree with abraxas, just adding an extra perspective.

i started snuffing with gletcherprise because it was the only brand found at local store. I kept snuffing it for months and if didn’t find online sellers i would keep going with it. Other issue is nose is tired very quickly which makes us to try different scents.

Ok so I like oranges but when I have a bunch of em It loses its appeal and I might switch to a banana but again after a while I might go back to the orange or maybe for another taste I will switch to an apple and so on. Well I tried an explanation I’m sure everyone switches snuff for different reasons like food/drink pairing or to open up the sinuses with a medicated snuff. Either way I enjoy em all

I used snuff to give up smoking 3.5 years ago with great success. Now I hate the stink of cancer sticks.

We do it because we can! Snuffing is an adventure.

Thanks people. I guess there is not a single reason. Some days I seem to have good snuff days and some where I don’t seem to be able to get the same satisfaction so up and down whereas with smoking it was pretty much same thing always, ultra craving and thinking I wish I was not so hooked on smoking and this was going to be my last packet, so I’m glad to read that some have successfully quit smoking with snuff as a help or replacement. I was on occasion an over-the-top smoker as it seemd that the more nicotine I took then the more I could take or wanted so I know it’s not good for me. Today I got a bad craving for some extra nicotine and to get a snuff break so I bought some nico gum which I have also used a lot in the past. It did the trick and I’m back to stability (it’s only been a few week since my last smoke) but I did have that little Devil on my shoulder telling me to just buy one little tin of cigars. I managed to talk myself out of it but I did come so close. I hope that victory today is a good sign and that I can abandon this nico gum again and probably will just have to accept that snuff will be rather more complicated than smoking and will have to adapt to the lessor nicotine and appreciate the flavours. As an aside my sister is also trying to stop smoking but has faltered after doing very well and the other day she surprised me by asking for one of my bullets which she had seen me using and she wanted plain tobacco unsented snuff so she’s taking the No.22? I watched her as she tried it and she says she likes it? Went up her nose no like an old pro. She sneazed like crazy after some Old Paris?

Well, I am certain there are as many reasons as there are snuffers. I believe though that there are several things that are constants: It is a fact that the olfactory nerves (smell) will fatigue. Ever notice that you can be exposed to some noxious or even wonderful smell that you are very aware of, then after awhile (varies) you don’t notice it as much, or at all? Fatigue as well as acclimation. Snuff is very much a sensory experience. Many of the different smells I can associate with times, places or experiences in my life and I can sort of re-experience them via snuff. You know, Like McChrystal’s Hops reminds of when I brewed my first batch of great beer, or 6 Photo Kailash reminds me of a shopping trip in a great bazaar I went to in Egypt and GH Black Coffee reminds me of sitting in a Starbucks drinking a big mug of dark roasted black coffee on a cold winter morning. It is fast, simple and inexpensive. So there is always that curiosity about the ‘ultimate’ snuff experience, that is not really going to break the bank (well, totally anyway…I have a bad case of TAD after all). So there is not that subconscious ‘brake’ that says Caution… How else can you tickle all of the above fancies while still getting the mellow goodness of the drug of choice for all of us… You know, the divine Miss N…

@stogie Yes! You are right about the ‘fatigue’. I once watched a honeysipper (septic tank emptier) eat an egg salad sandwich while holding the tank hose. He said you get used to the smell. I backed off… I always wondered why a smell can take you back instantly-remind you of something that maybe happened when you were a kid.

F

@ad_noseum that makes it sound like you got dipped in a septic tank as a kid, while eating an egg salad sandwich.

I believe your maybe a snuffaholic , You suffer from the disease of variety. And this is a great problem to have; it insures rotation ,And gives you a chance to use up month old stash.

I

Snuffaholic, quite possible indeed or at least in the process of becomming one. I think I took this up 3 or 4 months ago. I think the trouble is that snuff is the only nico item I now use, apart from the nico gum yesterday. Last night I had a beer and got a great rush from some 4mg gum and the Old Paris which I almost snorted from my bullet and it seemed to go splat against some wall in my nose just beautifully. I went all dreamy for about 10 mins or so it seemed, who knows how long it really was? Anyhow why I’m finally trying to permenantly stop smoking (which I did like) is that recently I have begun to cycle everywhere as I no longer have a car or motorcycle and to get anywwhere I am really having to get a bit fit. Unfortunately as it is apparently colder than Iceland currently here in Ireland (North), my nose drips like a tap everytime I cycle and so snuff really is not compatible. Maybe if it ever warms up it will work better. The scents can be great while cycling along in the fresh air. I actually used to cycle to go and buy my cigars and I began to think this is possibly a bit nuts! A lot of good comments from you all. Glad I joined and asked.

@Firestarter0 Naw-I was doing a construction inspection. I was dipped into a lake, once, without wanting to be. My father threw me overboard to teach me how to swim. It was easy, once I got out of the bag.
