Just received some Samuel Gawith snuffs this morning after having bought a few tap boxes I thought I’d give the tins a go as I heard the tap boxes dry out sooner. Wow, you have to pry open the tin and you can actually hear the air getting sucked in. Comparing the tap boxes to the tin versions of the same flavour I sense a higher moisture and richer flavour. My question is, is that the best way of packaging snuffs, or do you think it doesn’t make a difference? It seems that only SG do it. To me it seems a better way to package snuff, just like foods which are packaged air tight I would imagine snuff is better stored that way. Nonetheless, it’s very satisfying to hear that “tssss” sound when opening a tin it’s like a guaranteed freshness.
Btw, check out their fruit range it’s amazing. Plum, strawberry, apple are all amazing. The strawberry is fantastic that’s a flavour I was looking for - very sweet but that’s my thing, and the apple is so accurate in flavour. Plum is similar to a blackcurrent juice drink - very sweet. Honey is a keeper too, so rich, and compared to Honey Bee by Swisher it’s a lot more of a richer flavour, and banana is great. Good stuff.
Vacuum sealed tins are definitely the way to go for amounts under 100g. I don’t think the bulk containers are a problem because a) the more snuff there is in a container, the less quickly it will dry out, and b) presumably you are jarring it as soon as you get it.
Nothing but top quality and condition snuff from all my encounters with the Vacuum tins. I prefer them over all others and really salute those who use them. It is like rediscovering a new kind of snuff compared to the rotten tap boxes.

Couldn’t agree more with this. I thought all gawith hoggarth was garbage until I tried it out of one of the 25g twist top containers. I hate tap boxes…
@joesnuffer Indeed the GH minitub is very good and amazingly better than the tap box, but the SG style vacuum tin really is much better still. No doubt these are more expensive to produce. The threaded closure of the GH mini tub is its best feature, and the only thing a vacuum tin can’t do well is re-close itself. Although, if the gasket is kept clean it does very well.
I noticed the SG tin has a thin bit if rubber at the top like on airtight seals which must keep it airtight even after opening making it even better than I thought. I wish they made smaller ones so I could carry them about in my pocket then.
It makes a massive difference how snuff is packaged - airtight; essential, vacuum; there is no need for it if the can is airtight but it’s a further guarantee.
@Xander, I agree not only are they the best containers imo, but also very rugged. The thicker walls of the tins can take a beating if you decide to carry them in your pocket.
I had one get bent in an interesting way (it got ran over.) so there was only one way the lid would fit (instead of being round it was oval) and it was still air tight.
