I have a few packets of Marlboro and Camel snus a friend gave me to try, they’re fine enough though I doubt I’ll be buying any. The snus thing isn’t really doing it for me, I’d rather put a bit of jerky in my lip (the habit that caused the gift in the first place) – So, anyway I have this stuff and this morning I tried making some snuff out of my “Good Stuff” RYO tobacco, now that I’ve run out of my Red River, and unfortunately the stuff that makes a better cigarette makes an absolutely flavourless snuff. So I got an idea! I stuck the packets of spearmint in the (now empty) can the camel came in and got a pretty good rendition of the flavour in my snuff. So I’ll call that ‘salvaged’ for this batch, and I’ll just have to find something else to make my snuff with in the future since flavouring with snus isn’t exactly economical. For those of you who make your own, I would also like to proffer the idea to try using a bit of Red River RYO tobacco, its a bit weaker in flavour as well, but has a nice (slight) burn in the nose at first and a smooth, toasty flavour. Of course I just started toying with snuff about 3 days days ago or so, so you might not listen to me after all heh heh. I’m having bad luck with pipe tobaccos though, I’m going to search these forums for some advice now that I’ve got a minute to look (for instance I think part of the problem is it just isn’t dry enough) so we’ll see if I can figure this stuff out. Oh, and while I’ve got a moment here – pleasure to meet yeh mates.
I’m confused why not just buy some snuff unless you’re really short of money Toques 10 for 9 deal isn’t bad and it’s free shipping. Camel snus probably won’t cut it and marlboro definitely won’t, you might want to try some swedish snus although it’s fairly expensive unless you order like 30 cans. Pipe tobacco my advice is it takes practice, it needs to be packed correctly which usually means not too tight, I usually pack it in three stages 1st fill 2/3 to the top lightly then press down lightly don’t compress it much then repeat twice compressing slightly more each time but not too much or else you won’t get smoke out easily and you need to not smoke too fast or else you’ll burn your tongue since high temperatures transform the sugars into acids. Don’t worry if you have to relight like 10-20 times.
Camel snus isn’t fit to be called snus, let alone be used in snuff. The only thing I found it was good for was filling my wastebasket a little bit more. I even tried to give it away, but got no takers. I can’t say I blame them.
@jwalker: Toque’s deal isn’t just not bad, its excellent. Its practically giving it away! I too am often baffled as to why some people think its cheaper to grind up RYO. Professionally made snuff is vastly superior, and considerably cheaper. Other than for hobbyists, I can see no advantage in grinding one’s own.
Did I not mention? Whoops, I meant too heh heh. I’m waiting for the Toque to come in and I was just playing around with making my own for fun. Not about cheap really (of course RYO fags aren’t about being cheaper either for me believe it or not). And I didn’t actually grind up the snus into the snuff, I just tossed the baggies in with it. Further, I tossed in Marlboro portions, the Camel I actually threw away, its just not good. But yeah, “Other than for hobbyists. . …” applies to me mate, but there’s a steep learning curve apparently! You’d think “Make the tobacco a powder” would be pretty straight-forward heh heh. As for the purpose of my original post, since it is becoming clear that I was not clear, I kinda just thought my making use of two things I didn’t particularly like to make something I did was interesting. Last, Jwalker I’m sorry I wasn’t clear, I meant having bad luck with grinding a pipe tobacco into snuff. Only the burley turned out okay and frankly I’m beginning to think the blokes on youtube making snuff out of pipe tobaccos are a bit off. – I have no issues with smoking a pipe, and I never have to relight, but thats due to a lot of factors that don’t really have anything to do with “skill” as it were. On the other hand, all but one of the pipe tobaccos I have just do not make something I would sniff a second time. The Altadis - Mild Burley J4 is actually pretty ‘okay’ as snuff. Here’s hoping my toque gets in Monday so I can try them all (got 10x10g deal) and pick a mixture to make two orders of the 6 for 5 25g cans. . . and get some Thuoc Lou for my kiseru because I’m out of Koiki (and it became impossible to find about a month after the PACT passed. . .) I’ve heard nothing but good things about Thuoc Lou as a snuff as well (thus Toque selling it) and I’ll probably give it a go that way too. Thanks for the commentary you two.
@Yoru: Grind away, by all means. If that gives you satisfaction so be it. I’m just expressing my personal take on self grinding. If you look you will find literally dozens of threads on home made snuffs, certainly plenty of members here do so. I’ve even had a few of their snuffs in trades, some are even good Someone ground up Thouc Lou some time back and I don’t know what else they did with it, but they named the resulting snuff “Old Saigon” You should look up Akibatai/Itsuke. She used that Koiki, I think. She may have found out how to get it, I’ve always wanted to try it myself, but not going to go out of my way. Legally, its not even covered by PACT, but lots of retailers panicked and over compensated. Anyway, she hasn’t commented in awhile, but I’m sure she’s still active. Maybe on youtube.
Ok got you it did seem weird to say you’re having trouble with pipe tobacco in the same post my guess would be dry it out first which with altadis isn’t going to happen, Yeah I wouldn’t say camel is complete crap but it’s just weak, overpriced and tastes bad but it is smokeless tobacco. Marlboro is garbage I think they put cigarette tobacco in the pouches they’re weaker than nicorette gum. I agree toques deal is almost giving it away especially with free shipping I mean if someone just orders like three or five tins to try out he’s paying for them to have it. I’m not saying don’t grind away but if you’re trying to quit smoking which is what I gathered from the post I would use the self made stuff as an aside which you’re apparently doing. It would be interesting to make snuff or maybe even snus from something like AS perique roll your own or something.
Nah I’m not quitting smoking, I like it. But I like electronic cigs too because they give me the floral flavours I like (Rose, Parma violet, Lychee), and pipes because they have the strong english blends and smooth virginias (I don’t really like aeros), and now snuff because the flavour is just so -deep- due to being a taste derived from scent. Cigars I like on occaision for much the same reasons I like a good English pipe weed, but I dislike the S. American tradition of spicy finishes so I don’t smoke cigars often. As for Akibatai, Xander, last I asked she had given up on koiki and pretty much pipes in general in favour of snuff. Last thing, if I were to hypothetically take up snus, where would I buy something halfway decent? And what brands would be suggested as creme de la creme?
@yoru- There are so many Snus types to chose from, where to start? I would give the two best rather plain tobacco choices a go, General, tobacco taste with bergamot, and Grovsnus, tobacco and not so much Bergamot. These are plain snus flavors but are some of the best when taste is acquired. I have no idea where you are, so no idea where you can get some. Thouc Lao grinds into a really nice plain smokey snuff, two thumbs up from me, it is great base tobacco. Good luck, enjoy your tobacco. I snus with Grov original portions, my go to after two years and 50 different kinds. I sniff every kind of snuff and love all SP varients, Rose, original Fubar grunt, most McChrystals, and about 30 others now.
+1 Whalen I also would reccomend Ettan Snus… Simple tobacco great flavor with sometimes the hint of chocolate
That reminds me, what is SP? There’s a Rose? Ohh, must have. I’ll have a look into those snus. . .maybe. I have to many tobacco habits as it is so not sure yet heh heh. Oh! I just had another idea!!! Wintergreen gum! Put some of -that- in the tobacco. There, mint flavouring for pretty cheap, and it’ll flavour a few batches. God I’ve got to stop coming up with insane ideas. . . You think the fruity gums would work as well? Hnn. . . Whatever, I just want my Toque to come in. These inane attempts are only doing barely serviceable results. I’d really rather stop with this and leave it to the professionals. I’ll stick to mixing up pipe weed.
Ettan OP is good. So is Skruf, Grov, and Nicky & Johnny.
If you tried or ordered Toque Original you will know what SP is. Most English snuff makers have one or several. Toque has a Rose, again most English snuff makers (as well as Indian snuff makers) have a rose snuff or use rose scenting in blends. Its pretty common, really. There’s even an American rose scented snuff: Maccoboy, which is a cousin to Macouba (Macuba). Our only Dutch snuff maker makes a Macuba. Wintergreen gum? Howabout teaberry gum (aka checkerberry gum). Well, Swisher in the US has a Checkerberry snuff. It tastes just like the gum. Happy hunting!
As far as snus goes anything with general in the name is ok/good (except their wintergreen), Jakobsson’s wintergreen and mint are good I almost doubled my consumption after starting to use them. Classic is ok and I’m willing to bet enough to buy a roll that classic strong is excellent, icefruit is good occasionally but I wouldn’t order a roll though. Nick and Johnny, skurf, general white, onyx(kind of a love/hate snus very heavy flavor), extra sterk are good, overall I’d say nick and johnny and jakobson’s are the best. General white which I like is more of an acquired flavor and jakobsson’s, nick and johnny are less so. Thunder is pretty good for the price, the original is ok and frosted is good as long as you can handle the nicotine and heavy spearmint flavor. Ettan loose is good but the portions are so so at least to me, however it’s contained in the coolest looking can I’ve ever seen in my life.
Most definitely NOT economical however, if you are interested in grinding particular types of tobacco, the RYO market has some distinct varieties available.
I fanlly got my toque today and had a sniff of Rose. My great good gods mates. First its a a lot moister than it was in the little bit a friend lemee try, and more importantly, the experience I’d had to this point was NOTHING like having a fresh batch handled by the pros. There. . .there are no words for the simple and elegant beauty, the -power- behind the first few seconds, and my heavens I have never had a rose blend that was so spot on, not even when smoking rose leaves out of a hookah, as ridiculous as that sounds to me. Also there’s a bit of “rush” is the only word I can come up with for it. My whole body seems to have perked up as were it a lazy cat suddenly roused by the ball of string splayed before it. Consideration for a moment, the slight burn in my nose and ever-so-slight watering of my eyes and then everything was caught up with it. And its like I just decides to show a rose in my nose – only more pleasant than that idea sounds heh heh. I’m going to throw that stuff I made out, I was enjoying it to be honest, but after trying this – no way in hell I’ll touch that stuff now.
