I’ve been looking over the threads on this forum in which people have monster collections and, some other threads in which, people admit they’ll probable never use half of it. Also people keep-on ordering so it can’t be a usage thing, you obviously enjoy collecting, and so my question is this. What’s your daily snuff? You must have one or your collection would reduce over time And Did you want a big collection or, did it just happen as you were trying different snuffs and you then turned into a collector/user?
I don’t have a daily snuff. I have a rotation of about 10 that I know I can count on. All the rest is just sometimes snuffs. If I’m in the mood for them. I have a pretty small stash compared to some people, but I got them all to try and the one’s I like I buy more of, so for me it’s usage thing. I have enough to last me a year or more, but there are so many more to try… Usually I walk out the door with a SP or Toque toast.
I only own about maybe 20 snuffs, and I usually leave the house with only two or three. In fact, I’ve been snuffing since July and I’ve yet to empty a tin. I might finally empty my Packard’s Club dispenser today…
bigmick, I’m with you in this case. I love SP’s and Toasts and use them daily. When I leave the house, I always take some Toque Original with me. That’s my snuff. I do love the American scothes as well and I have enough to last me for at least 2 years. And, of course, my Dholakias, never want to be without them. The rest are all extras. I did not intentially started collecting. It was a mere matter of trying more and more snuffs. I now have more than 200 in my collection but many of them I won’t re-order. I’ve also made a lot of snuff myself and at present I have jars and jars of snuff sitting on my shelf. Don’t know when I ever will be able to finish them off. Might just start giving it away. The only other snuff I’m going to order next year, is a kilogram of Roderick’s “Spanish Jewel”. I know it will be good and I WANT it. I want to become a snuffer again and stop being a collector. To many snuffs cause confusion for me. In future I will only order my real favourites as I run out.
With all these exciting new snuffs coming stateside now, after the Christmas madness is over (and I’ve got a new battery in my car; it’s getting a mite weak in the morning), I do believe I will be ordering myself some snuff. For example, I haven’t tried any florals yet, and QWS Sandalwood and Dean Swift Inchkenneth sound interesting as well…some Dholakias (anybody try the Concord Grape?), and definitely more Americans, but oddballs like Maccoboy and Tube Rose…
It’s easy to end up a collector, as there is so many types of snuff out there. It’s interesting to try them(all), but then you end up with a big collection. I have a big collection right now, and maybe only 2 I might say I don’t like. But so often, I’ll see something that I am curious about, or something new and exotic(to me) becomes available, and I just want it. And the price factor, at least to me, is rather cheap, so making a $20-30 order once a month or so, will result in a lot of snuff very fast. Also some people can consume them faster than others. I am a slow consumer, even if I snuff all day, I have never emptied a tin, and most of them look untouched. I wish snuff was made in smaller tins, like little 1-2g thingys, because I have so much, which I can’t make a dent in, and yet I still like the fun of getting more. Kinda like snus, but I empty a can of snus in 3-4 days, but if you end up stockpiling snus, you get a whole bunch in the freezer taking up space, and then you are limited to get more, if you see something you want. I’m holding off buying any more snuff and snus till I use up what I have, and that’s going to be hard to resist the temptation, but I think I am boarderline, if not fullblown hoarder now.
@james I’m just at 1 month into the world of snuff now. In that time I’ve made 3 orders for a total of 21 snuffs. As you said, SO MANY out there to try lol. @iceman I looked into snuff for something different to augment the snus and vaping that keeps me from smoking. I’m not the type of person that collects things. Right. Between the few I’ve acquired already and the snuffs that are on my wish list I’d probably hit 100 for crying out loud! Being so new to this there remain enough types I have yet to try to really have a go to or daily snuff. Currently the Scotches, Garrett Sweet in particular, take care of my nicotine needs. WoS Chocolate/Orange is the 1st for me to have gained the status of “Never Run Out”. How about yourself?
@OTD I’ve never really been a collector of anything however, over the last couple years I have developed a thing for paper maps of places all over the world. Because I’ve just gone bankrupt I’m not able to make any impulse buys of snuff that I would like. It’s funny, I use the word “collect”, I’ve never been in the situation that I can’t afford nicotine. When I do get my hands on some cash I will start buying, and I’ll enjoy watching my collection grow. However, I think the mindset behind it will be more “stash” rather than “collect”
I have about 60 snuffs and use about 10 regularly. I bought them to try, but if I just had 10 I would not miss the 50 that live in my refrigerator. Occasionally, however I get stuck on one of the “seldom used” ones, so it is nice to have them.
My collection started as me just wanting to try a bunch of different snuffs, and has grown ridiculously large since then. However, I haven’t ordered any snuff now in months, and plan to empty several more tins before I do again. It’s good to have a big collection, but when it takes up too much room, it’s time to slow down.
Started out as a collector but now I am becoming more of a user. I have an awesome pine box about the size of a shoe box that I store all snuff in, so the snuff collection takes up very little room. Now that I’ve pretty much ordered everything that I was interested in, I am now working on using the collection. As cheap as snuff is, it is still too expensive in my opinion to let it just sit there and go to waste.
I must have tried 300 snuffs or so, but actually just take SP on a day to day basis or a toast or scotch. Ive never had much of a collection as I just give it away if I don’t like it - I’ve probably got less than 30 types at the moment. My 20 snuff boxes and 30 or so snuffs are all stored in a couple of polished boxes that held some fancy wine. Also I use the same snuff box every day - A silver Georgian one with my initials engraved on it. I would never have justified the cost but my best friend chanced upon it for a lot less than its worth in a small antique store; so my collection - if you could call it that - is very low key to say I’ve been snuffing for 30 years.
Well, I have to admit that I placed one more order with Nicotine Rush last night, but I honestly think it will be my last for a good while. I have only been at this around a year, but I already have probably close to 200 snuff varieties. Several of those are also 100g bags of schmalzler, and then I have at least 1 each of every American snuff, so it’s unlikely I’ll run out this decade. On average, I would say I use around 7-10g a week, but I dip into so many tins, I barely make a dent in any one tin. For me, one of the biggest joys of this habit is getting a package with 10 or 20 new snuffs to try. I’ll usually focus on a new order for a week or so, but then I’ll start back going through my collection. Despite all the variety, there are a few snuffs I have re-ordered once I ran out and would never want to be without. Here are a few of the snuffs I never want to be without: McChrystals: (O&G, Highland Ice and English Menthol) Pöschl- (Bayern Prise Brasil, Gletscher Prise, Redbull) American (RR Mills plain, Navy Sweet) Bernards (Zwiefacher, Amorstrinha) Toque (vanilla, C&B, spanish jewel) Hedges L260
Like others here, I’m an inadvertent collector, but my primary intent is to use. I’ve accumulated a large number and amount of snuff I don’t want in the process of figuring out what I like. I’ve identified a few I’ll be happy using into the future, about one of ten, and on that experience, I’ve managed to pare my ‘to try’ list down considerably, but bale-top and mason jars full of ‘tomorrow’s brides,’ serve as mute reminder that I got obsessively caught up in wide-eyed frenzy to try everything out there. Nevertheless, lists wait. Soon to be worse than my snuff buying habit, I’m starting to believe the snuffbox matters. Nothing like a big pinch from a bigmouth snuffbox to give one a sense of opulent well-being. Of course, I need a snuff-box acquisition disorder to go with the rest of my tobacco-related acquisition disorders. With the increase in pinch size, the rate of use has reached a new level as well.
@ Herzl, I’ve just now placed a bid on an antique silver snuff box on eBay.
Cool, good luck with it. I don’t know why the snuff coming out of a nice box makes the experience better, but I’m convinced.
I like both aspects it’s fun to have a variety but i tend to be an on and off snuffer, seems i go through phases for a few weeks i snuff like crazy then i’ll switch back to cigs, then it’s dip for awhile then snuff again in no particular order though. I do find however a collection with a nice variety is fun to bring out when you have a bunch of guests over seems theres a flavor in there that will catch even the most hesitant persons curiosity and they will usually try it once and then every time i see em i get requests to bring the snuff collection out.
The bid for the silver snuff box is at 70.00 GBP already with 4 days left. I stopped at 65.00 pounds. Our current exchange rate is R12.50 for 1 GBP.
I’ve gone completely mad just now and placed a bid for 80.00 GBP on the silver snuff box. I want that box so dearly.
There was a killer Tiffany that went by a couple days ago, I thought that might be the one you were after, but I really need to see this one now.
THe bids are moving in the direction of 100.00 GBP and I’m out.
I’m with ukiceman on stash rather than collecting. And since i move most of what I get into glass, my “collection” only consists of an emptied-out 50g Fribourg & Treyer tin with the label taken of I’ve tried most of the 13 varieties so I can say just let the imagination roll, the SJ in a fancy bottle not too different from the Bernards, an emptied out Sun Pari, and an American with just a cutout of the word SNUFF Black letter on Red background, from Square I think. I have yet to put these in one of those encasing from the hobby store. I’ll probably throw in a bullet and a spoon too. Small, but gets to the point. What are these curious containers? Those m’dear are evidence of a vice of some gentle-people.
The latest bid on my snuff box stands at 155.00 GBP
Pieter, is there a link to a pic of this box? I only ask as you say your out of the bidding.
@OTD, I’ve made one big blunder. Bidding was at 155.00 GBP and I wanted to check to what amount the bidder would go. So I bid 160.00 GBP and…the guy did not go any higher! So now I will have to pay R2,000.00 plus shipping which I guess will be another R150.00. I did not want to spend that kind of money on a snuff box. The worst about the whole thing is that I must still tell my wife about it. I don’t have a link to it but I will post pictures once I’ve received it. It’s quite a big box, 3 inches by 2 inches and half an inch deep. Solid silver, gold gilded inner and stamped made in 1908. It is in superb condition. I don’t know whether I must be glad or sad. Received the invoice just now, total amount due is R2,115.00
Ah, I’m thinking this is the one you, erm, “Won”?This one Pieter?Well, be glad as it’s yours now!
@OTD, yes that’s the one. I’ve told my wife about it and…my shares are very low at present. I’ll try and make it up to her tomorrow, take her out and buy her something nice like a hotdog or a doughnut. That’s all I’ve got money for at present. I’m lucky in that I have enough snuff to fill the box, don’t know when I will be able to order some more stuff again. At an average of R35.00 a tin, that’s 60 tins of snuff I could have bought. Maybe it’s a good thing that happened. It will give me time to dig into my collection.
Is this it?
Wow, that’s one hell of a lot of money for a box. Beautiful box which, I’m guessing will always hold its value
Is this it?
Yes Pieter, not only a beautiful box but one with a certain bit o’ class to it as well. And after the presentation of a hot dog to your wife, it will provide you good company while you are on the couch (-;
Congratulations on your box Pieter, and enjoy it.
@miamimark, yes that’s it. Thanks for posting the picture.
Merry Christmas Pieter!
Pieter, I understand your mixed feelings. I’ve been there. Ebay has been both vice and virtue for me. I however, will compliment you on acquiring a very handsome and respectable snuffbox. At the least you have the Christmas present you wanted that no one would have given you. I gave my wife hot dogs for Christmas too - a whole pack of them actually! That’s what you do when you are poor.
Looks to be a nice box, Pieter! Don’t let ‘buyer’s remorse’ ruin that for you. The way I see it, you made out like a bandit. You just gave someone a few pieces of paper with R’s on them and you get a nice snuffbox. Damn nice!!
After waiting for a month, I received my Walnut, with Maple inlay, snuff box from mrSnuff today. It is almost twice the size of a Patrick Collins box and I will use this one for my SP snuffs. I take a lot of SP snuff every day and that’s also the snuff I take with me when I leave the house. So the bigger box will do it’s job. I think I will keep the silver box for Toque Jewel (or whatever Roderick’s gonna call it).
Rarely depart from my usual snuffs these days - Irish and London Brown for natural snuffs and three traditional English snuffs, viz: S.P, Samuel Gawith’s Kendal Brown Original (1792 recipe) and Princes (Wilson’s or Tranter). The latter three complement tobacco flavour instead of overwhelming it with a bewildering range of additives. Other excellent snuffs from around the globe are available (the measure of excellence being subjective), but all those mentioned above have stood the test of time and stand defiant like Shakespeare’s galled rock swept by the wild and wasteful ocean. Long may they continue.
The 1908 snuff-box is a stylish and elegant item. What a shame boxes like this are not made any more. The quality in this box is assured by the wash of gold on the interior to prevent tarnishing.
Congratulations on acquiring such a fine work of art. It is a masterpiece and worth every cent. Enjoy it in good health, my friend. I am envious.
I’ve just now taken my first pinch of Toque Original from my “new” silver snuff box!
Went back in time to see what happened a year ago!
Oh deary me. I’ve only been snuffing close to 6 months and I estimate I have around 400 different snuffs already. But that’s typical of me. I’m a hoarder and collector. I enjoy hobbies where I can collect things. I won’t be happy until I’ve bought every possible snuff available. Why not? It’s very rare I dislike any snuff.
Good luck with the Brazil snuffs, and then there is the holy grail, the Jewel itself. This thread is certainly a blast from the past.
How’s that box doing Pieter? Sounds like a beautiful box, but the pictures are gone now. Damn Oscar, 400 snuffs!? You got it bad my man! I can’t imagine how you store it all, but it must be quite a sight. Cool. I’ve acquired quite a collection of snuffs, but all because I wanted to try them. Like most, I have half a dozen or so regulars and dip into the others as I feel moved. I love getting a new order in, it’s like Christmas once a month or so. There are always some I really like and a couple I could do without, but I will no longer let any of them go because I’ve learned I may like them some other day. Does that make me a collector? I do dig my desk drawer full of snuff stuff, that’s for sure. I love the aroma that comes out when I roll it open. I have a small and growing little collection of snuff spoons too. And a couple boxes and a couple small flasks. Hm. Maybe I have it pretty bad too…
