Well, whenever you’re ready reviews are always good to read! Captain Black? He was the Mysteron double agent in Captain Scarlet, wasn’t he…?
I am interested in knowing your thoughts about the Capt Black snuff, as I’d only found out about its existence yesterday when perusing a list of the brands owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group. CB is chiefly known as a decent OTC pipe tobacco (and cigarillo, not so decent).
Hi there, well here come my thoughts about Capt Black @cpmcdill . I find it quite fascinating, because it is said that its nicotine is not among the strongest, but for some reason it gives me one of the strongest reactions of all the snuffs I have tasted. This might also be partly due to its high menthol rate. It is light brown, very finely ground, and a nice tobacco, but the menthol covers the tobacco smell even more than in Hedges L260, in my opinion. Personally I like it, especially for clearing the nose, but it is not among my favorites. I can get it rather easily through the internet seller I usually buy (if you are interested, let me know), but would not go many miles to get it otherwise.
Just took a pinch of Viking Brown, which I did not use for some time… WONDERFUL in my opinion. Very smokey and pure tobacco. I even prefer it to Thor’s Hammer!
@Rudolf, thanks for the description of Capt Black. I did not know that it’s a menthol, as the CB smoking products tend more in the vanilla range of flavor. Menthol snuffs are something I use rarely, and I’ve already got enough of those (Bernard and Poschl, which are very good), so I don’t think I’d take the trouble to seek out the CB snuff.
@Rudolf If you can, try Tranter’s Dr Johnson. It’s a SP style snuff, and to me has one of the best scents of all the snuffs in my collection.
Thanks, @Franknsnuff, I am happy this is a good one, it is on the little list of things I ordered from Tranter.
Hi, @cpmcdill, if you are not too much into menthol then CB is definitely not for you. Just to add to my comment of yesterday: I took a pinch of Hedges L260 this morning, which also is heavy menthol. But a few moments after you take it, even there the tobacco taste gets into your nose at some point. This is not the case with CB, it will stay menthol through to the end of its impression.
I have found some crystalline looking whitish fibre in my open tin of Swiss Menthol Snuff. Does anybody have an idea what this could be and mean?
I received my package with eight (!) types of the Frederick Tranter snuffs a couple of days ago! So far I have tasted three of them, are all a bit similar at first look, but I will probably get more in-depth feelings when I use them more often. The other five will follow, I shall keep you posted! These are the flavours I have: SP Gold Label Regency Dr. Johnson Thyme & Lemon Country Doctor Grand Cairo 29 Special
@Rudolf Let us know on those… i am interested in the flavor of them I also found the ones i tried very similar
I will @Derek_007, in the next few days, when I shall have an overview. What I can say already, is that the tin boxes are VERY full, which is good on one hand, but you have to be very careful when opening them in order not to spill the great powder

Could be 1 of 3 things or a combination of all. Salt ,Sugar, Menthol. No worries just stir them in.
Thanks, @basement_shaman, I did and it tasted just normal
I often find with a new order that the snuff scents seem strangely similar (several successive esses swiftly said), but after a few days my nose finds the differences in them. Clever old thing, my nose.
hello @HR_pufnsnuff thanks for this comment. You are right, and this is why I am a bit holding back with my comments on the types of snuff by Frederick Tranter. Will follow in a week or so!
