Im interested In this as a hybrid between dip and pipe tobacco, like scotches can be snuffed or dipped. I’m just wondering what kinds of twists people would reccomend for a beginner or just something they like or don’t like. Any information on twist tobacco would be greatly appreciated.
All the way down: STRONG stuff !!! You can chew it and later smoke it in your pipe. So, it´s rather cheap tobacco entertainment but not for the faint of heart. It´s real strong material, the ones from UK like the ones from the USA or Germany.
The pig tails that Mr Snuff sells made by Gawith Hoggarth are all dual purpose chew/twist pipe tobacco. I would be wary about using them if something like straight Cope is too strong for you. Chewing has always been a minority activity in the UK, almost entirely amongst the mining community, which is now mostly gone and leaving old miners aside I doubt there are more than a few hundred users in the entire country. A better option might be Oliver Twist tobacco bits - these are little pellets of flavoured or plain twist but cut up into handy bits slightly smaller than a tic-tac.
Ill look into the oliver twists. If I can’t get those do you think it’d be possible to grind a cut oof the rope into teensy bits? I have a grinder I use to cut my pipe tobacco finer.
I suppose you could chop little bits off a piece of twist; the Oliver Twists are just pre-chopped for you.
Or use a cigar cutter. Works perfect.
I’ve heard that Oliver Twist bits are extremely weak though.
Well for starters I’m just getting a small twist or two with my next order from mr snuff. I figure even if I like it if it’s that strong it’ll last a while. Are there certain flavors that are more beginner friendly or must tries or should I just order flavors that sound good?
The underlying tobacco is very strong so it’s not really a question of the flavouring helping you out much - just go for whatever you like to sound of - it will all pack a punch.

they are.
They are indeed. I’m only talking about real twist being strong.
I just threw a twist each from GH and SG into my cart on mr. Snuff along with a tin of grimm and triepel. From what I read in a review the Grimm comes in seperate sticks rather than a rope. How does it compare otherwise?
That’s what I like to see… a SCIENTIFIC MINDSET!
When in doubt, experiment! If you don’t like it, you haven’t invested a whole lot of money into it.
I’m a bit leary about other people’s opinions. MY personal taste is unique to me.
I figure if I don’t like it one of my friends will or I’ll keep coming back to it for nicotine in situations where I don’t want to be worried about brown stuff in or around my nose or when I’m doing lawn work and can’t stop to clean my hands and take a pinch as often as I’d like. Plus if I don’t find it palatable for oral use I can smoke it too.
The Grimm and Triepel is tragically small, think the size of and eraser on a pencil. Rather good flavor, you just have put six or seven pieces in to make it work.

Totally agree. The taste isnt bad at all imho. I would like to have bigger pieces or even better, this stuff in to a shredder and then you have european dip like GOLD RIVER
Good to know. I’ll start with one of those pieces and work my way up from there.
Would love to have a taste of all this rural twists from the Appalachia region. Like the Cumberland.
oh so Grimm and triepel is like the oliver twists which although tasty are a rip off if you have a need for nicotine.

OT and G&T dont work in term of nicotine imho
I’ve tried a few oliver twists just to have something diffrent and I had to use two pellets not to feel it but to reduce my cravings to a point of not wanting to murder someone for a pinch of snuff. Though I found if you unwrap one oliver twist so it’s a single strip of tobacco leave and lay it across your gums it gives a decent but very short lived nicotine hit. Not worth buying it to try but if you already have some it’s one way to get something out of it. I guess I won’t be trying the Grimm. Unless I find myself with too much money.

I think the fact, that G&T dont react to our times is sad. I am sure, they could easily produce some “strong” sticks to chew on. Same goes for OT.
The problem seems to be that they’re made by old ladies who probably have some secret technique for stealing half the nicotine from them and bringing it home in their purses. Then reconstructing it into a strong plug.
This thread has mecurious too. I’m meaning to try English twist for a little while, it always just seemed kind of pricey, but I’ll probably try a one off my next big order. @prismaster I’m not really in the Appalachia region (but not too far either) anyway I can keep an eye out for you. You might want to post your wish list in the Buy-sell-trade thread. I update mine approximatley every two months.
Actually technically speaking, bob is in the Appalachian mountains
near very near. Like I can go walk there and have a few times. Though calling anything near me a mountain is kind of silly as technically we only have big hills.

Thank you.
Just tried a piece of GH maple twist about the size of a dime, mostly leaf. I like the rough tobacco flavor and I’m not overwhelmed by nicotine, though I can tell its better than the Oliver twists I’ve tried from a sampler pack I picked up in NC in strength of flavor and nicotine.
@prismaster You seem to know alot about twist, could you tell me approximetly how long 50g would last, on average based on enough usage to supress nicotine withdrawl?
I threw a good sized chunk of twist into my grinder and shredded into something more like long cut and I’ve never appreciated the flavor or nicotine more. I don’t think I’ll be using twists another way from now on.
@snuffmeister dont make me red!! ^^ well, to be honest, it is rather hard to estimate, but 50g would last you a bit i guess. if you think to take 1-2g at a time, you would have 25 times to go. from his Kendal twists for example, you only need rather small pieces since it is heavy stuff. for american twist, which are hard also (imho), you dont need more. long story short: it is a economical tobacco form (and you can use your chewed pieces in your pipe later - in case you smoke pipe).
Anyone know how Oliver Twist chew is cured? The reason I ask is coz it is Danish and was wondering if they use the same methods as the Swedes do for snus.
@Ubert all I know is those little bits don’t give me much nic
The Picannel(sp?) bits are pretty good and seem like a supercharged OT. Not to mention a better value in the sense of volume for the money. Mr Snuff had them in stock last time I checked…
I rather chew red man leaf. If I took out a leaf and cut it with a razor an inch long and 1/4 inch wide I could get hundreds of those little Oliver twists out of a 6 dollar bag of red man , beechnut or any other leaf chew.
Perhaps, but you still might like the Picannels, with one or two of them I’d probably get the same satisfaction as with a wad of average looseleaf- maybe it’s just me. The old Oliver Twist Seniors were pretty good though, two of them could get a heavy smoker of strong RYO’s (me) through a plane trip…
i ordered some pigtail and twist chewing tobacco but i wonder if spitting is necessary?
@linguist You can gut the spit it produces, but it’s not too comfortable.
I bought a select of GH and SG twists about a year ago. I didn’t like them. They all aggravated my throat with the juice. So eventually I ground them all go and made snuff out if them. I’ve recently been told I should have been spitting the juice. Is this true? The kick is great.
@SnuffySnuff maybe you took bigger pieces. I will cut them tiny pieces like oliver twist and then i will make a review here.
I would love to find some American twist but I don’t think I live in the right part of the south.
Have you tried pigtail. Its between a quarter and a half inch across. Flavour doesn’t seem to matter as it is lost in the strong tobacco taste. I have been using GH Kendall pigtail on and off for years. It needs to be fresh and soft. I cut a slice about 1/8 inch and park it between my cheek and gum. Just leave it there and it will last for hours. Very economical.
I tried the Kendal Black XX (think that’s what it is) and I found it disgusting as a chew, tasted like licking the inside of a chimney that’s never been cleaned, but it was tasty in a pipe. It was pretty strong but nothing insane.
