I’ve turned my close friend onto snuff and even gave him his own tin of White Elephant. I’ll be gifting him a box next week once it arrives. He’s a smoker and says it has curbed his desire to smoke as much, and further reports that he really enjoys it. I have also turned a co-worker and my wife onto snuff enough to at least try it; my wife has tried a few at this point. I had my boxes on the bar Sunday while watching the game and the bartender asked about it, but would not try any. Has anyone else turned others onto snuff?
Yes I try to hand out mini tins & tapboxes or bottle up 1g samples to anyone who seems interested in starting snuff or to promote a snuff that I think is a “hidden gem”.
I haven’t been able to get anybody else to try it except for my wife who doesn’t care for it at all. Everybody looks like I’m crazy when I offer it to them. It seems to be cigarettes or dip here, no interest in anything else.
I’ve probably given away a couple of dozen tins when I’m on the town. Sometimes I regret that in the morning. I don’t push it to anyone, and only gift a tin if they seem to genuinely interested.
A friend of mine now has a mini collection of Wilsons, Toque, Bernard and Poschl. I know smokers who are interested but won’t take the plunge as they think it’s weird. To me though, not as weird as setting light to small white sticks and inhaling a smoke that could kill them.
To date the reception has ranged from bewilderment to absolute shock that one would ‘put that stuff up your nose’. I tend to bring up snuff when I am out with new people so as to remove any ‘concerns’ that may come up later in the evening when they see me snuffing something. Most everyone at work knows I take snuff and none have expressed any interest in trying it. As of yet I have had perhaps one person show even faint interest in snuff, and that’s fine as I am not marketing it but rather increasing knowledge of it.
I think Im a master on turning others into snuff users hahahah, When I go to the gym I always carry some snuffs with me, and now the gyms owner is a snuff user and three more guys use snuff sometimes. 5 of my friends use snuff when they come to my house and always when I find a friend I didnt see a long time ago, I offer some snuff. I have two nicknames here. “Tobacco” and “Rapé”(“snuff” in portuguese lol
Most of my friends have taken to using it occasionally and will sometimes buy/ask for a small tin. Some people at work will take a pinch now and then too, especially night-shift. Only one friend became a regular snuff-user and he was never a regular cigarette smoker, but he’s gotten into it in a big way. The strangest person I introduced was a mentally ill guy in a trailer park who was a neighbor of a friend, I gave him a bunch of white elephant he really liked it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the strength and MAOIs and stuff are good for mental illness.
Well… another convert last night. I went out to the bar, which I rarely do, and saw an old acquaintance. I hit him up for a cigarette because my friend had lost his rolling papers and needed a smoke. He gave me a couple smokes and I offered him some snuff and he freaked out. He hadn’t done snuff in years he said, and really liked it. I offered him the option of Havana Toast, Spanish Gem, and/or Kailash because that’s what I had on me. He chose Kailash and did a huge hit, started crying, and sneezed a few times. I went out for a smoke and came back in and he jokingly pocketed the smash box of Kailash. I told him to keep it and let him have the one with the Havana Toast in it too. He was psyched and couldn’t stop talking about how fun and legal it was to take snuff. My friend offered him a take of Thor’s Hammer and he enjoyed it as well. I really like when snuffing is going on out in public and people are enjoying themselves. I also told him about the forum and Mr. Snuff.
I find it a very hard thing to get anyone interested at all in snuff. Maybe it’s an Australian thing, as tobacco is hated here and we have the toughest tobacco laws in the world.
A couple months ago, I gave a pinch to the IT guy at work (regular smoker) who was curious about it when he saw me doing a little. Unfortunately, all I had on me was McC O&G and he didn’t listen to me when I quoted Uncle Squinty’s line about “you’re not snorting lint off the carpet”! Well, he did, and now he says “HELL NO” whenever I offer. But the nightshift maintenance guy (a non-smoker who never took snuff) tried a little of my Gawith Apricot about a week ago and he absolutely loves it. On his third visit to my office for another pinch, I gave him the tin and said ENJOY! He thanked me again the other day and said he’ll return the favor when he receives his first order from MrSnuff. He’s definitely into it!
I’ve only gotten one person to try snuff–a fellow pipesmokersforum.com member (and it was a hit). There is a big stigma about insufflating anything, I guess (and I admit I was a bit hesitant myself when I started).
I have found that many pipe smokers are interested in trying snuff. I am an example.

@fredh you probably turned more people on to snuff than most with your piece back in June on the Pipes Magazine Radio Show. It was my favorite show and you did a great job talking about our wonderful hobby. Again, nice job!
Thank you, @Jim. I am told by the Pipes Magazine people that their radio show episodes average 10,000 individual listeners. I hope some of them took the time to visit Mr. Snuff, not to mention Snuffhouse, as I mentioned both! Last year at the Chicago Pipe Show in May, I was giving out Abraxas Cafe 11 and a few other snuffs and guys were lining up to try it. It blew them away and some tell me that they are still into snuff. http://www.snuffhouse.org/discussion/8859/abraxas-cafe-11-opens-some-eyes-and-nostrils-and-blows-some-minds-in-chicago#latest If I were really serious about getting converts, I would ask Dave (@MrSnuff) or @Roderick (Toque) or whoever to give me a bunch of samples that I could take to Chicago next May and set up a snuff table–not to sell so much as to provide samples and proper instructions for how to take snuff. This has never been done before to my knowledge and I have attended at least 50 pipe shows around the USA. Dealers display pipe tobaccos samples so why not snuff? And Chicago is the largest pipe show in the world and is attended by several thousand (not sure exactly how many) pipe lovers over 3 days. If one of the pipe smokers here on Snuffhouse, who is also a snuff enthusiast, is interested he might want to contact Dave or Roderick and ask how they feel about doing some promotion of their products, with their websites and products openly and plainly on display. I do not have the time to do it as my time is well occupied from that Thursday through Sunday during the Chicago Show. But maybe someone would want to do it. Just a thought…
I’m not going to get pushy about it. I’d much rather have people look at me askance and think that I’m weird… That way I can keep my pleasure all to myself (and a couple of guys at the monastery.)
At the end of a long Thanksgiving get-together (and plenty of beer), my future son-in-law decided to try my snuff. I do regret that all I had on me was NB Madras in bullets. I warned him it was probably not the best snuff for a beginner. Of course, he hit is a little too hard with predictable results. When we got back to my house, he tried a pinch of Hedges, which went a little better. Don’t know if he’ll be a convert or not. Oh, I also sent him off with his first portion of General Original–yet to hear how that went.
Well if your a good father in law @mecompco you could persuade him that it was in his best interests. How does your daughter feel about it?
It’s not easy to get converts. Among pipe smokers there is interest here in Holland too, but generally spoken cigar lovers stay far away. These are the niche-smokers of expensive Cuban cigars who light up in distinguished “lounges” where they meet and smoke. Then we have our own Dutch cigar industry with a few factories still remaining (whose staff is very interested in snuff since they used to make and sell it from their leftovers in the past). These lounge visitors tramp through the city until they find another lounge or café that allows smoking, they neglect snuff when being presented with it. Then there are lots of labour class rolling their own cigs who haven’t got a clue of snuff still existing but they want to know all about it when I show them.
Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that one of the many chemicals they out in cigarettes is something that makes them think snuff is weird. I’ve lost several tins of snuff to various people who worked in the same store as me who have enjoyed in and then buggered off to work elsewhere, but I hope maybe they still do it.
