I bought some tube rose recently. Snuff spilled out when I opened it because the metal lid was a bit bent. That’s when I noticed the entire can was also metal. None of the conwood co. Snuffs I bought locally are like this. They all came in a cardboard can with metal lids and bottoms. Does anyone know when conwood stopped making metal containers? Wow, I hope I didn’t get a tin that’s been on the shelf for decades. Especially if it wasn’t well sealed.
Not sure, maybe mid to late '90s. They’re actually all plastic now, so even the carboard ones are a couple years old.
good to know
Is yours the smaller tin? My folks brought me up a 4.65 oz. Tube Rose from the states earlier in the year which is all metal. They also brought me a large Honey Bee and a large Superior which are both plastic. The health warning is the same size on all 3 which leads me to believe that they are all from the same era - hopefully recent.
Superior and Honey Bee are both made by Swisher, and have been all plastic for some years. I’ve not seen the large Tube Rose cans ever so I can’t comment. The current health warnings are now always on the face (logo side) of the label and occupy about 1/3 of that territory.
If it don’t have a bar code or U.P.C it’s before 1974. If it does a SKU # could tell what year if you had a SKU reader. If the seal was broken that snuff more than likely has lost it’s attributes. But don’t chuck it. You can make it into a useable product by scenting and rehydrating. First thing get it out of the can and into a jar. Then you can play with it. Best to Hydrate in small weekly batches. any distilled liquid will work, use and eye dropper a couple drops adds plenty enough. As for scenting pick one and go with it. You can scent and hydrate with fruit rind.booze, extracts, flavorings, oils, flowers and other things Also snuff makes a good bug insecticide and has other uses
or even use some tube rose essential oil and give it some real flavor. http://store.isisbooks.com/TUBEROSE\\_ESSENTIAL\\_OIL\\_1\\_dram\\_p/tubr.htm
I don’t think it’s stale. Thank goodness. It’s 1.15 oz. It’s not as sweet as the peach, but it’s certainly a sweet scotch. Not at all like the honest or W.E. Garret. But it does have an earthy quality to it. It reminds me of dried oak leaves. Still has a bit of a burn and body to it. It’s just as dry as all the other scotches I’ve tried thus far. Waiting for my British snuffs to arrive. I bought some little jars at work today (hobby Lobby). They’ll be perfect for keeping it.
I have never seen the metal can either. My wife picked me up a 1.15 can this summer when she was in Georgia and it was a cardboard can with metal top.
