Tripletech

Wonder if you guys have any suggestions…just bought a new Tripletech box in mahogany. Problem is all the moving parts are miserably stiff (i.e. I have literally cut and scraped my fingers trying to open it). I was excited to fill it up and now read that snuffgear won’t accept any returns once used. Do you guys have any ideas? I was thinking about sanding it down, since wax had little effect.

put a moist snuff in it

I really have no experience, but, it could be too humid, or not enough? Take a shower w/it on the vanity, or, dry it out in a food dehydrator(maybe not).

I figured humidity would make the wood swell and make I even tighter. Interesting…

@Pot poe, no that will do the opposite and tighten it further. Putting a moist snuff in a wood box is ususally a bad idea becuase of eduction which will cause the box to get too loose. However, if your box is too tight it should loosen it. Taking a hot shower with the box in the room is the advice I usaually give for boxes that are too loose.

I just want to add, that try all non invasive tactics before resorting to sanding which is irreversable.

Absoulutely. Super disappointed after all the rave reviews I read, though.

Mine seem to have become less stiff after several days use. Give some time to try the methods Xander’s offered and try to keep using it. Don’t be sad, be happy that it’s keeping your snuff safe and not leaking all over your pocket!

Glass, half full, eh @Scurvy? I hoped the wood might wear down a bit with some use, the problem is getting it to slide even a bit; It takes tremendous force and effort to even budge it at all. I anything, my CoC is hostage in the damn thing!

basement shaman- right on, I like to consume hempseed products (hempini or shelled hempseed) I even told my doc I use it because it’s I (believe) the best vegetarian source of omega-3’s and omega-6’s.

It’s not that I can’t stay on topic it’s that oh look a butterfly.

I had the same problem when my new tech arrived. I was so excited , then found out I couldn’t open the damn thing. After days and days of making my thumbs sore, it finally loosened up enough for me to put snuff in it. I have had it a few weeks now and its ok to use, still a little stiff but usable. I wish I had known about the moist snuff and shower room tips a few weeks ago though.

@SnusAlarm I would hold off a bit on sandpaper. A tight fit is the norm for these boxes and with use it will become more user friendly. Now I don’t have a mahogany one but I would try out some of the suggestions given. Give it a bit of time and I am sure you will be happy with the tripletech.

Thanks, @willc . Like I said, when I say say “tight” I mean there is skin missing from my fingers! I couldn’t find a single review out there that mentioned anything about these boxes being such a pain to break in. So far, wax has turned it from nearly impossible to usable but uncomfortable. On the one hand I’m kind of upset-when you buy something with that kind of markup (not that I dont respect the kind of labor that goes into something like this being an artist by profession myself) one tends to expect a quality and usability reflective of the price tag. I’ll just assume it’s a defect in the humidity of the wood and will correct itself in time. Definitely would be very hesitant to try another of his pieces, but I really hope to eat those words in the future.

There is a possibility you did get a bad one, things like this do happen. Did you take the top all the way of when you first got it? I did this to one of mine and if it goes in backwards the fit is not so good. It would not hurt to contact Snuffgear and they may be able to help. Good luck.

All wooden snuffboxes slacken off in time with use, however hard to open they are to begin with. I have had ones that were almost impossible to get open. Sooner or later some of the wood around the closure wears down by a couple of mills. Best not to hasten that process because when it does naturally slacken you could end up with a snuffbox that comes open in the pocket.
