I’m not a huge fan of Toque. The same grinds, the same sort of scents. And then the insane scents, like cheese and bacon - a monstrosity! But Berwick Brown, is something else. it goes to show how different grinds and wonderful scents go hand in hand. No offense is meant to Roderick. His cutting edge ideas on snuff are to be applauded and his entrepreneurship commendable.
Cheese & Bacon was a joke, if you recall. The insane thing is that a lot of people liked it! I hate it, myself.
Roderick seems to me to be an excellent businessman who goes the extra mile to try to please his customers. Naturally, not every Toque snuff is going to appeal to every customer, but I think the number of positive comments about Toque on this board and elsewhere are a pretty good sign that Toque’s business model is a sound one. As far as variety goes, give the guy a break. He’s only been at this for what? 4 years or so? When Toque is as old as WoS, there will probably be just as many varieties, with something to please every nose, and in an enormous variety of scents and grinds. Personally, I don’t like every Toque flavor either, but I can recognize the work that goes into making a snuff, even if it’s not to my liking.
I know I sound like a broken record, but Toque’s Menthol and Natural Toast are hard to beat.
yeah it’s amazing how quickly he gets new ones out too us. I really like seeing the line up starting to fill out a little bit.
@pipenSnusnSnuff:This is an open forum, I’m not condemning the man, only suggesting… different grinds! Should I tell him: Oh I love everything that you do. Can i have an autograph? No! I say, Berwick Brown is the only snuff of his I like because: A: the grind is nice and B: the aroma lasts more than 30 seconds. I don’t expect Roderick to be Samuel Gawith after 4 years, but good and bad input can help. That’s all. lol
Well in all fairness, Wilsons doesn’t have much variety in their grinds either. 90% of their snuffs seem to use the same base.
But I’m not the biggest fan of WoS, either. LMAO! Xander, I’m an SG man!
Since I haven’t sampled SG’s snuffs yet, I can’t comment on them. But I do like some of their pipe tobaccos very much – at least the ones that don’t have that nasty “Lakeland soap” flavoring.
Indeed. SG has the most variety in grinds of any company, and has many more rappee styles than anyone. Even their SPs have a wide distinction between them. No. 1 High Mill seems to be a standard base for many of their snuffs, but so too does SP Scotch. @PSS: Gawith Hoggarth has a Lakeland snuff. I love it!
For all I know, the Lakeland scent might work in a snuff. But in a pipe, it’s like chewing on a bar of floral bath soap. Not appealing to me.
I like SG’s snuffs a lot. There are many varieties and they are well done. There are only a few that I have not tried and there are only a few that I have tried that I have not liked. But to each their own. I encourage Roderick to try different grinds and maybe perfect what has already been done. Is it possible? of course.
Perhaps the reason for the Toque’s current lack of variety in different grinds is, that the coarser grinds (rappees etc.) might be more difficult and time consuming to produce? PhilipS writes in this thread:
Black rappee is made by pounding dark tobacco (often from Kentucky and Virginia) in brine like cut tobacco. It is then left to ferment - sometimes for several years - in cool rooms after being compressed into batches of several hundredweights each. Thereafter it is pulverised and remoistened with brine. Traditionally it is gros (coarse) and moist. The method of production is known as the Paris Method because of its one-time associations with France. […]
FWIW, Berwick Brown is one of my favorites in Toque line.
I’m only waiting for Toque’s Spanish Jewel. I’m quiete happy with the rest. I’ve got them all and I enjoy them all.
@ Roderick Is that to imply a new Toque flavor or 2 soon? right on!
Toque snuffs are a bit ‘samey’ but really, every company’s with a wide range is because there are only a limited number of bases that tend to be used. I only use a small bunch of flavours - like Sp’s and toasts - and I think they do those as well as anybody. Ive been a life-long WoS user but I always have some Toque in my rotation. I think they stepped into the big time when they started to sell the three main grinds - (if you weren’t around, it was only medium snuffs for a long time). One thing about Toque though; there is a real will to develop the product which I really admire, and for a start up in what must be a very challenging industry to get into, the progress so far is pretty astounding.
I think that most forget that Toque has only been in the game for about 4 years, I’d say they are right on track. It’s pretty had to compare a company that young to one that still uses equipment made in 1750!
I’m waiting for the Cod 'n Capers.
One of the things I appreciate most about the toque flavor line up is the sameness of base tobacco and grind. I find it easy to snuff while at work in the public eye without any surprises that some other snuffs have like black nose drool or high sneeze factors etc… I like most of the flavors too and am glad that they don’t hang around too long. The Berwick Brown is one that I do NOT like. I think it is a feeble attempt at a rappee style grind and the violet is a bit annoying for me as well. The flecks of larger pieces always make me sneeze too. The toasts I would agree are fantastic, enough to make me wish I was a fan of toasts. Maybe some day. Glad to hear that you have some new stuff for us soon Roderick. Always a pleasure.
(gets the credit card out) New stuff?? Where?? C’mon clock…start that tickin’
