Toque Toast & Marmalade

J

I’ve been snuffing Toque T & M today and I think it’s a wonderful toast, but I can’t detect any orange at all. No matter how hard I try, I get no marmalade whatsoever. It smells exactly like the Natural Toast. Should the orange aroma be pronounced? Is my nose broken? Could this be a case of a mislabeled tin?

S

I really like T&M. The orange should be obviouse without being candy-ish

N

I got a 10g tin of T&M that was open in the bag. The bag contained all the snuff, but it seemed to be a plain toast also. Maybe exposure to the air dissipates the orange scent.

W

I have a 25g tin of it and the orange isn’t real strong but its there.

L

I found the orange to be very pronounced. It was very different from my Toque Natural Toast. On the other hand, I got a tin of Grapefruit awhile back in which I had trouble detecting the Grapefruit.

X

Those citrus scents fade with aging and exposure to air. Such is the cost of natural scentings. Get a fresh tin.

Z

I think it’s more an orange blossom scent, rather than orange juice or zest scent. I light bouquet…(did I say THAT !). Probably the same stuff that they use in St. Clements.

S

Yeah its very slight, at least in the tin I have of it. Its there but you have to really look for it.

B

so it’s orange?? Sounds good then.

J

Thanks for your comments. My tin must have been from older stock.

W

I think I’ve discovered exactly how to ‘re-orange’ a tin of toast and marmalade. I have a little bottle of Loranne Gormet Orange Oil, natural, Contents: Natural Orange Oil. (this stuff is extremely potent – use caution!) I have approximately 1/2 a 25g tin of Toque Toast and Marmalade that has become less orange-y so I took my small flat-head screwdriver I sometimes use as an alternate sniffing tool (its really small, good for really difficult snuffs like Dholakia White or I just really want a minuscule sniff of anything else) and I made sure it was clear of any snuff, dipped its tip right in the little tiny bottle of orange oil then dipped it in the Toque tin and stirred around a while, making sure to knock all the snuff back in the tin and stirring some more, then I closed the tin up and gave it a few good shakes and I’m going to leave it sit a while, it already seems to have helped a lot though. This orange oil smells so exactly like the orange that is in the T&M and St Clements that I have to wonder if this might even be the very exact natural flavoring that Roderick uses for it.

J

I have several 25gm tins of Roderick’s flavored toasts, all with faded scents yet quite distinguishable from one another. The Toast and Marmalade is pale and sharp while the Bourbon is dark brown and smooth. The Whiskey Honey is medium brown and still sweet with honey that I don’t think will ever fade. The fourth tin in this special set which I keep in a beautiful wood box is the Spanish Gem. Fade as they will, I will not be messing with these masterpieces but for a little pinch now and again. I see this set lasting forever unless I start favoring toasts a little more.

A

Also, Toque snuffs are notoriously delicate because Roderick uses 100% natural ingredients. I find that unless I decant the bulk and just fill a snuff box on a daily basis that the aroma goes less and less with repeated opening of the tin.

C

I think the snuff that actually benefits from a little scent degrading is Lime Toast. If it fades a little, it taste superb!

N

Lime Toast tastes like green lifesavers.

Z

I’m fortunate to have 4 citrus trees in my back yard ( 2 orange, 1 grapefruit, 1 tangerine) which are just now starting to bloom. So I can take a blossom, and stick it into a snuff tin to add a little extra to any snuff having a citrus note. These trees smell so good when in bloom, I often just position my hammock between two of them in the evening and drift off into olfactory nirvana.

B

that sounds wonderfull to me.

J

Although blossom and zest are two different things.

J

I, too, feel that the Lime Toast benefits from some airing. Didn’t like it that much at first, but now it’s growing on me. Same thing happened with Pomegranate.

B

I wanted to like this one for I heard great things about T&M. At first it didn’t seem too bad, rather a mix of natural/candy orange aroma. After spending a couple of days with this, I decided I just couldn’t get myself to enjoy it. Lime Toast is very good, but this flavor isn’t in the same league. Sadly, I won’t be buying this again. Good try though.

B

This happens sometimes. Generaly my experience is that much lauded snuffs are great. I personaly find McCrystals snuffs to have a gross base (I always detect a souriness that other snuffs lack, I swear it is something about my nose). Then the toque peanut butter doesn’t agree with my sense of smell somehow it really grosses me out I can’t put my finger on why (like the half naked woman in the famous turkish movie “the deathless doctor satan”, seriously she is shriveling but I can’t see one thing that would make her so). Though I when it happens the other way it’s much worse since that becomes a snuff that probably won’t be made any longer, for some reason I really love the old poschel snuff cheif bull which they don’t seem to make anymore. Seriously it’s the fakest random fruit scented snuff I ever tried and I loved it. It seems I’ll never snuff that one again. So basicly just saying it’s better to say I’ll never snuff this one again becuase you choose to then to have it decieded for you.

H

Bumping this thread ‘cos I got my tin of T & M t’other day. Well now, what an incredibly nice snuff I find. Yeah, the orange is subtle, but so it is in marmalade!! Go and eat some, and it sure ain’t like you’re eatin’ an orange!! Marmalade is way sweeter, and if you only like the thin cut stuff, it ain’t that orangey, just a lingering taste of it. Anyway, great snuff and mixes well with Toque Christmas Pudding. Spent a whole day snuffin’ nothing but… oooooooo toasty, spicy, clovey, citrusy, cinnamony wonderment of beauty and bombs…

N

To me T&M tastes like a mix of Natural Toast and St. Clements

S

@Nachman Same here, when I got my Mr Snuff order all the 10 gm toque were like that, the T&M had no orange smell I can detect, it was stale upon arriveal I suppose, the Lime Toast is a little off as well, that my explain why the Espresso I got in the same order was disappointing, very weak if any coffee scent. The Toque snuffs were all in bagggies and all had spilled into the baggies, the other snuffs (F&T WoS) were sealed. Disappointing to get stale snuff when I made a large order.

F

@n9inchnails Nail on the head there…perfect description!!

J

I really love t&m! I noticed that the orange smell was much more pronounced when i got to the bottom of the last tin i finished. The last 10-20 pinches had way more flavor than all the first pinches. Anybody ever experience something similar with this or any other snuff??

A

Just got this and first impression is very good; bittersweet orange marmalade scent, quite sharp but pleasant and lovely toast base. Goes well with tea&biscuits&marmalade like F&T Seville.

M

@Tobe i realy like this one ! I do detect a hint of citrus. Very nice and for a toast good to snuff. I will dig in this one some more today.

T

@Marielle32 It is good! I don’t hear too much said about it, but to me it’s one of the best Toque snuffs there is.

N

I have a tin 25g that must be as old as the first offerings that toque sold. Have always kept in the freezer in a mason jar. Several months ago I placed an order, grabbed a new tin of T&M in the mix. Old VS. New has changed to the more toast but still has great orange scent. Just to say the vintage T&M still is as good as the current mix. (8 years oldish) I still prefer and hope when my newer ages it will be the same or better.
