Toque Snuff - Which aromas last the longest?

T

Hi forum,

Is it just my bad luck or do some Toque snuffs generally have very little aroma? I’ve tried two now, Blueberry which I found subtle and just recently Grapefruit, which really was a huge disappointment, it has almost no aroma whatsoever…

I hear great things about Toque, but have yet to experience anything wonderful. What’s the secret to the best aroma to start with?

B

secret? none really  nose are all diffrent.

A

Im not a great user of scented snuffs although I have tried most of the Toque range - there is one area, imo, where Toque excels and that is in producing good, strong workaday snuffs like original and quit. I think the flavoured ones are quite delicate because the ingredients are all natural. If you leave the top off a flavoured Toque the scent will go very quickly for that reason. I guess the secret is we all have varying degrees of olfactory sensitivity.

T

Wilsons of Sharrow claims to use all natural scents as well and I have yet to have the same experience ( lack of aroma ) with any of the ones I’ve tried, even after several months and half full they are still quite aromatic. Perhaps the Toque line is just not for me. I’ll try again someday, I have heard lots of great things especially regarding the Coke aroma. The can I recently tried was brand new, came in it’s own zip lock but when I opened the tin to smell the delicious grapefruityness of it all, there was nothing…I’ve had several pinches from this brand new can, and like I said if aroma was rated on a scale of 1 to 10, this one is coming in at .25 off a hefty pinch.

I think it’s a freshness thing to be honest. My shipments are coming to me in Canada and the air travel alone is 1 week. If the product had been sitting in storage for several months and then heading my way it may well be too old and that may be all.

J

Are you new to snuff? If so, I kinda felt the same way when I was beginner. It’s more of a technique problem. Many snuffs smell different when you get them in your nose properly.

If not, the grapefruit has been rumored to kind of lose scent quickly. I don’t know. Grapefruit and blueberry aren’t really the Toque’s that I think of when I think desert island snuff. I’d try a few more before closing the book on them.

T

Have been using snuff for about a year and a half now… no I won’t close the book but I do want to have the experience that others are using. Can you recommend a Toque snuff that you’ve had consistently good results from?

A

From personal experience Grapefruit does lose its flavour very quickly. I think the best two are Original and Quit - I’ve used these since they came on the market and they are consistently excellent.

N

Quit, SP Extra, Whiskey & Honey are my go to Toques

N

My go to Toques:

Quit

Berwick Brown

SP Extra

Raspberry

S

second on Whiskey & Honey … but also fresh Toast & Marmalade, Xmas Pudding(if he still has some in stock), Lime Toast and Spanish Gem hold their scents a long while.  nearly a year and still hitting all my Toques, and they still smell fantastic.

WoS on the other hand, is the only snuff I have experienced losing its scent, apple blackcurrant - which is a bummer since i really like that one.

V

If they are just sitting in the tin and in the plastic bag they come in, they wont dry out or lose flavor right?

B

Try the florals(I have rose, violet and lavender), the SPs, they are strongly scented. Toque peppermint is also strongly scented. Have you aired them out? Toque comes very fresh and frequently they are overpoweringly catpee smelling until they have aired a bit.

S

The unopened Tins should be fine I would think Vito.

Toque Natural Toast, Natural, Berwick Brown, Whiskey & Honey, Lime Toast and Quit hold up well to me. Those are my favorites and I have some amount of bulk on all except Lime Toast. I expect to rectify that situation soon.

T

Thanks for all the excellent recommendations!

O

I can’t smell the grapefruit, coke, vanilla or toffee very well so I guess some are mild. Ergo those snuffs are my least favourite toques.

T

Thorgrimnr,

Even I would agree with you. You have picked our two least powerful flavours. The Blueberry we are upping the flavour on, as we upped the flavour on the Blueberry Menthol and it was a vast improvement. The Grapefruit is fantastic for a week zingingly fresh Grapefruit (one to be bought directly from us) but as it is 100% natural we can’t up the flavour any more without the citric acid blowing the lids off the tins. You also have to bare in mind that upping the flavour can just ruin the snuff as even a natural flavour can taste/smell synthetic if overpowering.

Certain natural flavours just don’t work and can’t be concentrated enough. Coconut, Pineapple and Apple are three we’ve tried and given up.

T

Hello! Thanks Toque for your response!  Perhaps in the future when I want to try another one of your snuffs, I should as you say order it directly from you.  It’s the zing in the grapefruit I’m after so am pleased to hear it exists.

D

Just my two cents on Toque:

Toque really shines on plain snuffs.  Natural, Natural Toast, and Quit are all great.  The SPs aren’t bad - Original and SP Extra.  Other than that, the only Toques I’ve found that I enjoy are Berwick Brown (it’s a fitting tribute to Kendal Brown) and Rose (put a couple spoons of Quit in a jar, add a spoon of Rose, mix it up, and you’ve got a nice, lightly scented rose snuff for all day snuffing).  The other Toques I’ve tried just don’t do it for me.  Now, if toque would produce a variety of plain toasts, that would be great…

J

Hey guys. You are both fine retailers. I really think @Toque was simply stating that the Grapefruit scent can lose its oomph quickly. I don’t think he was slighting other snuff retailers like Mr. Snuff.

G

I have an idea folks , since Grapefruit is all natural , why not add grapefruit rinds in to moisten it (when in season )? As for the vanilla , I was considering getting some tonka beans or vanilla beans to add to the can. Do you think adding some drops of 100% natural grapefruit might help ? Possibly some aromatherapy grapefruit oil if no rinds are found ?

G

I have to laugh at mr.snuff on this discussion. Your comment, Dave, would make the perfect example of the term Pissy.

N

wow!

As a purveyor, you purchase a product from the manufacturer. That product may have a best before date, One should take that into consideration before deciding to sell that product. Conversing with the manufacturer before hand should solve the problem?

Also, the manufacturer should let the purveyor know of any best before dates.

just my thought.

Don’t mean to stir up shit.

M

Spanish Gem is a real Jewel

T

best before dates on snuff would be great. None of the snuffs I have with me today have a best before date, but that would be immensely helpful, that way you’d know if it was the manufacturer’s issue or the fact that it took too long in transit. At least you’d be able to try and get a refund or gain some instincts on how long snuffs last.  As I said earlier, my grapefruit aroma probably went away with a combination of it sitting at the place I purchased it combined with the travel time to Canada. In fact the place I purchased it, was out of stock immediately after I placed my order…that leads me to think it must have been in storage for at least a few weeks plus a week in transit…there’s 3 weeks right there.

N

@thorgrimnr

Good to see another Canadian on the site.

We are few but strong.

I purchased a 21g tin of McCrystyals SP on the weekend at a small shop in Kingston, Ontario.

Dry as tinder!

Who knows how long it was there for.

Shit happens in this world of snuff for our country.

i won’t get into where to purchase your snuff from…

that’s up to you…

personally, I like to go to the source.

;

T

@nightcap

Howdy from the Wet Coast of Vancouver! I usually get my snuff from the UK and in fact I managed to make a few purchases directly from Wilson’s! Alas, Wilsons no longer ships outside the EU for some reason. In the future I plan to grow my own tobacco and mill my own snuff…now that’ll be fresh!

V

I dont know what you guys are all talking about! I bought 10 tins of toque and sold half of them to my friends, I kept the 5 that were the most moist, flavorful, and coarse so they wouldnt hit the back of my throat. those flavors ended up being: Rose, Espresso, Absinthe, Pomegranite, and Apricot

N

I am a Toque snuffer!!

No problems, top notch snuff.

I get my order to Ontario, Canada within a week of order and everything is fresh!!

All aromas intact!

N

@thorhrimnr

I think @mikemoose is out your way,

M

You got that right.  I live out in Langley actually.  Not far from Vancouver!

T

@ nightcap,

Yes Mr .Moose is out my way, he has excellent youtube snuff reviews!! I look forward to his snuff antics!

T

Dave don’t panic! It’s just those two are very quick to fade once opened. However I wouldn’t like to see them sitting on the shelf for months on end.

At the other end of the scale I just found a half consumed tin of Absinthe in the pocket of a suit I haven’t worn in years (I don’t wear suits)and it was still as strong as the day it was packed.

S

I received my toques today, I think they are all pretty nice snuffs. Toque Original is definitely deserving of it’s reviews. The whiskey and honey is also excellent IMHO.

M

Thank you @thorgrimnr !  I know I haven’t uploaded a video in awhile…  I actually have like 3 videos I need to upload LOL .  I’ve just been really busy as of late.  Thank you again for watching, I hope you’ve enjoyed them .

B

The lime toast is great. Very strong scent.

Z

+1 for lime toast. It’s a masterpiece, and the scent lasts for, well I don’t know I had one open for 2 years (lost) and the wonderful scent was still there.

A

ROTFWMFITA!!! Oh I really, really do…

J

The only toque I’ve ever run into that I didn’t like was the absinthe, but that’s just my personal taste.  Everything else has been great.

T

I have 17 Toque’s and there’s not one I don’t like. Then again I don’t own Cheese & Bacon

The strongest flavours out of the ones I own are Lime Toast, Peach, Toast & Marmalade, Xmas Pudding, Rose, Spanish Gem and Blueberry Menthol. Whiskey & Honey was strong but it’s faded a bit, but when sniffed the flavour is right there.

My favourites are Whiskey & Honey, Vanilla, Toffee, Quit, Coke, and Peach. But saying that, I like them all, those few I listed just then top the others slightly for my personal taste - they’re all great.

M

What about the Snus Ice? I’ve had just a couple of chances to pick some up and have found it very nice- suppose there’s not a huge chance to get it again…?

T

I think Snus Ice is just Toque Peppermint+Menthol together so you could mix the 2 together if you can’t get the original.

M

I thought it was more or less Quit with peppermint oil. But not totally certain. I don’t get any menthol or eucalyptus in the scent which I think are both present in the Menthol. Hey Roderick, if you’re reading, am I pretty close here?

T

Yes you are. Snus Ice is a special blend off tobaccos for snuffstore.co.uk and is peppermint with a very slight hint of menthol.

M

Thank’s for letting me know! I’m wondering if you’ve considered a strongly herbally scented snuff. I find some such as Sam G’s Dr. Verey’s series to be nice, intriguing(sp), pleasant scents- but I’d like something of a fresher and more penetrating aroma- but not just menthol or camphor type penetrating qualities. So I would think to experiment with such scents as the oils, absolutes etc. of: catnip, hops, juniper berry, thyme, basil, rosemary, mints, eucalypyus, clary or common sage, chamomiles, cardomom, lavender etc. Also probably a moderate dose of menthol. I plan to experiment with my modest resources to try to come up with something. I did get a nice scent mixing your Toque Menthol, Peppermint and Lavender, but that could still use something… thank’s for listening!

J

(Correction.  All of my toques have come to life after about 3 days of rotation. The slight ammonia is enough to kill the scents in the can as well as your nose. Im really quite fond of the toques I have with the exception of bourbon and thats simply a matter of taste)  I have a tin of toque blueberry and I cant find it either, oh well.  I also tried G&H strawberry and didnt get anything either… Maybe they’re old. Mayve they’re weak.

@eraserhead78  I just tried my toque cherry and its there.  Its interesting, I actually like it but was bit afraid as some other reviewer was not a fan.  Its like a dark smoked cherry… but subtle.

@bob I retried G&H strawberry and its there, but very subtle and a one note. Almost like cheap alcohol based incense. I think I was expecting a different strawberry smell if that makes sense. (fake banana doesnt really taste like banana kind of thing)

E

couldn’t really detect the toque cherry but the 12 or 13 other flavours I’ve tried were spot on to me so I was more than pleased. Try the cheese and bacon, you’ll wonder if you’ll ever smell anything else again!

B

sometimes we don’t pick up certain scents. If the GH strawberry is missing scent then it’s probably you nose or the batch.

J

I just got a Toque order in the mail. The first one I tried was Blueberry and it definitely smells of Blueberry. Like you open the tin and you can smell the blueberry. Like I don’t love Blueberry. I just wanted to try the different fruit flavored Toques, so I can’t really speak to how great the blueberry flavor is. I do however smell the blueberry even when it’s not in my nasal passages.

T

Can we please let this post die. I hate seeing that title rear up every so often. I know the comments are 99% positive and my thanks to all of you who came to our defence but…  I feel like one of the baddies in some ancient movie screaming “die damn you, die!” to the plucky hero who just won’t give in.

I’ll even make a new post ‘Toque the good the bad and the Cheese and Bacon’.

T

@Toque  I would agree, I’m sorry the post keeps coming up especially with the title I wrote… I understand. I’m happy to be done with the post. I am convinced I have all the answers I need. TO SUMMARIZE, it’s likely I had purchased old stock as I did not buy from Toque directly. Also I purchased an aroma that even fresh is hard to push harder, that being grapedfruit. Many others have had a lot of enjoyment from TOQUE snuff and I will try one of the other aromas mentioned. Thanks ALL for your help.

J

XMAS pudding so far.  Ill edit this post if my experience changes. Ive only tried 6 toque flavors, and none of them were direct orders.

B

I never order directly from Toque (rather make one order then two). I’ve never had a problem with freshness or quality. Except for one time and the tin was pretty much smashed to uselessness by the mail carrier. The new 25 gram tins are awesome though.

T

As a parting shot to this thread, I ordered direct and loved all I got. My father in law loved my toast and marmalade so much I’m going to have to order him 25gs and as I intend to stop smoking soon, I plan to get a big tin of quit too. Keep up the good work!
