Hello all… So I am excited to say that I should be receiving my first order from Toque in the next couple days. Over the past 8 or so years of snuffing I have primarily been a Wilson’s, Samuel Gawith and G&H snuffer. My question is this…I have read several places that toque snuffs often have an ammonia odor when fresh? Is this true? Also how are the tins in terms of freshness? Should a 10g tin be decanted or will it stay fresh snuffing straight from the tin if say a 10g tine lasts approximately 2 weeks? Any insight would be appreciated. I have read such great things about the toque brand and I am looking forward to exploring the range in a whole. Thanks in advance
Many snuffs have an ammonia smell when they are fresh, so to me it’s a good sign that my snuff hasn’t been sitting on a shelf for months before getting to me. Toques tins are fine and stay fresh a long while, so no worries about 10g Going stale or anything on you. These days I snuff more toque than anything else.
Thank you so much for the reply and insight…it is greatly appreciated!
One reason Toque stays fresh is that the tins are packed very tight, so no air is in there. In fact they might seem over fresh at first, so I recommend fluffing them up a bit with a stick or snuff spoon to vent some of the extra ammonia. Keep the tins sealed otherwise and they should still be plenty fresh in two weeks. The tins are screw top with a gasket, not as nice as F&T but still a pretty good seal.
The only Toques that may lose some of their scent over two weeks would be the fruit ones. If you’d ordered a fruit snuff, you may want to just decant however much you use in a day into your snuffbox or something. Other than that, the rest are all quite long-lasting.
I’ve had the Toque Violet for about a month now and I haven’t had to do anything with it other than keep the lid screwed on after use and then back in the dresser drawer it goes, and it’s still as fresh as when it arrived on my doorstep.
air them out for a few hours to get rid of the cat pee smell.
The smell goes soon enough with repeated opening of the tin. Airing will get rid of it but also dry the snuff and make it feel less fresh. A personal choice obviously, but to me it is just a sign of freshness and not something to get rid of. I have never found the ammonia smell carries through on the pinch.
@snuffster Agreed. I never “air out” my tin or snuff. If anything, I try to avoid that if at all possible! It doesn’t mean youre gonna be smelling ammonia… don’t worry people you’ll smell your snuff! Keep it fresh its MUCH better that way!
@ItsMajick: Ammonia is a sign that the snuff is fresh, but it’s not a sign that the snuff hasn’t been sitting on a shelf for months. I have some tins of WoS SP100 that I brought with me to the States in July 2009. I opened one of them about a week ago, and it stank of ammonia and was perfectly fresh. Considering the place I bought it from, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it had been sitting on their shelf for quite a long time too- the guy looked very surprised when I asked for snuff, and had to hunt around for it. I put this long shelf life down to the pretty airtight tin, coupled with the tape around the seam.
Yes that goes without saying. I have some very old F&T tins that still carry the smell due to the air tight seal and the fact that I rarely pinch them
If it’s a snuff I don’t use much, I go as far as to tape the tin back up again after use. Never had one become unusably stale. You just have to watch carefully for rust…
No chance of rust on a Toque tin, maybe some oxcide but no rust. They are made of aluminum alloy. edm
