I have been using snuff for about seven months now and have had a variety of different types from F&T, WE Garrett, Poschl, WS, J&H, McCrystals and Toque. I have realized of all the snuff’s I have tried so far, Toque is the only one that makes me cough everytime I use it. Doesn’t matter what type of Toque, I still cough. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem? I have tried differnt snuff taking techniques but nothing has worked, so I thought maybe somebody with some snuff wisdom could help a fellow snuff-taker out.
Full inhale into lungs, then sniff. This is the advice I mostly often see people refer to when this issue of coughing or snuff hitting the throat comes up.
I could understand if you coughed with fine snuffs, but Toque? I have no idea.
Toque is pretty fine.
I meant like scotches or toasts.
"Full inhale into lungs, then sniff. This is the advice I mostly often see people refer to when this issue of coughing or snuff hitting the throat comes up. " I have not tried this yet. I will try it and see. I don’t know, something about Toque for me I guess.
Since you said you had tried different techniques to no avail, then maybe you can try: (1) only use Toque snuff when your the inside of your nose is moist (2) mix a few drops of water into the snuff and sniff it after mixing (I won’t add water straight into the tin, but to a small amount that is poured out) I know these methods are not elegant and a bit of a hassle, but they really make any finely grinded snuff more manageable.
You are not alone with finding a snuff that makes you cough, for me it is the WoS blends that do this, and a few Toques. I found taking it off the back of my hand instead of pinching gave me a larger degree of control and less irritation. The usual gentle smell don’t snort applies too may help.
Well I guess I was wrong. I got my order in the other day and I tried Toque berwick Brown. Not only did I not have the same problem, but I also found a great snuff.
I had exactly same problem with many Toque snuffs and only way I got around it was to limit Toque use.
Hi. I have exactly the same problem as I posted yesterday and I got nearly the same advice. I found that advice very helpful, especially to breathe in before sniffing. Although I don´t snuff much more shallow that way, it definitely works - no coughing no more. Good luck.
Well I found a solution that works for me. I followed the advice about breathing in before, but I also do not put the snuff directly to the opening of my nostril. I stop about a couple centimeters below my nostril and sniff. It may look weird but it works.
Hey, great idea!
I think a bullet makes fine snuffs more dangerous.
your sniffing too hard, i have a problem with my right nostril, its always blocked and not as clear as my left nostril, what i do with my my Toque snuffs is, i place my snuff into my right nostril with my right thumb and leave it there for about 5 seconds or so and then i snuff normally into my left nostril but very lightly and only after i have already taken a deep breath, then it goes into my nose at a very steady pace that vway, practicing makes perfection. i , myself have some old and dry Toques and by using this technique, they dont hit the back of my throat.
what you want, is your snuff to go only “JUST” into your nose, that way it CANT get to the back of your throat. its amazing how when you sniff, you only have to sniff very slightly.
with Toque, you get “REAL” flavouring, just go nice an steady and you will fully appreciate snuff for what it actually is.
@ Micheltn I am with you on bullets and fine dry snuffs; however, I think I will withhold using a bullet with Dholakia White.
There are always snuffs that you can’t get on with. Most of the Smith’s range make me feel like Ive got a bad case of hay fever. It will simply be one of the additives.
Today I found out a very good method for me. Actually, fazer inspired me with what he wrote. I put the thumb and index finger so close to my nostril, that it is closed. By breathing in through the other nostril I take the snuff in. It works, because there is an anatomical link between the two caverns of the nasopharynx. And it definitely doesn´t get into my throat. You have to sniff quite hard though.
Not bad at all, just tried it.
Hi First post, pleased to meet you. Toque is the only snuff I’ve tried so far which also makes me cough. I’ve got about 80 different snuffs, approximately 20 of them Toques. I’ve tried everything to prevent this and the only thing that has worked for me is add 3ml of pure water to a 10g tin of toque. I use a syringe with needle to do this in order to spread the droplets of water evenly around the tin. Then I shake it like crazy and leave it for 24 hours. It’s then wet enough not to hit the back of my throat and make me cough like crazy. Why is it though that ONLY Toque snuffs do this to me? I’ve got many different types, but really want to get in to enjoying Toques without any “tricks” as I love their range and large quantities you can buy.
Well, as I said above, Toque is pretty fine ground. They made me cough when I was a newb too. The only “trick” you have to learn is how to take snuff properly. There are many ways of describing it I’veheard memebers use: “bunny sniff”, “closing your blow hole”, “smelling the air in the room” etc. Basically you have to inhale while holding your breath at the same time, or inhale and then very quickly hold your breath. If your nose is semi congested you can get away with a stronger sniff.
Thanks Xander. I’ll persevere.
I’m still baffled that a scotch like Garrett doesn’t cause the coughing but toque does.
We’ve all posted ‘how to’ threads at some point or other giving our respective tips, fact is that it tends to come in time regardless of what advice you follow. When you boil it all down all you are really talking about is how much pressure to use on the inhalation. If you are struggling I would advise just to not think about it too deeply.
well, I do not have the coughing problem anymore. You guys were right, lol. it is all about experience in the end.
Yeah, just comes with time like all good things
Hmmm. Hard to imagine… completely without coughing. But perhaps the advice not to think too much about it is good…
I’ve read this thread previously and not weighed in because I’m too new at this, but have learned a good deal reading the responses. Thanks folks. For what it’s worth, I use a lot of Toque and really like it all. Some is quite fine and dry, and I’m slowly learning how much I can fill my spoon with a given snuff and still take it comfortably. Today I’ve been enjoying Whiskey & Honey, and it’s really coming along nicely. But still a very small amt on the spoon. I’d like to get to the point I could get a good snort up there without choking on it; it’s got to be a breathing thing. The long breath before sniffing is great advice, working very well for me. I really like all the Toque I’ve tried, so I’m just learning to adjust to each one individually. The Berwick Brown is a daily favorite, very easy to deal with. I just have to work at keeping the different sized grains mixed together equally for a fair taste. Spoon works well for stirring things together.
@ddave: For fine snuffs try spooning some on to the back of the hand and snuffing from there. It will give you more control than from the spoon. When you snuff from a spoon it seems to go back farther in the nose.
I can’t really get into snuff spoons. I have seen many people say good things about them they just do not seem for me. Nothing seems to work better for taking any kind of snuff than taking a pinch, and I never have a problem using this method anymore. Maybe as I become a more experienced snuffer I will take on to it, but for now the pinch method all the way.
@joshua2007, same here, I pinch from the palm of my hand. I always wet my fingers a la snuffster, no snuff down my throat.
Sounds like I’m going to have to try some different approaches. I may never get over seeing the big brown smear on my nose one day, kind of put me off pinching… I think I was getting just a little too close.
