Toque Berwick Brown

Wow! This is an awesome snuff. I absolutely love this. The dark tobacco and the hint of citrus is remarkable. So, my question is what other kinds of snuff should I try like this? Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith Kendal Browns? I’m kinda lost navigating through which Samuel Gawith to try. Should I get both unscented and scented Gawith Hoggarth?

For me the plain snuffs are some of my favorites. I suggest Kendal Brown from Gawith Hoggarth only in 25g tub though. And Black Rappee from Samuel Gawith also in 25g tub. I prefer the tubs due to freshness.

Yeah. I wasn’t even going to mess with it in those dispensers. I can’t even use them anyway. I always pinch.

Yeah me too. I get better control.

I found bb a bit soapy to start and wasn’t terribly keen but now after a few months it has aged and is now a wonderful citrussy snuff!

It’s one of my absolue favorites. It smells like Spring, ya know?

It’s good stuff.

mine has some larger flakes of tobacco in it. Is thise normal? doesn’t bother me was just wondering. Love it consuming mass quantities. edm

@bish777: That’s funny, because I really liked it at first, but I found it didn’t age as well as some other Toque varieties, W&H and Spanish Gem, being two that really grew on me over time. Another reason not to throw out snuff!

I like my Berwick Brown, but sometimes it just doesn’t agree with my nose. Still, just took two nice pinches of it after reading this thread. Still tasty, and I was surprised at how little there was left in my tin.

@nelsonpipeclub I seem to like it now its aged a bit. Different strokes for different noses I guess!

I liked Berwick Brown scent-wise- just lovely! However the grainy sand-like texture of it in my nose and the fact that within 2 weeks or so it had lost much of its moisture and scent put me right off it. I tried the SG Kendal Brown and it was just awful. Nothing at all like Berwick Brown. Which of the Kendals has a similar scent to Berwick but is less grainy and retains its scent better?

@Grant my vote would be WoS Kendal Brown.

@Grant it sounds like you got Kendal Brown out of a tapbox. Certainly it was dried out before it ever reached you. A KB should not be at all grainy, neither should the berwick for that matter - that may have dried out over time. They should be moist, medium to heavy coarseness, and pungent (even the unscented ones). I’ve found that GH Scented KB is the closest in scent to Berwick B. Though it is a good bit more coarse and moist. The SG ones are all good ones. SG Scented or Special should also be close to what you are looking for. @Ivan WoS ‘Kendal Brown’ is nothing like a Kendal Brown. Its really more of an SP. It bears no similarity to the GH/SG KBs or even Berwick Brown in scent, color, flavor, texture or moisture. It’s not made in Kendal, and neither is it Brown, so its really misnamed. I won’t go as far as saying its a bad snuff, in fact it’s pretty good, but a Kendal Brown it is not.
