Whilst my inexperienced nose is unable to offer a full review I just wanted to commend Roderick on this marvellous snuff. It’s totally bowled me over. It’s deliciously citrusy, with some floral notes, on a great tobacco base. The moisture level is perfect (semi-moist, perhaps?) and the grind is wonderful. If I could only snuff one snuff for the rest of my life, this would be it. As soon as I manage to find a job I’ll be making a bulk order.
Wow, you got that fast. I presume mine is in transit. I estimate Monday arrival.
I can assure you its great snuff. I was fortunate enough to try a pre release sample and you have some great snuff on route; rich and flavoursome. Its great to see Toque now moving into the full range of mills - in my book they are fast becoming the single most important producer - which from a start up of 2 or 3 years ago is simply outstanding.
_which from a start up of 2 or 3 years ago is simply outstanding_Agreed.
I hope they are around a lot longer too.
I haven’t had internet for about a month and missed these new Toques coming out. I promised myself I would finish about 10 nearly empty tins of Toque before I made another order. Good job I washed all my hankies yesterday, I’m gonna need them!
Received this in the post this morning and what a beautiful snuff it is, dark moist with an earthy citrus scent and a very good nictotine hit this really is the perfect all day snuff.
I have some in transit too! it should be here by mid week! Cant wait to try this one!
Got this in today and I think it’s great! Really, really good. The scent is great and I love the grind and moisture.
Just ordered this plus the other new flavours - really looking forward to trying them all!
Ahhhh, love at first snuff! Looks like I have found something for the unused snuffbox I bought a few weeks ago. Tom Buck, Dr JR Justice and HDT, meet your new brother, Berwick Brown, you’ll all be spending a lot of time together in my pocket.
I tried this tonight. Its really very good snuff. Top marks!
Just received mine. Has to air out a bit now, but what I get besides the ammonia is smelling divine! I´m very excited. As always: very fast shipping. Roderick´s the man!
Me too, can’t wait to try it.
OMG! This is “simply” fantastic. The 1 for the island snuff.
You can say that again Michael, my first 10g tin is almost gone!
Hmmm, basically I was much more looking forward to the Lime Toast (which I haven´t even opened, yet), but the Berwick Brown just kinda hypnotized me and got all of my attention first. There must be magic involved in the production of this snuff. I just can´t explain it any other way.
I do agree. I seem to have made a fair old hole in a 25g tin of BB, and a similar hole in a 25g tin of Natural Toast.
It’s chuffin’ marvellous!
While I am not one to review a snuff, do to my new to it status, the Berwick just brings a smile to my face every sniff, so moist, easy to take, and downright refreshing!
You don’t need to have been snuffin for ages to do a review Kevin, all opinions are just as valid so by all means put one in if you feel like it.
The reviews can also be edited to reflect a new or more sophisticated opinion, so newbies should not hesitate to review what they already know.
We all see you experts doing nuanced reviews and it makes us lesser mortals doubt our nose sensitivity. I don’t do reviews as I suck at picking out the subtle scents in snuffs. Sometimes I don’t even know what I am smelling. I really couldn’t tell you the difference between Geranium and Violet, or Virginia tobacco and Carolina.I just know that I like something and that makes for short reviews.
Well,I don’t consider myself an expert and sometimes I really doubt if I’ve said anything of any value in my reviews, but it’s fun doing them. If you actually would like to publsih a review and are not doing so just because you don’t think you have a good nose, I would still say do one. Apart from the fact that your capacity to detect different flavours increases with time, a short review with what you honestly feel is still worth reading in my book. Give it a go, you might surprise yourself and don’t worry if other members seem to be ‘experts’ its just about having fun!
Ah bloody hell, NO Berwick Brown for me yet, why must I wait so long?! Received my snus order but I have enough snus, I want my BB
Thanks for the encouragement Snuffster, I have read reviews from day one of my snuffing, and over time I get a feel for which posters nose is closer to my own. Of course my first snuff was Navy Scotch, and after a huge snort, I thought all you guys were demented! And although I was probably right, I have persevered. You have a good point, I do know what I like, and in the case of Berwick Brown, love. It just how to convey that to others, it takes time. I am somewhat like bigmick, once I hear germanium, I go of course, before then I just get muddled. Takes time, I have about 80 snuffs now, and three favorites, all I know is that many new favorites exist in that box, and time will tell. This is a great hobby though. It is some what of a shame that my most intriguing questions about snuff, are considered guarded secrets of the masters. Sorting, cleaning, essential oils, PH, stability, oh the questions I would like to ask!
No problem, just pick a favourite and write from the heart (or nose) and let’s see the results. Nice point about the guarded secrets. I never shy away from asking what I want as I am just a consumer who spends some of his hard earned money on their products, in my view I can ask what I like - getting an answer is another matter! To be fair the manufacturers are not about to start giving away the secrets of their livelyhood to competitors, but you do glean the odd bit of information from time to time. My advice is ask away!
@ Kevin: I’ve been snuffing now for more than 2 years and I have over 200 different snuffs. But I still can’t tell what’s in a snuff. What I can tell is when I like it. I’m not worried about what’s in it, as long as I like it I’ll stick it up my nose (even if it’s cow dung). I trust the manufacturers won’t put something in there that will kill me. If they do, they will lose a very loyal customer.
Be strong Pieter!
Pieter, you are an interesting one, I have been shoving NTSU up my nose wondering if you are secretly just sitting there laughing your arse off at the very thought! I am still wondering about the cow dung reference, but I am one to talk, you would not believe what we tend to drink out of glass canning jars here in the Appalachian wilderness, I cannot begin to tell you exactly what I am tasting, but I know what I like!!! Enjoy!
Good one this. The grind is a bit inconsistent (there are some very chunky bits in my tin), but the flavour falls between the F&T’s KB and the Kendal KB examples. Violet, geranium and citrus and easy on the nose. Very good and I think I prefer Berwick Brown to any Kendal Browns available.
How does it compare to Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown. Is it a more natural tobacco taste or more on the perfume side like say F&T’s KB?
It’s probably “on par” with GH’s Kendal Brown in terms of how much perfume there is. It’s nothing like the, frankly quite offensive, F&T version.
Thanks Spam. Thats good to hear. F&T is quite over the top
It is not like the Gawith Hoggarth KB in my opinion (not as leathery and hardcore!). From what my nose tells me, Berwick Brown is flavoured with violet, geranium and citrus, like the F&T version, but less pungent. It is very good, but it isn’t the same as Samuel Gawith Original KB or the GH version. I would say it is somewhere in between the F&T/ Wilsons floral affair and the Kendal versions. I do recommend it.
Going out on a limb here, I think its less like any of the KBs in flavor and maybe more like F&T Princes Special or perhaps a Wilsons moist variety. Can’t quite put my finger on it. It is like the tradtional KBs in grind/moisture though. Comparisons notwithstanding, its a top notch, first class snuff. Hats (and toques) off to Roderick, I think this really is his masterpiece.
along Xander’s lines of thinking - I thought it had a scent pretty similar (but not identical) to WoS Brunswick - but not as moist, and with the different tobacco base. I wonder if we’ll see a natural version of this tobacco at some point too. I still love this stuff - trying to pace myself through my little tin.
I wasn’t trying to say the scent was the same as any of the Kendal varieties, just that the ‘amount’ of flavour was similar. If you see what I mean? I’m glad someone has mentioned that it smells of violet, I got a scent reminiscent of Parma Violets when I pinched it earlier and thought I was going a bit mental - it was such a blast from the past, aha. As soon as this 10g tin nears it’s end I’m going to order 100 or 200g’s and a PC box for it. I can’t see myself ever going off it. Are the boxes on StuffStore.co.uk PC’s?
I think Xander has something there - there is something very Princes about the flavour, not as heavily floral, a bit more citrus perhaps, but reminiscent. I think I actually prefer it. @ Spam: Yes, the inlaid ‘slider’ boxes are PCs. You should check out Nicotine Rush for the unbelievably cool double compartment boxes as well.
Ah, my order came in already! Oh yes, this is some good snuff. I agree it is similar to princes, but I like it better. I love the texture, the color, the flavor. It is easy on the nose, and gives a creeper lift, lasts a while too. Another gold star for Roderick!
OK I gonna go out on a limb here. This snuff reminds me of Bespoke’s Gin & Tonic, only not quite as citrusey. It is a very good snuff indeed, and as I do like Bespoke’s G&T very much, obviously this is going to be a favorite of mine as well.
Something about this snuff just rocks my world, and im not sure if its in a good way - although its definitly not a bad way… Its hard to explain! When I take it I get a really weird rush that almost reminds me of my oxycontin days. It’s really hard to explain it, its like the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and then instant calmness. The snuff is a weird grind, almost like a fine grind and a coarse grind mixed together. You would think that adds up to a med grind, but it’s not really that either! The smell is really crisp and fresh. Flowery and definite citrus burn. I wouldn’t reccomend it ATM, but I think this will be one that I set and forget only to love in the near future!
Similar to Bespoke Gin & Tonic??? this snuff should be amazing ! Gin & Tonic is one of my all time favorites Where the hell is my tin?? Damn customs
To me you would not begin by comparing Toque’s Berwick Brown to either F&T’s Kendal Brown or Gawith Hogg’s K Brown. It is neither nor is it somewhere in the middle. IMO BB is better compared to Wilson’s Best Dark both in grind and flavor profile. That said, the citrus/flower componants in the two blends are distinct (making both unique). Likewise, the Wilson’s citrus/flower componants are more of a background note while with BB they are more up front. Both are very good and well worth your trying. I would class them as Dark SPs.
I am comparing BB to F&T KB because to my nose they are flavoured with similar florals. The leathery tobacco reminds me of GH KB. That is why I have said BB is the best of both worlds.
I got a tin of BB today and I’m already sorry i opted for the 10g version , i don’t think this will last me long , it’s pretty easy to keep on taking a pinch. The grind and moisture , and to some extent the scent remind me of F&T Old Paris
I agree with sandy130674. Whatever constitutes brown in the Browns is spot on in the Berwick Brown. In this respect it is comparable to all the Kendal Browns. So far this has been a little sneezy for me. I get lavender and violet out of it and some citrus. Not sure though because I can’t keep my nose out of the SP Extra long enough.
This snuff is so good, I was on my way to order 100g of it. But…it makes my nose run like a tap (faucet). I’ve gone through 10g or more already but it’s still the same. I’ve tried some F&T HDT again today and it does not have the same effect. Will my nose get used to the BB?
I try not to use snuffs that don’t make my nose run. That is part of the experience to me. SG and GH Kendal Browns, WOS Gold Label, and Grand Cairo are some of my favorites and they all have that effect on me.
This stuff goes fast. I like it a lot. I loved it at first but then after a bit I wasn’t sure I was going to in the long run. I went through a massive amount of it today though.
Along with seven other Toque snuffs, I just received a 25g tin of Berwick Brown in the mail today. All I can say is WOW!!! This is a definite case of love at first sniff. I better order more of this ASAP, because I have the feeling that I am going to empty this tin faster than I’ve ever emptied any tin in my life. I really hope that Roderick continues to beat Fribourg & Treyer at their own game. Is there any chance of a Toque flavor akin (and superior to) F & T’s Morocco???
This snuff is so awesome. I totally love it. I definitely pick up the GIn and Tonic - even more so if you chase it with a pinch of lime toast. I get a really strong nic hit, and it’s very easy to snuff. Well done, Roderick!
Well…I ran my little ten grams through a sieve today. I just couldn’t take the inconsistency of the grind on this one. I don’t know what size mesh I have but I eliminated about ten to fifteen percent of it. Don’t worry I reground the larger pieces for another mix. I’m not recommending it, but for myself, I feel I did the right thing. The larger pieces in the Berwick Brown were just too light for me and would trigger sneezing too easily. The resulting snuff has lost a little bit of it’s original character but the well done scent art remains the same.
Berwick Brown is the snuff that helped me realize that I like taking snuff. I could not sing enough praises to Roderick for this. Greatest snuff I have tried thus far.
@ N-Krypt, nice to see you over here. Great bunch here.
I just dug into my first 25g tin after doing something I don’t normally do: 6 different ones in a row, ending with F&T Bordeaux, and the highest praise I can give it is that it’s got that unique F&T combination of dark, mysterious, earthy things with a slightly bright floral note. Like an old woods on a late spring day, but my nose is confused at the moment. Still, based on what I can tell, this is at least Toque’s finest creation so far, and that’s saying something. It’s hard to imagine what they’re going to come up with over the next few years. I hope at least some of them will be along the lines of this one: heavily reliant on an incredibly pure, dark tobacco base, with the depth and complexity of the finest of the best F&T’s (like Bordeaux and Old Paris), and perhaps with a little more restraint. An amazing achievment!!
Apparently several folks order at the start of the month? At any rate I did, Toques Berwick Brown and Vanilla made it into the cart this time around. I’ll get to the Vanilla eventually, but the BB got 1st attention when the box from Florida hit the front porch yesterday. My preferences seem to be aligning with the more, for want of a better word, “traditional” recipes. Coarser grinds with simple scent combination’s that allow balance betwixt tobacco and additional aromas. I was so thoroughly impressed with the WoS Brunswick and SG Kendal Brown Orig. that discussion regarding Toques BB caught my eye. Finally, a Toque product with a distinct character and resolve! While the Berwick Brown is not a rave for me, it has made for 3 products in the Toque line that will see additional purchases.
I agree OTD, I hope Toque continue to produce good traditional styles, like Berwick Brown, SP Extra and Natural Toast.
I have Berwick Brown. Unfortunately I don’t get any citrus at all there, this one strikes me as one of the very perfumy snuffs, completely different than I see people describing it here. I also noticed this one is the only snuff that actually caused my nose to start to stuff up after use (from the bullet, the only place I’ve been with it)… but that’s in the little plastic prepackaged bullet of it anyway… as I open the tin I also have of it and just kind of pass my nose over to smell it, it doesn’t seem to smell quite the same when just smelled that way as it does to me when sniffed from the bullet (a tin I got before the bullet was back in stock) Is this one of them that is is maybe best not used in a plastic bullet? as soon as I get over the beating I have just given my nose (see my other thread about ‘unsnuffables’ – every few days I get the big pile of them backout and try to see if my nose has changed its mind on anything, salvaged just a few that way). in a bit (after recovery) I’ll try the Berwick Brown directly from the tin (with assistance from the big czech tool’a spoon). (I’m beginning to just not trust my bullets so much any more (note, I only have one snuff per bullet, this isnt’ an issue of mixing old and new, most of them are in pre-packaged bullets)… though Lime Toast which is citrus is great in its prepackaged, one of my top 10 all time favorite snuffs as a ‘for a treat’ sniff between regulars) Its one that by all accounts so far just isn’t hitting my nose anything at all like it should/like its being described by everyone else.
I use large quantities of Lime Toast on a daily basis. It’s not just a treat anymore.
I tried a bullet a few time, and it reminded me of drinking wine straight out of the bottle. It might be good for a little nic hit, but pinching, tapping or spooning are the ways to olfactory ecstasy.
When I first tried Berwick Brown, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. It wasn’t horrible, but I didn’t particularly care for the scent. After only 3 days, it is the only snuff that I’ve been using. I’m still not crazy about the smell, but the whole experience of taking a sniff is incredible. It’s easy on the nose, gentle scent, and is overall very relaxing. I can’t get enough of it. It has almost taken Spanish Gem’s place as my #1 snuff.
I am a novice snuffer and a non-smoker but I have had a lot of Swedish snuss over the last 10 years. I have only tried maybe 18-20 different types of snuff over the last month or so Pöschl’s (6), Togue (8-10), Wilsons (3), Bernard Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert and Dholakia. For my money Togue Berwick Brown is the snuff with the scent and texture my brain was looking for when I started to experiment with snuff I think it is an amazing product.
bullets are the hip flasks of the snuff world. usefull and discrete. And you shouldn’t go to the bar without either
I agree that you shouldn’t go to a bar without a well filled hip flask, given the price of good whiskey. But even back in the old days, when my only encounter with nasal snuff was when reading Charles Dickens, bullets were considered so “gadgety.” Ask yourself: “What would Tony Montana do?”
I just received this much vaunted snuff and to be quite frank, the scent is rather cloying and soapy, that thankfully, dissipates fast leaving a nice tobacco aroma that fades just as fast. all in all there can’t be and is no comparison to Berwick Brown and the great KB’s of SG.
@saucy_jack, just give it a little time, it will grow on you for sure. I’ve tried some KB after I’ve been on BB and it just wasn’t the same anymore.
Aye saucy j, hehe, you just gotta stop trying to compare Toque snuff to other snuff lol The Berwick Brown does improve with use as Pieter sez, I’ve gotten to where I enjoy it for what it is but,… it’ll nere compare to the SG Kendal Brown Original, it’s just too different. (-;
@ the guys: hopefully it will grow on me. the other toques haven’t moved me much more than a pinch here and there.
An instant favorite of mine…I think it’s GREAT; a very unique scent, easy to take, relaxing, thoroughly enjoyable. I wonder if Toque would sell BB by the kilo ?
I just got this for the first time yesterday. It reminds me of Murphy’s Oil Soap which Ive used to clean wooden furniture many times. This is not a bad thing to me because i really like the smell of that soap. I really like the blends that the odor can’t be defined like this and gives them some uniqueness. Spanish Gem is still my favorite but this is a runner up. Its the easiest stuff to take that I’ve ever used, its like nearly impossible to hit my throat.
After all the complaints I’ve posted about hating BB…I have to recant them all. In my last order I got a small tin of it. I got a surprise. After trading away my first tin, hating it, I find I rather enjoy it now. Wish I had ordered a big tin. For some reason this tin isn’t as floral and I’m picking up a hint of citrus… I like Berwick Brown.
@Mick, I’m revisiting BB after I’ve been on SG Kendal Brown for a while. I’m so glad I’ve got 100 grams of BB and only one 10 gram tin of KB. Need I say more?
Yes, but Pieter, your SG KB is surely dried out and flat tasting if bought it in a tap box. Not a fair comparison. I quite like the BB, have all along. I now find it quite close to the GH scented KB. Sorry newbies for all the jargon.
@ Pieter, I’m glad my semi noob nose is in line with your much more experienced nose. lol @Xander, the GH KB was what made me want to try the Toque. Maybe the Toque just needed to age a bit? or my nose needed to…
After rehydrating I found the SG KB to be spectacular!
I’m not smelling any citrus smell in this… is this just a glorified SP? My noobish nose doesn’t take kindly to the flowery snuffs so far. Is this just something I will get over as I snuff more? Or should I just stay away from SP for a while? Thanks.
No, its not an SP. Its an homage to Kendal Brown, particularly a scented Kendal Brown. It should have a moderate citrus scent, perhaps only a light floral note. SPs generally have a bergamot scent, which ranges from mild to pungent, depnding on the brand. Just put the BB aside for awhile if you don’t like it right away. Come back to it someday and you might like it then.
Xander hit the nail on the head there…my 6 months of snuffing was spent primarily with American Scotches and the Toque toasts…I didn’t care much for BB my first try either. After finally diving in and trying various other UK snuffs, I came back to BB, and today it’s one of my very favorites…a REALLY nice snuff!!
I’m not liking the soapy scent of BB
k thanks guys. I think I’ll just store it for awhile and wait for my nose to mature a bit.
Berwick Brown is a new favorite for me
Really disliked bb on my first pinch so I put iit away … after reading these posts I pulled the tin back out blew off the dust lol…and had a pinch then another and another…I think I really. Enjoy this now excellent stuff indeed!!!
I like the larger grain of Berwick Brown, and yes there is some inconsistency, but I haven’t found that to be a problem. Perhaps further hydration would help the sneezing if that is a problem, or do what Juxtaposer did.
Tried this again this morning, I don’t get citrus either, bit to “floral” and “soapy” for my taste …
I like Berwick Brown a lot… and I like it better than any of the Kendall Browns.
But if you like Berwick Brown the KB’s might really impress you.
But if you like Berwick Brown the KB’s might really impress you. I find them totally different, the KB (at least the GW one) does not have any flowery or soapy scent… Its a dark, rich almost smoky tobacco scent … Very nice
I’m trying not to use my Berwick Brown at the moment. The reason is, it’s easily my No.1 snuff, and I will comfortably use it to the exclusion of everything else. Instead, I’m trying to work my way through a wealth of snuff that I’ve been neglecting for a few years. Berwick Brown also changes. Fresh, I find it a little overwhelming on the floral, but after being aired out this settles and becomes very nutty and moreish, and I can’t keep my nose out of it. If I knew then what I know now, I’d have several kilos of Berwick Brown and maybe a kilo of everything else, instead of 400g of Berwick Brown and 8 or 9 kilos of everything else.
8 or 9 kilos? I
I like Berwick Brown but would love it if the cologne-iness were toned down somewhat. @50ft_trad I plan on trying to air it out like you
I’m in the same place with my Ambrosia @SammyD13 . The 25g I got ~6 weeks ago is hard for me to handle because there’s sooo much ‘flavoring.’ My first 10g of it though only lasted a few days. I’ll try airing out a few grams and see if it gets easier. I love the snuff, I just handle much of the aroma. Next time we meet up I’ll bring it with. Maybe I got some leftover of the custom 2x
