I just got some tonka beans and put one in with about 7g of Tube Rose. Hopefully this will work. The beans weren’t particularily strong smelling. Is this normal or are they old or something?
Try splitting them down the middle to release more flavor.
@rdunnion, Xander’s advice is 100% correct!! The beans can be split lenght wise, just like an ordinary bean. It makes quite a difference and, of course, you will have twice as much beans.

Yes, and the beans can also be rehydrated by soaking them overnight, just as you would for preparing dried beans for cooking. However, just put one in an old snuff tin with water, rather than a pot of them. It can then be added to a dried out snuff to flavor and rehydrate the snuff.
