Over the last week or so, I’ve noticed tongue bite from snuff…I think?
Maybe it’s the menthol, or other oils dripping and irritating the tongue, what do you guys think? Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?
I’ve been a pipe smoker for awhile, but relaxed my piping habit when I discovered snuff. I say this to indicate that this ‘tongue bite’ isn’t from piping…could it be from the snuff? Or?
I know what you mean about Hedges! I’ve found the Rosinski mentholated snuffs very easy to take and never have a problem with them. His green snuffs were a revelation to me. They won’t match Hedges for kick though…
Maybe try a plainish snuff, like Samuel Gawith KB Original, to see if it’s the menthol causing the problem. It’s very easy on the nose. If you’re missing the nicotine there are quite a few unmentholated choices that can fit the bill and are not at all hard to take. NTSU Black works for me. Its Green cousin is lightly mentholated.
I’m taking several day’s break and will do the ‘elimination diet’ with snuff. I suspect it’s just too much menthol, too often. And, maybe I’m taking too much of a pinch…I get the drip, and find trace amounts on my tongue. It’s either chemical bite, or, allergic reaction to the tobacco. Definitely not pleasant. Huge bummer, because I absolutely love snuff.
Update for anyone curious, I’ve determined the tongue bite is, in fact, caused by an (allergic?) reaction from heavy menthol use. I’ve switched to exclusively dark blends like Viking Dark, black rapee blends, Jock’s Choice and no problems. Excellent!
Can I suggest you grab some Bernard Gekachelter Virginie while you can? It’s plain and very easy take. I’ve been told Viking Brown is quite similar - that’ll be in my next order to try.
If you like Vitamin N then NTSU Black or one of the Taxi snuffs might be worth a go.
Bernard Fresco for sure is one I will never do right before bed. It’s so course if you get back drip it will launch you straight out of bed blowing your nose. Menthols I pinch very lightly besides McChrystals Original and Genuine and Gawith Original I can take pretty big pinches of those.
Not sure if that’s exactly the tongue bite but could be due or cause by back drip. Try hitting the front of the nose with menthols maybe
