Just wondered, with an 800% tax increase looming (US), if anyone in stocking up on snuff? I was thinking I really needed to get ahead on cellaring some pipe tobacco, but after researching the bill a bit, I’m not sure what to worry about first. Thoughts?

D

Haven’t heard about the act. I will have to read about it when I get back to my office. 800% yea that doesnt sound good!

Thank You for posting this @cstokes4

P

well can can hope that the inclusion of cigars kills it, but not sure if it will…

And of course, lets not have this devolve into a nasty political thread. Should things be discussed on their merits and not based on personal political affilitation or beliefs, this thread will stay alive. As it states in the TOS: While Snuffhouse attempts to create an environment free of restrictions on speech, there are certain subjects that Snuffhouse has deemed inappropriate to discuss on the Snuffhouse forum. P

@cstokes4, and all others. I was simply referring to being concerned about procuring snuff (and other affected tobacco) prior to this legislation possibly being enacted. I was not commenting in any fashion on the legislation or politics behind it. thx, Pete

B

@PeteTschantz no is saying you’ve broken the rules. Which if you were here during the pact act fiasco (the fiasco was the thing being passed in it’s current state), you’d have seen that yeah we did need to talk about it here because it related to us. You’d also remember how many people who blamed their least favorite political party then would talk about how much the repulicrates hate the country and how that didn’t help the discussion about the law and what we did need to talk about. So if you were here then you’d say I hope people listen to cstokes4 and stick to the part we need to know or that relate to our hobby. And I’ll put the same thing he said in my own words. Wouldn’t you rather be my friend because of our wonderfull hobby then to not be friends because we vote diffrentily, especialy when there are places like facebook for alienating the other half of the country :).

P

@bob, I hear ya. I’m very careful not to discuss politics or religion on internet forums. Guess I thought my original post was as apolitical as I could make it I really just wondered if anyone was stocking up intentionally, as opposed to just buying a bunch o’ snuff.

T

We see eye to eye on this issue and so do the two parties. I already have a ridiculous amount of tobacco (though not by our standards) but I will keep an eye on where this is headed and this places my order to Toque a lot closer on the calendar. I’m glad you brought this up @PeteTschantz

P

thanks @TomStrasbourg. I’m just trying to figure out my strategy for stocking up on snuff & pipe tobacco.

C

@PeteTschantz: No worries, it was a blanket statement; not aimed at anyone in particular.

P

@cstokes4 - I didn’t take it personally. Just wanted to clarify my intent with the post. No worries here!

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/s194 Prognosis 3% chance of getting past committee. 0% chance of being enacted. Only 12% of Senate bills made it past committee and only 2% were enacted in 2011–2013. http://beta.congress.gov/congressional-record/2013/02/04/senate-section/article/S466-1 A tax introduced by a guy representing arguably the most corrupt state in the Union, IL. (That is a fact and not a political statement from someone who escaped that state with the shirt off his back. Barely.)

P

Thanks @Hamlet - I missed that when I looked at the govtrack.us page earlier. I’ll worry a little less, but will keep an eye on it.

H

Hey, thanks for the heads up @PeteTschantz. Never paid much heed when the warning came down the pike about snuff here in the states. Now I regret it. Need to keep an eye on our elected employees. We need to be ready to fire off emails and phone calls whenever our Pursuit of Happiness is encroached upon.

T

At any rate even if it does pass it will take a while, and it will take even longer for it to be enacted. Plus it should be really low on the priorities list.

M

Tobacco will always be one of the most taxed products in the US. I was reading the one part about loose tobacco and I have always thought that pipe tobacco and snuff sales were calculated by weight not portions as would cigars, cigarettes & snus. I would bet that if it was to be a new bill, it would only target cigarettes & snus. Your state is who can get the most out of you with a new tax. Maryland had a huge price jump in January and I believe we have another in March or April.

H

I would bet that if it was to be a new bill, it would only target cigarettes & snus.

I’ll take that bet. B-) From the various links provided… “Cigars, smokeless tobacco, pipe tobacco, and nicotine candies, however, remain at dramatically lower tax rates than cigarettes making them a cheap source of tobacco, particularly among young people. While cigarettes, roll-your-own, and little cigars are taxed about $1 for a pack of 20 cigarettes, pipe tobacco is only taxed 11 cents for what adds up to 20 cigarettes, a pouch of chewing tobacco is only taxed 9 cents, and a 12-pack can of nicotine tablets or lozenges is taxed less than 1 cent. Not surprisingly, as the tax for cigarettes has increased, cigarette sales dropped and the sales of undertaxed tobacco products went up.” TOBACCO CONTROL ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND TOBACCO TAX PARITY ACT -Dick Durbin (IL) Feb. 4, 2013

M

@Hamlet those are the Federal tax. Maryland state taxes would make that seem almost no taxes at all. Prior to 2007 we had a tax rate that was almost exactly what you have listed. In 2008 the tax doubled on cigarettes and 70% increase on small cigars and 15-30% more on smokeless. Premium cigars did not get touched. They used saving the kids from smoking to get it passed & it held true that there was I believe a 15% reduction in teen smoking. The state gained like 50 million in revenue from this. Since then there has been a unaltered stream of tobacco taxes… http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/nov/25/md-mulls-even-higher-tax-rates-on-cigarettes/?page=all This link is old because the taxes went through

B

I heard Md.was to raise to 95% on tobacco products;http://www.cspnet.com/news/tobacco/articles/state-cigarette-and-tobacco-tax-update

M

Maryland sucks when it come to taxes

M

For what it’s worth, there is an organization concerned with protecting cigar smokers rights. I’ll have to look it up, but it’s something like “Cigar Smokers of America”. Maybe someone here is familiar…

The Tobacco Tax Equity Act is proposed each session of Congress. So far it has always died in committee. Hopefully they will not mount a propaganda campaign to get it passed as they did with the Pact act. As long as its supporters have bigger fish to fry we will be safe, but some day they will put the dollars into building public support and will pass it.

V

I might be going to school in West Virginia where tobacco taxes are very low. My friend who already goes to school there buys cartons of cigs for 35 bucks I think. Either way i’m gonna be buying all my snuff from MrSnuff since they have the best selection. I don’t think any federal level crucifixion of tobacco is gonna happen for a while, the PACT act was recent enough to keep them calm.

M

Would it be too political to say: “Why don’t they just worry about more important things like meth labs, gang violence and human trafficking”? Because they want the money from taxes huh? Feel free to delete if too political…

B

Just another reason to buy in bulk NOW before the price goes coo-coo

O

Hahaha the bulk buying has begun for me thats for sure.Too hard to find locally, too easy for the government to decide to tax it to oblivion[like cigarettes] and also too easy for them to find a way to close the loophole that allows us to buy it outside the country.I have purchased over 1000 grams in the last 2 days and Im just getting started.
