"tobacco" in your native language

Since we have a multi-national group here at snuffhouse, i thought it might be fun to expand our vocabulary. Tobacco in english(US) is, well, tobacco. Snuff is snuff, or nasal snuff. How does one say it in your language?

just shortened to baccy in the north of england

In Afrikaans tobacco is called “tabak” but we usually shorten it to “twak”. Snuff is “snuif”.

In Bulgarian tobacco is “тютюн” (two-two-n). To pronounce this is as hard in Bulgarian as is in English  Snuff is “енфие” (enfie) which is a Turkish word, because the Turks introduced it here.

“Tabacco” in Italian; snuff is “Tabacco da fiuto” or “Tabacco da naso” (the latter is very very archaic, at least in Milan area).

In Dutch: tabak = tobacco; snuif = snuff, most of the time I expand it as snuiftabak = snuff tobacco as snuif here is readily connected with cocaine. Jaap Bes.

here I call cocaine asshole powder. Since from where I’am sitting that seems to be it’s primary function. Thanks for the heads up though seriously I could see myself in a tavern asking people if they know anywhere that sells snuif. Though that might make for some funny stories. In PA people call it sniffing snuff and sneezing powder.

In Poland tobacco is “tyton” or actually “tytoń” (last letter is a specifically polish letter, I don’t know if you can see it properly). Snuff is called “tabaka”.

What I have gathered in my notes over the last couple of years (none of these are my native language), other than the ones already mentioned: “Snuff” Hindi: Naswar other Indian: Tapkeer German: schnupf, schnupftabak Danish: snustobak Croatian: duhan, duhan za smrkanje Cherokee: tsolawanige Lakota: caliomna Tibeten: Natag Icelandic: neftóbak French: tabac à priser Irish: snaois, snaoisín Swedish: luktsnus Portuguese: rapé Scots Gaelic: snaoisean Socts English: sneeshin I thought I had a few others, I can’t seem to find them.

In PieterClaassen’s language snuff= VERY NICE
