I’m only two types deep in my snuffing career… but I already notice that which I love the most when it comes to snuff… is the tobacco flavor itself! So what brands are reccomended as far as tobacco flavor is concerned? You may list flavored brands where the tobacco is excellent within the flavor; but mainly I think what I’m asking for are good pure tobacco flavors.
Try some of the Viking range for starters like Viking Dark. Simple tobacco goodness.
The Viking range (Dark, Brown & Blonde) is a very good suggestion. As your experience is somewhat limited at the moment, I would also recommend trying an SP such as JH Wilson SP No 1 or Wilsons of Sharrow Best SP, as the hint of citrus just gives the tobacco flavour a little lift without detracting from it. To get the Viking in decent condition you need to be ordering 25g tins, but with the SP you should be able to get little 5g tins to try
There are three main “classes” of natural British snuffs: toasts, rappees, and plain SPs. Great toasts are WoS IHT #22, F&T HDT, etc. Samuel Gawith makes the best rappees, they are very coarse and moist and dark and smokey; Kendal Brown Original is canonical. Good plain SPs (no bergamot) are the SG Crest line. South African snuffs are natural and really freaking good. There’s Gekachelter Virginie from Germany, that’s a great one and great value and 5$ for 50g or something like that. Trying to think what else . . . American Scotches have to get a mention, as well as Indian Whites, which are all plain except for 6 Photo’s. There are some Brit snuffs that don’t really fit into one of those three categories like Viking Dark, too fine to be a rappee, too dark to be an SP, too moist to be a toast, but a superb snuff regardless. I’m with you the best scent for snuff is tobacco. There are a lot of plain snuffs out there. I think if I had to pick 5 for someone to try and give them a general overview they’d be F&T HDT SG Kendal Brown (VERY light bergamot scenting in this but nothing compared to most SPs) 41 Photo WE Taxi or Babaton Blue Viking Dark
Toque Quit
Agree on the Kendal Brown orig. Nice rich tobacco flavor with hints of citrus. Coarse, dark somewhat moist. Classic snuff. No. 22 is also pure tobacco but maybe not for the beginner. No flavors except the smoke from curing. Very fine and dry. Any of the Sir Walter Scott and Abraxas snuffs. Believe I will be trying the Samuel Gawith Black Rapee and London Brown. Also good to read reviews at MrSnuff, Snuff Reviews and Tony’s site. http://www.snuffreviews.com/ http://ermtony.pbworks.com/w/page/14871474/FrontPage
We do not sell it through our webshop, but on request we can provide snuff from pure Virginia Tobacco. Jaap Bes.
Buy some cotton boll and grind your own. This is some potent tobacco with an authentic taste.
I have to agree with @jpsavage - Abraxas and SWS snuffs do have superb tobacco bases. At the risk of heresy if you let those snuffs dry out a bit then you really do get the aroma of the underlying tobacco. That was something that I only discovered by accident - I would never, ever dry any of those snuffs out intentionally. I have only tried a couple of the De Kralingse snuffs but they also clearly use an excellent base tobacco.
My taste in snuffs is tobacco, with pretty much all the scented types I have to be mostly novelty and right mood to really enjoy. With that, the ones that satisfy me the most are… Viking Dark Bernard’s Virginie Toque Quit Dholakia Black
there are different types of tobacco - virginia, kentucky, buckley, latakia, mixed, so you can experience very different flavours. there is also matter of fermentation, which change the flavour. i recommend: JK Orange - wonderful virginia type with the most natural orange background. Paul Gotard Latakia - oriental, ‘smoky’ type Bernard Aecht Altbayerischer Schmalzler, Amostrinha, Offenbacher Cardinal WoS Irish Toast and Irish High Toast Sternecker Echt Fresko
Nice! I can already sense that I’ll be gravitating around this thread for my next purchases. Something about Viking Dark seems really appealing to me for my very next purchase though. The tin, the name (Norway represent!), the reviews and it seems to be the one mentioned the most times here. I have the impression that it could be a good staple snuff. No beating-around-the-bush about it, just straight up dark smack-in-your-face-'bacco. Sounds great. I’ve been snusing General for years, so I guess I really developed my taste for that honest dark tobacco flavor from that. Other than that I’ve been curious about High Dry Toast for a while now, it seems to be one of the most highly revered snuffs, but I’m not in a hurry for it. I love the Schmalzler angle at making snuff though, I love the tobacco in President… I love the menthol kick but when it finally fades and Im left with a lingering ooze of dark liquorish tobacco I’m in absolute heaven. It seams to be a Shmalzler thing, to keep the tobacco dark and heavy like that, from what I read and recognize. So all the German ones… and the Indian ones are definitely on my list as well… and even though I’ve been forewarned left and right, something tells me I gotta buy Lee Garretts american smoky scotch (but where?). Abraxas is also really catching my interest by its reviews. The Kendal’s are one of the few brands they actually sell in Oslo so I’ll definitely get around to that one day. And Snuffmiller, where do I go for that pure Virginia snuff you mentioned? That would be such a treat! But it will be Viking Dark first and foremost, then I’ll see how I go about sampling the others as time and money rolls by. Thank you all for great answers!
I’d have to say Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original, any Toque has a great underlying tobacco flavor so I’ve heard though I’ve only tried the Toque Apricot which is great, German Schmalzlers give a great tobacco flavor and of course American Scotches.
certainly you got some great advice. seems like it’s down to texture (grind) if you buy one of the browns and some viking dark and some quit–seems a logical start—but wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t end up a toast man
SG Black Rapee is pretty great. I also made snuff from some pure Latakia blending pipe tobacco, that had dried out, using one of the recipies on here, it was sublime. I highly recommend trying this at home.

@Mario84 General is a favourite of mine too. It’s flavoured and scented with bergamot, so any SP suggested would seem “familiar” to you. I can also attest that Viking Dark is a staple in my line up. 25g tin. It smells like a camp fire on a cold Nordic night. Makes me want to plunder something. Taxi Red has about the purest tobacco scent I’ve had but I’ve not had many of the others it also hits hard. In fact Taxi Red and Viking Dark helped me to quit snus…for now. They have enough nic to deliver to a snusser.

See, thats the thing also. In the long run I’d like to reduce the levels of nicotine my body needs, but at the same time enjoy what I’m giving it - through Snuff. My idea is to wait longer intervals of time between nicotine feeding than I usually do with snus (which I kept under my lip for hours anyway). Do you feel like you were able to reduce the level of nicotine your body demands by using snuff as a replacement for snus? How long does a 25g tin of Viking Dark last you? If anything causes a viking to plunder - it’s quitting snus! Haha!
@Mario84: You can contact me and we can discuss details. Jaap Bes.

@Mario84 - Yes snuff will reduce the nicotine demand in your body as it is a bit of a challenge to snuff at precise intervals. With snus, like you I would have a prilla in for maybe 9-10 hours per day with snuff in between. So switching over to snuff full time at first I was taking pinches fairly quick in succession but as time goes my body demanded less and now snuff is more of something I pinch when I am a little bored or need a little kick up. Snus was pretty easy to use a lot of because if a portion wore, out you take a new one, or if your prilla falls apart make a new one and in both cases I would use them for about 2-3 hours each…so there was a constant effect of some nicotine all the time. I understand the nicotine from snus fades after a while and by the 3rd hour it was proably not much at all, but the timing is different with snuff. a 25 g tin of Viking Dark will usually last me about a 4-6 weeksif it’s the only thing in my rotation. I usually take 2 large pinches per nostril about 4-5 X per day. I have just put in an order for Viking Peach which I am told is something like Viking Dark with Peach scent…so I am looking for something like that. I have only had Viking Dark from that snuff line, but I’m sure ALL of them are very good. Dark moist, and coarse to medium grind snuffs are my favourite. To me it’s like snus for the nose. Samuel Gawith does an excellent line of Dark moist coarse/medium snuffs which you may enjoy, considering you also enjoy the schmalzlers. 25 g tin though, the tap boxes do not travel well at all.
Excellent! Sounds great! With a tin of Viking Brown (they didnt have Dark at MrSnuff just now) on the way in the mail as of today, the future is looking very optimistic! Hehe! I can’t wait, and a review will surely be written!
