Toasts and the rather smokey aroma thereafter

I come to you all, hat in hand and admittedly the epitome of a snuff noob if there ever was one to share my small story and ask for your general input. You see, I recently took a trip to Switzerland to, as my elder relatives put it “SEEK OUT MY ROOTS” in the old country, visiting Germany and the town my grandfather grew up in. Long story short I received a table-top snuff tin with a pewter effigy of General Henri Guisan, the last serving war-time general of Switzerland. I purchased some snuffs before heading back to the states including a small tin of Singleton’s and some “Glaser pinch” as we would call it. I have since made and received an order from Mr. Snuff and have been delighted with Toque’s Lime toast’s fruity beginning transitioning to a very pleasant smokey, campfire aroma. I also enjoy Wilson’s Irish High Toast no. 22 but find it to be more of a musky, buttery aroma, not nearly as strong. I find myself having to take several pinches to be content with it. So I ask, what other toasts should I include in my order? I think Wilson’s or Toque’s Toast and Marmalade will most certainly be included but I would like a regular toast with the smoke that the lime toast delivers. Thanks again for the input!

The all toast bundle also Toque almond toast. If you like burnt toast -fubar toasted https://mistersnuff.com/catalog/toast-bundle-p-1189.html

Almond eh? That is very intriguing. I think ill also try some Toque Absinthe and am debating on dabbling in scotches, I’ve heard they can be rather rough. The Navy sweet or Peach look and sound appealing but only come in 30g tins and Im not sure I want that much of a snuff that I have never tried before.

@SpaceHamster Have some glass jars to transfer the open tins into. If you don’t like a snuff right off come back to it later.

If you like the smoky finish of Lime Toast, try Toque Natural Toast. I believe it is the base for the lime toast and a nice smokiness to it.

@basement_shaman Ah that is also a good idea. Can you recommend any other must have snuffs so I can get a broader taste of what is out there? I realize that is a difficult question. I already have some gawith apricot and Dholakia swiss chocolate as well as Toque blueberry menthol and WoS raspberry @crullers That’s good to know, thank you.

De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860 very camp fire smokey, For a beginner Samuel Gawith Black Coffee{My favorite} and most of the SG line.Schmaltzlers are heavy and loaded with moisture and sweetness, very beginner friendly. Indian snuffs are exotic,Explore when ready

Navy Sweet is really quite sweet. The toast of all toats, for me, is Fribourg and Treyer High Dry Toast. Toque Natural Toast is not half bad either. When I started with toasts I had good luck with Tranter Irish Toast Light–it’s not available any longer, but someone might know its WoS equivalent.

Too sweet? I havnt tried regular navy so I wouldnt know what change “sweetness” would bring to it. Would you recommend regular navy first? I’m trying to decide what american scotch to start with.

I know, it’s not a toast at all, but when talking about a smokey effect I love SG Wild Duck and would also recommend Paul Gottard Latakia…Enjoy! fRANKLY WE ARE ALL NEWBIES…So much more to learn/try/share/experience!!!

I have not heard anything good about navy snuff. But I have not tried it. Honest scotch has great BBQ notes. And sweet scotches some are sweeter than others,

I like Navy Plain. It’s rather light and probably a good scotch for a beginner. Try more than one. You’re bound to find one you like.

@SpaceHamster, that certainly is a roundabout way to discover snuff, but sounds really fun all the same, andyou should take no shame in it. Most of the Americans on this board found snuff through various other (more mundane) domestic means. Anyway I think its great that you want to explore and try new snuffs and snuff styles. As far as Toasts go, the Wilsons one you have is the standard, scented ones are the exception (being much newer) and I find it prettty smokey probably a bit more than Toque. By all means try the Toast & Marmalade. If you liked Lime Toast, its the same except its orange, not lime. Also try Bourbon or Whiskey & Honey from Toque, both very popular. All Touque toasts share the same base, so the smokiness should really be the same in all of them. Don’t forget Lemon Toast from Wilsons, which not as in your face toastiness as the others has a really nice flavor and effect. The Wilsons #22 is pretty smokey-- less buttery, so I;m not sure what to recommend For a plain toast. The SG ones are MORE buttery and the F&T one more… “complicated” and sweeter. Gawith Hoggarth’s is probably a bit smokier than the others, but more of an acrid flavor than butter. As far as Scotches go, Navy plain is ok, I’m not fond of Navy Sweet or sweet scotches in general. I find most of them overpoweringly sweet. Starr is the best beginner scotch followed then by Railroad Mills and Navy. However none of these are particularly smokey. For that, try Square, Rooster, Bruton, Standard, and W.E. Garrett. Be warned Bruton is very harsh and not for the novice nose (or even some veterens). I think you’ll enjoy the exploration!

My knowledge of scotches is limited, although I did find Navy more palatable than others. I’ve only tried the sweet, and it seemed to me it would be nicer without the sweetness which seemed odd in the nose. Of those I’ve tried I found Superior easiest to take. Worst by a mile was Rooster, which I found harsher even than Bruton.

Navy Sweet is a very good mixer. Some snuffs are useful as a kind of snuff ‘seasoning’, meaning they might not be so great on their own but in small amounts can really add something to another snuff. I use Royal George like this as well; RG is too perfumed straight up, for my taste, but a small amount added to an SP or a plain toast is delicious. I’m using N. Sweet at the moment with some Quit and it smoothes out the Quit, which has excellent nicotine content but is not too flavourful and tones down the Sweet. The old ‘sum of the parts is greater than the whole’ type effect.

Vary interesting. I am gonna try this right now.

Although the Navy was definitely improved I think I put too much in, as it dominated the mix, so I added some Gawith H SP which rounded things off nicely. Now it’s a pretty decent blend. Thanks!
