to tom502: Here's your proof! US Snuff used Nasally

Look at Lorillard Snuff Paper c.1890tom we know we’ve finally comverted you, but this caught my eye and I thought you’d like to see it. The picture is from 1888 and shows a couple taking an American snuff nasaly. The gentleman is holding a nice open snuffbox and a pinch of snuff in the other hand. The lady is taking what looks to be an uncomfortable pinch to her nose. So I guess nasal use hadn’t died out by the late 1880s and was still advertised as such (on this point I was wrong- I underestimated) What’s wrong with the picture? There are no Exposositions in Atlanta in any recent years awarding gold medals to snuffs! I’m not bidding on it, so anyone who wants it go for it. Though I’d love to have it!

GREAT LINK, XANDER!

Wow - great find, Xander!

I’ll have to look at it later, as I’m at work, and that site is blocked. But yeah, I admitted early snuff was created and used nasally in the US. My point was it “evolved” into oral usage, and I think the companies catered to this usage with it’s sweets and flavors. But as one who just recently snuffed some of the Euro toasts, it is still not “the same” as, let’s say, Bruton. But sure, I am in agreement early dry snuff was used nasally. I don’t think I ever said it wasn’t. I am, or was, making the point that, I think if one could track the cans bought these days, they’d be mainly bought for oral use. It would be interesting to really know, maybe more people nasally snuff them then we would think. I still don’t think they rightly compare to the imports I have had with quality grind and flavor essence. Thanks for the link and thinking about me.

I know you did tom, but you also mentioned the only paraphenalia you could find is oral use. I was actually suprised at to find this because I thought oral had almost completely supplanted nasal by the 1880s.

Yes, that is a find, to see it used advertised nasally at such a later date. Tobacco product history is very interesting. My wondering is, did the American Indians use it nasally?

yeah, they did

Interesting.

Man I almost bought that same sign/advertisement poster last year on ebay but the one I was looking at wasn’t in a frame and had a little tear on the corner & was a lot more faded. They were asking $35.

So its a good deal at the opening bid? I’m still not going for it, so bid without fear of competition.

It’s neat, but I’d rather blow $75 on more snuff.

I agree with you there stokes, $75 will buy a lot of snuff. Although the poster is neat.

Interesting pictures of Helme’s snuff artifacts. Note the ‘sewing needle kit’ wording, below the RR Mills and Honey Bee container pictures . Nothing stated about nasal use, only oral-related attributes. Same for the snuff card of the kids a few pic’s below that. http://jamesburg.net/jha/savehistory/helmettasecureditems.html

Yeah, I’ve looked at this page before. Its some cool stuff. I love that picture of the kids. There’s a site somewhere with a bunch of French postcards that show kids taking snuff. I wonder what was in the heads of people to advertise that way. Nowadays, Helme (Swisher) just lets these brands slide. No advertising at all it seems. Although they do have a bigger line of products and at least pay some attention to them unlike the other US companies.

…hook 'em while they’re young ?

Here’s another piece of evidence. Look at the words that are circled, mostly the second.Maccoboy

I don’t doubt it. That site is blocked though, as I am at work. But I do think the sweet varieties were later made to appeal to oral users. Could be wrong though.

@ cstokes4: I’m not sure that’s evidence. Scented means it “smells like” or flavored. Still, of all the American snuffs, Maccoboy is one I cannot imagine having in the mouth. I did a snoot of Maccoboy this morning, I love it. I thought to myself how it was closest in moisture and grind texture to the true oral snuffs, but it was the least appealing of the nasal snuffs to use orally. Anyway, you look at it, its in its own category. It even breaks with the pack and has its own bottle, not a can. Has anyone tried Maccoboy orally?

I am not shamed in the least to admit to trying snuff in the lower lip! My favorite to do that with is NOT maccaboy its just ehh, love it in the nose loathe in the mouth. Honeybee in all its sweet glory is my guilty pleasure of candy snuff goodness in the lip.
