So I know many of you have noticed that aluminum tins like those for Fribourg &Treyer tend to corode over time. I was wondering if you lined the tin with a plastic bag and then put the snuff back in would that help? Or Would it mess up the snuff?
I’ve never had a F&T tin corrode. Only WoS tins.
Know what you mean. Had a F@T princess corrode, but thats because I half emptied it and then forgot about it for a couple of months. Doesnt hang around that long normally. A plastic bag should be ok because some suppliers sell snuff in bags. NTSU and TAXI plastic containers are excellent for storing snuff, but at the risk of stating the obvious, make sure you wash and dry them thoroughly.
I’ve never had an F&T tin corrode either and I’m still using some that are several years old. London Jack - did you leave the lid slightly loose or something ?
@BradMajors. Not that I noticed but it only ever happened with princes. Maybe as its rather moist ( I gather its cured in brine),there was a slight reaction between the salt and aluminium. Never happaned with any other F&T.
Same goes with me. My tin of F&T Princes started to corrode right near the top. My other semi moist ones like Bordeaux or Princes Special are still fine.
yeah princes kills tins not sure it’s moisture might be the brine or something else in it. Also if you let that one dry out you get strange iradscent (creative spelling perchance?) crystals.
Crikey!!!11111 I just noticed my Princes tin has some corrosion at the top! My heart is now broken.
Well blimey. Good job I don’t like F&T Princes much !
I have some mid 70’s F&T tins and they are perfect.
after reading this thread I have relocated my F&T Princes to an empty Taxi tin. I’m not waiting for it to corrode its tin.
@ bish777 I’m surprised that they are fine because I recently acquired a 1970’s tin of Morlaix and the whole inside of the tin was covered in a white oxidation. I ended up throwing the snuff away and just keeping the tin and old F&T paper box that it came it. Cool items but still the fact that aluminum oxidizes; for all us collectors or un-intentional collectors of many snuffs, I would say either package your F&T, and Wilsons snuffs in plastic zip-lock baggies and then place them inside the tins or totally relocate them because over time the uber-moist snuffs really f*#$@ up inside these tins. I’m out of town right now visiting the folks for fathers day but as soon as I get home I’m going to try and save me Princes, Morocco, Princes Special ect…
I would think it would dry out in a Taxi tub. They are not nearly as airtight as an F&T tube. I have not had this issue, and the reason I think is becuase everytime I open it, I clean the lid, the gasket and threads very thouroughly to ensure a clean seal. I also close them pretty tight, but being sure not to bend or damage the threads. Without air, even a corrosive substance cannot oxidize. Just a theory, not a gaurantee.
